Always love to see more self-taught people make it in tech!
I coded for 3 years determined to make a career out of it. I eventually went into iOS development. I was able to get an app on the App Store but unfortunately it didn’t do so hot. I got disillusioned and my day job kept me busy so I didn’t code for awhile. But recently I reevaluated my path in coding and decided to go back and learn web development. To anyone out there reading this I would say pursue your passion and never give up. Work hard and make it happen!
love this motivation :)
Nice job! I’m also a self-taught web developer. I started my first job back in June. Personally, I used a Gatsby template for my portfolio and changed it up a bit.
That makes 2 of us :)
Do you have any advice for someone looking for their first gig? if you wanna check out my portfolio and maybe throw me some recommendations?
what projects you recommend as a beginner
I'm a self taught programmer and I'm still learning. It's true. The best way to learnin through making your own project.
Hahaha. You know what? I was going to take my shower when I stumbled on your video. I am just here laughing and getting inspired. Love you man! I am fifty with four kids in the university. I decided to make a career change to tech and I have been digging html, css and JavaScript. . I bought a course on Udemy days ago and it is beautiful. The joy of taking up this challenge is beyond measure, knowing where you are going. I learned so much from you man. All the way from Lagos Nigeria. Keep your coming!!
You're definitely right about blogging, even just writing it down, or just talking to someone about it. The knowledge really sinks in when you write about what you learn and you have to explain it to someone.
With web development & programming you learn from doing the more you do the more u learn great video man keep shining 💪🏾💪🏾
My first programming language was C++. The professor I had elucidated the "complex" topics rather well, so I understand arrays, pointers, structs, enumerated lists, classes and objects. I shouldn't have any problem learning JavaScript. So, I think I'm going to dive right into it. And thanks for your inspirational story.
can you help me for c++ understand arrays, pointers, structs, enumerated lists, classes and objects.
watching this from a place of fear and confusion feels like i have direction once again. Thank you.
Got a new subscriber here! I'm starting Skillcrush courses in a month, but since watching this I'll definitely be checking out the odin project too, and my goal is to land my first tech job by this time next year. Excited to watch all your vids throughout your journey, and hope to achieve what you have as well! I'm in insurance now, transferred from bartending, so it's nice to see someone from outside the tech world succeed. Gives me hope this isn't a pipe dream and I'm on the right path. Thank you!
You can do it! Best of luck on your journey 🙂
First! You are an inspiration to all self taught devs, thanks for sharing your story:)
Appreciate you! Hopefully my story helps someone out there 😀
I just started Html and css a couple of months ago and im loving it i can't wait to see myself a year from now never give up because when you stop its hard to learn everything back over again
Lol you have a great sense of humour. The digression was funny about not finishing the landing page for the carpet cleaning. That's totally me. I am learning now and am taking so many projects for friends. I need a real web development job. I am ready to take the leap.
Thanks man! I’m on the struggle bus for deciding on the software engineering path to follow. Hearing others experiences, especially a fellow vet, helps.
Give it a try see if its something you like!
Hows is going so far?
@@boratsagdiyev522 Lots of development! I chose SkillDistillery as my bootcamp (4 month Java program) and have 1 month remaining. It’s been a heck of a journey and the light is at the end of the tunnel!
@@Rift_131 Keep going 💪
Huge inspiration! Good luck with your new job from Denmark!
Thank you!
What an amazing video! I’m currently taking Colt Steele’s web dev bootcamp through Udemy and was introduced to The Odin Project from a friend who’s a CS major in uni and I’m currently just going through the learning process. I’m still trying to improve in CSS and beginning to learn JavaScript and I have my first offer to design and build a website for someone. I actually have a meeting scheduled with them in a few days and I am so nervous and excited! Hearing your story is super encouraging because I don’t feel ready at all but I honestly think real world projects are the best way to learn!
That's awesome you already have a project lined up. I'm sure you'll do great! You'll have something to reference later for experience too.
Hey just curious how did it go?
@@ZakariyeAden_We came to an agreement and I’m building a website for their business. It’s a non-paid gig as this is my first time working with a client and I’ve learned SO much so far. I highly recommend projects as they have a completely different set of problems as compared to the exercises I had in my courses. Hope this helps you!
@@UNKNWN96 oh thats good you’ll have the experience than start working for team.
@@UNKNWN96 hey man how's it going? You finished the course?
Simper Fi! About to start my journey through new career in web development and I look forward to learning from you. For the Hord!
Ooorah!
Thank you! I'm a nurse ready to change my career and you were so Open and Honest it was well worth the watch beginning to end
I’m in ultrasound also trying to get out of healthcare and into tech. Are you trying to do web development?
@@valerie0879 omg yes ! Even if it means working with the systems we already have in place like point click care 😆 I don't care I just want out
@@SpaceChickCrypto same!!
@@SpaceChickCrypto i am also an RN pondering a career change into tech! I think we’re all burnt out!
@@valerie0879 how much ultrasound earn?
This is the best most informative video on this topic that I’ve seen and I’ve been watching them for two weeks while I’ve been working 11 hour days.
I don't think you understand how much this channel inspires me. I'm around the same age as you and I'm about to head into my final year of University.
This channel, your approach to web development, your honesty and positivity is very inspirational. I wish you the best of luck with your job man and I hope to maybe be your "colleague" by the end of the year!
You're awesome Dimo, making me blush over here ☺️
You'll definitely be a dev by the end of the year! Keep learning!!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Congratulations on securing your first tech job. Very inspiring as I am on a similar journey. Wishing you much success.
Thanks bro, I found this really motivating. I'm a 31 year old office worker who's a few weeks into a HTML and CSS course and I can't wait to build my own website. Getting a web development job would be a dream come true for me, keep up the great content. 🤙
Im rooting for you bro! You can do it!
Hey mate, I really support you in learning those topics ! Mee too I’m learning HTML and CSS and i’m at the end of CSS next week I will be learning Bootstrap then Javascript
How’s it going
@@thankyoushaun4256 hey there, I'm about to finish the React module in the Udemy full stack course. Then I'm going to make a few more websites from Front End Mentor and apply for jobs. I think I will be done with all of that in a month or two.
Stay strong folks 🤙
@@OhOk616 Mateee another update please?! How is it going!!!
I really like your take on the process and that you're not trying to sell anything! Thanks for sharing your path.
(Coming from someone who's a few credits away from having their computer science degree.)
Studying things like history and certain sciences you can just study and study, memorize to learn the material.
Things like math and more harder sciences and engineering, including software engineering (programming, oops, algorithms) are best learned by repetition and doing. Study tactics in calculus vs us history are sooo different. The best way to learn programming, for anyone who's new is to just practice. Code all the time. Even if it's little things. It'll cement the basics. You don't have to jump right into oops, algorithms. Software engineering, web development, programming in general is a constant learning process untill the day you retire. So dont get upset when you don't know everything at the beginning. No one does. To end this off, I've learned way more from udemy and on my own then I have in school.
100%
Great video bro! Just started HTML a week ago and this really helps :). Keep it up 😁
Love these goals! Now time for the work
Hey how are u doin?
Nail it there! "Precious makes diamond, difficulty makes you better"
You come across so nice and calm, my first time watching you and best believe I'll be watching everything you post
Dude. I am a writer and I've been in video production too. I can tell you that you are a DAMN good storyteller. Like... top-notch. Keep working on your YT channel. I am telling you, you're going to be really big one day. And if you ever want to change your career path, consider podcast hosting.
REALLY appreciate that, makes me a little more confident lol
This was super awesome to listen to. Has given me a lot of hope when it comes to leaning how to code and reaching one of my goals. Im gonna check out the rest of your channel. Oh oh and you know I peep that Gurren Lagann poster back there. One of my favorite animes of all time!!
Thank you so much! The part about blogging/ recording your progress really stuck to me. Given that it is your top recommendation I feel it'd be a great addition to your channel a video detailing exactly how you document your progress, how you plan your videos, which parts you choose to make a video on, what software you use, so we can follow a similar path of recording our own.
This is a really good idea for a piece of content, I added it to the queue!
Loved this post, thanks for sharing your journey big dog!
This was so cool to watch! Im close to finishing up a front end bootcamp soon, and I had no idea what to sort of expect/do afterwards. You're video here definitely gives me motive to keep pushing and working hard at it
Congrats bro! I'm just beginning my journey. It's really nice to see succeeding! Great motivation!
Cool, I liked the advice on deviating from curriculum in favor of doing actual projects. I've also done this a few times and they all taught me more than any single resource. I'm not employed yet though because I feel I need to learn more, it sucks, what you did is an inspiration to me.
Wow, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I have learnt a lot from this. Thanks
Very Inspiring video, Congrats on getting a job, Good Luck
Great video! It was nice to hear your story, i felt identify with it . I want to make my own projects and lose the fear to send applications. Greetings from Venezuela
front-end mentor is a great place to find ideas for projects to test and grow your knowlege

Thank you for sharing! I’m a mental health social worker and looking to change fields. Always nice to know that not everyone catches on right off the bat and that make carrier changes can happen!
You are an inspiration. I hope to land a job in around a year and a half.
Great insights Michael, Currently horning my skills to become a self-taught Developer.
Way to go man! Great content!
Congratulations n Good luck for ur new job 👍🏼
I'm on the "overwhelmed with JavaScript" part really had a goal to get a front end job by the end of the year but it's not looking that way. I haven't given up though we're still at the start of the year this video has made me consider writing down what I've learned hope it helps and hope I reach my goal at the end.
Odin project looks very useful I'll have to try it this week
Be consistent! Everything will eventually click!
YAAAAS!!! I had a similar journey, but with grinding on freelance work instead of youtube content! CONGRATS BRO!!!!!
Appreciate it!!
What a great video Michael and thank you for your service.
This was huge. Thanks.
Congratulations Bro, first time watching it! Amazing testimony as well as the joke. I straight subscribe to your channel bro. 🙂
Cool Luffy poster, man🔥💪

Mike, this so refreshing to know. Thanks a lot. I am motivated.
You are so motivating. I just got me the course, ty
This is very helpful. I am musician and making a career change into tech, web development. Currently I am in a bootcamp learning html, css, javascript, php, and mysql. Thanks for this as I am starting to apply to some basic jobs and your video is giving me hope!!
Glad it was helpful!
@Amar Yes I did!! I am now working for an events company and also doing freelance web work. Thanks!!
bro your voice very close to my best tutor on youtube mr Corey Schafer, new sub
Wow, watching this video shows that someone can be literally going through the exact same experiences as you but at a different time. It was as if you were describing my life in the past year. I hope my journey is as successful as yours.
I hope so too! Good luck!
Great vid bro, I'm just starting out and this is great motivation
Appreciate it!
Great story dude, inspiring
Congratulations man. You put in the effort required and demonstrated your passion. Thank you for being such an inspiration. I wish you well in your future in IT.
Cheers
Thankyou youtube algorithm for recommending this video. Coming from a coding background it took me about 2 months to learn full stack development in php though I'm still learning a lot of new things and learning mern stack. This video really motivated me, especially on the interview part!
Glad I could help!
Wow, this video was very helpful. It seems like the best thing you can do for a job interview is to practice copying other websites, which will inevitably improve your skills.
This was very helpful. Thank you. I will definitely look into the Oden Project
Thank you for this video. It's reassuring to hear other people's experiences. When I get to doubting myself and if I even have the capability to professionally do this stuff, hearing people just talk about it reminds me that my struggles and difficulties are very similar to those who are where I want to be. So if they still made it, then maybe I can too.
Awesome video. Thank you and congratulations !
Another great and insightful video, thank you for continuing to share your journey with us. Looking forward to your future videos and reflections after you've been working at your first dev job a couple of months. I'm sure the growth will be exponential, and your thoughts and insights will be just as exponentially beneficial to all of your viewers. Cheers!
I've been on the job a few days now and already have some great stories, can't wait to share them with you guys!
This is super inspiring. Thank you. Also on the journey.
Hah! Wrong digit. That’s hilarious!! I’m making the same goal for 2022, specializing in front-end development. This whole video is pretty much my game plan to switch careers
Thanks for the honest explanation❤
This was very nice and humbling to watch. I completely agree with deviating from the curriculum & building your own projects.
Edit: I'm a USAF vet myself. Thank you for your service.
Hey man! Fellow vet here(Air Force)! I just started to teach myself how to code recently. I’m working on HTML right now. So cool to see you achieve your goal man! Gives me hope lol
You can do it. Military training is waaay harder lol! Rooting for you man!
Inspiring stuff bruv! I'm trying to learn development too started November last year. You've inspired me to set mg deadline for the end of this year to be in a development job. Planning to make videos too and document the journey every step of the way! Starting with the odin project 👍
Subscribed, looking forward to watching your progress!
Nice. I just started to learn how to code HTML, CSS, and Javascript
Hey buddy, just subscribed! I decided to learn webdev for fun because that's my hobby, learning new tech. I like this video it gives me a motivation and some ideas that'll help me on my journey.
Thanks for the sub!
Wow! Thank you so much! So much value in your video!
Bro, I smashed that Subscribe button.
Thanks a ton.
Appreciate you!
hey thanks so much! watching your video for inspiration, taking a big leap in my life in this direction, appreciate how real you are and relatable, i think sometimes people forget what it was like to be a beginner! :)
You got this!
Thank you for your service.
Thanks bro , your story is inspiring!
I love this video big inspiration for me!
Congrats!
Thank you for your service. God bless.
Just saw this video and I am excited to start from your 1st one ! I decided to change career aswell. I work in a warehouse (food related) and order food for thousands each month and make all kinds of paperwork/analazing stuff, etc - but the place is toxic and it is not a good one. Making 550$ a month when I have bachelor in economics kinda sucks. 1 month ago decided to buy 1 udemy course, I am half way (JS atm and yea, it is overwhelming but I am trying to keep). After I finish it I plan on going and finishing Oden course, much more exercises. I do hope to be able to switch jobs by the end of 2022 or early 2023. Everything that makes 1000$ a month and above is perfect. Perks for being from east europe I guess, I can work for less :D
PS: Keep coding !
Good luck on your journey!
Thank you am a Nursing ready to ascend into another universe. Thanks for the informative info.
Best of luck!
The Odin Project is fucking awesome !
Agreed
This, I like. Why do I never get interviews like that, I get grilled on weird edge cases and odd tools, oh well it's all learning 😄
First video I have watched of yours: Thank you for your service, you seem like a really good dude - happy to hear about your success - please continue to document your experience, I honestly believe it will help others - Happy to sub and support!
Thanks and welcome!
True! I heartily agree.
Hey 👋 Michael. Thanks for sharing your self taught experience here. The advice on documenting one’s journey on RUclips is timely, as this is exactly what I’ve planned to do.
I also like the advice about doing your own projects when studying, rather than just copying exactly what a lot of these tutorials and coding resources provide.
Congratulations on securing your first job in tech! 🎉
First thanks for your service!
The inspiration in this video is surprisingly more beneficial/helpful to me as a new developer than some of the veteran coders information. Thanks brother!
Thank you! And glad I could help!
You are a nice guy. Thanks a lot!
I'm still in my Odin journey. The amount of reading is insane but I guess maybe it's just me since I like video format better.
nicely done!
Yo Michael, finally I became a front end dev
CONGRATS!!!! How's the dev life treating you??
@@MichaelWhiteDev been an amazing ride. New challenges every day, and I work with angular, a cool framework. Couldn't ask for more, but I'm still new to this. I hope I can grow into a better front end dev. Deadlines are short but it is worth the trouble.
Dude we have the same exact path!!!
Everything from Myspace to HTML, CSS, Javascript to picking up the skill backup in 2020 at around the same time give or take a month.
I started off learning from basically literal tutorials doing HTML CSS, and learned some javascript threw RUclips courses the following year 2021 and built a landing page with a button that leads to a loading bar, with blinking words.
Then I brought 2 books Computer programming for absolute beginners , and Sam's teach yourself HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Last February...
I'm 172 pages deep into CS for absolute beginners, learning about iterations, arrays, variables, for loops, while loops, integers, binomial numbers, decimals, even inheritance, structured code, and or if else. statements,
It's a solid path to be on!
I'm close to 2 years now and not getting any offers. In a few months I'll have to go back to some crap job to pay the bills and it will have been 2 years wasted. Consider yourself very lucky you were able to get in, many of us never catch that opportunity.
I am VERY lucky. I hate to hear your hunt isn't going your way but don't let the time go to waste, maybe some luck will go your way as well.
But why would you stop? You might be 4 feet short of gold. It would be a shame now, you are almost there.
Don’t give up! There’s no time limit, only “I got the job” or “I didn’t get it yet but my time will come”. If you love doing this then I believe that your time will come!
Do freelancing meanwhile.
Congrarts💪🏽
Congrats !!! This is inspiring
Thank you!!
when I saw 9 month. I hit like. God thanks for realistic hones talk.
Huge inspiration, i'm from brazil, then didn't understand 100%, but this video really help me. I'll continue the odin project!
could you maybe review the take home project that you did in 3 weeks? So we could get a hint of how complicated it was. Anyways great video!
Great idea for a piece of content! I'll add it to the queue!
