Hi there and thanks so much for the message! Oh yeah, you are never too old to have fun! Both Rob and I will be 60 this year, so we will be proper "old gits"!!! Take care! :O)
@@CollinBaillie Everything is relative. I'm 55 now and I can tell you I feel much older than I did at 53. Mind you, between now and then I did manage to bust numerous bones and blow up a spleen riding a "hyper-escooter" into a minivan at 40mph. So there's that... ;)
Hello. I am new to your channel and just have a tip, perhaps. All of the brushed motors I buy will be broken in under water. I simply solder one onto an esc so I have speed control and submerge. I will run it in the direction that it will run in the car to begin with to set the brushes. I will allow it to run alternating speed from 25% to 50% all the way to max allowing possibly a full minute at each speed. I have found an incredible difference in over all performance and longevity. When done I will remove from the water and run until dry while oiling the bearings/bushings since they will be warm and more apt to accept the oil. This is also how I clean all my brushed motors. Its made a huge difference for me. Be Blessed...
Hello Chris, great to read you! I hope you are enjoying the channel. Thanks for that great tip, I have heard that a break-in underwater is better for the motor, i think I tried it many, many years ago! But I will have a go with my next brushed motor and see how it goes. I'll also have a go at cleaning a couple of motors this way. Thanks again, be blessed, too!
I upgrade nearly all my cars to torque tuned, these are so cheap and a perfect fit for vintage chassis without wrecking them. Got them for 3 Eur per motor and bought a lot of them 😅 great vid mark!
Couldn't agree more, Marcus, the Torque Tuned hits the sweet spot! Even better at the price you paid, I wish we could get them that cheap here! Thanks for the great comment my friend! :O)
Thanks, Sean! You know, I missed Rob's comment as I was fitting the motor but howled when I watched the footage back! 😂 That's why I had to include that clip! Glad to hear you enjoyed it, too! Absolutely, everyone needs a mate like Rob... 😂
Great test, Mark ! Uhh, you had me laughing I must admit. Two old guys with their toys out in the park freezing 🥶 😂 But having a laugh about it. That’s the spirit. It helps being out with your mate. I remember me out alone in the winter filming speed runs and not laughing at all ☺️ Really enjoyed seeing the results too. I’ve had my brand new Tamiya cans lined up for this test for several years now, but haven’t found the time or the energy (yet). I wonder why the sport tuned didn’t perform better … I can definitely feel the difference between that and the torque tuned. But yeah, the most notable difference is between the 27T and the torque tuned. Especially taking the price into consideration. But I think I’ve had 4-5 kph difference between the Sport and Torque back in the past. Maybe that TT with the small wheels winds out, gearing wise, too quickly? And what about the battery? Was it a NiMH? I love NiMH, but for several speed runs, one after the other, the voltage drops way too quickly. A couple of minutes and it is measurable. Well, it was a good test non the less. I still think the Sport Tuned is worth the money. Like you said, especially off road. Especially if one doesn’t want to change the standard ESC or risk any heat issues (or spend the money on a brushless motor and a sensor cable). Thank you so much for the video, Mark. Best to you my mate.
Hello Mikael, lovely to read you again my friend! Glad we could raise a smile, playing simply isn't playing without the fun factor! But sometimes we have to do what needs to be done in order to run a RC channel! Yes, I've had these motors for many months, waiting for the time to be able to do the test. We also waited for the weather, but at this time of year we had to take the best we could get! Not sure why I didn't see the bigger difference in performance that you did, it could be many factors that affected this, especially the tolerances of the motors or the gearing. I just thought it best to test each motor in exactly the same platform. Yes, it was a LiPo battery, and I checked the voltage to see if it was OK for each run. I didn't use a NiMh for exactly the reasons you stated. Yeah, I still think the Sport Tuned is worth buying. Thank you so much for watching and leaving a great comment, best to you too, my mate!
Many thanks, Jon! I'm glad you enjoyed the fun in the video, I'd hoped it would come across, that's what RC is about for us. Oh yes, everyone should have a mate like Rob! 😂 All the best to you, wishing you a great weekend!
Thats my experience as well. Cheap motors usually perform way worse than the Tamiya motors. There are exceptions but Tamiya is the brand I trust when it comes to brushed motors.
Hi Brent, always great to read you my friend! Hope all is well with you 🙏. Thanks for the comment, yeah, apparently Carson do make 540 motors, thing is, we need to avoid them! 🤣 All the best, dude! 😁 👊👍
Thanks Andy! I'm glad we did this test, I always assumed the motors would be close in performance, but that Cup Machine is an imposter! All the best, fella, talk soon!👍
I don't get it. Here in the Netherlands The cup machine is the prescriped motor for the tamiya cup stock class. Can't imagine they let you run a slower motor then a silver can. Greetz Dennis
Hi Dennis. I'm as confused as you are my friend! The Cup Machine is sold here in the UK as an upgrade from the silver can. I really was expecting it to be as good as the Sport Tuned. As you can see, I was very disappointed!
Thanks for this comparison. I've heard a lot of rumors about the weaknesses of the Carson motor and your video confirms it. Great video. Thank you for your tireless efforts in the cold 😎🤘
No worries my friend! Yeah I had heard a few say the Carson motor was weak, but thought I'd better find out myself. What a waste of money! Thanks to you for watching and leaving a great comment 👍
Wow, that was a surprise, I was expecting the Cup Machine to be better. I race a TT01e truck at my local club, and most of us run the Torque Tuned motor, it seems to outlast the Sport Tuned and isn't a lot slower. Great video!!
Hi Barry, well that makes two of us (3 including Rob!) Yeah the Cup Machine was such a disappointment! Great to know that you guys tried and tested the Torque Tuned, I'm with you on this one. Cheers! :o)
is this test done on 1 single battery or did every motor had it's own battery, btw i have the torque tuned, sport tuned and the cup macchine because we use the cup macchine for the Top Stock class @ the Tamiya cup here in the Netherlands and we hate the motor, with the cup machine good tuned car you can do 30 mph but every engine is different (between the 27 and 33 MPH). best for racing is both torque and sport tuned, short tracks use the torque tuned and long tracks with lots of high speed use the sport tuned and like you say, ditch the cup machine.
Hi there! The test was done using the same LiPo battery. It seems you know these motors very well! I'm pleased you agree with me about the Cup Machine! Thanks for the interesting words and best regards from Mark... Cheers! 😎👍
@@MarkBryanRC within the cup machine there is so much difference that it is not funny anymore to use as a racing engine, as a racing engine on the same platform the Torque Tuned is way better and lives longer than the cup machine, at the moment i am trying to kill a torque for almost 5 years still has it torque and top speed as it was brand new.
Hey James, yeah it's definitely gonna get used on those alloy "bodges"!!! Good to know we are all in the TT02 speed challenge, good luck lads and lasses!
Nice heads up showdown and thanks for freezing for us all to do it! I am surprised the motors are that different in price there as they are usually only 2 or 3 dollars difference between the sport and torque tuned motors. My favorite motor is the GT tuned and it both looks great but has gobs of power and I can usually get them for around $27-28 US. It is my favorite buggy motor for sure!
Thanks for watching and leaving a great comment dude! Wow, you guys over the pond get such a better deal on hop up motors than we do! If I could get them at those prices, none of my cars would have the stock motor!!! Thanks for the tip, I will put the GT Tuned on my list! Cheers 🍻
I bought a few Torque Tuned motors a while ago since I assumed they were good value for money, based on nothing really other than that the TT-02S is equipped with it so it should be an upgrade over a silver can. It also looks better with that sticker. Seems my assumption was right! I do also have a Cup Machine, because I wanted to participate in the Dutch Tamiya cup a few years ago (but never did) and that's the motor they use for the top stock class.
Hi! Well you did the right thing buying those motors! It's also been my goto motor of choice for the last few years and I've been happy with the performance they give. Did you ever run a car with that Cup Machine? I was wondering if I just got one from a bad batch! Best wishes from Mark...
I’m told lots of the racers of TT01 / TT02 use a Core 21 turn. Be interested to add one of those into your test. Of course, make sure it’s a freezing day again 😂
Cool, thanks for that, dude! Yeah, I heard the Core RC motors are a great budget buy. I have a 15T in my Lunchbox and it's bonkers! I'll see if I can get a 21T. In the cold, of course! All the best from Mark... :))
Hey you two! I agree that I would love to have an RC buddy here on the Rock. I love watching you two have a blast. Thanks for the terrific show down and break down of these motors. I opted for a bulk buy of several torque tuned on a whim due to price. But it seems I chose right! Cheers dudes!
Hi dude, so you got a bulk buy of torque tuned motors? I think you can rightfully engage "smug mode"!!! 😂👊 Good choice my friend! I'm really pleased to read that you enjoyed our antics, much appreciated here. But yes it is true, everyone needs a friend like Rob 🤣👊👍
as mine is not for regulated races , i just went and put an absima eco brushless combo in :) plenty fast , 3S lipo compatible and still well balanced :)
Hi Mark, mainly go for a torque tuned motor for buggys like grasshopper-hornet Bit move up to dirt tuned which is more but hundreds better for upgrades
Same here, Pete - mainly due to cost. I have so many cars that I couldn't afford to fit the decent Tamiya motors with replaceable brushes (wish I could!) but for the money the TT motor is a good choice! Cheers! 👌👍
It sure is a good motor, Joe! The App on my phone connects to the Hyper-Go HG-T22 Smart Radio System that includes a GPS module connected to the receiver. It's a great system!
Gearing is also important. You say there is only 1mph difference between the Torque and Sport tuned. But that isn’t actually true. As you aren’t factoring in gearing and acceleration. If you took the Sport tuned and increased the gearing you could match or still out accelerate the Torque Tuned. But being able to pull taller gearing could give significantly higher top speeds.
That's a good point, I should do a follow up video between the Torque and Sport Tuned and different gears! Yes only 1mph difference on stock gearing, I had to keep it simple for this video. I've been doing a few speed challenges lately and used both high torque and high RPM motors and a massive variation in gearing options. My best speeds (45mph on a brushed MF01X and same for a TT02) were with high rev motors and low gearing.
Hi there and thanks to you, too! I was using the Hyper Go HG-T22 Smart Radio System as sent for review by MJXRC. It's a great system that comprises of a transmitter with dual rate steering and throttle, a 3 channel receiver and a GPS module. You can the download the app and connect your phone to the transmitter via Bluetooth. I don't know what a BT component is!?!?!
@Mark Bryan I have a Tamiya Sports tuned motor (23T) and I also have a hobbywing QUICRUN 1060 ESC … is the 1060 compatible with this motor ??? I’m gonna chick it on my DT 03 Tamiya neon fighter. Or am I better off buying the Tamiya TBLE-04S Electronic Speed Controller which I know is compatible ✅
Excellent, il go for that then. One more question as I’m here , the rims 🛞 on this Tamiya Neo Fighter DT 03 are the worst I’ve seen in my life , I need to upgrade them , however they seem very difficult to get hold of, any ideas 💡??
@@nikko7507 I don't like the Astral wheels on the Neo Fighter either! The Racing Fighter Star Dish wheels are much nicer, you should be able to find some of those online! :)
Hey Mark, great video! I am shocked by the performance on that Carson motor. It is in my Kyosho Raider rebuild which is clearly holding the old girl back on the Orchard Raceway. It is out and in the bin for next season! Thanks dude 🙌🏻👍🏻
Hi Craig! Oh yeah, I was as shocked as you by the Cup Machine (lack of) performance! I would imagine that your Raider will be much faster on a Torque Tuned motor! Hehe, "Bin the Cup Machine" is gong to be a new saying from now on! Take care, matey! :))
@@col72 Hi Col, I did think about it, but it's 21T max, I have one, it isn't rated for Tamiya ESC's. But yeah, it is faster, I got 21mph in a stock TT02 when I tested one, so 2mph faster than Torque Tuned!
Torque Tuned is my ‘go to’ motor for most of my vintage Tamiya’s, I find it’s just right and like you say cheaper than the Sport Tuned. I have one of those Carson Cup Machines, it’s ok but not as fast as the Tamiya’s own motors like you demonstrated
Hiya Martin! Same here, I think the Torque Tuned motor hits the "sweet spot" between price and performance. Glad to hear that it wasn't just me getting something wrong with the Carson motor, it really is underwhelming compared to the other two! Cheers! :)
Hi Mark great informative video and very interesting to see the comparison between them. I’ll make sure to save this video for future reference for when I’m in position to upgrade. Have a great weekend best wishes
Hi Peter, glad you found it interesting, my friend! I think you can't go wrong with a Torque Tuned in terms of value for money. The Absima Eco Thrust is also a good budget hop-up. Take care, mate! :))
Hi Richard, thanks for the message, it really is good to know that we got similar results! And yes, I shall be keeping the Cup motor for exactly the same reason as you! 😂😂😂
Cheers, Darris! We have a few more videos in the pipeline, I do enjoy doing a comparison as I find them interesting to make. Oh yes, if only everyone had a friend like Rob! 😂
Hey you both. Thanks for the testing. I'm still a fan of the Sport Tuned because it works on big-wheelers very well, too. Maybe I can help you with the specs of the Carson and hopefully I had done the right translation: - nominal voltage 6 V - voltage range: 4,8 - 8,4 V - rpm at best effeciency (60,1 %) 28.000 - nominal rpm 16.400 - torque 1,69 Ncm - amperage 8,7 A - power 28,8 W Carson is like Aldi. Cheap parts but also a 50/50 chance of getting a bad upgrade.
@@MarkBryanRC we were there a few hours ago🤣. Some things are really tasty and for some things you noticed the b-production. But if you have the experiences you can really lower the monthly costs. Same for Carson, I thing it's always a question who produces for them. They are just a distributor.🤔 BTW I searched some forums here about this motor, noones really happy about it. Some recomment to skip directly to a brushless.🙄
@Jesskha Ich sage es mal so. Upps, mom. Let me say it this way, yes bearings are okay. That's how they get their feets into the door. Radiosets are great, speaking of the big ones. Truck parts and trailers are great. Some parts fit some not. I don't use their servos, only some parts from their DT-03 upgrades. The summary is if they buy cheap, they sell chap. And the customer has to pay for it. I use two Absima 3channel radios, no probs. But I have to admit I drive off-road just for fun, no tracks and no need to be precise. So maybe I hadn't recognized a bad quality😉
No problem, Michael! For this speed test, I was using the Hyper Go HG-T22 Smart Radio System as sent for review by MJXRC. It's a great system that comprises of a transmitter with dual rate steering and throttle, a 3 channel receiver and a GPS module. You can the download the app and connect your phone to the transmitter via Bluetooth. You can find out more about the HYPER GO HG-22 Smart 2.4G Radio System here: www.mjxrc.net/goodshow/hg-t22-t22.html I think you can but it from Banggood.com and AliExpress but not sure, you'll need to do a search. I do know that its only about £30 though. All the best!
I have allways wondered the difference between the "can" motors by tamiya, because in my experience a kit that comes with a sport or torque tuned motor isn't labeled like they are if bought separately. and they can be confused with plain ol silver can motors. thanks for the information 👍
Another great video Mark and Rob 👍 I've got an XV01, and a TT02 and TT01E both rally spec. I've got a sport tuned in the XV and torque tuned in the TTs. The performance seems so close to me the torque tuned is a total bargain. You could see in your vid the car came alive with the torque and the sport motors fitted. Plus I think this level of performance is perfect for a realistic looking rally drive experience.
Thanks, dude. Great to here that you and I agree about the motors. At least I can't be too far away from the truth! Totally agree, those motors are just right for a scale experience, sometimes too fast can be too much! Cheers! :)
Nice one guys, I'm confused on the turns, I recently got a 9turn from abroad it was quick but is it OK to use with the tam esc as it's drawing lot power 👍👌
Hi Paul! Yeah, basically, the lower the number of turns a motor has, the more current it draws from the ESC and the higher it revs. Most Tamiya ESC's have a motor limit of 23 turns. If you fit a lower turn motor you are in danger of drawing too much current and burning out the ESC. Hope this helps! :)
Awesome Test Mate!!!! You know how we always seem to think the same thing? Well, you know that TT02 Yaris I have, well........... I'll have to tell you more on the other thing. Great Job Dude, Love It!!!!!!!
Thanks a ton my good friend 👍 We sure do seem to have the same thoughts! Now you gotta let me know what's going on with your tt02!! Cheers and catch you later mate 👍 👌 😉
Hi! I think the Sport Tuned because it has the most torque and the highest revs. As an alternative, look at the Absima Eco-Thrust range, 21T, 18T and 15T all at about £10, absolute bargains!
Thanks for the feedback - I have a Core RC 15T that performs very well, trouble is you need to change the Tamiya ESC to use it. I'll see what I can do in the future to compare more brushed motors. All the best from Mark... :)
Oh yes it was so bad bud I'm sure I fitted it and wired it correctly! Other people have commented how slow they found the Cup Machine to be, so it's not just me! Cheers! 😎👍
Great vid, Looked like a fun day. With low turn motors you generally need to lower the gearing so they can spool up to speed and give the performance that was expected. Granted that Carson motors isn't really low turn so still should have been able to pull the standard gearing but it might be worth a try.
Thanks very much! Yep, Tamiya do tell you to use lower gearing with the Sport tuned. I have tested this with an M03. But the car was fastest on the higher gearing. No heat issues either. But yeah, I might give that a try with the Carson as it's torque is so low, thanks for the advice! Cheers 🍻 😎👍
I have seen the Torque Tuned motor to be the standard motor with some Tamiya models recently. Still my son and I considered an upgrade to the Sports Tuned. Not without proper data/evidence of course! Thanks a lot, chaps! 😆
Hi and many thanks for the comment! Yes the Torque Tuned motor does come in a lot of kits these days and is an excellent "stock" motor. Still my goto value for money motor. The Sports Tuned has a little edge on the Torque Tuned, bit it is only a little! All the best from Mark. 😎👊👍
Oh yes, that's common with the Sport Tuned - to get the best out of it try dropping down a tooth or two on the pinion gear. Should have fantastic acceleration and less overheating! 😎👍
Hi Stephen. The receiver comes with the Hyper Go HG-T22 Smart Radio System as sent for review by MJXRC. It's a great system that comprises of a transmitter with dual rate steering and throttle, a 3 channel receiver and a GPS module. You can the download the Hyper-Go app and connect your phone to the transmitter via Bluetooth. The phone holder is included with the radio system.
Great video thanks Mark. I use the Torque Tuned motor on my TT02 and XV01 with Lipo 2S batteries and I’ve been more than happy with the torque and top speed. Perfect for my local rally track😊
Hi Shouwn, cheers 🍻 for the comment 👍. Yep, the Torque tuned is a good value for money motor, great to hear you're happy with them! Best regards from Mark 😎
Really useful mini review. Would have been interesting to see the acceleration differences on a higher grip surface/tyres but this test is a great illustration. Do any clubs allow the Sport Tuned or are they all Torque Tuned only? Have a Sport Tuned in my 'rally' TT-02 and really like it. Glad to see the difference in the specs is born-out in testing.
Hi there, great to hear that you found this test useful 👍. I agree about testing on a better surface but I'm afraid that's all we had available at the time! Not sure about what clubs allow as I have never been in an RC club!!!! It's just me and Rob most of the time! Thanks for the great comment, all the best from Mark and Rob! 😁👊👍
Man, these are my favourite rc videos! You guys did great thank you for the content! I'm just wondering what device are you using to measure the speed on display to your phone? I'd love to get something like that, do you have a link? Thank you!
Thanks a ton, dude! It was a blast making this video, I've always wanted to put these motors to the test. As for the GPS speed meter, it's a Hyper-Go HG-T22 Smart Radio System. The GPS unit connects to the Radio receiver in the car and the transmitter connects by Bluetooth to the app on your phone. The only place I can find it for sale is on AliExpress, a google search should find it for you! Cheers!👍
@@bootztechrc4881 You're welcome! As far as I can tell, it's pretty cheap, £28 GBP for the full system including transmitter and radio, I find it works well as just a radio system, even without the GPS!
Clearly there is quite a difference in cheap price and cheap quality. I wasn't at all surprised at the results. I just had an instinct that cheap motor would be total pants. The Torque Tuned is a good cheap (price) quality motor.
Hi Nick and cheers for the comment! You hit the nail on the head! The crazy thing is that the "cheap" Carson motor cost me the same as the Torque Tuned motor, and yes, it's now in the bin - what a total waste of money!
That's really good info, Mark! I think your results were probably quite accurate, it matches what I have heard about those Tamiya motors. I haven't yet tried the sport tuned, maybe someday I should try it. For non-Tamiya options, well, apparently Carson isn't really an option, that was disappointing! I started buying Holmes motors, they cost 15 dollars, plus shipping and import tax, so far they have been amazing, except that one got fried of course, but sadly also with them, they don't provide any numbers. It's a jungle finding a good motor apparently, part of the charm of the hobby, ha ha! Have a great Sunday there, mate!
Thanks Mads! Yeah well at least we tested all the motors in the same chassis and conditions and the same battery. The feedback I'm getting seems to prove I'm in the right ballpark! Throw the Carson in the bin!!! Yeah I have heard good things about Holmes motors but haven't seen them for sale over here 😕. I like the cheap Absima Eco Thrust motors but they ain't compatible with Tamiya ESC's. All the best my mate, have a cool Sunday 😎 👍
@@MarkBryanRC Mark, there is or was actually a place in UK that sells Holmes stuff. but last I checked, they didn't have the Retro Sport series, and now recently I read on Facebook, someone told it's no longer possible to buy Holmes from there, sadly...

@@zokusharuuku1091 Good point! On my other TT02's I have fitted the adjustable steering tie-rods, and yes, the car is more stable with a little "toe-in"!
I have two tamiyas and one came with a sport tuned tt-02D and a lunchbox where I thought about torque or sport tuned. Here I also got the sport tuned... Because I have money 😅 that was a joke.
Haha, I actually liked your joke! But it is true, if money is not an issue, we would all buy the Spot Tuned, because it's a better motor all-round! Cheers! :)
You’re welcome! That’s very good for stock gearing! I have a Tamiya Torque Tuned motor and I want to make my Tamiya TT-02 go 30mph+ on 2s Lipo. Is this possible? Do you know the highest gearing I could possible get out of the Torque Tuned motor? I just don’t want to damage the motor. I’ll put a heatsink with fan for sure. Thank you!
Hello again! I don't think you could get 30+ mph out of a Torque Tuned motor. The biggest pinion you can fit is 25T, stock is 22T. You might get about 24mph with the biggest pinion. You can gear higher but you'd need the Tamiya High Speed gear set, then you can go up to a 27T pinion, but I still think you'll need a faster motor to pass 30mph!
Tamiya got the claimed data for their motors all wrong. For example the sport tuned motors (black can) can no way be 350 g-cm, in my TXT-1 with stock gear ratio they lacking the uphill/climbing power compared to the stock 540-J and the run time is nearly half as short. The 540-J is more like 320 g-cm (not the claimed 255) and the black can sport tuned more like 250-260 instead of 350... lets hope the new silver can sport tuned ones has more torque
Hi and many thanks for your input! I agree, it doesn't really matter what is quoted in the figures, it's how they operate in real-world situations. The figure I quoted was for the new silver can sport tuned, lets hope it's actually true! Cheers!

Very informative stuff mate - I was engrossed by that. Personally I would go for the Torque Tuned, because as you pointed out, 1mph slower for half the price seems like the best deal. Of course if you were in some kind of competitive event then the Sport Tuned would be the best option. As for the Carson, well let's not even go there. You do have to be careful with the Sport Tuned though. Several months ago I saw a video by TOMLEY RC where he was testing 3 different Sport Tuned motors - the original, an updated original and a third that was retailing everywhere for about £13.00. You guessed it, the £13.00 one was total pants which turned out to be some Chinese fake, although it completely looked the part. So never by a brand new Sport Tuned for that price. Take care mate and have a good weekend...🙂👍🏻🙂👍🏻.
Hiya mate and thanks for the informative feedback! You are spot-on about the Sport and Torque Tuned motors. I did see that Tomley video about the Chinese knock-off motors and it was a great warning, I hope others read you comment and take heed. As usual, you pretty much always get what you pay for. Hope all is good with you my friend, take care and all the best 👍
Hiya matey. Hey that was the information that all Tamiya fans needed to know so great work you guys. I'm surprised by that Carson one. Maybe send that to Derek although it still might be a bit fast for him 🤣 Before I got into brushless motors all those years ago the Sport Tuned was the one I'd get and it did seem super quick at the time. One of the things I did find with brushed motors was that they do pack up much quicker than brushless ones especially if you run the cars on the beach. I've got a whole bunch of dead brushed Tamiya motors from back in the day. Anyway great info and always good fun with you two. Seemed like quite a wild day you went out. Tell you what a receiver with a gyro makes speed runs much easier. They don't come with wibbly wobblies I'm afraid ☹️ Best wishes for the weekend mate 😁
Hi Pete! Hope you are doing well my mate. Yeah, I thought this would go down well, I know others have done something similar but wanted to find out for myself. Wish I hadn't wasted my money on the Cup Machine, though! But at least it's a good warning to other folk. You are right about these can motors wearing out, and they are not designed to be rebuilt. Brushless (even "mild" ones) are a better bet if you do lots of running. But I guessed that most folk would just bolt in a Tamiya hop-up brushed and be done with it. Yeah, the weather wasn't playing ball, we nearly got blown away and it was affecting the car on the straight. That's the trouble with our hobby at this time of year! Oh, you've probably noticed that I've gone all modern recently, even using a steering wheel radio in this one! A gyro would be an advantage for sure. Anyway mate, thanks as always and enjoy your Sunday evening! :))
As for the GPS speed meter, it's a Hyper-Go HG-T22 Smart Radio System. The GPS unit connects to the Radio receiver in the car and the transmitter connects by Bluetooth to the app on your phone. There is a code with the radio system that you scan with your phone to download the app. The only place I can find it for sale is on AliExpress, a google search should find it for you! Cheers!👍
No problem my good friend, it was a fun test to do, wish I hadn't wasted my money on the Carson motor though! Yeah, the Sport Tuned is a good buy! Cheers, mate! 👍
Hi mark great video nice to see (watch:)) you again, I find that that a cheap alternative for higher speeds is an FTX 550 can motor works very well. it is very well priced coming in at £9.50 and with a bit of modifying the chassis can be fitted to a TT02 or a TT01. because of the large amount of torque it has you can gear it up and I have managed to get a TT01 up to bout 23-24mph with it. Hope everything is good with you and all the best my friend:)
Hello my friend, great to read you! Thanks for the motor tip, I've written it down! Sounds cool! Good speed from that in a TT01. All good mate, hey why don't you pop over and enter my Xmas giveaway, not too many entries, you might win! Cheers!
Hi there my favourite dynamic duo! What a great real world bench test. Back in the warmth, seems that the Tamiya Torque tuned seems better value for money, cup machine looks like it’s going to become a paper weight!😂😂. Great test fellas, Sport Tuned I feels is a bit disappointing for the money. Awesome work. Take care and best wishes to you all 😁😊😉
🤣 Paperweight!!! Classic mate, you always come out with some crackers! But yeah, good assessment of the tests. Value for money is definitely the torque tuned 👌 but if money is not an issue then go for the sport tuned 😉 All the best my friend and take care 👍 😀
And i got 3 cup machines at home 😅 but older ones (someone said they were better than the new gen), they were fast enough in my m02. In the tamiya cup here we're allowed the carson cup machine or the 17.5 turn tblm brushless motor... i think i the brushless motor then 😄
Hi there and thanks for the comment! i really hope the older motor are better, fingers crossed for you, dude! I'm hearing that the Cup motors were designed for the M-chassis so maybe that's the problem with mine in a TT02! Haha, yeah, I'd go with the TBLM, too! 😂
Yeah, the TBLM is very expensive, but I have the 15.5T TBLM in my Sand Viper DT-02 and it's been fantastic, still going strong 5 years later! I think you will need to gear up quite a bit though, these TBLM's don't spin too fast but have plenty of pulling power!
@@MarkBryanRC as it's a racing class gearing is regulated. So max final ratio will be 5.72. As long as everybody is driving the same speed and chassis it will be a fair race.
Haha! Wouldn't that be cool, Del?!?! I wish some of the bigger companies would watch some of the content created by us smaller channels, we might actually get some changes if that were the case! All the best, mate! :))
@@MarkBryanRC You'd have thought they'd realise that doing just that would be a fantastically cost effective way to receive customer feedback, but they don't seem to bother.
Love that you two are putting up RC videos. At 53, it warms my heart that dudes older than me are having a ball fiddling about with their RC cars.
Hi there and thanks so much for the message! Oh yeah, you are never too old to have fun! Both Rob and I will be 60 this year, so we will be proper "old gits"!!! Take care! :O)

Very true! My brain refuses to grow up! Thanks, dude! :))
53? That's not that old bro! Take it easy!
"that's pants" "what a load of pants"
I'm American, that's hilarious.
🤣 Hi there! Haha, oh yes it's funny how everyday words mean different things across the pond! Glad you found it funny! Cheers! 😜👍
Love the 4th wall breaking dialogues, makes me smile.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the dialogues, thanks very much for commenting, it's much appreciated here!
Probably fakes, if you look in air vent and it has a fan it’s fake
I laughed pretty good at Rob's back screw comment... Great review! If only I could have a mate like Rob...
Great video Mark! Really helpful and fun. And yes, I too wish I had a mate like Rob!!! Good on you both!
Many thanks, Jon! I'm glad you enjoyed the fun in the video, I'd hoped it would come across, that's what RC is about for us.
Oh yes, everyone should have a mate like Rob! 😂
All the best to you, wishing you a great weekend!
Thats my experience as well. Cheap motors usually perform way worse than the Tamiya motors. There are exceptions but Tamiya is the brand I trust when it comes to brushed motors.
Very true, basically you usually get what you pay for and cheap price = cheap quality. Yes, Tamiya is almost always quality gear!
You guys always put me in a good mood
Great to hear! Many thanks for watching and leaving a kind comment! :))
I have an old trinity p2k2 that I have tacken good care of and it rips in my tc3
Hi Michael, yes I've heard good things about those old Trinity motors! 😎👍
Good information Mark I have had a Carson rc before but didn't know they made 540 motors
Hi Brent, always great to read you my friend! Hope all is well with you 🙏. Thanks for the comment, yeah, apparently Carson do make 540 motors, thing is, we need to avoid them! 🤣 All the best, dude! 😁 👊👍
Hit the nail on the head with that video , great info and comparison guys , top job snd saving people money as well ;)
Thanks Andy!
Massive thumbs up for the old Beatties bag! I’ve still got mine for my TA01 cossie

Great video Mark. Looks like winter is kicking in over there !!!!!
Thanks, Ian! Yep, Winter sure is kicking in. It's been quite mild until recently, but the temps have plummeted this week!
Cheers 🍻
Great comparison video fellas..
Thanks a ton, Thad! Have a great weekend there!👍
I bought a few Torque Tuned motors a while ago since I assumed they were good value for money, based on nothing really other than that the TT-02S is equipped with it so it should be an upgrade over a silver can.

Great fun vid. Love the old school Beaties bag
Thanks! Classic Beatties Deal Bundle bag, I got a couple! Cheers! 🍺😎👍
Hi Mark, mainly go for a torque tuned motor for buggys like grasshopper-hornet
Bit move up to dirt tuned which is more but hundreds better for upgrades
Same here, Pete - mainly due to cost. I have so many cars that I couldn't afford to fit the decent Tamiya motors with replaceable brushes (wish I could!) but for the money the TT motor is a good choice! Cheers! 👌👍
I always liked the sport tuned. What are you using to get the MPH on your phone?
The little core rc motors are worth a try… Im running a 15t one in lunchbox and it’s up to 21mph 🏆😊
Hey, what a coincidence! I also have the Core RC 15T in my green Lunchbox, and got exactly 21mph on my speed test! Cheers! :))
Hi and thanks. How do I use the hyper wheels app with Tamiya? What BT component do you put on the Tamiya car? 10x!
Great performance comparison! I choose torque because you can run a bigger pinion with less heat build up over the sport tuned
Hi Rex! Great choice, brother, thanks for the insight, good information to share! :))
Hi there! The answer is YES! Your Hobbywing ESC will definitely be fine with that Sport Tuned Motor!
Excellent, il go for that then. One more question as I’m here , the rims 🛞 on this Tamiya Neo Fighter DT 03 are the worst I’ve seen in my life , I need to upgrade them , however they seem very difficult to get hold of, any ideas 💡??

Thanks, Col! Yeah, you got that right, for some reason the servo wasn't centering properly! Damn TT02 steering is it's weak point!
@@MarkBryanRC I thought you might of had the absima motor on test mark ,is that much quicker than the torque tuned one's?
@@col72 Hi Col, I did think about it, but it's 21T max, I have one, it isn't rated for Tamiya ESC's. But yeah, it is faster, I got 21mph in a stock TT02 when I tested one, so 2mph faster than Torque Tuned!
@@MarkBryanRC ah ok cheers
Torque Tuned is my ‘go to’ motor for most of my vintage Tamiya’s, I find it’s just right and like you say cheaper than the Sport Tuned. I have one of those Carson Cup Machines, it’s ok but not as fast as the Tamiya’s own motors like you demonstrated
Hiya Martin! Same here, I think the Torque Tuned motor hits the "sweet spot" between price and performance. Glad to hear that it wasn't just me getting something wrong with the Carson motor, it really is underwhelming compared to the other two! Cheers! :)

Hi Peter, glad you found it interesting, my friend! I think you can't go wrong with a Torque Tuned in terms of value for money. The Absima Eco Thrust is also a good budget hop-up. Take care, mate! :))
I did the same test (on a dt03) and got to the same conclusion. Keeping the cup machine because it has a nice sticker, but that’s the only reason 😂

Hey you both. Thanks for the testing. I'm still a fan of the Sport Tuned because it works on big-wheelers very well, too.
Maybe I can help you with the specs of the Carson and hopefully I had done the right translation:
- nominal voltage 6 V
- voltage range: 4,8 - 8,4 V
- rpm at best effeciency (60,1 %) 28.000
- nominal rpm 16.400
- torque 1,69 Ncm
- amperage 8,7 A
- power 28,8 W
Carson is like Aldi. Cheap parts but also a 50/50 chance of getting a bad upgrade.
Hi Dirk and many thanks for that info, very useful indeed! You did a great translation!
Oh yes, I understand the Aldi reference perfectly! Cheers! :))
@@MarkBryanRC we were there a few hours ago🤣. Some things are really tasty and for some things you noticed the b-production. But if you have the experiences you can really lower the monthly costs. Same for Carson, I thing it's always a question who produces for them. They are just a distributor.🤔
BTW I searched some forums here about this motor, noones really happy about it.

I have allways wondered the difference between the "can" motors by tamiya, because in my experience a kit that comes with a sport or torque tuned motor isn't labeled like they are if bought separately. and they can be confused with plain ol silver can motors. thanks for the information 👍
Hi John and many thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated! Glad you found it informative, all the best from Mark... :))
Another great video my friend. Some serious revelations for sure. lol Thanks for sharing brother.
Glad you enjoyed it my friend! Well, the Cup motor was a revelation for all the wrong reasons! 😂 Take care, bro!
Thanks Mark, think I'll stick with sport tuned as it's running a mesc lol 👍👍the resistor was getting a little hot 🔥

Hi! I think the Sport Tuned because it has the most torque and the highest revs. As an alternative, look at the Absima Eco-Thrust range, 21T, 18T and 15T all at about £10, absolute bargains!
@@MarkBryanRC great tips thank you for the advice, and awesome videos 😉😎
You are always welcome! 😎👊👍
Would like to see how the 15T HPI Firebolt compares on a £ for £ basis
Thanks for the feedback - I have a Core RC 15T that performs very well, trouble is you need to change the Tamiya ESC to use it. I'll see what I can do in the future to compare more brushed motors. All the best from Mark... :)
Is that cup machine running backwardsbor something? That was shocking
We just tried the Sport Tuned and it seems to be a bit faster, but also has heat problems on longer runs. I guess, you cannot have it all 😅
Oh yes, that's common with the Sport Tuned - to get the best out of it try dropping down a tooth or two on the pinion gear. Should have fantastic acceleration and less overheating! 😎👍
Hello, thanks for the video, can I put a 19T gear on the torque tuned or can something happen to the engine?
Regards from Chile!
Hello Javier from Chile! Yes you can fit a 19T pinion gear on the Torque Tuned motor, it should be fine!
Best regards from Mark in the UK!
I bit the bullet and got the sport tuned, makes the holiday buggy wheelie 😁👍
Hi Derek, great choice for the buggy my friend, we all love a few wheelies!!! :))
Hi what make is the reciever and where you buy the fone holder from
Great video just what I was looking for 👍 can you do 1 on battery upgrades if u can please 👍
Thanks, Carl, glad you found it useful! I'll see what I can come up with about batteries! Cheers! :)
Cheers!👍
@@MarkBryanRC thank you!
Good vid eo Mark well done guys Mark an rob👍
Thanks a ton, Keith! Have a great weekend there!👍
That's really good info, Mark!
@@MarkBryanRC
Mark, there is or was actually a place in UK that sells Holmes stuff. but last I checked, they didn't have the Retro Sport series, and now recently I read on Facebook, someone told it's no longer possible to buy Holmes from there, sadly...
@@madsrcbuggy Thanks for letting me know, Mads! Too bad for us Brits! 😒🇬🇧
Careful with the back-screwing.
Definitely!!! 😂😂😂 Cheers, Andy!
Is there any way to prevent it from zig zagging all the time?
Yeah, there was a lot of zig zagging going on! I think i was trying too hard in front of the camera, either that or we need a better driver! 🤣😁👍
@@MarkBryanRC I’ve seen there’s adjustable parts that let you change the tow angle, do you think if the front wheels angled inward a little that it might drive straighter or more stable?
@@zokusharuuku1091 Good point! On my other TT02's I have fitted the adjustable steering tie-rods, and yes, the car is more stable with a little "toe-in"!
I have two tamiyas and one came with a sport tuned tt-02D and a lunchbox where I thought about torque or sport tuned. Here I also got the sport tuned... Because I have money 😅 that was a joke.
Haha, I actually liked your joke! But it is true, if money is not an issue, we would all buy the Spot Tuned, because it's a better motor all-round! Cheers! :)
Hey! Great video! What gear ratio were you using? Stock gearing?
Hi and thanks very much 😀 👍 Yep, both cars were on stock gearing! 👍
Alright! Thanks for the information!
Cheers!
Have a look at the core Rc 21 turn motor about 13 quid it’s great 👍

Cup machine doesn't like 4wd. It works ok on 2WD but it still has the heat issues, heat affects the magnets because it confuses and misaligns the magnetic domains, causing magnetism to decrease.
Yes, the magnets are pretty weak.
Hi Kalle, that's great information my friend - Thanks! I might save the Cup Machine from the bin, after all! I have a couple of M-Chassis I could try it in. Cheers! :))

Is that 2s battery?
Yes Mohammad, it's a 2S LiPo. 😎👍
@@MarkBryanRC how if use 3s battery, how many the rpm can increase?
@@mohammadhanafi8524 With a 3S battery you have 50% more volts, so theoretically you should get 50% more RPM. So the Sport Tuned should then spin at 27,000 RPM!!! 😎👍
@@MarkBryanRC yeah i think it can broke my head, thanks Mark
@@mohammadhanafi8524 Haha! Cool, no worries pal!
Good test!!
Thank you! Cheers! :))
Way too fast Pete👎🏼👎🏼 😄
🤣🤣🤣
What about the GT tuned and Super Stock?
Oh yeah good point, I think I'll do a separate video for those motors as they are in a different price zone! Thanks! 😎👍
How did you measure the speed? What app and equipment is needed?
As for the GPS speed meter, it's a Hyper-Go HG-T22 Smart Radio System. The GPS unit connects to the Radio receiver in the car and the transmitter connects by Bluetooth to the app on your phone. There is a code with the radio system that you scan with your phone to download the app. The only place I can find it for sale is on AliExpress, a google search should find it for you! Cheers!👍
@@MarkBryanRC cheers, you've helped me twice this week.. 👍🏻
Do you have the dimensions and weight of the torque tuned motor?
Sure - it's about 50mm long and 35mm in diameter and weighs about 175 grams. I hope this helps! 😎👍
@@MarkBryanRC Thank you
You are always welcome! 😎👌👍
Very useful mate . Might try a sport tuned 👍 good information mate 😊👍

Excellent video Mark. Very useful information 🙂👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks my good friend! We had a blast making this as usual, last of the outdoor videos for a while as the weather is changing! Take care, Derek! 👍
Did you use a freshly charged battery for every different motor?
No. I used the same 4500mAh LiPo, but as the runs were so short there was no voltage drop-off. I did check with a LiPo meter to make sure. Cheers! 😎👍
@@MarkBryanRC this is the TT02 pro class. So i will definitenely get the tblm02 motor. Even if it's really expensive for what it is.
@@TheBrodir Ahh, that makes a lot of sense! I'm sure that ratio is a lot lower than stock, so it should be perfect for the TBLM!
