    My answer to the question: In general, NO! There ARE trucks built for it, but most are too low, too heavy, and just not geared well for the hardcore stuff! And sand, well, anything without balloon type tires is gonna struggle! But then again, every crackpot out there is gonna have their own answer, that is mine! If nothing else, you guys have a LOT of job security! Always gonna be people stuck out there! Awesome vid, as ever. Always good for a grin, a head shake, and a little education.

    • @matts.8342
      @matts.8342 3 года назад +15

      Yeah, pretty much my thought. Matt's Jeep wasn't really built for off road like this either, at least from the factory. He had to add a bunch of expensive parts, which is certainly something you could do to the trucks too.

    • @Databyter
      @Databyter 3 года назад +15

      Yea, tires tires tires. You gotta laugh at anybody that goes out in the sand with low profile, or in that area, even medium profile tires. You need high profile tires on smaller wheels, and you need to air them down. I know people that have 2 full sets of wheels and tires, smaller wheels with bigger tires for the dirt and sand, and larger lighter wheels with lower profile tires for commuting or road trips. If you life in a snow bound area you might need a third option, tall narrow snow tires. Databyter

      @@alifeneurotic. Conditions can change in the area rather quick for example the soil is clay which is great when it is dry, I mean is is like concrete, but when it is wet from rain or snow it is nightmare. The wet clay sticks up your tread making the tires like they are bald, "no traction." "I have been on level ground spinning my wheels not going anywhere." Roads can turn to sand which are like a golf course sand traps and the sand is very silky like powder which you can easily can dig in fast. I learned real quick not to slow down or stop in sandy areas. I have seen all kinds of vehicles stuck or even wrecked, including expensive Hummers. But like Matt I don't frown or cut anyone down because it can happen to just about anyone that is not familiar with the area, and even locals have gotten stuck, Again I have just been lucky.

      Yeah, momentum either gets you through, or it gets you in really deep. I almost got stuck in a sand pit once, with a trailer. Glad I didn't use momentum, because that allowed me to reverse out of there after just a few minutes of digging. The road was just three meters in front of me, but there was no way I could've gotten enough momentum to bridge those three meters while driving in the sand.

      @anonymous that's because you haven't driven one. They do well crawling and offroading but they're not meant for that specifically, they're meant for bashing around offroad at 60-70mph and flying over jumps. The only thing this guy really needed was a proper tire set up and his foot closer to the floor.

    • @LiquidFoxDesigns
      @LiquidFoxDesigns 2 года назад

      @anonymous ever driven one? They are very much a small scale trophy truck that's actually obtainable. No one said you could hit a 3 foot whoop at 100mph but you definitely can hit a 200 foot table top and fly though MX sized whoops like you're on clouds. These things are quite amazing for what they are.

    • @LiquidFoxDesigns
      @LiquidFoxDesigns 2 года назад +1

      @anonymous I wasn't commenting on full size pickups, they aren't really my thing for offroading and it annoys me how many people just tear up otherwise great trails with them. Just the capability of a sport UTV. Of which I've owned and raced a Rzr-S since 2013, then a turbo RZR, then a YXZ1000R-SS and last year added a 2021 RMAX4 to the stable. They've been amazing for what they are, it's no full size trophy truck but they're just about the perfect weapon for most high speed offroading.
      Raptors are cool for what they are too but not my thing, pickups are for towing the real toys imo, and purely super high HP builds are boring af. Not everything has to be a dick swinging competition though. Point is, the first guy that got stuck would have had a much better time with the right tires because what he was in is a perfectly capable rig, just with a likely inexperienced driver.

    built to sell not preform primarily off-road. I had a diesel to tow, built jeep to off-road along with a older Toyota pu for rock crawling.
    Now just an old V-8 Raptor which does what I need it to do. These new trucks look great on the highways.

    Hey Matt, I highly recommend using Evan's waterless coolant for your rigs!! Very low freezing point, and an almost 300 degree boiling point!! I run it in my SXS for racing, and under wide open throttle for hours at a time, its never gotten over 210 degrees.
    Very worth it!!
    You use the prep kit to flush the system, then use the waterless coolant. Without water, it also saves your cooling system from corrosion, and there's no water to boil and make excess pressure.

    I think that modern trucks are definitely capable of some off-roading with the correct modifications (skid plates, right tires, etc). But since the huge majority of the public buy this 4x4 monsters just to drive them on asphalt, you can’t really blame the companies if they tune the stock trucks to be better on roads than off-roading.
    In my country we have the L200 Triton by Mitsubishi, and it takes a lot of hate by people who just use it on roads due to it being more tuned for off-roading straight from the dealership. People don’t like the noise of the tires, the handling, the suspension, etc. But is the best option in the market(if you’re buying something brand new) if you’re thinking of buying it to build on top of it for off-roading.
    So I think it’s all about trade offs.

      In the case of the Power Wagon I disagree. It comes with skid plates, Front and Rear Lockers, a 12000 lbs. Warn winch, front disconnecting sway bar and 33 inch AT tires. TrailRecon has a video showing 37s will fit without a factory lift. And with a 6.4L gas motor and 4.10 gears it is not a truck I would use if driving a lot of road miles. I think your correct that many owners buy vehicles like this or the Wrangler Rubicon, Raptor, TRX etc. for their looks and they never see anything but pavement. But it's not because the manufactures didn't build it to go off-road.

      Both trucks are over heavy beasts for the sand yes. Especially that 3/4 ton Power wagon. IMO all they really needed was better tires on the Toyota and the knowledge that deflating to 16-20 psi would have gotten them through the sand much easier. Even in the side by side its the complete lack of experience in the sand that got them stuck. Heck I bet that side by side had overpressured tires too.

    for the banana, get a thick core aluminum radiator with a electric fan in the front and back (a pusher and a puller fan) Your heating issues will never happen again. And since you are in hot part of country that never see's anything under freezing. Put straight water in it. Also cut out the "guts" of the thermostat and just use the "frame" of the thermostat to help the water flow faster, but not to fast that it does not get a chance to cool off. Learned all this from Dirt Track racing years ago.

    My stock ZR2 does a good job off road. But it's a bit lighter and smaller than the trucks you guys yanked out. It also has front/rear lockers from the factory which is obviously a big help. And, of course, driver experience matters too. Picking the right lines and knowing when and when not to use your momentum takes some time to learn.

    Most full size truck drivers don't take them off road, they're mostly brodozers for the pavement with a few ranch trucks that see packed dirt or gravel. They're big, heavy, yet light on the ass. Committed off roaders have jeeps and off-road SUVs(full 4x4, lockers) plus mods.
    Brodozer guy with road tires that decides to tackle sand while crushing brews the night before with the homies is always trouble.

    It’s really unfortunate when I see most people go having fun at sand dunes with tires full of air. Just put 15 or 20 psi and the vehicle will float smoothly no matter what the conditions are. Also, most vehicles in the channel comes equipped with diff-lock or Axle lock and they didn’t use it when they’re stuck.
    Where I’m from in Saudi, people sometimes have fun at the sand dunes in a sedan vehicle 😂, even more difficult sand than the one in Hurricane. The secret is that they just loose some air from the tires.

    Add an electric fan to the radiator from the out side to help cooling and connect it to the airconditioning system so when the airconditioning is on the fan is on or make a separate switch... Look for a good branded fan like SEPAL, to solve the overheating issue; if you drive it will go away but if you stop for a while in hot sand it will come up, this is the simplest way. We do that in Dubai extreme Hot desert.

    Make a shroud with card board & packing tape then put Resin on it to make it stiff , cut apart , to use as a templet . From Front of radiator keep cardboard clearance all the way to inside of fan. All the way around the fan blade 1/2 to 3/4 inch .
    When building. Make bolting tabs for assembly bolting shroud together more the two . Take your time on cardboard fab, keep in mind radiator hose holes.
    When you make you custom radiator Fab , options A. Fiber Glass B. Use to form Steel shroud.
    What ever you build , on install close all air leaks around radiator
