My aunt dipped the bottoms half of clear glass candle vases from the dollar store. Grouped together they were just beautiful! The candle light flickering through the salt was magical. Looked like ice!
Just a tip for you put some mod podge in a small cup or bowl then pour in some Epsom salt stir it up the put some color in it ( cake coloring or water paint) then cover the bulb with the mixture then add some uncolored Epsom salt and let dry. It's beautiful.
what about spraying the FINISHED product w/clear spray varnish to protect the coloring AND help keep from the salt from bumping off? Thanks for the GREAT starting idea Amy! NEVER have nor prob would have thought of using Epsom salts!
If u weren't going for a see thru glass looking bulb, I have another option. Pour white acrylic paint, or whatever color u want, inside the bulb. Swirl it around until its coated, drain off excess n dry. That way, ur bulb won't b clear, but will look more like snow. A wooden dowel stuck in floral foam makes a good drying stand. Just an idea
Love this idea....hear me out...use old ornaments that are fading or colored ornaments that you do not care for and use this technique...or add dye to the epsom salt...hugs and happy creating🎉🎉🎉
I just tried this last night but I did it on the inside of a Dollar Tree small fishbowl, I had a problem with the Epsom salt falling off in clumps I had to start over 2 times I watched so many tutorials on it and it seemed like it was going to be so easy but it wasn’t I finally used regular table salt and glitter mixed in and that turned out pretty good I also learned That spraying hairspray after it dries sets it pretty good! I felt like I had salt and glue from my head to my toes! Live and learn! And thank you so much for not being afraid of not looking perfect, makes me feel brave enough to try and try again! Love love love you!
The technique you present here is so much easier and less time-consuming than the one shown on another video I recently watched. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this method with us!
Live your video. Thanks. I had to share my love of freezer paper. I use it for everything but freezing - paint templates, just tried a folded Texas star with it to get size before using my one large board, and always underneath my crafts. Recently my grown daughters came over to make home made cheese-spinach-basil ravioli with me. I covered a large portion of my bar and countertops with it using clear moving tape. Then I could see any filling that escaped etc. my counters are earth toned granite and I also didn’t want to have to clean flour + water = glue off of them later. Lol. When my 29 year old was 3, I fed the freezer paper over the top of our rectangle coffee table (short side to short side) and she colored, painted, we used stamps, etc all on the paper side, and I was moving it off the table as we went so we had 20+ feet of this ‘art’. Then I used that to wrap our presents that Christmas. The plastic backing makes it perfect for paintings.
A word of warning!!! I used this method to cover a mason jar and when it dried I decorated it and place it on my window ledge, above my radiator, the salt actually melted from the heat of the radiator and went quite flat and turned white. So just a word of warning, that heat actually melts the salts. Great tutorial, thank you. Jane
@@rosettamccoy6123 Rosetta Mccoy perhaps try one with larger crystals? Many stores sell their own store brands. Also, use a few LIGHT layers of the sealer instead of one heavy one. I found that drying them in a 100 degree oven for a few minutes helped to bring back some of the "melted" ones.
HappyBirds Glitter Nest here on RUclips uses Triple Thick Glass Glaze instead of modgepodge. Thicker material to hold the glitter-type materials. Will give you a thicker coverage with the epsom salts. Check out her Layered Snowflake tutorial. Creative Blessings!
thank you for the tip, I just made her glitter tags, using the thick glue and wanting more projects to use it up, now I'm getting ready to make some glass snowmen using Epson salt.
I appreciate you doing this video. Whether you've done this before or not. I think you're quite the clever lady and could see myself enjoying doing crafts with you. Hi Sandra just sat in the Sun and watched your grand opening video made just for us. It felt like I was there for a moment you did a great job filming. Love listening to your stories and I know you're busy right now getting ready for your big Grand evening can't wait to hear how it went but please please get some good rest. So sorry about your dog I know they are one of the family members.
I go to a crafters club once a month and for our December meeting we're to bring a hand made ornament - this is a perfect idea - so glad I stumbled upon your channel (I subscribed too)
Hi Amy. I made one of these after watching watching your wonderful video. Can't believe it's already been a year. I put hair spray all over mine and they have lasted. :) Also, you can use shellac in a spray as well and it will hold for quite awhile. :) God bless you and hope you are doing well. :)
Home and family's show how to make salt dough on one of their shows. They use plain table salt and the crafter Marie said that it last for years if you dry the item you made. Also she said use a clear coat plain spray paint to make the item last even longer.
the best way to color Epsom salts is to put an amount in a zip lock bag, us Wilton paste food color you can make it as light or dark as you like.. a little goes a long way. use a tooth pick to dip in to the color and place it on a small portion of the salts, close the bag and work it into the salts until you get the color you desire. Use a new tooth pick each dip into the color or have separate colors for crafts and cooking
Just a note I’ve gotten my bulbs from Wal Mart in a large box of 10-12 I think I haven’t bought any in a long time but they didn’t cost much at all. I suggest you check there or a similar store as the craft stores cost more. But beautiful ornaments.
Thin mogpog down with water and put in a spray bottle. Once the epsom salts is dry lightly spray with the mixture. 2 or 3 coats drying in between coats will seal it.
I never thought to use epsom salt but great idea...it really does look like ice. I bet if you coat the inside with a color, maybe typical holiday colors like red, green, blue, the color would reflect through the salt. Another idea is once it's dry, coat the outside lightly with more mod podge to seal it so that you can handle it wiout creating bare spots. Merry Christmas!
Could you pour the alcohol inside the ornament and drain out, allow to dry, and then pour in the Mod Podge and swirl to complete coat inside, drain excess off and afterwards pour in the Epsom salt and shake until covered. You could then "seal" off the top of opening with plastic before placing the metal hanging hander cap. This would allow ornament to be cleaned as needed, kept ry and away from moisture. IT would also be safer from little hands being exposed to the Epson salt.
I do glitter inside. Just roll some mop and glow around to coat then roll around the glitter. Put open end down in a Dixie cup overnight. Ribbon then done.
Loved this video, am going to give it a try. Even if it does eventually go powdery, just means I can do something different without buying another ball. (lol) You are a lovely person with a great sense of humor, I subscribed and looking forward to more crafting adventures with you.
Spray acrylic paint (safe version) perhaps on the outside as more glue will just take off or melt the salts while brushing? These would be very messy to pack away I would try to do an acrylic washable surface. Very thin powder glitter is very cheap. Cool idea for fun play for kids although I think there would be a problem if they eat bath salts?I dont know im a negative nelly
Thanks for the ideas! I finally purchased those plastic ornament storage boxes a few years ago, and I tend to like sparkle.. so I started putting a little tissue paper around the ornaments more likely to "shed." I did ornaments with floor wax and glitter INSIDE the ornaments with my grandchildren. Since they didn't "shed," I"m happy to report my daughters still speak to me. :-)
DIY ModPodge....2 parts PVC (white or school) glue 1 part water. Works with clear school glue but its easier to make certain every place that you want covered is covered. 💜
Omg I just realized this when I got my beautiful crystallized ornaments out again this year and now they’re dried out and crusty 🙈🤣 wish someone would have mentioned this in all the Rodin salt tutorials
Very nice, and so easy! I was thinking, maybe put some epsom salts in a bowl, and roll the ornament in the bowl after you put on the coat of mod podge. You could have different bowls for the various colors. As for craft papers, I also go to my local B.J.'s Wholesale Club and get their 2 pack of baking parchment. I do a lot with polymer clay, and baking parchment can be heated/go in the oven. It's also great when using anything that irons on, and can wreck your iron, and ironing board cover.
Yesterday I shattered an ornament by hitting it with the handle of my big shot. In general I'm dangerous with fragile stuff... This is a great idea for the rest of you. Hahaha
Great idea, I have used the DOLLAR TREE lavender bath salts on a glass bottle DYI and gave it a MOD PODGE coating on top of the bath salts. It turned out quite well.
Beautiful! Is it possible for us to use shatterproof ornaments instead? Thank you for sharing this! Have a wonderful, safe and blessed week! Peace & Blessings!
I put essential oils in my salts... I also color it, and some times add fine glitter. BTW; White glue works very well. I just did 48 snowmen with little sock hats- stryfoam balls with white glue and glittered salts., for a Christmas craft fair, they are adorable.

Hi Just a tip when using white glue just make sure you pick up the one that says white glue not school glue the school glue does sticks but it is mostly for school use because it does wash out...the other doesn't wash out...it should say on the bottle that its washable..just a tip
If you are using food colouring for your Christmas Balls, you could always put the glue on the inside and then shake the green epsoms salt into the ball and roll it around until everything is coated.
Before you seal it which is really needed to keep salt on ornament, sprinkle or roll in your choice of glitter. You can color also by spraying, rolling or painting in paint.
These are So Beautiful!! I think a deeper colored fancy wider ribbon would look Great Too. If you use the food coloring you could try to seal it with clear krylon spray. It might work to stop it from bleeding. It might also work to keep the salt from falling off too. Ive used it to seal paintings.

Frances Walker also all depends where u are from. I grew up with my parents saying “warsh” instead of wash. Even my speak n spell said warsh! Never could u understand y I missed that spelling word, till I got older. Now, my kids have fun correcting their nana and papa. 😉😂
@@PR-pe9oc🙆♀️ OMG, Penny! You're actually one of the only other people I've heard about saying 'Warsh', besides my mom! And she passed about 19 yrs ago....
I don't feel quite so alone anymore, Thank you!!!
This is soooo PRETTY!!! I love Christmas!!!
To color the epsom salt put about half a pint in a jar with a couple drops food color. Shake until colored.
Wish we could see what it looks like with the food coloring
Thanks! I'm going to use this for my tree branch centerpieces. This is way better than glitter!
Great job! That looks simple enough that maybe even I could do it... :)
The food colouring prob will come off if it gets wet BUT the Epson salts will also dissolve
You think this will work with the clear plastic ornaments?
I guess to colour the epsom salts you could glue it on plain then when the glue has set you could dab a coloured felt pen on to it . It would take time but the result might be fab

I love this idea and have all the materials including the bulbs...I'd like to know what to do about the salt becoming powdery.
I'm planning to redo the project this weekend, sealing it and then purposefully drying it out to see how the salts hold up.
You can try glitter sugar also.
Coat the ornament with Mod Podge, then dip it into a bowl of Epsom Salt because it dries quickly.
It always melts when I use it how do I keep it from melting
What do my modge podge epsom salt diy have water on bottom after drying? 3:46
I would have spraye with some kind of varnish to glue the salt even more to the baubels.
epoxy glue works well for many projects and has a strong hold for jewelry projects also.
Just found this video. Gorgeous ornament, & the idea of coloring the salts is just amazing!! I’m wondering if you can color the salt with acrylic paint, let it dry (paint would be permanent) & then apply it to the ornament. I will be trying this today!!
Isn't mod podge just white glue? Love the idea looks gorgeous. I know it's late but still decorating so love the snow look. I'm making plastic soda bottle icicles cause I've got this spiral staircase, so I want to hang icicles, snowflakes, mirrors, pieces of old cd discs (that shiny beautiful) all hung by kite string. Want to put up fairy lights that r 10 x 10 warm white with 8 diff setting n bought with survey money (proud of that). A hanging winner wonderland, so Epsom salt as snow is genius, I've got it here n on SSI income, so try to b frugal n crafty. Appriciate the help girl.
Merry Christmas to u n ur family. God bless XoJaynaoX
my tip, I spray Aqua Net hair spray on glittered & salt projects to sent and it will not fall off or stick to you hands
You can get wax paper at Dollar Tree. I use parchment paper for crafting and I get it there... :)
Such a gorgeous DIY Amy💖 thank you so much for sharing😉👌 xoxoNadia💋
I am just wondering if you put the glue/modpodge inside of the ornament and then pour in the epsom salt? That way you wouldn't have to worry about it being knocked off? I'm not sure if that would work but after i saw the end of this video i started thinking about this!! Either way Amy it was a great craft!!
ps can it be sprayed with a clear spray to seal it.
Would it be helpful to spray modpodge after you apply the salt
Yes it Will protect the salt from falling and it Will make it shiner
