Doesn't matter what product it is, buying counterfeit goods simply means supporting/feeding counterfeiting. ;)
Fun fact: I have a Sport Tuned „made in China” bought in and owned since the 1990s! It’s rotor has the same colour as the one you show but no vent blades. For 25 years I wondered why my silver cans were at least as fast as it😂
I have another one bought at the same local shop back in the days. Have to check if it’s a China model too.
Good video, thanks
I'm currently building a tt02sr. I saw a china seller selling it for 1/2 the price online. Fortunate for me your video popped up and saved me from being scammed. Tq sir.
You're Welcome
Thanks for the great content!
I've got one in my RC hoard. Didn't realize it was a fake; it was advertised as Genuine Tamiya.
I'll shop more carefully in the future!
No probs dude
I know this is an old video but Im getting back into Tamiya. My first kit in the 80s was the Clod Buster. Thank you for your review. Its very helpful. I just ordered Tt02 drift kit.
Thanks pal, got my old Astute out the loft and wanted to get it moving again but had no clue about the new tec 👍🇬🇧
The Astute is a classic… 😎👌
Great vid Pal. I stupidly bought one and it was a little faster than stock, but burnt out after a good 10 mins of flat out driving.
Yeah, this took some abuse, but it’s no different to a cheap stock 540
Nice.... Exactly what I was expecting.... Can't wait for part 2....!
Yes, I'm looking forward to running the 2 Genuine ones together
Wow good test. Nice to know. Maybe this is was a factor in why Tamiya chose to update the ST motor to silver to make all the fakes look out of date.
Could well be...
Nice one Phil, just goes to show that in general, you get what you pay for. Good to show how much faster the proper Sport Tuned motors spin - my TT-02D with the Sport Tuned goes about 4mph faster than a TT-02 with the standard can - so the difference in revs definitely pays off in practice! It'll be interesting to see what your motors do in the next test. All the best, mate! :)
Thanks Mark. I really like doing these tests. Speed runs and motor upgrades is what really started my channel off...so its been nice getting back in to it. I secretly took the Capri out the front of the house on a 3s with the Genuine Black Can last night (without the body on)... very impressed!
@@TomleyRC Yeah, I'm sure lots of fans, including me, find these tests really interesting and useful - I bet that Black Can went well on 3s! :)
Would like to see a comparison video between a standard silver can, a sport tuned and a torque tuned motor. Nice work, dude!
Probably a good argument for it being a dressed up 27T.
I think if you want a cheap brushed motor though, you're better off with those cheap rebuildable ones anyway. They cost less than the fake and you can choose the wind you want.
YUP !! mentioned "Atomik" in my longish comment because they are pretty good bang for the buck end bell motors. really good motors with adjustable brush timing are usually about twice the price, but completely and easily rebuildable with whatever magnets armature and brushes you like.
Great video and great comparison. Good to see the difference as I know what little things to look for when buying a genuine tamiya sport tuned motor. I have a ton of those 'knock off' motors in my parts bin from several ebay lots I bought awhile ago. 1 thing I noticed with them (or at least from my experience) is when the knock off version gets pushed too hard that plastic fan just explodes inside the motor. Then again my motors might be a knock off of the knock off 😄😄
Well this one is certainly going to get pushed to destruction... I feel obliged to do so lol
Oh that was very interesting and a little bit nerdy. I love it! Just shows that you have to be careful what you buy. It's a shame that the official Tamiya Sport Tuned isn't black now. Look forward to seeing how the official ones do. The new speed widget does give the opportunity to really analyse the differences which is great. Nice one Phil 😁
Thanks Pete... yes, I was surprised when it arrived. The actual picture on the Japanese website was of the old black can. Testing them tomorrow hopefully
Fantastic comparison and test video, its so sad to see how small changes can easily catch people out
I've been in the Hobby since 1984..... This was ENLIGHTENING!! 😲
I know most Korean/Chinese Knockoff products are CRAP...
But that showed me a few things.
That Chinese "Sport Tuned" Motor has GOT to be a standard 27T - with maybe some Timing added...
(Test it in reverse, and see if it's slower)
I'm CERTAIN it wouldn't be as durable as the Johnson 540!
"Genuine" Tamiya Sport Tuned Motors have always been 23T. They have 12 degrees of Advanced Timing (hence the direction arrow), it WILL run slower in Reverse.
I reckon that the newer Silver Sport Tuned Motor has better quality Magnets than the original.
And I SURE wouldn't trust the Brush quality on the COPY!! 😲
Thanks! Great comparison.
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
Some good info there mate cheers. I am testing the 2 Genuine ones tomorrow. So might see if the copy will take a 3s!
Cheers! You should also reverse the polarity on all 3, and measure RPM.
The two Gennies should spin slower in Reverse if they both have advanced Timing...
I truly believe that the Clone will have no difference in speed, because it's simply a Painted, relabelled bog standard Silver Can Motor!!! 😲😖😠
That's what your initial testing revealed to me.
Look forward to seeing your results!! 👍👍
Another good video.
I'd watch that Jager even if it was running a WPL 130 motor...
Future video suggestion - silver can dry break in vs water break in. Then add some CRC 2.26 to the comm and see what it does ;)
I'm not sure water break ins are needed anymore... but would be worth a try. I have got 3 types of Silver Can from various yrs. Maybe worth putting them on the bench to test.
I appreciate your excellent review of these motors! You have no doubt saved many people from getting ripped off
Great video comparison Phil.
Now let's compare the MFA RX15+ with a Tamiya technigold motor.
That would be a good one
nice basic RPM bench test, another is a 1" arm on the output shaft to see how many inch lbs (or oz) the motor magnets offer in resistance to turning. free spin RPM means little if it runs out of torque under load, all it'll do is heat up more. on the other hand, for less than the price of a Tamiya motor, you can get all kinds of nice spec motors, like an Atomik 19d (19 turn double wound) with strong magnets, replaceable brush end bell etc. that's decently high rpm and strong on torque. good motor choice always depends on what type of vehicle you're powering, really high rpm with a much smaller pinion can give smooth response and great acceleration, same config with a larger pinion can heat up and drain a battery pack quicker... stuff you learn if you've done a few years of more serious RC racing, like a 4 minute race with your battery being spent at 5 minutes (1200mah Sony SCR NiCad days!), you were pretty close to being dialed in.
Yes, just a basic test...but functional. Certainly needs a test on the road(on load) to really test it.
That was great, top work! Also that Capri sounds as good as it looks, which is saying something... 👍😁
Thanks mate. I love that Capri!
In RC hobby, many parts are manufactured in China. The difference, however, is if those parts are produced in OFFICIAL factories or not.
That was a really good comparison, I have the black sport tuned motors and really like them . I bought a new silver sport tuned that I put in a shelf queen that I haven’t run yet . Looks like I might have to pull it out and use it .
Thanks Eric. Hoping to get the genuine ones out today for a side by side run
The fake certainly sounded faster . However it failed quickly on the old rpm test didn't it haha . Interesting video mate and always enjoy seeing that Capri in action 👍
I thought it was going to die after the first RPM test... but it surprisingly the following day it was good for a speed run
thanks for the heads up great mate
No worries mate
I just emailed a seller on ebay that I suspect their Sport Tuned motors are counterfeit I knew it!
It might be hard for you to imagine, but This is the First Video I watched from your channel, and this hooked me to subscribe!
Thanks mate. Appreciate the support 🙏
Another interesting video. Great work!
👍😎👍
Thank you
oh my. i recently bought that cheap sports tuned motor at $9 only. my gear ratio is 7:1. firstly after i got that motor, i calculate using rc speed calculator app, the standard silver can motor at 16300rpm using 8.4v can go 28.xx kmh. and for the sport tuned at 21000rpm using same 8.4v, the speed shows 36.xx kmh. after that, i also try speed run both motor, the gps show silver can motor speed 28kmh and my cheap sports tuned motor speed is 35kmh. my speed run results are nearly identical with result from the rc speed calculator apps. i dont know the exact rpm produced from both motor. but from the apps calculation and gps speed run results, the speed improved. i think my cheap sports tuned motor really produce 21000 rpm.
Nice perform mate👍 Thx for sharing🎥
Thanks mate
I got a counterfeit castle 5700kv off eBay it was actually a beast but didn't live long my new ones real huge difference in the two even though supposed to be same motor gotta love China and ebay
You gotta be careful where you buy from, lots of counterfeits about
Great video, very interesting. Looking forward to the genuine sport tuned motor test. 🤔
Thank you
I recently ordered one of those cheep Chinese Sport Tuned motors. I didn’t think anyone was going to do a comparison. I thought I’d have to do it myself. I wish that I would have seen your video before I ordered. Could have saved me some time and money. I use to get genuine Sport Tuned motors from Amazon for around $18 with free shipping a few years ago. Nowadays they are $24 + $3 shipping so I thought I’d shop around. Seems like the price has increased as of late. I’ll have to get one of those new silver ones. At least I stocked a couple of genuine black motors back when they were cheaper.
Yes, the price has certainly gone up recently. I think the Torque Tuned is still a reasonable price.
Never had a problem with mine had em in my boats and all
Great video!
I was wondering about these motors and almost bought one but was sus.
Good job exposing 👍
Another thing I'm curious about is the price difference of each motor! Great video!
Love these data style vids, really useful information
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Great video mate very interesting!
The fake is just a nicely dressed up basic silver can then! Looks nice though and could be ok for a display motor in shelf queens but l will be sticking to genuine tamiya gear😉👍
Yes if you can get it cheap enough, but it depends if you want to stay loyal to Tamiya!
@@TomleyRC Tamiya all the way man😉👍
Great stuff! Cheers.
What an interesting, thought-provoking and helpful video - thanks for doing this.
I think you did an excellent job of comparing these motors, and I loved the way you kept making motors magically appear and disappear in the summary. My favourite bit of clever editing was when you said "Don´t buy fakes - get the real thing" and the real thing´s box appeared beneath your hand just in time for you to place your hand on it : )
Thanks Del.... I'm all for a bit of smooth camera trickery lol. I like doing these tests, and although not everyones cup of tea, I know a lot of people out there are interested
@@TomleyRC You´re performing a public service here...frankly, I reckon you should be eligible for some sort of government grant : )
Yes...of at least £500k

Nice BRABUS ForFour in the background
What a great comparison review. Wish i had the time to set up a workshop like that......just off to check the 8 sport tuned motors i bought on ebay.....
Thanks for presentation / video. It reminds me of a purchase from China I did some years ago. I thought I bought a Futaba servo, but upon receipt I realized that it was not, the "Futaba" label had wrong colors as well as the mold / shape of the servo house was not correct. It did not work properly either...
Yes, so often we get 'scammed'.... todays video takes care of this motor once and fo all!
Genuine Sport Tuned u can buy at RC Mart for $ 15.90
Great test rig btw :)
Yes... if they have them in stock ;)
Very good info and very cool rig. Keep it up.
Thanks! 👍
This is why I watch your show bro I hate junk that isn’t the real product, copy it cheap is all they do, Grandpa said buy the best only cried 1 time,
Genuine sport tuned is literally 5 quid in Japan.
Fake sport has a plus, it has a fan inside.
But with most of my builds I try putting a heatshrink or fan to it.
Very interesting and will save us wasting cash on poor clones, without you spending the time for us I may have bought one of those and wasted my money, more videos like this would be great.
You're welcome. I like testing stuff..and I like helping others see what is good...and bad
Nice looking car, I had a Tamiya tt-01 Lamborghini with a big Clock sticker over the Bonnet, I found it irritating every time I turned the back did a 180. I no longer have it . But I do like the detail of their pre built body’s . I don’t have patience for stickers and spraying.
Yes, some good details, but I agree... stickers can be frustrating!
Tomley RC 🤯🤬🤬
Nice video 👍
Thanks 👍
Great way to do a review👍
Thank you
id be interested to see the genuine sport tuned vs the stock motor from a traxxas XL5 car
Bro i might be a bit late to this but Y tf do u not show the radio on the fake sport tuned rpm test??? bro that doesnt seem legit.
I love that capri body!
Great video thanks! I’ll be careful buying another sport tuned (or gt tuned) motor.
Great work to show us bro, amazing!! Very interesting, the fake could be the top dog?! Maybe, Let's see the next video bro! I'm really surprised about it! Now I must to think, who can brings me things to do better my hobby! Epic video! Have a great weekend bro!! Thanks for share..
Thanks dude. Not sure it'll be the top dog... the Genuine Sport Tuned are pretty fast!
Interesting, So safe to say the Chinese knock-off is a standard 540 wearing makeup. 😂. Thanks for sharing your detailed comparison. 👍
Yes lol...
So the knock off is a silver can painted black.... that would explain the little extra torque.. black is proven to add torque just like a metal ring around the can. Thank you for your video and time.
Thank you for the video. Great info
Awesome video you're a genius
I just ordered a sport tuned 370. Do you think that ebay is spamming us with fake ones of those as well? Great video BTW.
What a great vid. Thanks
I’ve just realized , these Motors aren’t what i was thinking of, Do you remember the Technigold ?
Yes, Technigold was a good motor back in the day!
Tomley RC I might have one in an old relic in my parents house loft . I’ll have to look for it.
@@mark-1rc502 did you find anything?
ツHarvmoid to be fair they are currently cupped up at home mother is a high risk category for the dreaded virus so we as in my family have kept our distance but I will look for it, I definitely have some old Tamiya cars , I’m sure I had this motor in my old escort mitchelin
@@mark-1rc502 covid is still on but did you find anything/look?
I think I probably have fake one. The box looks genuine but I think it's from the new silver can version. The magnets feel stronger than the standard silver can. And sounds like it revs higher by ear. It cost $40 AUD which is the same as a real one. 🤦🏻
Extra info: bought from a RC store from eBay.
Thank you for comparison test...
Awesome video
I run BZ superstock instead of sport tuned. Don't have to worry about copies.
Nice motor
Phil, on some of these they even mispelled the word rotation, they spelled it rontation. LOL!
what did it say in the news paper haha good vid
haha... it said 'Subscribe to Tomley RC'....
Also the front bearing size is smaller on the fake and has a different shaped housing
Its not smaller its just the can is different because its a johnson, real sport tuned is a mabuchi
@TomleyRC Today Ireceived a Torque Tuned motor from Tamico and it came on a plastic bag. No box, no boxart, no instructions. Made in China stamped on the side. Now I think it may be fake. But straight from Tamico???
I'd say it was genuine fro Tamico. Maybe they take it out the box to ship it easier
Yeah I agree mate I’d definitely say it was a fake one..
Certainly was!
Really interesting. The crafty so and so’s.. How many people have fallen into that trap??
Well hopefully not many more will!
Kinda wish the torque tuned was also compared to the sports tuned.
Also would like to see comparison of silver can and China Mabushi no-name motor. They claim 16,000rpm.
The one problem I have with my black sport tuned is that the brakes are absolutely awful
Thank you ❤
Great vid this nice one👌 when will you be speed running the sport tuned black and silver against each other? Be really intrested in that test as im thinking about getting the new silver sport tuned i have heard rumours they are a little quicker👍
Hopefully testing/recording tomorrow 👍🏻
@@TomleyRC nice 1 look forward to that👌👍
Black sports tuned has a timed 27turn motor that revs as hard as the silver 23t version forwards but is much slower in reverse
I always lube the bearing befor use and run them in for half an hour on very low voltage
What's the orange truck in the background?
FG Modellsport. New video coming soon
Why didn’t you show the controller in the video when you did the fake motor? Sounds like it wasn’t even at top speed yet 🤔
No reason...but I can assure you it was Full Throttle 😎
Awesome
My original 1980’s Hornet still has its original motor - do you think I would get any benefit from one of these ‘Sport’ tuned motors?
The black ones were used in the old days mate.
Wow pure garbage. I wish Tamiya was more readily available here in the US.
Thanks for this data, it's really good to see the difference.
The cheap one got an integrated fan which lack in the orginal MabushiTamiya's motor, and it can be good in some Rc car. And the Chinese can be upgraded with R2zz ball bearing
So basically you can upgrade the crappy one for the price close to a genuine one and still lack about 6k rpm ahhh no
u get that sexi scorpion going yet? i love kyoshos repro models theyre amazing your gonna love it (sorry not really relevent to this video tho)
Just waiting on paint. Motor and ESC are here ready to fit .
@@TomleyRC badass your gonna love it i had the regular repro scorpion and the 2014 scorpion beetle theyre so nastolgically awesome
so the Chinese copy has internal cooling fan whereas the original dc motor lacks one??? Do people know how cheap these fans are to install and how effective they are at extending motor life?
Thank you
for half the price its still a good deal, IF you dont care about top speed
Hi Phil. Im soooo confused. My Wraith Spawn stock motor is 21T, and 2-3 lipo capable esc.
My stock motor went bad, put in a legit Tamiya ( japan) Sport tuned RS540. Want to run 3s , but pkg. says input voltage max 8.4 volts..🤔.
So, stock oem says ok on 3s, but seems like tamiya limits battery voltage to 7.4 v or 2s battery.
I want to run 3s in it.
Traxxas sells 550 can shielded 21T motor which is 14.4 volts input voltage..😵💫.
Really confused.
I've seen this before, anyone else remember the fake sunysky motors for drones? If a "good" motor is cheap, its usually becuase its a counterfeit.
Thanks
No problem
You needed a bench power supply for RPM tests so the voltage will be 100% steady. I guess your test showed enough for showing the fake motor is about the same as stock.
I put a 540 12T one of these in my midnight pumpkin lowrider, it was black & idt i had that box
It stripped the gearbox. Im scared to put a big motor back in i don't want to strip gearbox again but i want more power
Was the thumbnail supposed to be a parody of that look at this graph meme? lol
What kinda ESC you using?
How much! For a 23t brushed..
Yes...£25! They used to be a fair bit cheaper
I've as much nostalgia for Tamiya as any forty-something, but I have no idea why you would by any of these 'hot' Tamiya 540's when any old cheap brushless with smoke them. Am I missing something other than nostalgia/authenticity?
The new Tamiya sport tuned motor is not good anymore as mine burnt out in a week of drifting
Would the new silver Sport Tuned be faster than the Johnson 540 that came stock with my Super Hornet? I found it faster than the stock Mabuchi 540.
