    I just got done taking a DB administration class. Microsoft SQL Server 2014 and Oracle 12c. Very tough class. Especially when we got to Oracle. I got a C. Logical structure isn't exactly common sense. Combine that with different SQL syntax's and your mind can get warped pretty quickly. Especially under time constraints. The manuals for the class were over 2000 pages long and they didn't even scratch the surface. All too often I had to look for online documentation. The SQL landscape is absolutely huge. Better know the command line reasonably well.

    just learn to code. There are so many different directions you can go in when you learn to code. Whether you go into sql dev, software dev, data science( R, Python or SAS), scriping( powershell, linux terminal), MDX/DAX etc.... and many more. You'll find a very nice career no matter what direction you go

    Great video. I'm trying for a career change and may have the chance to get into a (junior) database developer role at my current workplace with zero knowledge. Always hard to decide what is best for myself since I don't know what I'm necessarily getting myself into, but great to know being flexible and technologies do not matter so much. Already taught myself Python fundamentals so I think I'm headed in the right direction!

    I am currently enrolled in a state-sponsored IT training program and studying towards certification in database development. At first, I was disappointed because I wanted to learn front-end. My instructor told me database is one of the best ways to "get your foot in the door". So, it's nice to hear from you that several years on, one can fairly easily switch to other roles and more easily learn other coding languages. I'm become a nerd for DB, though, so who knows. I check local job boards to keep up with all what skills I should have to qualify once I graduate. What's funny is that on LinkedIn, software development jobs have dozens of applicants, but database developer jobs in my area barely crack 15 applicants.

    Hi Stefan, great video!
    I currently work in a "data analyst" role, where I mostly do SQL coding and data visualization/reporting. I want to become a database developer. What skills/languages would you recommend learning? I'm starting to do some ETL/warehousing now, and I'm not sure if data engineers/achitects or DBAs need to know any scripting language. I played around with basics in Python when I was taking data science classes in college as well, so I'm very open to learning it. So to summarize, my question is, with intermediate SQL skills and basic Python, what kind of positions should I look for to advance my career? Thanks!

Would also be nice to touch a bit upon what the differences are between SQL development and SQL administration and what other skills/technologies they tie in with.

    }
