The control motor commonly dies in that mechanism. One of my friends was actually going to get a new motor built, but the minimum order quantity was 1,000 and he couldn't get enough people to pitch in.
I meant to say I have a Yamaha KX-393 which i absolutely love. I find the Yamaha decks in general have a lovely melow tone. Recently I've tried various Denon, Pioneer and Technics decks. All have gone back in the cupboard and the Yamaha has come back out.
Nice video! Regarding frequency sweeps i suggest to do that at -20dbm, because tapes actually are tested like this and also if you check the specifications of some decks manufacturers where they mentions deck tape types frequency responses they show that test they done are in -20dbm. Anyway when i saw that pb head damage... damn thats sad... Cheers mate!
Thanks! I'm not too sad - it's a brilliant recorder. I'm impressed enough that I recapped the power supply so I can keep recording with it. Good thing too - it was full of out of spec 10uF Elna caps and had three corroded jumper wires hiding under circuit glue. I'll get another one of these and make one nice deck. Maybe I'll see if I can convert it to direct drive too.
The head scratch looks to be far from the gap, it might be okay, I also see a groove forming in the guide, head is a bit high, check the travel maybe. I noticed your sweep was done at about -7db, high-end roll off is much greater there than at -20db, it's a shortcoming of slow moving tape. These are decent machines, it might worth a bit more aggravation.
I did do another sweep at 0dB and it looked about the same… I should have done the screenshot with that one. Path looked good with the checker tape as well… no tape curl. Maybe I’ll check again but the azimuth was way off and the adjustment is on the guide side so maybe that’s why it’s worn? Regardless, polishing the heads got a lot of treble back. Not sure how much yet but I’ll see if I can get another sweep done. I recorded a full tape on it yesterday while the video was uploading and it was noticeably better sounding than the demo recording.
I did another sweep to see what the polishing did - no change in the measurement, but it really does sound like it has more treble now. I wonder if there's something going on with the way the software is interfacing with the Steinberg UR22. Anyway, the tape it recorded sounds amazing on other decks so I'm still happy.
@@Oklawolf You will see significant role off at 0db, try it at -20db which is more realistic for cassette. Reel decks are flatter across amplitudes due mostly to the speed and wider tracks. There might also be some electronic issues especially since it's been tampered with. I'd also be curious to find the repro head's inductance values, maybe a clue there as well. Anyway, good work getting to where it is, I'll be interested to see the next installment.
I'll keep experimenting with things - I want to see how some of my other top decks measure now to see if it's the deck or something else. Otherwise I think I'm set on using this one for recording as it is now and then watching for another one in better shape I can restore to look good as well. This deck has a very pleasant and lovely sound to it... I think it's a world class machine in every way. Or was when it was new, anyway. I listened to its tape on the BX-150 this morning and kept thinking, "Oh, that's nice!!!"
Man I hate rubber parts in electronics. Always a problem. I did an experiment with installing direct drive motor into my deck (Sony with a Sankyo transport) made out from 3.5 inch floppy drive. Works great, but needs a capstan balancing to be perfect. And no more belts!
I invested in one of those small cheap cordless screwdriver's from Walmart, best investment yet! I have to charge it about every 3 months. It will shorten your dismantle/assembly time.
Had a same kind of issue with a Yamaha KX-340. I replaced the head and problem solved. Nothing to see on the low hour head. I don't have the head anymore to look under a microscope.
hi have a tascam 328 that is a right pain it only plays tapes ok now the servo i had to take out recap did not fix the deck some one's before me got in to the deck the motor runs ace now i put a old school motor in i had to clean a lot of juck out and make some new steal part to fix the motor to 4000 rpm motor with a big pulley and drive belt i reuse the fry wheel i put a belt around it to drive the deck it has a wide speed 2 ips to 7 1/2 ips not far of
Had the 1020U, what a spectacularly bad TOTL deck, had bias problems, left/right gain mismatch problems, transport issues, falling off button caps like yours. It is the worst deck I had and kind of glad that I let it go. Much happier with a Nakamichi 700II.

I was drunk inside 10 minutes! 😂😂
Yeah😅
Yeah …. Well, yeah me too - it’s hard to break bad habits.
In my defense, this is a Yeah-maha deck...

I’ve had good luck rebuilding them… this one seems to be happy now.
Very cool deck. This seems to be a sankyo mechanism. Similar to the nakamichi. Great content as always.

Hi, you've made great informative movies, I really enjoy to watch and listen your materials, thanks for that, keep it up. Cheers
@1:18:13 Music??
Always really enjoy watching your cassette deck videos, keep it up!!

Oh yes, I also thought about internal bias and eq controls, those need to be set before the externals.

I would say the "bacon belt" was a standard rubber band.

That's not a bad idea - this transport did have direct drive variants.

Sir, which company is the supplier of the drive belts .
PRB.
Thank you Sir, I am having DR 2 NAK DECK and this mechanism is a SANKYO type mechanism which is there in this Yamaha Deck also .
