All of these button trims have either fallen off, or are about to. These aren't bad machines, they're minimalist designed and reliable, sometimes that's enough, but they can also have that very pleasant Yamaha characteristic that many love. I hope it's at least mechanically sound for you.
These cosmetic repairs are looking interesting. Someone has to become creative to replace the cassette door cover and the power button. It can be used as a donor unit.
Kx2000 is also nice deck, have tried one - its very sounding one. Device looks how it looks, but i think after repair it will start to "sing" :) Good luck with this one. :) Cheers mate!
I recently repaired a yamaha kx-800, the younger (cheaper) brother to this deck, with a single capstan. It was in very bad shape, the capstan bearing fell off, because the plastic got cracked. Also another piece of plastic that turns the cam gear snapped. Somehow, with a lot of epoxy, the deck works perfectly. Looks like a bunch of gray plastic metled, when you look at the barebones mechanism. Also for some reason, it plays perfectly fine without the small belt that goes around the left reel hub, no idea why. (i guess it doesn't need one?)
The smaller belt would be for backtension - it should really be there. Not familiar with that model but if the transport is the same as this one it'll be a 3.2" internal circumference 1mm square belt. Wow, that's a lot of drama for one deck - glad you prevailed!
from personal experience, you know you have a problem when the deck you bought cos the one you really wanted isn't available, turns out to be a 'wrong un' just after the one you really wanted 'slips out of reach ! ! ! However, there are worse things to be obsessed about and let them take over your life !
