Imagine spending nearly 2K for some basic sheet metal parts, off the shelf electronics, and have to fully assemble the whole thing yourself. The profit margins on these things must be incredible! I'm guessing upwards 75%!

What's the function of the air-stones + air-pump?
To aerate the water -Helps with nutrient delivery and prevention of root rot
@Kooper is correct. In addition the aeration also helps keep water temperatures low which discourages algae and diseases. It is always a good idea to keep the water temperature a minimum of a few degrees cooler than the air. The aeration increases DO (dissolved oxygen) which encourages healthier and more abundant root growth as well as root respiration (believe it or not, roots breath just like leaves do).
