Honestly, I almost never saw them even then, when I was grinding the G.91s and CL-13 Mk.4. I only ever saw tons of AV-8As, only a Harrier once in a blue moon. Now they're at 10.0, and since I get up-tiered to 11.3 anyway, I still never see them in the F-104s.
@@ODST_Parker weird how matchmaking and rng works for different people. I fly F104-A and I run into a lot of GR1 (I would say 1 in every 3 games has a GR1 for me.)
I'd love to see the Sea Harrier in-game, it had RADAR and could carry AMRAAMs lol. Maybe it'll have to wait until we get Rank VIII and F-14s, Panavia Tornadoes, MiG-29 maybe, etc. As it is the Harriers aren't cancer, people who complain just have a skill issue. They're easy to take down if you know what you're doing, especially GR.1s which don't even have RWR or flares
@@imperialenforcer2271 The "Harriers are cancer" schtick was valid when they were added and the GR1 was at 9.3 or 9.7 with SRAAMs. It's hardly a problem anymore, and the later variants he's talking about would be nowhere near those BR's. Probably at least 10.7 or so. All the other variants have AIM-9G's so it's easy to dodge them, whereas the SRAAMs are literally impossible to dodge unless you have flares. I would love more Harriers to go along with the Air RB EC maps.

Important to note that, at full deflection, the nozzles are angled 100°. When trying to take off this way, it _will_ push you back quite a bit. Stick to 90-80% with your hover binds.
The GR.3 is still my go to CAS for Britain from 9.7 all the way to 11.3. With the SNEB loadout you get 72 very good rockets with High penetration and an accurate Ballistics Computer, and with how many IFV's roam around its easy to rack up 2-5 kills per flight. And even when you do run out of Rockets the ADENS with Ground Belts pack a hard punch. Also VIFF'ing is much more useful in Ground battles compared to Air battles, since you can get uninterrupted 1v1's thanks to the lack of markers and dropping all your speed to meme someone with Thrust Vectoring is a lot more forgiving when there isn't a third player zooming at you at Mach 1.
One thing your forgot to mention is that in ground RB you can land at a heli base to re-arm and then you are given an air spawn right above it. This is the same for all VTOL aircraft in game.
If you keep the harrier above 4000 feet its engine cools, it's not too useful all the time but it can give you a cold engine for a back track through the map at lower altitudes, tou can also take off vertically and pitch up at around 100 meters while punching full throttle and with it's insane performance you will climb vertically
I can't play any of these yet, but whenever we get the AV-8B Harrier II, here's hoping Italy will get it! Since they were added to War Thunder, I remembered how much I love the design.
If you really like the AV-8B the version in DCS is really good. Basically sim only though; but the array of mission profiles you can do is far better than WT.

It was never built.
The vectoring thrust works well in game for turns. Though you dont want to jam them 100% forward. Somewhere between 30 and 50% are the best. They push you through the turn rather than just trying to slow you to get the better turning.
I love this plane, it’s my favorite strike aircraft and I’ve taken the a10 into consideration but the evasive maneuvers, extremely powerful air to ground dumb fire missiles, it’s acceleration and it’s ability to re-arm in no time puts it very far above any strike aircraft I’ve played
Harriers, one of my favourite targets with the Sabre So many new players thought they can do some stupid crap only to stall themselves right infront of my 50 cals

Hey, really minor correction. The water involved in vertical landing here 11:14 isn't actually for engine cooling necessarily, it's a water spray for the intake which cools incoming air and produces additional thrust. The in-game harrier uses it for its WEP mode.
Thrust vectoting is vital to use in this plane if you want to get the full experience. Going to 15% in turns and while facing oponents in delta wings going 90 or 100 so you can cut in and avoid them getting guns on. Also reversing targets going full vector then back to 0 and trying to get guns on target. The harrier isnt a comparable dogfighter to planes at the br when in an equal situation. But its low speed climb rate means you shouldnt get into even sitiations willingly
You can actually use 100% (nozzle down position) and 100% thrust in conjunction with airbrake, to slow down faster than 0% thrust and airbrake.... it just makes conventional landings this much faster and easier, as you bleed speed off without having to fishtail
One very minor note, the Harrier GR.1 was produced for the RAF, not the Royal Navy. The Navy didn't get their navalised Sea Harriers until the late 70s.
the opposite actually: the harrier (at least the av8s with their better engines) perfom very well at high alts and can use to BnZ enemies. the aim9G is substentially more powerfull on higher alts.
I have 4k GE left and passed on the jan sale. Looking for other planes to get as Mig21s wont be on sale till maybe Q3 of 2022. Next sale maybe I'd get harrier instead
Don't get the harrier GR1. It's simply trash. SRAAM are nerfed into the ground, they have no range (they won't reach if you're shooting at a supersonic target from 800 meters away, any closer than that is basically gun range), plane itself has no countermeasures, RWR or even flight performance. Hold on to your SL. I recommend you buy instead the F-89, Su-11, Sea Vixen, Shenyang F-5 or SAAB-105OE. All of these are good aircraft for grinding their trees, however the SAAB and Shenyang require a decent chunk of skill to use, the rest are very straight forward
I just finished spading the AV-8C the other day and man did I have fun. I went like 140 kills and about 30 some deaths. I was only disappointed by the AIM-9Gs..people be dodging 18g missiles a little too easily (yeah you MiG-21)
AIM-9G's are great for long range sneak launches, but are very easy to throw off if launched too close. AIM-9G's have a very large lead angle, and if the player is smart then they just have to turn one way for a while and then the other, and the AIM-9G will have overlead them too much to turn back in.
Im trying to spade it rn, but I have no idea on how to play it, I know that you shouldn’t dogfight with it, but without a good top speed (compared to what’s at 9.7 these days) or good performance at altitude doesn’t look good as a boom and zoom fighter. So I just keep getting clapped by P2W mig-21s
They locked the pitchcontroll when going below 100 km/h so you are forced to do it that way, witch I don't like. Also "full down" is actually a bit to the front
In defense put nozzles at 30%, throttle at 90% if desperate at 100%, vector to home base, keep speed above 900 km/h, canser roll, flare and You can defend Yourself for ages. With takeoff flaps plus nozzles at 40% harrier is decent one circle fighter.
I dont think that Harrier as a POUR maneuverabilitie, the maneuverabilitie is pretty good if you use flaps and vtol at same time, that make to bleed a lot of energy but are really good on vertical turns and scissors
Idk about the british harriers but us ones are so good and fun to fly. Rwr at that br atleast for us tech tree is non existent so thats really nice. And i think the biggest false flag that turns people away from the av-8 is the perception of speed. It does top out at a substantially lower speed than most jets at or above that br. Similair to a su-25 on paper. However theres so much power in the engines that your litterally like always going at that speed. To me it has great energy retention and in a vertical climb your engines have the power to keep you from bleeding speed at the same rate as other fighters. Idk to me this plane is the work horse of the tech tree. I thought it would suck. Unlocked it in the tech tree after getting f5e and f8e unlocked so i was playing in higher br with it and it has been slapping for me lol. Love supringly great planes. And the vtol function is great for ground battles where you can play heli or fighter jet with mighty mouse rockets or capping points. Very unique and surprisingly very enjoyable to fly. Havnt fucked around with it in realistic ab yet just ground rb yet as im still spading it but arcade. It slaps. Sure its similair in realistic just perhaps not flown as hardcore as i do it. Not sure the airframes physical limitations before wings tear if they do.
I wish you would do full review of Harrier GR.1 with changes to BR and nerfs to SRAAM and new plane additions i dont think it is good plane anymore. (getting killed 90th time this week by Aim-9L starts to get really boring really fast with plane without any Flares. You encounter a lot of A10's)
Test-Fly the hell out of both of them, and pick the one you think you're better with. The plane is only as effective as the pilot, and everyone has a different playstyle.

Hey Tim, missile question for you. Do you have an opinion on what the strongest IR AAM is in game atm? I ask because I have very little experience in high tier air combat (virtually none) and some of the folks I talk to in various communities all say different, and often contradictory things. Some believe in their heart of hearts that the R60s are broken and should be completely removed from the game, others think that the AIM-9Gs are better. Do you have any thoughts you'd be willing to share?
R-60s and Matra Magics are probably the best dogfight missiles but are extremely easily flareable when compared to AIM-9Js and Gs, R-60s in my opinion are true dogfight misiles having amazing high aspect performance at close range but that’s about their only advantage, they lack the range Js or Gs have and the flare resistance too.
for dogfighting, the magic is the best ir. for long range, the R24T is the best ir and the best radar is either the Aim-7E2 if you are stupid, or the aim-7F if you have a brain
As owners of gr1 and AV8a, know the harriers family is not a turn fighter but rather strike. They accelerated in climbing rate, so fast at climbing that most opponent I've fight stall too soon catching me (even if they're using missiles on you, USA harriers countermeasures might help). If you got issues with the aim 9g then it's not your skill issues, it's the game itself. War thunder missiles system always have buggy mechanism which led to thin air tracking. But other than that, the harrier might be a love hate relationship and I'd guarantee that I would rather use the harriers than the hunters. Don't give up bruv :)
I feel bad for the GR.1 owners now. It’s 10.0, gets the shortest range missiles In the game that can only fly for 3.7 seconds, has no flares, is sub sonic, and only has dumb munitions. Compare that to the 9.7 frogfoot with its Kh-25’s, flare setups, and 6km lock missiles that also lock all-aspect at 3km. It really got shafted being put at 10.0. Why would something with 2km max missile range and no flares have to fight MiG-23M’s with radar missiles?
Combat tactics aren't related to flight performance. A lot of aircraft perform better/worse in mission profiles that work well in war thunder's game modes.
Call me weird, but any video I see with the word "Explained" in the title gets that channel an instant "Don't Recommend Channel" click. I think that term is offensive, like the viewer is so stupid that they need everything explained to them, which is an insult to the viewers intelligence. A Detailed Review means what it says and yours usually includes a bit of a "How I use it," and "How I set it up" which maintains a level of respect to the viewer. Because those factors are included, along with a bit of history, your reviews are never a "Watch My Epene" segment (unlike all the other so-called reviewers..) Tim's Variety War Thunder is clearly far superior to every "Review" channel on RUclips, and if you havent subscribed, do so. (I NEVER recommend subs, and my doing so for your channel says alot.) Another thing I love is you dont feel the need to beg for likes and subscribes, which gets an instant Like (but I'm already a subscriber so meh) Sometimes the beggers feel a need to flash a graphic for Likes and Subscribes, as well as saying it, which makes me do neither. Call me an @$$hole, but that's t he way it is. If people like your content, they will give likes and probably subscribe. Begging has the oppisite effect on me. I do neither. By no means an expert, but a sim player. VIFFING in combat use 10-15%... Short take off 0% full throttle then 20-30% over 100mph. To not overheat in sim 60 to 75% throttle when your over 600mph. She's a handful in turn combat. Use your roll rate acceleration and the terrane + airbrake and hover to hide in the riverbeds and mountains to get way when in trouble. I hated the premium British harrier (way over tier in sim) so got the AV in sale aswell.. The AV is alot better at it's BR
It's funny how unplayable the GR1 is now compared to how it used to be - no flares or countermeasures and every opponent having all-aspect or radar-guided missiles while most opponents have countermeasures. Amusing to see the old videos describing it as toxic and cancerous when in the present meta it can't even survive to make a kill.
Not a chance. The the harriers with aim9gs are not in any way 10.0 material. And the gr1 is not 10.3 material. Its just not even an option. Go look at the tech tree versions, at the same br as the premium
Given I'm not a WT player, this is probably the most hated airplane added to the game that I know of. Especially the premium version with the SRAAM missiles.
It was, at 9.3 it could fight planes that never should of even fought it, and it was even ahistorical considering the GR.1 never carried SRAAMs in RL but now that it basically faces Phantoms and MiG-21s and it’s not really hated any more
@@TacgnolSimulacrum I do the same - I use the spacebar as my "fire" button, which also spools the weapon, but I added number 4 as a keybind for , I think "lock air to air missile" , which de-spools it if its already locked.
Stay away from the trust vectoring except to take off, and land. Thrust vectoring maneuvers are stupid, and will get you killed. That being said in ground RB you can land and take off much faster and you can use the helicopter base. That is what you are really paying for if you get the premium, and It pays for itself real quickly.
Honestly I’m not sure what to think about this plane, more than 50% of the time I get killed around br 9.7 is due to a harrier or AV8 that got up to space with air spawn and missiled me from behind when I’m still on "my team’s half" of the battlefield and it feels cancerous. I’d honestly like to fly it but I don’t wanna be part of the problem I criticize
16:30 you don't take off on a short deck with vertical take off, you land on it with vertical. That's dumb to even show that. You take off with the short take off and land vertical.

The P.1154 was the proposed supersonic successor to the Kestrel and Harrier. Kestrel was P.1127 and Harrier was developed from it.

Gr1 in sraam mode I highly recommend side climb to 4000m at least then dive on your enemy, you can intercepts ant jet and launch the sraam
It's easier and faster just to land the "old way", brakes are great and you are not a sitting duck. It goes the same way for taking off

I dont think that Harrier as a POUR maneuverabilitie, the maneuverabilitie is pretty good if you use flaps and vtol at same time, that make to bleed a lot of energy but are really good on vertical turns and scissors

Are they still good for bombing bases? Specifically the AV8. I've seen people just go for bombing bases and do good. Not really try and fight in them

Idk about the british harriers but us ones are so good and fun to fly. Rwr at that br atleast for us tech tree is non existent so thats really nice. And i think the biggest false flag that turns people away from the av-8 is the perception of speed. It does top out at a substantially lower speed than most jets at or above that br. Similair to a su-25 on paper. However theres so much power in the engines that your litterally like always going at that speed. To me it has great energy retention and in a vertical climb your engines have the power to keep you from bleeding speed at the same rate as other fighters. Idk to me this plane is the work horse of the tech tree. I thought it would suck. Unlocked it in the tech tree after getting f5e and f8e unlocked so i was playing in higher br with it and it has been slapping for me lol. Love supringly great planes. And the vtol function is great for ground battles where you can play heli or fighter jet with mighty mouse rockets or capping points. Very unique and surprisingly very enjoyable to fly. Havnt fucked around with it in realistic ab yet just ground rb yet as im still spading it but arcade. It slaps. Sure its similair in realistic just perhaps not flown as hardcore as i do it. Not sure the airframes physical limitations before wings tear if they do.
I wish you would do full review of Harrier GR.1 with changes to BR and nerfs to SRAAM and new plane additions i dont think it is good plane anymore. (getting killed 90th time this week by Aim-9L starts to get really boring really fast with plane without any Flares. You encounter a lot of A10's)

Test-Fly the hell out of both of them, and pick the one you think you're better with. The plane is only as effective as the pilot, and everyone has a different playstyle.

Hey Tim, missile question for you. Do you have an opinion on what the strongest IR AAM is in game atm? I ask because I have very little experience in high tier air combat (virtually none) and some of the folks I talk to in various communities all say different, and often contradictory things. Some believe in their heart of hearts that the R60s are broken and should be completely removed from the game, others think that the AIM-9Gs are better. Do you have any thoughts you'd be willing to share?
The R-24T is probably the best overall missile in the game right now.
@Spiritius id say that R-60Ms are no where near “OP” very easily flared and don’t have that much range when compared to its contemporaries,
R-60s and Matra Magics are probably the best dogfight missiles but are extremely easily flareable when compared to AIM-9Js and Gs, R-60s in my opinion are true dogfight misiles having amazing high aspect performance at close range but that’s about their only advantage, they lack the range Js or Gs have and the flare resistance too.
for dogfighting, the magic is the best ir. for long range, the R24T is the best ir and the best radar is either the Aim-7E2 if you are stupid, or the aim-7F if you have a brain
British premium harrier should have the option of using sidewinders or SRAAM, Considering the late one was only a test weapon, and it sucks in game.

I am finding ZERO success with the GR1 or the US AV8C. So far I regret buying both.
As owners of gr1 and AV8a, know the harriers family is not a turn fighter but rather strike. They accelerated in climbing rate, so fast at climbing that most opponent I've fight stall too soon catching me (even if they're using missiles on you, USA harriers countermeasures might help). If you got issues with the aim 9g then it's not your skill issues, it's the game itself. War thunder missiles system always have buggy mechanism which led to thin air tracking. But other than that, the harrier might be a love hate relationship and I'd guarantee that I would rather use the harriers than the hunters. Don't give up bruv :)

I feel bad for the GR.1 owners now. It’s 10.0, gets the shortest range missiles In the game that can only fly for 3.7 seconds, has no flares, is sub sonic, and only has dumb munitions.
Compare that to the 9.7 frogfoot with its Kh-25’s, flare setups, and 6km lock missiles that also lock all-aspect at 3km. It really got shafted being put at 10.0. Why would something with 2km max missile range and no flares have to fight MiG-23M’s with radar missiles?
I started spading the Hunter f6 when it was 10.3 a few months ago and it was surprisingly one of the easiest jets to spade for me
they removed the airspawn for most things at that br, so watch out
you said its not good in hugher altitudes however only good tactic in antiair fight is to dive on someone from high altitude :D
Combat tactics aren't related to flight performance. A lot of aircraft perform better/worse in mission profiles that work well in war thunder's game modes.
Call me weird, but any video I see with the word "Explained" in the title gets that channel an instant "Don't Recommend Channel" click. I think that term is offensive, like the viewer is so stupid that they need everything explained to them, which is an insult to the viewers intelligence.
A Detailed Review means what it says and yours usually includes a bit of a "How I use it," and "How I set it up" which maintains a level of respect to the viewer. Because those factors are included, along with a bit of history, your reviews are never a "Watch My Epene" segment (unlike all the other so-called reviewers..)
Tim's Variety War Thunder is clearly far superior to every "Review" channel on RUclips, and if you havent subscribed, do so. (I NEVER recommend subs, and my doing so for your channel says alot.)
Another thing I love is you dont feel the need to beg for likes and subscribes, which gets an instant Like (but I'm already a subscriber so meh)

Well, I kindof assumed that was a given, since it can land .. pretty much anywhere .. :-)
By no means an expert, but a sim player. VIFFING in combat use 10-15%... Short take off 0% full throttle then 20-30% over 100mph. To not overheat in sim 60 to 75% throttle when your over 600mph. She's a handful in turn combat. Use your roll rate acceleration and the terrane + airbrake and hover to hide in the riverbeds and mountains to get way when in trouble. I hated the premium British harrier (way over tier in sim) so got the AV in sale aswell.. The AV is alot better at it's BR

It's funny how unplayable the GR1 is now compared to how it used to be - no flares or countermeasures and every opponent having all-aspect or radar-guided missiles while most opponents have countermeasures. Amusing to see the old videos describing it as toxic and cancerous when in the present meta it can't even survive to make a kill.

Not a chance. The the harriers with aim9gs are not in any way 10.0 material. And the gr1 is not 10.3 material. Its just not even an option. Go look at the tech tree versions, at the same br as the premium

Given I'm not a WT player, this is probably the most hated airplane added to the game that I know of. Especially the premium version with the SRAAM missiles.
It was, at 9.3 it could fight planes that never should of even fought it, and it was even ahistorical considering the GR.1 never carried SRAAMs in RL but now that it basically faces Phantoms and MiG-21s and it’s not really hated any more

How do you un-lock the missile seeker from whatever it has locked currently? I've seen you do it in a few videos and I can't figure it out.
If you hit your keybind for lock missile a second time, it will de-spool the weapon. I think I mentioned it in my guide to air to air missiles.
@@TimsVariety I didn't recall that, but that would explain why I can't, as I just use the "fire" button to spool them up.
@@TacgnolSimulacrum I do the same - I use the spacebar as my "fire" button, which also spools the weapon, but I added number 4 as a keybind for , I think "lock air to air missile" , which de-spools it if its already locked.
Harrier is pretty fun to fly in arcade, the overheat problem is gone and you can climb like a rocket lol

Stay away from the trust vectoring except to take off, and land. Thrust vectoring maneuvers are stupid, and will get you killed.
That being said in ground RB you can land and take off much faster and you can use the helicopter base. That is what you are really paying for if you get the premium, and It pays for itself real quickly.
Honestly I’m not sure what to think about this plane, more than 50% of the time I get killed around br 9.7 is due to a harrier or AV8 that got up to space with air spawn and missiled me from behind when I’m still on "my team’s half" of the battlefield and it feels cancerous. I’d honestly like to fly it but I don’t wanna be part of the problem I criticize

16:30 you don't take off on a short deck with vertical take off, you land on it with vertical. That's dumb to even show that. You take off with the short take off and land vertical.
I hate this plane so much it made my entire 8.7-9.7 expirience a pain fucking aim9G's when nobodys having flares av8a and av8c
