There was an older cashier at a store that had a paper towel taped to her face and was using surface cleaner. I asked her and she said she has asthma and MS that she has to work because she is raising her grandchildren. I cried. I’ve been sewing triple layer cotton masks for veterans, nursing home, family, my spouse, my son who’s a law enforcement etc. I took my mask off and dropped it into a bag and then took my spray hand sanitizer and gave that to her too. I to,d her to wash the mask before she puts it on and to wash it every evening. She cried. If you can help someone then please please do it!

Hey, we as healthcare professionals should NOT be out shopping in our scrubs. It’s irresponsible at a time such as this. A . You should not go in dirty scrubs B. No one knows if you’re pre work or post work, and are scared.
I had to shop after work this morning, I changed clothes and cleaned up before I left work, and then shopped.

I’ve been sick for a week and got better, my daughter got sick and then got better, and now my husband is sick and is on the mend...not once did we even think to get tested....why? Because what would that do? Absolutely nothing...we got better by keeping ourselves isolated in our room. FYI...I’m a nurse and I don’t panic by nature.

    • @stephro74
      @stephro74 4 года назад +4

Perhaps a reason to get tested is that you'll be in the count for cases recovered and help bring the "death rate" down. The lower that number, the less people continue to panic.

SINOI HALL I’m in Seattle and had it early on. We all stayed home and no tests because we are FINE. Stats coming out of Italy are not backing what the media is saying. I haven’t a doubt there is an issue for the elderly but I think this is EVERYWHERE and the death toll is very small in comparison to real infection.

Chris Manzi Wouldn’t Matter either way because the common treatment is the same as the flu. Rest, hydration, and expectorant cough syrup to lighten the phlegm so a person can cough it up. When it get serious and a person can’t breath, then I’d say go to the hospital.

ZDOGGMD, I don't know if you have said anything about the equally frontline Healthcare workers that handle housekeeping and sanitation for the hospitals. But ours are being mistreated. I am a nurse. My job depends on sanitary conditions. WHY ARE NURSES and others treating Housekeeping staff like ASSHOLES, JERKS, DICKS, whatever expletive you like? No professional medical person should be hateful arrogant jerks to your EXTREMELY IMPORTANT VIPS...those are the housekeeping staff.

I haven't watched news for years. Recently, I have observed how much the mainstream media (outlets geared for Democrat(Liberal) and Republican(Conservative)) don't report truth they just talk and incite hysteria and fear. I have watched people like ZDoggMD who are able to just sit there and talk ..give the truth without someone cutting them off with "so, what you're saying is.." and then says nothing like the person did say, but it's what the viewer remembers hearing.

I would like to share that where I’m at (San Bernardino/Riverside/LA areas): I’m seeing so much patience at the store as people wait in mini lines for water and tp, I’m seeing compassion and helpful neighbors as we knock on doors and ask one another what we need as far as food and supplies go, I’m seeing our church create a delivery system for elderly members’ medications as well as groceries and supplies, and I’m grateful.
I’m grateful to see our elderly neighbors being taken care of and having the opportunity to serve them. I’m grateful for channels like this one sharing information and understandable content that’s not fear inducing and panic producing. Thank you, Dr. Z!

As a dietitian in a hospital we are doing our part by staying out of any patient rooms that require any PPE AT ALL. Some of my coworkers feel that this makes us look non-essential but in my eyes it is the least we could do to not waste PPE and support our front line. Some of our pts have waited 5+days for test results to come back.

I’m very concerned because I’m not only an RN at a hospital but also 32 weeks pregnant. It’s frightening looking at this situation from a healthcare workers perspective, but also someone who is high risk. They cancelled my prenatal classes and had a telemedicine appointment to limit exposure in the medical system. But can’t really practice “social distancing” providing patient care.

I have seen a lot of posts in sewing groups that are passing patterns around for N95-style and surgical style masks. They can be washed, and at least can be used for patients so HCW can use the legit stuff. Best part is we don’t have to worry about a shortage of fabric, because sewers are hoarders.

Most homeless in America have serious underlying issues which make it very difficult to get them off the streets. Trust me, I've helped some find jobs with full benefits, only to have them quit within two weeks and go right back to the streets. Those who are really just down on their luck in the U.S. in our modern era are usually a minority of the homeless. I do feel bad for a number of them, but it's very difficult to address some of the substance abuse and psychological issues behind much of America's homelessness.

  • @Tousicle

When you don't fear death, physical or ego, none of this is stressful, stress is a blocker of the body, of performance, of the mind; it does nothing but make other people stress and bogged down. There's no use for it. Hear this information, take it practically, but don't let it turn you to your fear because that'll turn to anger. Let love be your filter on life. Experience this because this is what life is for and practice gratitude. The best we can do is be our true selves, as he's saying; we're all connected. I hope everyone is doing their part; I know I am, and I am sincerely thankful for all this info ZDoggMD. Thank you for your service!

I am a nurse who has issues with anxiety and I am glad to hear you touch on the psychological aspect of this. I am terrified and this has exacerbated my anxiety more than I ever knew possible. I am not coping well. I just cant wait for this to be over and hope I don't have a breakdown in the meantime. In the beginning I was having rational thought and remaining calm. This is not the case anymore. It has shown me how fragile and delicate our way of life is and how quickly it can be taken away from everyone..and I mean EVERYONE! And this, I think, is what has me shaken to my core. I have been living in a safe little bubble and never imagined life as we know it could ever change to such monumental degree. I do not feel safe anymore and I'm not sure if I ever will again.

Being grateful for and preparing to live without first-world luxuries (foreign travel and extended camping help with this). Long term anxiety disorder here. This pandemic has ramped it up so hard 🤦🏻‍♀️ the overthinking, catastrophising, hyper awareness of every little thing your body does (is this a symptom? Is this IT?), how the anxiety manages to encompass everything and everyone bc you are most definitely not in control and can’t ‘fix’ the situation. The need to know All The Information vs the need for a mind-wipe for some brief peace.

I am a hospital physician in Rochester NY. I developed mild symptoms on March 19 and was denied testing for 24 hours and then finally the doctor in the testing tent in our drivethrough facility (in a parking lot on hospital grounds) said, "she needs testing!" and I got one yesterday afternoon. At least a 5 day turnaround. In a way I am hoping I am positive because then I will be way less afraid to go to work when I am cleared. We have a 2, now 1 day supply of N95 masks and what we are now trying to do is have masks sewn from tight wave material to COVER the N95 masks so they can be reused. I am buying into this because we have no other choice. Its 2020 and we are using 100 year old technologies to protect ourselves.

Quite frankly, if more people were just smart enough to stop congregating in massive groups for a couple weeks, then maybe we'd have a much better grasp of all this. The CFR seems to be steadily falling in the U.S. at the moment, unlike Italy's, and if it stays that way then maybe we really can get back to more normalcy in relatively short order. More people just need to stop acting so dumb at either extreme end of the spectrum, otherwise this will simply drag out longer than absolutely necessary.

Many of us, still working or retired, like me, SHOULD have been listened to. We should have used empty hotels to house medical staff & divert non infectious patients. I've been holding my gallon of gas to burn this system down for decades.
As a student nurse in Evanston, Illinois, I watched the Searle healthcare company donate HUGE sums for our new patient towers. The rooms were large, the window treatments lovely. Sadly, an architectural screw up made the WHOLE building 1/2 floor off! Needed a connecting elevator, slowing transport & costing extra sums. There was also NO dirty utility rooms so nurses had to carry bedpans down the "lovely" hallways.
Glad you discussed advanced medical directives, I have previous chest trauma & make sure my family knows my wishes.
Using this time with my teenage grandson at home to teach him anatomy & physiology. EVERYONE needs an "owners manual". You'll be a better informed healthcare consumer!

Zdogg, I have thought about it long and hard and come to the same conclusion you have regarding how we can handle this moving forward after a lockdown. I think a hard lockdown gives us an opportunity to reset, as we ramp up production of PPE, ventilators, and whatever the best apparent treatments are. Then as you stated, we slowly come off the breaks while having huge testing and social isolation for the most vulnerable. I think it is a reasonable plan that could work. Also, if we can get to the point where there is enough PPE, everyone wears at least a surgical mask, if not a vented N95 (or better) and gloves every day in public... Like in South Korea.

I’m glad they have them. The rest of us workers from CNA’s to ICU RN’s are not being provided this protection. The physicians have them. I was told by a supervisor we don’t need them. So what do we do? I am above the age of 50. My health care surrogate has been instructed I will be a DNR/DNI. The future looks pretty bleak from where I stand. While ignoring the administrators and "experts" who failed to properly prepare for this? Years ago papers were published about respirator options during pandemics, and how reusable options should be considered precisely due to what we see occuring now. Nevertheless, these options were never seriously explored.
ETA: Elon Musk and Tesla included some amazing reusable PAPRs in their medical shipments so far, which could prove to be a future game-changer in terms of recognizing which equipment works best for these scenarios. Maybe in the future more hospitals will find it cost-effective to spend some money in maintaining lockers with this gear as opposed to simply relying upon disposable supplies for serious outbreaks.

A couple of visitors actually spit at my coworkers in anger. Thank goodness security responded quickly. One visitor called the police, can't figure out why. Some of the general public are way beyond noncompliance they are already combative. If it comes to being on a ventilator for a long period of time, and if ventilators and ICU beds are in such short supply, who makes the call to remove someone from a ventilator so it can be used for someone else? Seems like there would be a limit for the length of time someone can stay on them. It just seems odd that you'd have a authorized document stating who makes decisions if you're maybe not even be allowed to stay on the ventilator for a long time.

I have heard from an official at Johns Hopkins University that he estimates that ther are between 100,000-500,000 people in the US who have Covid-19, but many are asymptomatic, have very mild symptoms. I also read that there are 25-50X as many as the number being reported, so this would appear to show that the virus is not as bad as the hype. I believe in community immunity or herd immunity. Most people are pretty informed on their state of health and know intuitively if they will be able to get the virus and go through it, and the more who go through it sheltering in place without going to a hospital the better.
