My problem with modern story games is that they feel more like movies with tiny gameplay segments rather than games with good stories. You spend most of the game walking from point A to point B, talk to am npc/watch a cutscene, then walk from point B to point C. The last actual game with a story that blew me away was War of the Lions and that was forever ago

@@goodtimesgivecancer1 There are a ton of exceptions to this rule though if you look at more than just AAA mainstream titles. Tons of games have excellent stories. Baldur's Gate 3 is the most recent example of this but I am blown away by game's stories all the time. You just gotta keep an open mind and play a lot of games while avoiding all the AAA shovelware that companies like Blizzard and Ubisoft release.

  • @CaramelMeako

On the topic of repayability one thing no one ever talks about is how different replayability is between MP and SP. Replayability in SP is often seen as a tangible aspect like new game plus or side quest and critics of SP will cite that as to SPs superiority but what a lot of people overlook, including pro MP people, is the human element of MP not found in SP.
I remember having a conversation with someone on discord who hates MP because theres no replayability, its just the same experience over and over according to him where as with fallout 4(his prefered game) he said he could run so many different characters and playthroughs.
I made the point that replayability is subjective much like how genre is subjective and that a big part of replayability for MP is experience.
For example my prefered game is R6 Siege, and the whole reason i love playing it is because even after years of playing and being in the higher skill brackets i am STILL learning new things. New angles to watch something, New ways to approach a situation, new ways to outsmart peopl, and even new ways to counter these new idea im learning if when someone uses them against me. This constant unending potential for new knowledge is a form of replayability.
Another somewhat related aspect is people dont keep playing the same way forever. At a certain point all the best players can play at a similar and eventually someone somewhere is going to get creative and find a new solution that eventually all the best players will copy and adapt to and it will eventually trickle down the skill ladder creating what we as gamers call "metas". This constant evolution drivin by competition leaves so much room for untapped potential and is a form of replayability.

I'm not sure that single player games have higher requirements than multiplayer games. One reason that I don't want to play multiplayer games is that they require a huge amount of hours for you to to be competitive. It's not fun to always lose or be on the bottom of the score board so you need to play a lot to be successful.
In single player games on the other hand you don't have to be bleeding edge to enjoy the story and the gameplay. You can even cheat or get help if you just want to progress the story.

I was a hardcore online MP gamer back when I was a teen in the 360/PS3 era, the golden age of online gaming imo. I played nothing but Gears of War, Halo, and CoD, 24/7. Only occasionally played SP games but now as an adult I've done a complete switch, I mostly play SP games. I'll occasionally play online MP but not for too long. To me, SP games just give me a better gaming experience, online can be fun if you're a competitive person or have people to play with but nothing beats a captivating story and exciting gameplay of a SP game.

I’d have to agree with a lot of points that you hit throughout this video, I had this realization sometime either last year or two years ago when I picked up smash bros and started (still have yet to finish LOL) the story mode on hard. It was through that I remembered the calming and “true” peace of video games and not the mindless fun time highs I was spending back to back with friends ): I definitely think it’s possible to enjoy both, but it’s just about moderation. As for me, I’ve chosen to jus keep multiplayer games as my “social night” with friends who are too far to connect in person and not something to grind on (I never really was a type to solo multiplayer rank type games). Mario bros wonder i think is out now, and I’ve been wanting to pick up Kirby’a forgotten land for a while now, hopefully sometime soon I’ll be able to experience and enjoy games like “the good old days” :) thanks again for making this video! Discovering how far you can push the game against other live players at an arcade. I devoted 10 years to Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and ignored every new game I bought because I kept discovering new strategies. In the fighting game scene, I discovered players who specialize in one game. There are those who only play Street Fighter 2 Turbo to this day in 2023. Having too many games to play is a good problem from the gamers side. I remember back in the NES days, I rented Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers from Blockbuster and beat it in 30 minutes. Then replay it because it was simply enjoyable to play. Like rewatching a good movie.

Ok but there's also games in the middle. There are plenty of titles, primarily or exclusively in single-player, which do not ask much of you in the beginning and are not some huge emotional investment major plotline to follow etc, while having tons of replayability and rewarding time spent from the player. Think of Tetris, Binding of Isaac, Terraria, Slay the Spire, Candy Crush, Stardew Valley, you get the idea. Some of these titles are absolutely massive in terms of popularity, and can get pretty notorious for having some of the playerbase clocking in insane hours spent similar to online multiplayer titles like League and CSGO. I don't even wanna imagine what those soccer moms who only play candy crush got for their hours played
Putting life/time concerns aside, I think having one of such titles in your repretoire makes for a much healthier/well-rounded game rotation

The only game in a while that has broken my cycle of switching to and from RL and Apex is No Man’s Sky. The story is pretty great, and the idea that you can constantly upgrade, build bigger bases using the thousands of different materials and technologies at hand, make your squadron larger, etc. really helps to bring back that constant sense of progression that you would get in the type of multiplayer games mentioned. I feel bad for the ppl who stopped playing after the release flop because now it is a really solid game.

I've been through this years ago, decided I had broke far too many controllers now I have 1000 hours in minecraft and couldn't be happier for it.
It's really hard to break from the cycle of misery that is modern shooters like fortnite, cod and apex but it is SO worth it you just have to find something you're really passionate about (for me it was God Of War 2018) to outweigh the addiction of "well I've got nothing else to do".
You do have other things that you can do you've just gotta find them
If you push past the addiction, and yes it is an addiction for many people, it's worth it and you will never want to look back.
I'm very lucky to have been able to push out of the endless cycle of yearly cod releases so young, with help from people around me I got out at around 14.
Good luck with what you decide to do with your life :)

I think some of the most fun I ever had while playing a game was in gunfight with one of my best friends, and I'm glad my time taking PVP seriously was able to end on a good note. I wish more game developers would implement the kind of NG+ Devil May Cry has in their games, it's pretty much the only kind of NG+ that matters. What's the point of carrying over all your gear to the next playthrough if nothing can challenge you? Up the difficulty, change every encounter, and make the stronger enemies appear early, maybe even introduce a new mechanic in the hardest difficulty too (devil trigger for enemies in DMC's case).

for my experience when you get older it just comes down to time to play and commitment. I have so many single player backlog games I need to beat and I'm sure I would love to play them all. It's just for me when I'm older I just don't have the mega free time to play them. Especially with working full time. It's just nice to get home and hop on a few games of some multiplayer games with my friends and go to sleep and repeat my days. usually on my days off I really want to play a good story game, but I always end up getting distracted or end up just thinking about things I should be doing. Basically, it's just down to growing older, not having a lot of time. As well there are sooooo many new games coming out so it's easy to get distracted by another new shiny game and the pile just adds on. I miss the old days where there was just a small variety of good games. Now it feels like a gamble if a game is going to be good and then you just end up going back to the comfortable games you always want to play. That's what I have come to realize. I just wish I had more time.

For me, Monster Hunter fills the perfect niche for this. It's absolutely endless replayability, because you're always challenging yourself to find new ways to beat the monster, to beat it faster, exploring new play styles, trying new builds, and there's so many endless combinations of skills and playstyles that it's pretty much infinite. Not to mention the combat itself is absolutely exhilarating. But it's also multiplayer, so you can go burn time goofing off with people and the level of challenge varies greatly due to all the different types of monsters in the game. Truly my favorite franchise of all time.

I always wondered why I couldn't get into open world games or games with huge swathes of content, and I realized that the gameplay loop of these games are generally just not enticing to me. My favorite games are respawn shooters (i.e, CoD, Halo, Titanfall, etc.), and it really is how you describe it. I like the challenge of online shooters and how different every game plays and I can more or less choose how long my play session is. With open world or story driven games, it feels like the more time I spend *away* from them, the harder it is to get back in.
Although, I have been exploring a bit with indie roguelikes and reverse bullet heavens and turns out I really like meta progression too. Maybe I'm just not a story guy shrug.

Like grinding in a single-player game but has real-life consequence (e.g. developing muscle memory, improving reaction time, motor skills, etc). As someone who prioritizes story over multiplayer for games I still am obsessed with Counter-Strike, and I like to no-brain some fun MP games here and there. I'm replaying RDR2 for the 3rd time now and when im done for the day i hop on CS. Fun times.
