I just applied for my first job as a junior developer yesterday doing python, Ruby on Rails, Java. It feels odd being a 36 yr old welder and breaking in brand new but. I’m here for the journey. I’ll keep y’all posted
I secured my first job as a Software Engineer at the age of 39. So do not feel discouraged if your a bit older than the people in this video. All you need is passion and a lot of hard work. Enjoy the journey.
@@gerardconsidinejr3258 Your age doesn't matter. What I see a lot is people getting high-paying jobs in tech by contributing to open-source projects. Once you are confident in your skills you can start doing that. The great thing is that you can pick which projects you work on, and if you are good at it, you will get a job offer where you get to do the same thing you did for that project. It's a new kind of resume and you can contribute to some big-name companies.
Lmaooo literally was up coding from 2am-12pm😭 Time really flies when you’re trying to find that bug, you’re dedicated and thinking you found the bug in 2 hours max. Whole time it’s been 4(over exaggerating) but I love it I learned python in about 2-3 days. Java, C#, and C++ took 1-2 weeks each. I wake up and grind softwares😅 over 10 hours daily. As I type this I’ve been up for 24 hours now😅
Taught myself HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React and know basic PHP hoping to get Junior positions soon! :) Goodluck to everyone who’s on the same journey.
How long did it take you to learn by yourself? And what program/programs did you use ? I want to be a software engineer but I’m debating on going to college for it because I don’t want to come out in debt
if you want to get good at coding learn Java and the four pillars of OOP, C++, Linux and other languages that are more common at bigger companies. HTML, CSS and JavaScript are more for web design, and they likely won't be very useful to you or mean anything on your resume if you do not plan on becoming a web developer. Just some advice🙂

do comp sci workers work a lot of hours (more or less than a 9 to 5)? Wondering if I get into it if I will be able to pursue other things comfortably on the side
Depends on the company. But I mainly work anywhere from 6 to 10 hrs. And OnCall every five weeks. Last job I worked 9-5 but really it was a lot more hours. But that was mostly my work a holism.
In my limited experience depending on the company you can range from 4 hours a day to 12 hours a day in this profession. All about the company, and your own situation
Depends on the company, my last job i worked 30 hours a week, but the comaony shut down. At my current company I work usually 60-70 hours a week and am on call 24/7...but i get paid not enough and they keep shoving more work down my throat. So that's a thing.

I always find it odd when people say "social skills are MORE valuable than technical skills in tech". They are valuable yes, but I wouldn't say more valuable if you are doing the actual engineering / development.
People claim that they work as " Software Engineer " although they do not have an engineering degree, they majored in CS. At the end, you are a software engineer if you only have an engineering degree !
Different universities have them under different umbrellas but in the end they are typically the same. I've been to a Uni where it was included in the Engineering school, I graduated from a Uni where it was its own separate school, there was functionally no difference in either curriculum.
They were right. Yeah, you need to learn how to code but if you can't explain what you're doing or can't build up relationships then it is going to be a hard road ahead
@@beautifullytextured6136 I can explain why I'm doing what, bt I'm not quite sure if I can build relationships, I'm a shy introvert! Should I just die now? 😑 for me trying to communicate with people is no less than climbing mount Everest
I mean, electrical engineers just copy and paste components together till it works, civil engineers copy and paste concrete blocks together, chemical engineers just copy and paste chemicals together till a new one comes out. Using any programming language is essential just copy and pasting machine code as it is all copied and packaged into neat little functions, and keywords etc. We are all building off previous knowledge, no need to reinvent the wheel.
