Hey friends, in today's video I am kind of mapping out a whole year in terms of what I'm planning on buying, what I won't be buying and see how easy or hard it is to stick to these. As always I am trying to live as sustainably and mindfully as possible !

These are my no buy rules for this year:
    1. No new clothes, only second hand, one in one out
    2. No craft supplies
    3. No kitchen gadgets
    4. No decorations
    5. No books (books from the free neighborhood library or for my e-reader are allowed)
    6. Jewelry
    7. Zero waste swaps (already have everything I need or will use)
    8. Tech items (digital games are allowed and maybe a smartwatch, still thinking about that)
    9. No bins, baskets or any other storage items.
I am allowed 1 purchase per month, if necessary!
Items like moisturizer, make up replacements etc are excluded from these rules.

High School sewing teacher & librarian from 🇨🇦 here who loves to repurpose, upcycle, and make homemade gifts. I’m not buying any gifts in 2022, and I aim to share/teach this mindset and skill set with my senior students. I am currently experimenting with crafting Valentine’s cards from old book paper (the older the better), and also faux glassine pouches from cereal box wax paper liners. I’m also creating cards using my 1967 Spirograph set (I adore Spirograph!!) The sky is the limit… and I’m having so much fun while passing away the snowy days of winter. One can do so much these days with simple items that we have kicking around the house... we don’t need to buy stuff in order to be crafty. My whole focus is to create unique gifts, keep stuff out of the waste stream, and to have fun while doing it. So much of my inspiration for this comes from you Immy and your amazing community. Thank-you for sharing your knowledge, ideas, and inspiration. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary💕☃️. PS - Additionally… I’m also that freestyle yoyoist who is not buying any new throws (yoyo’s) in 2022 🪀😃

I’m doing a low buy year inspired by you!! I want to save money and not bring unnecessary stuff into my life. I have a problem of going wandering around in charity shops just for entertainment and then I end up buying clothes I only wear a few times…so that’s what I need to improve on.

I like to keep a list of items want but don’t need right away, and then when my birthday and Christmas come around and my family asks me for gift ideas I can usually tell them to get me those items (if it’s more expensive I’ll suggest a contribution, or to pool on one gift). That way I get those items and also avoid gifts that will just be clutter. This Christmas I got new climbing shoes, hiking gear, and a water bottle (I had lost mine), all things I had asked for :)

My sustainability journey was actually started by a fashion/sewing influencer and TV host (Jenny Skavlan)- she encouraged people to go through with a "shopping stop" (it rhymes in Norwegian) and at 13/14 (I think?) I did it because I thought she was cool, but it really made me think about my shopping habits. I'm halfway through my twenties now and living sustainably has become very important to me. It's so weird to think that it all started because I thought a celebrity was cool and wanted to do the same

I have just been invited to a wedding and have been tearing my hair out about what to wear and how I will afford to buy something and what I could wear again etc. Also thanks for the section on jewellery . About the new mattress: I would highly recommend to buy an exhibition piece. It will be cheaper, but still new and more importantly (depending on the material) , with a brand new mattresse there can be an awful lot of offgassing in the first few weeks, which means the mattress smells and it's also not very healthy. An exhibition piece already offgassed in the shop 👍. Good luck for everything! 🙂🍀

I'm doing a low buy/no buy year myself! I'm not buying makeup with exceptions of products I use whenever I wear makeup when they're out, but I don't have a ton of products I use anymore. I'm also not buying new tech or clothes. My low buy is new organizational stuff (I just moved so I want to try to find second hand first) and books (unless it's an author I want to support).

Come to Denver. I’m originally from Santa Monica CA and even though it snows here in Denver, it never really feels very cold. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I lived in Portland OR for a couple of years and truly needed cold weather clothing because of the rain. Being cold and wet is miserable. In Colorado, because it’s high desert, when it’s 30° it feels more like 50° and you’d better be wearing sunscreen. I haven’t worn more than a sweater with puffy vest in 4 years. All of the clothes I purchased to stay warm in Oregon weren’t necessary here in Colorado and have been resold. You’d love it!

I know I’m watching/commenting 2 weeks after this was posted, but this video made me think about how much money I saved from switching to reusable menstrual products…. I used to have really heavy, painful periods, and a pack of pads/tampons cost $15-20…. My period cup was $40 and I made up for the cost within literally about 2 months. It’s been about 10 years since switching and I’ll never go back

It is the hardest thing in the world to go through and clear out my closet, and then not want to immediately refill it haha. So I totally understand! Saying no new specifically does help so much with that though. Having to physically go out and shop in a store where you can't predict much of what's there has helped me a TON with shopping. I'm at a point where I'm making lists of items I want and I have to really want them to be willing to search for it! It's not perfect, I've had to buy a few things online specifically for plus sized athletics, but even then I've been able to find plenty of items for hella cheap and I got to negotiate the price which of course is another huge reason to buy secondhand. ☺

This is a smart idea! I'm also trying to spend less and not having things dictate my life. I can think of two things that I absolutely shouldn't and won't buy and that is boots (I have a pair of really warm winter ones, and a Dr Martens that I bought last year) and coats (I have two beautiful coats already).
I don't think I can commit to absolutely not buying an entire category of things, but I'm trying to lessen my consumption a lot and be even more mindful about all my purchases. Last year I switched to almost exclusively buying things second hand. Especially clothes, only exception is shoes and underwear and like, one pair of sweatpants. When it comes to things for the home I try my best and have found a lot of good things second hand! Pans, saucepans, salad/serving cutlery and all of our Christmas decorations! Since 2020 I've really tried hard to shop more second hand and I just become better and better at it. I really liked and resonated with what you said about being forced to be more mindful about your purchases! I've been trying to put that thought into words myself but haven't really known how to explain it but you said it perfectly.

I am very motivated on low buy this year which I usually don't do (fortunately I hate shopping so no overbuying but still could be more intentional). However being pregnant with first child it is difficult, I already know I will buy things that are not necessities because it is really difficult position when you are supposed to take care of another human being and you have to responsibility. So my only commitment I made is ask friends, buy second hand and resell everything possible.
