I like how you built and engineered your platform, I see guys build platforms with slideout drawers, but that elevates your sleeping level up closer to the roof, gives you way less room to dress, makes me claustorphobic, hehe. I just use container bins to store my camp gear, and they go outside for the night when sleeping. Much simpler, more space.
I made a similiar low profile platform but when I laid down I couldn’t close the rear door, I’m 6’2”. I found out the seats can easily be removed which will give me additional 6-8 inches.
For these wooden platforms behind seat...has anyone thought about impact of a rear-end crash? I just started building one super sturdy, 3/4" plywood and started thinking that maybe it wouldn't collapse and be super dangerous for passengers in back seat in a rea-end crash? Thoughts? Make collapsable somehow?
Would it have helped if you had made it a little taller to get ride of the bump? Also, would be cool idea if you made a drawer compartment underneath it to store some small flat items.
@@marcwetherbee6423 where there’s a will, there’s a way! 😉it was actually easier than removing the seats. I’m short so I just have a very comfy outdoor lounge cushion that I sleep in and so I can keep my feet level I just stick my backpack or anything underneath the feet part. I sleep with my head to the back.
Wondering if you will sell the old one when you upgrade to a new one? Or you will make some extra ones. I am looking for a trunk platform for my 2011 4runner sr5. Thanks!
The Exped Megamat fits perfectly between the wheel wells and is more comfortable than most home mattresses...pricey but worth every penny...and Exped stands by their warranty.
Thanks for sharing 👍. Are you able to put that back seats up with this platform installed? I see the 1 seat is up which is a good sign but just wanted to confirm your able to lift the other seat set as well without having to remove the platform. If you do have to remove it just to get the seat up, are you able to store the platform back in? I'm wanting to build something about the same but would like seats to move without having to take out the platform
Yes the seats fold up nicely, and its tight fitting so theres no movement of the platform. Keep in mind i built this as a temporary platform which is why its so simple. I plan on building a new one with drawers. Eventually.
Thanks for the compliment. I know there are some better options out there that you can just "buy" for your runner. I would look in to that. I'm not in the business as it were:-) The one's you can buy have drawers too!
I wish I had the measurements for you but I don't have anything beyond what the video has. It was easy though. Just take your time measuring, measure multiple times before you cut, dry fit the pieces you cut before you screw it all together and you'll be fine. Good luck. PS: I would recommend you cut small holes to access the front anchor points or at least install new anchors on the wood platform before you install the carpet. They will come in handy.
Actually back in October I bought a Megamat Duo from Exped. It fits absolutely perfect between the interior wheel wells and gives ample room to sprawl out or for two people to sleep next to each other, albeit a little tightly. The single person Thermarest pictured in the video is a nice option for solo trips when you need more space for gear - FYI. Us old guys like the platform to remove the hump completely as comfort becomes more of an issue when older.
Yes. Check out the product catalog on 80/20.net. This is the stuff I'll be using to build my new platform with slides and ceiling cabinets. This one was just a temp fix but worked great for camping.
@@marcwetherbee6423 , very cool resource! With your design, lots to be said for keeping it simple. Regarding the slight difference in height, even the carpet thickness would need to be a consideration for perfection. Planning is a great part of the adventure.
I'm 5'7" and fit perfect. I built one for my friend and he is taller (5'10" I think) and he fit fine when removing the rear seat (easy 2-bolt removal). Removing the seat makes a nice space for an RTIC cooler too and acts as an extension for the platform making the sleeping area much bigger.

This is perfect, just throw a mattress topper or inflatable on the platform with a sleeping bag and you're good to go

Yes, I removed my rear seats too. Lots of room!
I'm planning to remove mine lol😅
Thanks for the video! I just built my own based off what you did.
how did it come out?

If you sold these I'd consider buying one from you
Ditto
The third row really isn't that great for seating, but it does eliminate this problem.
Its like that for the sliding rear cargo tray

Very nice setup. I appreciate the video detail.
Check out the "Megamat Duo" sleeping pad. It fits perfectly between the wheel wells and is more comfy than most beds.
I heard you did an epic trip across Utah...you need to do more videos!!!
Yeah I went with this really cool dude who has an awesome Runner!
Did you keep any scraps of the plywood you can measure to determine if it is 1/2” or 3/4”?
Nice job!! Thanks!!
Nice build and thanks for sharing!
Very creative. Thanks.
My 91 4runner back seats fold 99% flat. I guess 2nd gen got its advantages, still.
I completely removed that hump as well as the seats.
Didn't know one could remove the hump?

Nice DIY ! What mattress did you use that would fit in that space?

Hi. What’s the length from the rear hatch edge to the top of the flat area, please? Basically, what is the length of the sleepable space? Width?
Pretty cool. Do you know if there are ready-made decks like this one without having to build it myself?
Yes, many manufacturers do something but with drawers usually which I plan to replace with. Just google it.
@@marcwetherbee6423 thanks, not looking for drawers. Just a simple platform for now.

The seats can also recline with the platform in place.
Thank you! Your a god! I am saved!
Do you take orders by chance? Really like what you did!

Can both back seats be up like normal for when you aren't in "camping mode' ?
Absolutely
Nice work.I’m gonna copy you .
Good luck. Sorry I don't have more details for you.
Sweet job!! Anyway you can send me your measurements so i can just get to cutting wood. This is a genious idea!!

Sorry I don't have the exact dimensions.
FYI - the roll out shelve option does create a flat platform in the beloved 4Runner
not totally flat even with the tray.
Nice! But the remedy is an inflatable mattress. Done deal.

what are the measurements bruh
Are you able to keep the platform in with the seats in the upright position?

How long is the sleeping area? I’m 75” tall. Could I sleep straight in the back of a 4Runner?
It measures from the hatch to the top of the rear seats folded down. You'll have to measure that distance, and that's what it is.
@@marcwetherbee6423 Thanks Marc, I just don't have a 5th Gen yet... ;-)
I will pay you $100 to build me one.
Please may you post the dimensions?
You'll have to do your own measure as I'm told there are slight variations from vehicle to vehicle
Nice, but if you had the sliding cargo deck it would’ve been flat to begin with. Toyota knows what’s up.
Dimensions???
I don't have the exact dimensions, sorry.
Nice job, how deep is the sleeping area (laying straight)? Thx!
