There is one that's been sadly lost to history due to a Firmware update, but originally the Nintendo Switch had a hidden copy of NES Golf, one of Satoru Iwata's first games, that could only be played on the anniversary of Iwata's passing by taking the controllers on each hand and doing Iwata's signature Nintendo Direct pose.

Actually, it _can_ technically still be performed to this day. However, this requires you to mod the Switch console to prevent firmware updates in order to ensure it remains permanent. Regardless, the original model of the Nintendo Switch with absolutely no updates can still perform the tribute action if you can maintain the state of it from release.

I once read a story of a young man who dug up his old Sega Rally game to find his fathers last saved run. He had played the game with his dad for hours when he was young. A few years later his father had passed away but when he played that game he could drive along with his dads saved ghost car. He would drive along with his dad and at the last stretch slow down to let his dads car win since if he had beaten his dads time the data from his run would be erased.

One old tribute I remember is in League of Legends. The character Jax, when equipped with his "Jaximus" skin has a line that says "Here's to you kid". This is a tribute to Joe, a kid that suffered from Ewing's sarcoma and before his passing managed to visit Riot's hq through the "Make a Wish" foundation. Friend of mine and a clan leader in the Halo community "Age of Delta" passed away. By this time the clan had already disbanded but when we caught news we built a memorial in Halo Reach that doubled as a training base, on console with no mods. Not many of us were still around at that point but 5 of us showed including some friendly rivals showed up to talk about who he was as a person. Most of us cried n I'm still crying just typing this out now. Skyrim also added a follower character based on a fan who loved the Elder Scrolls series, but died from cancer before the game came out. You can find him in Rorikstead and do a small quest where you help convince his father to let him become an adventurer, and upon doing so, he becomes "Erik the Slayer," which is a reference to his online handle. A long time ago, a year or two before World of Warcraft first launched, my partner and I were playing Everquest. We belonged to a small guild of tight-knit people from around various parts of Canada and the USA. One member went by the name of Stahlburn. In EQ, it was common practice to call out "Hail " in the zone or world chat and get a reply from that player. One afternoon, we were playing with a few of our guildmates when Stahlburn logged in; except it wasn't him. It was his son, who logged in the character to let us, his guild mates, know that his father had died during surgery. I told the zone chat that our guild mate had died in real life and asked everyone to yell "Hail Stahlburn!" in his memory. The zone chat was filled with hails to him for nearly two minutes! Everquest had a game wide community that I've never seen in any other MMORPG.

We had a memorial in game for him and everyone in guild changed their last name to Followthebear. RIP Majouth.

In Final Fantasy 14, back in 2014 IIRC, there was a vigil for a player that died from renal failure. Most of the server gathered up outside his guild's house and spelled out his character name on a nearby beach (Codex). The vigil ended up extending to 3 other servers. Then, again, in 2020, another vigil was held for a player who died from complications related to COVID-19. Players from every server in the game joined in, and many sources say that it may have been the biggest player-made event in the history of the game.
MMORPG communities (or gaming communities in general) are much, much more friendly and close-knit than most people believe. Even across/between our respective games.

When the creator of the manga Berserk, Kentaro Miura passed away last year, they held a tribute to his passing in Final Fantasy 14 by equipping the Dark Knight job and using a Dark Knight specific stance, mimicking a stance and look often used by the manga's main character, in several of the game's major hub areas. In some places, they added small bonfires for additional impact and, at least on the server I played on, it was attended by hundreds of players. There was long line of players that stood vigil to mourn his passing not for hours, but for days. Literal days.
I'm not personally familiar with the manga, but the fact that players chose to maintain the vigil for as long as they did means he must have touched a great many lives. Though I am not familiar with the manga, I was very impressed by their devotion. Truth be told, I was convinced they would grow bored of it after a few hours and move on. I was proven very wrong and that can only be a good thing. He must have been one heck of an artist.

Dont chase after (suspected) robbers. Dont try to be a hero. I used to work at 7/11 where theres a robbery at one of the outlets every single day. I was coming home from giving a statement at the nearest police station and saw the exact motorbike used. It was actually one of the robbers, I followed them around trying to snap a pic to send to the cops. I fumbled and they became suspicious because I came too close. Ended with a chase (they were on 2 bikes with machete, I was solo). Took a sharp corner and my motorbike hit the divider. There were people at a bus stop near by so they bounced. I ended up bruised and bleeding (minor) and had to pay for the bike repair out of my own pocket. The number plate I gave to the cops turn out to be fake which is pretty obvious but in the heat of the moment it didnt occur to me that that would be the case. Unless its a life or death situation, dont try to be a hero.

I used to play a game called Air Attack, a WW2 fighter plane game developed in the mid 90's, the graphics obviously wasnt amazing but they were good enough. There were many players and many squads/teams and we had allsorts of ages playing, young and old, and from every continent, we had allsorts of players. Quite a few of the older Americans, and i mean like 60 years old, used to be pilots when they were younger and had so much fun playing Air Attack, it was a great community to be a part of.
Unfortunatly one of the older guys who played regularly suddenly died of cancer, we were all so sad to not see him in the skies anymore, another player knew him closely and was in touch with the family. We all said our goodbye with the help of his son, who logged in one final time on his account. Every active player was on that day, we all went into a lobby and sat on the runways, engines off and then suddenly he logs in, with 2 other planes. The son was flying the lead plane with his 2 best friends (who did play the game) his wingmen and flew over us all as we all said goodbye. Then as they flew away the 2 wingmen peeled off, as he continued on, and out of view forever.
It was a really sad time but it was amazing to be a part of such a caring and loving community for so many years.
This really brought it back for me, great video bro, as always.

Really up there on a personal list is Mount Satori and The Lord of the Mountain in Zelda: BotW.
A standing tribute to Satoru Iwata after his passing in 2015, shortly before the game came out, the location is not just beautiful to look at, it's also a wealth of resources from across the whole of Hyrule. Plus, the description of the creature you can find there says that it is "a reincarnated sage that looks after all the creatures of the forest". Likely a reference to how Iwata personally poured so much of himself into Nintendo during his tenure.

His favorite Pokemon was the "Baby Fire Lizard" which I had to tell him was Charmander. Well, he had one and when I transferred it over, it became Lucky. I bawled like a baby when I saw it and named it "Dad's Fav". It's still in my game and I will not do anything with it other than level it up to be the strongest little guy ever. When he was killed in the Benghazi attack, the players of EVE lit cynos all over null sec to make the map be a glowing ball when looked at with certain filters on. A large chunk of the player owned stations in null sec were renamed "R.I.P. Vile Rat" or something similar to honor him. And there was some using interdiction bubbles to spell out "R.I.P. Vile Rat". In the Command Centre section of Lijang Tower where there's a space suit with the name tag "Hongyu Wu" and the subtitle "Heroes Never Die", a nod to a fan of the game who had passed after getting into an accident while chasing down a thief.
And in the first attacker's spawn on the map Eichenwalde (which takes place in Germany) has a candle and a little grafitti with a love heart, an I, a D, and an H alongside. This is a tribute to German player Dennis Hawelka, aka INTERNETHULK, who had tragically passed away due to heart disease. I have two game tributes (technically 3) to share, involving friends of mine.
    1) In Jan 2016, Halo player and youtuber TheCrazedSpartan (Adam Bartel), was working night shift at his job. As was his wife with her job. Their two teenage daughters were sleeping at home when a electrical fire broke and trapped the girls upstairs. It hurts to talk about this, so I'll leave it to you to look up the details.
Adam often played Halo with his daughters and create custom maps. Within a year of the tragedy, 343 Industries honored the girls with a in game Halo5 nameplate and a easter egg in a new Forge map that mirrored the nameplate. In both the map and the name plate, Trinity & Lena's initials appear in the stars.
Adam and his wife, Rebecca, are eternally grateful for the tributes, and support from the community. Adam's channel is still active, but his drive to make videos has all but fizzled out. Adam and Rebecca list literally everything that day. Only a few family videos that he uploaded survived. Adam still plays Halo, but he's been very reserved. He and his wife have taken up crafts as a new hobby and business.

    • @sespider
      @sespider 2 года назад +17

      2) The second tribute is for Lee Auter. Best known online as IceyCat25, Lee was a commentator and tutorial creator for the Ubisoft game, Rainbow 6 Siege. Lee was one of the pre-release testers for the game, and became a huge feedback influence on how it handled. After release, Lee started his Siege series and blew up in popularity for his insights and love of the game. In 2020, Lee started a Reddit based podcast (Rainbow Six Radio) with close friends. I didn't know Lee as well as I had hoped. I mostly spoke to him via chats, messages, comments, and during games. Lee was a awesome guy that never seemed to get angry about anything.
And so it became a complete shock to most of us when we learned Lee committed suicide. We (myself included) had just gamed with him the night before. Even helping him test game mechanics for a upcoming video of his.
As I said, I wasn't close to Lee as I wish I was. And as such our discussions were mostly about the game. I had no way of knowing how deep Lee's depression was. All I knew at the time was that lockdowns had cost him his job. And that he didn't seem to want to discuss it but focus on the game. Apparently, there was a lot more to his depression then the lost of a job. Lockdowns had just started, and so being confined couldn't have been it. I'm not going to dishonor Lee by speculating. I understand depression all too well, and it effects folks many different ways. Lee left behind his wife and 3 beautiful young children. His son oftened played Siege with Lee. I still see him play it every now and then.
To honor Lee, Ubisoft added his RUclips channel's mascot logo as a free charm in the game. To me, personally, I see it as a insult as Lee was very vocal about how little he cared about charms. Instead, they should have added Lee's mascot as a set piece on a map. Especially since Lee often worked out solutions to rework classic maps. Ideads and suggestions that Ubisoft used without credit. For Examlple: In 2019, Lee reworked the map House, and used his editing skills to demonstrate these channels in video form. Most of those changes were added to the actual rework of the map, just a month before Lee's suicide. And no, I do not believe that was a factor.

Years ago I played a game on facebook, I honestly cannot remember whether it was War Commander or Thunder Run, both games are practically identical and it was basically a war game where people formed clans and you could jump to different maps and battle each other. On one of the maps there was a single base completely surrounded by war units of his clan and others, the player had passed away and all the people on the map were showing their respect and protecting the base from attack.
Another story I have was one I wish i could have done more, but I ran a clan and one of my members disappeared, I tried contacting him many times because he was a good guy, after months of no contact, i discovered he had committed suicide and I had talked to him many times both in a clan chat and private chat and knew he was having issues, physical as well as having lost his wife and he was only 30. There was little I could do but I went to the page of his home island and just raised a glass (an emoji) in his honor.
One thing about gamers of all kinds, from the simple phone or fb games to large mmp games is that the majority are good people and you can make friends practically anywhere and from anywhere in the world. I learned more about cultures and countries from online gaming than school could ever teach. Gaming community can get a bad rep, but those are the minority of players, not the majority.

one tribute from fans I like the share, (it happen in 2020 so a year after this video came out) Rick May, the voice actor of soldier in team fortress 2. passed from a stroke and related complications of covid, fans joined together ingame- in a session they all chose to play soldier but instead of playing the round shooting each other, both red and blue soldiers gathered in the middle of the map and may respect and honor him.

City of Heroes: Homecoming added Ascendant as an NPC in Steel Canyon near Positron. Anyone that played on the Virtue server on live knew him from him standing around using the phone emote and talking to his agent Sal. Even the devs knew about this and shared the latest one they saw him do.

My friend Matt was a huge contributor in the community to City of Heroes during it's Beta and development, playtesting and actively engaging with the developers. Sadly, he lost his battle with depression and took his own life. After CoH launched, I played it and found one of the first characters everyone meets in the tutorial was replaced with his character as a tribute, Kiyotee. The first time I saw him in the game, it surprised and moved me beyond words. Kudos to the CoH development team for their tribute.

And besides Ascendent the game now has included tribute NPCs to players who have died. I believe all the ones who are "Paragon Heroes" faction are characters of players who have passed on. @Brigg made a video showcasing all this "Community Players" who replaced the comic hero cosplayers in his infamous fire farms. One of the folks who submitted her character to be included in the fire farm had since passed away from COVID, and so he dedicated the video to her memory. You can find the video by searching "Brigg CoH".

the minecraft one made me cry so hard because i can relate to it... loosing someone you share a deep love and a mutual hobby with is always brutal because not only you loose the person to lean on, no you also loose most of your hobby as you used to share it with this precious soul and it will never be like before. you will always think of her/miss her while you desperately try to indulge in whatever made you happy once..

Elite Dangerous by Frontier Development has a Pilots Memorial where people are remembered. It says: "Remembering those lost to us in life, in the knowledge they will live forever amongst the stars". It didn't have to be a commander in the game, it could could be anybody. I requested the names of both my parents to be up there, and Frontier kept their word, and they were included in the game. Many people are mentioned. When you visit the Pilots' Memorial in Sol or in Colonia, it's very emotional to see the names up there. Hat tip to Frontier Dev.

Still two more of them are that, before their passings, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson had their voices recorded for narrating certain quests as dungeon masters in Dungeons and Dragons Online. Moreover, in that game, shrines to each of them can be found in Delera's Graveyard and The Ruins of Threnal, respectively. Also, another one that is not mentioned is the passing of someone who was named Joshua, a.k.a., TheSquashPhD, in Destiny. Finally, in Final Fantasy XIV, a person that had led the Gilgamesh server, namely, Codex Vahlda, had died of renal failure in real life, and a ton of tributes poured into the fallen player. Sadly, Square Enix themselves did not do anything to commemorate the passing of that person, though.

It's become a sad custom for me to have in game mail saved from people who passed away. One game I have a mail from 10 years ago still sitting there as a memorial to someone who passed shortly after I got it. I can't delete something they wrote to me, just saying oh, hi! and that they were looking forward to bumping into me in the new game. Same thing with friend lists. Those names stay when cleaning them up. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. There's little memorials all over games like that, that are personal, not seen by anyone but one person. The tribute is in never forgetting them.
