Progressive metal is right. Try introducing people to this in 96-99 I was considered odd for my tastes back then but had people that introduced me to Crimson, Hawkwind, Van der Graff Generator etc. in my early teens I always looked for someone more experimental then the last thing I listen to. Opeth was one of those bands that caught my radar early and I still listen to them today. Being mostly self taught is the heard in the his composition of songs.
Yes... this is progressive metal at it's best... Opeth is tops. Lead singer is the main songwriter, and he could be a stand up comic as well. His between song banter is sort of legendary.
I agree, the only guy I can think of who is as funny on stage is Devin Townsend. They played some shows together probably worth the price of admission just for the between songs comedy.
Welcome to Prog Metal my friend! If you wanna check more Opeth, I would suggest Ghost of Perdition as something similar from same album. Also another epic, Blackwater Park!

Opeth are up there with rush as my two favorite bands.
They can be heavy as hell , especially thier earlier recordings or very progressive in their later works.
A suggestion being,masters apprentices or the devils orchard.

Meet Micke a couple of times becuase he is friend of Jonas Renske (singer of Katatonia) which is the cousin of a former friend of mine. And I saw Opeth live once. The first 4 albums are great! I also heard that Micke doesent growl anymore. True? Good request Dan!
yeah he hasn't growled since watershed. and tbh. the new prog albums have grown on me and i wouldn't have it any other way. he did the right decision with the change of direction.

Opeth is the shit.
opeth definitely in general is not exactly what i'd call heavy. although they have a few really heavy songs. Serenity Painted Death, Blacwater Park, Demon of The fall, Heir Apparent, The Grand Conjuration, Sorceress, Deliverance, Wreath are some of their heavier songs
