    Why does it require supports? Doesn't the powder support??

    • @velo3d
      @velo3d Год назад +6

      Good question! You're right. The bed of powder does support the part. The supports actually act as anchors that keep the corners of the part from lifting above the bed of powder.

    • @julhcoh
      @julhcoh Год назад +13

      When you're printing in a plastic powderbed (known as SLS or Selective Laser Sintering), yes, everything is self supported.
      This process is L-PBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion), and especially with our Sapphire XC firing 8x 1kW lasers, you're putting so much energy into the powder that parts actually warp up out of the powderbed. So supports in this process serve two purposes: they evacuate heat from the part into the baseplate, and prevent the stress in the part from curling it up like a potato chip.
      Velo3D's process allows us to use WAY LESS supports than are required for most L-PBF printers on the market. This allows us to make parts others can't, and makes it easier+cheaper for us to remove supports and get finished parts out the door.
