      David Sosa why Lord of The Rings needed elves and orcs? Why Star Wars needed space wizards? Some movies tell a story and have message that is not entirely connected to the settings or worlds they create.

      Atom Turtle Yeah, pretty much. The pregnant ancient evil alien thing that's not actually a killer clown was there to inject steroids on the fear element of the story. If we want to question the presence of fear-instilling motherfuckers we already disregarded 80% of H.P. Lovecraft's work and we know what an influential figure the man has been in horror and sci-fi. King probably wanted to expand on what he did with The Body and make it more epic and creepier, and he's in his full right to do so and the result was pretty awesome, so there.

      +David Sosa Its so cute you can't even see the stupidity behind your own reply. The main theme of the story is to overcome you own fears and personal demons. Which character do you think embodies those fears? Maybe a shape-shifting extradimensional being that can turn into your biggest fears and can only be defeated once you believe in yourself and learn to overcome that same fear IT uses against you? THE CHARACTER HAS A THEMATIC PURPOSE BY SERVING AS THE MAIN ANTAGONIST. That's why his presence is mandatory, jesus christ.

    From Rob's Facebook:
    "And before I get all the King fans thumping on me, let me just say that disliking IT is not a reflection of Stephen King as a whole.
    I like Stephen King. Seems like an awesome guy with a great sense of humor (SEE: Attached Meme). I also appreciate his technical style a LOT. And he wrote plenty of books I love.
    All I'm saying is that things like Misery, The Body (Stand By Me), Delores Claiborne, The Stand, his numerous short stories, and -- hell, even The Shining -- all blow IT out of the water for me.
    I'm just not a fan of that book.
    And it would be intellectually dishonest of me not to mention that in my review. Because if a movie is trying hard to emulate the source material, and I don't like that source material, you have the right to know that."

    I thought the bill skarsgard pennywise was great. He was very creepy however he also had the super dark humor down. And I think it would have to be intentional, specifically the scene where Mike's getting bullied. Pennywise is spotted and waves at him with some other kids arm, that was fucking hilarious, and I feel like it's too funny to not be on purpose

    • @wyoboy01

      Kaelan McDowell When the performance shows, there's so much energy and strain as he taunts and persuades. It can't be unintentional, he's just too much fun! It sucks that a lot of his work is diluted through the effects, but Skårsgard gave one hell of a thrill-ride. Really put the effort.

    Fun fact: Pennywise is not the monster. 'It' is the monster. That's the point. He's not meant to be either funny OR particularly frightening. 'It' is a pan-dimensional, eternal and all-consuming force of evil that affects the form of a carnival clown (one of many forms), but he's not ACTUALLY supposed to look or feel like a clown, especially not to kids. At no point in the book is any child drawn toward Pennywise. The clown guise is meant to freak them out, because It likes to feed on the kids when they're terrified. The Pennywise character is a game to It.
    Pennywise is theatrical. Pennywise is basically some cosmic, Lovecraftian devourer deciding to have some grisly fun by dressing up as Hamill's Joker. All It's other manifestations are the result of individual's kid's traumas (Eddie's hypochondria, Beverly's sexual abuse, Bill's grief and guilt, Mike being the only black kid in town etc.), which, according to It, are easier to shape into a corporeal form because of a kid's more fertile imagination.

    • @pi_beta7306
      @pi_beta7306 7 лет назад +10

      In the book, the kids notice that when Pennywise appears (I believe it was in the moving book/picture), the adults seemed to not notice and the kids were running AWAY from him! It's been awhile since I read the book so hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong on this.

      "It"/Pennywise could be possible representation of the H.P Lovecraft character Nyalahotep. (I think that's how it's spelt) There are similarites; both can and have assumed different forms throughout time, are tricksters and deceivers by nature and both are associated with fear and madness. I believe Nyalohetep has gone by the name Randal Flagg as well who is the antagonist in one of Kings other works The Stand.

      I will nitpick a little to say that Georgie in the novel, while at first really unnerved by Pennywise, feels more at ease when Pennywise's eyes go blue and he starts talking to him (though it's definitely the lure of getting the boat back that keeps him there). That said, he is still creeped out a little, and I thought they portrayed that well in the film. But I totally agree that otherwise, Pennywise just freaks out and/or terrifies all of the other kids (in the varying eras) it encounters, so you're bang on with that. I loved the film, and it's now one of my favourite Stephen King adaptations.

      I don't think It is even supposed to be a scary story. It's more about friendship and dealing with childhood problems. It is just the supernatural enemy that connects the group of friends together because they're all forced to deal with him at some point.

    The best way I could put it is "The miniseries is a great B-movie, The film is a great big-budget horror movie" They aren't instantly comparable, but come with different strengths and weaknesses for what they were trying to do, so which one you like more (if you like them at all) depends on what you're looking for. (Long-ass comparison below the cut, beware!)
    I find Tim Curry as Pennywise campy and fun to watch, but not scary. I found Bill Skarsgård scary, but his personality didn't get as many chances to shine through as Curry (when it does it really works though, I love his introduction and the confrontations). Tim Curry is more memorable imo but Skarsgård still does a great job.
    The mini-series relies more on creepy imagery (as much as they could allow) but it doesn't always work and can get a bit silly. The remake has more jump scares (but not too many), which can detract from it, but what creepy imagery is there is well done (the scene in the house is probably my favourite in the entire movie).
    The child actors in both are solid, I buy that they're friends and the personalities are consistent, it just depends which performance is more to your taste (60's kids going to the movies and building dams or 80's kids riding on their bikes and shooting the shit). Same for the bullies, do you want evil greasers or evil metalheads?
    Both movies also fall into the trap of having random silly moments that didn't do the film any favours, but didn't ruin the overall experience for me (the miniseries had a, in my opinion, lame showdown with the villain and weird editing that took away from the creepiness; but the remake has random 80's montages and jokes that could have worked but are put in at jarring moments, like Rob pointed out). I never thought the movie "didn't know what it was doing" though, those moments take up like 5 minutes of 2 hours.
    If you aren't a fan of the original story, it won't change your mind, so I'm not surprised Doug and Rob don't care for it. If you are though, or just like a good creature feature, give it a look see. I had a blast myself.

      Don't apologize Ally, I think it's a fair write up myself. I'm on the side that says Tim Curry's Pennywise is more approachable (to young kids) than Bill's, but either way both are great. And I love the novel but realize not everyone does!

    • @Hans-andersen
      @Hans-andersen 7 лет назад +10

      Ally Gator Animator first of all, it's not a remake. the mini series are a bunch of hour long episodes on network tv made with a pg 13 rating back in the 90's. The movie is an adaptation from the book. Now, the reason why they have those silly moments are for 2 reason. one is to remind people that they are still kids. even though they're going through all of this be, they're still 10 year old kids, and kids like to have fun. the other reason for them silly moments is because you need a rest point. a movie can't be all tension and scares or it's going to make people get used to the tension that when something happens, they can't react making the movie boring.

    • @AllyGatorAnimator
      @AllyGatorAnimator 7 лет назад +5

      The thing is, semantics aside, my points about both versions still stand, as (like I said) neither are directly comparable as they do very different things with their source. Though sorry for using the wrong terminology.
      Regarding the silly moments, I was referring more to scenes that were _supposed_ to be scary (at least in the mini-series). The showdown in the miniseries is incredibly goofy to me after all that had happened before, and the constant dramatic zooms (which granted are in the adult sections) get so over the top it's laughable to me (bear in mind I first watched the mini-series when I was a child too).
      The movies silly moments are the ones that come from moments of calm, because their placement is in seemingly serious moments. You'll get effective bits like the quarry scene, or the banter on their bikes, then you get scenes like the "cleaning the blood" montage that actually made the entire audience laugh and mutter "what the fuck?" because the music and happy tone came out of nowhere.
      Like I said though, in both versions it never took me out of the experience, I'm kind of surprised you felt the need to so deeply defend the one criticism I said wasn't even that big of a deal :P

    I'm not quite understanding why they think the movie had no idea what it wanted to be. To me, IT knew exactly what it wanted to be: a fun thriller with a ridiculous premise and it delivered on that perfectly. I've noticed in recent years that I'm getting more and more annoyed with critics because they forget that a movie's main goal is to be fun to watch. Yes, story structure, character development, plot, and all that jazz matter but whether or not the movie entertains also holds merit. I mean yeah, I do have quite a few problems with IT but the reason I love it so much is because it delivered on entertainment so well. It knew that it was stupid and rolled with it.

    • @nicklewis6279

      MagicalPouchOfMagic I enjoyed it. Even though I think some of the movie can drag I don't mind it. And I just wish pennywise and the kids had more dialogue like the old movie did. When pennywise runs at the kids even though they found it funny I found it pretty damn creepy. And I think some of the pacing is kinda odd. However I can say I'm happy I seen it.

      They are legit angry, they couldn't even talk properly, Doug roasted the first IT movie so he probably had already a lot of notes and script ready for the review of this one, now he can't even use his stupid ballons joke without looking like a idiot, it was entertaining to see him ranting like a little bitch that coouldn't even accept it's a good movie, instead they are saying they felt bad for the people involved on this, yes lets feel bad for the people involved in a movie that ended being a huge hit and got ton of praise, hahaha damn.

    • @jorgeortiz8183
      @jorgeortiz8183 7 лет назад +12

      Yeah, but Rob admitted that he was bored. They weren't bashing an entertaining film. It would have been entertaining if they stuck with one tone throughout. The film's conflicted because it's sophistication is always interrupted by the B horror film senseless adrenaline. The movie develops psychological scares intertwined with the kids' family and school dilemmas, their alienation from the rest of society. Bill's taunted by Pennywise with the possible survival of his brother, something his family shuns him for, and something he feels responsible for. Mike revisited the death of his family burning alive, and Henry Bowers is manipulated to hold onto his desperation for dominance and assertion by falling into the urge of killing his father. This isn't fun, it's just messed up. So when you have the jump scares with Pennywise running up at the screen with the loudest sound possible, and blurring and shacking the entire screen, with that balls-to-the-walls thrilling set-piece in the haunted house with Pennywise cartoonishly springing out of a coffin and making contortions as he cracks his bones back straight, it's definitely entertaining, but there's no denying you started with a psychological horror film and then abandoned it. It's like Doug said, it's only best in pieces.

    • @MagicalPouchOfMagic
      @MagicalPouchOfMagic 7 лет назад +8

      +Jorge Ortiz I think I disagree because I have a lot of fun learning about the characters and their fucked up situations. I'm not someone who's affected easily by horrifying events happening to fictional beings. It's always a fun challenge for me to see if a piece of media can get me connected to its characters since I'm so picky. Tbh my biggest problem with the film is that I feel some character's messed up pasts aren't touched on enough and makes them feel underdeveloped (granted that's A LOT of characters for that run-time so I understand why some of them didn't get the screen time they deserved). I think Eddie and Beverly were developed the best and even though we barely got time with Henry's dad, that one scene of them interacting gave me a pretty decent idea of what he goes through daily since I've seen those kinds of things myself. For me, the tone was fine because the film was able to get me attached to a couple characters so that I cared when the off the wall stuff began happening to them.

      I can not like this movie because we had another chance at having a scary 'IT' finally and we still didnt get it. I dont expect it to be perfect, but i would hope that a scary movie would achieve being scary at least half the times it attempts being scary. You can say they are just "crying about the CG" all you want but when Pennywise looks like he was animated by Disney circa 1990 various times throughout the movie then there is a problem with the effects. For me, there were several scenes that were simultaneously good and bad. Did i hate the movie? No, there was some good stuff in there, some cool scenes. Was it amazing? God no. It was okay.

      Eh, in the book the only time he really tries to lure a kid by being something nice is the opening scene. After that, it's pretty much him scaring the shit out of the children over and over, like a predator playing with his food.

    I liked this film. It wasn't perfect by any means but it was a lot of fun and FUN is missing from horror movies these day. I appreciated that. Also the soundtrack was amazing. I never thought I'd hear The Cure, Anthrax, XTC (yes!), and New Kids on the Block in the same movie, let alone a horror movie. It was fun

      Apparently they thought It couldn't choose what kind of movie it wanted to be. They personally felt certain scenes such aforementioned slow motion during the rock fight, or rock fight in general, did not mesh well with what the tone said was a serious horror movie. If you do not think so that is fine. They don't and that is also fine. It's rather subjective.

    I loved it. It was creepy, never overly scary, sure. Nothing felt out of place, tone wise, I just swung with it; the tone is kids facing this horror that's steadily gaining more of a foothold and getting worse and more deadly, while still having little moments where they're being kids.

      That's Richie's character. His comedy, whether funny or inappropriate, us a cover up for how his home life makes him feel. Yeah, each character doesn't have their background specifically fleshed out, but Richie's parents are neglectful, his mother an alcoholic. His humour is a coping mechanism. It shows at inappropriate times because that's how he deals with things

    Here is something that internet critics need to stop being sticklers about : Tonal consistency. I am not sure if its because they tend to be self taught amateurs, but a movies "tone" is not the same thing as a movies "message." A movie can swap its tone from comedic, to dramatic, to scary all it wants if it still matches the overarching message the movie is trying to convey. This view that if a movie is supposed to be "scary" then every scene needs to set that tone is very shortsighted.
    On one of the saddest days of my life I also remember laughing so hard I cried. Real life has no tonal consistency and I dont see why our movies need to either. IT is supposed to be scary at times yes, but when its not, its still about a group of close knit kids growing of in a smallish town in Maine. Sure there may be a killer clown stalking the town, but that doesn't change the fact your mother is a hypochondriac, or that you are dealing with a developmental stuttering issue, or new feelings of sexual desire, or the fact that your peers are often jerks.
    In short, I found IT refreshing because of its tonal shifts, not in spite of them; and I wish more critics would break out of their self imposed ruleset on tone.

      Bio&BlastBeats, "the entire time"? Dude, watch the first 29 minutes of that Sibling Rivalry because it was 99% praise. They even said it was better than most MCU movies, which they mostly enjoy. Even in the spoilers, their problems were nitpicks. They even spent a good chunk of the spoilers section defending the film from extremist political think pieces that said the film was either anti-American or anti-feminist.
      You said they "never [gave] their own solutions" to their critiques? That is objectively false.
      They said had a problem with Ares's design? They suggested to use Ares's comic design instead (which people universally agree is way cooler than the movie's design). They had a problem with Ares having too much dialogue in the final fight? Simple fix. Just cut the dialogue and have hardcore fights like they had in the rest of the movie. That doesn't need a major explanation.
      Seriously, dude. Lay off the hate goggles and actually listen to what they're saying. They praised it as the best DC movie since The Dark Knight, and they even brought up how WW was the first film since the Donner Superman to successfully embody the heroism of the Golden Age comics. Stop trolling and be rational. If you're trying to prove me wrong, actually bring up points they said that support your argument.

      Saying that, I still really enjoy watching them together, even if they are ripping apart films that I like.
      Personally, the only thing anyone enjoys from the miniseries is Tim Curry as Pennywise. That's usually it 😂. Whether he entertains you or scares you, he is the only reason anyone really remembers the miniseries. Without him, I doubt it would have been as successful.

But Rob said it himself that some people (not a lot as they have to come out of the wood work apparently) say that the novel isn't that good. Then proceeds to talk about the film being adapted from source material that wasn't good. Well. No. Pause... a small amount of people think it's not King's best work so there for it's fact that the book isn't good? What about the overwhelming response from the rest who love that book?... they must be wrong?

      King himself doesn't think it's his best work. The prolem with it is that it was written in King's "constantly high off his ass and drunk" period. Some good things (such as Cujo) came out then. IT just wasn't one of them.

    The only reason they hate IT and try to scrape as many negatives as they can (which judging by the negative comments Sibling Rivalry got basically no one agrees with) is because they expected the movie to be bad, and already set up a live NC episode on the movie before it came out. They would of went into the cinema with a negative mind from the get-go trying to find as many faults as possible for the episode, even if non-existent, and now that the movie has been praised with good reviews look foolish.
    Sorry guys, love most the work you do, but I can see right through this.

      Their work is literally to criticize things. A friend of mine is a sound designer and he finds flaws in music all the time, automatically. A chef will criticize food more harshly as well. You take your work home with you and things like that happen. Plus the NC episodes aren't necessarily Doug Walker saying he hates a movie, just like the AVGN episodes don't mean James Rolfe hates those games.

      Sook9 + If you selectively choose scenes to describe from any book or film without describing the context, of course its going to sound bad. “The Shining” is a great film, but if one selectively cherry pick scenes to describe it, as you do, such as saying that its just about “furries in dog costumes giving blowjobs”, its a manipulative tactic to make the material sound bad. “Ulysses” can be reduced to “a guy shits in an outhouse”. “Hamlet” can be reduced to “guy wants to fuck his mother”.

    I actually quite like that initial "fake scare" scene, and I have one main reason why. I remember being a little kid and having the same exact thing scare me. I remember going down the dark hallway or being asked to take out the trash at night and having every little thing scare me, or feeling like every little light was a pair of eyes looking at me. To me that first scene was just a simple little thing showing how small kids like that process and feel fear. In many ways, the whole movie is about that. Kids get scared over the weirdest things. Mildly unsettling or spooky things that might not stick with someone older, will genuinely scare a child, quite a lot really. Everyone has had a painting or picture in their house that just kinda creeps them out, and everyone remembers the moment they just stopped being afraid of it. You are right, though. The clown stuff is bullshit, even if the guy is acting his little heart out the whole time.

    Characters in 2017 adaptation definately have more personality than in the '90 mini series, I actually believed them and there wasn't any corniness, I felt their connection and problems. And the clown was a perfect mash of mistery, creepiness and dark humour. And he was definately intentionally darkly hilarious. You see him acting silly and funny but you know he's the one doing terrible things. And he has that murderous look on his face and he mocks children when they're crying and panicking and being bullied and also picks on their real fears, that all was a great combination. And the way kids' fears were fleshed out and subtly explained was amazing. And the clown isn't supposed to lure the kids in but to scare them. He feeds on fear.
    Tim Curry's clown just had more dialogue but he was just hilarious and random as fuck.
    Also the bullies were actually flashed out and scenes with them were damn good.
    I honestly can't comprehend how you two made your arguments. Also so much whining abt CGI wow

I'm not a fan of them picking films to review for NC that they know will get a lot of views before they even know if they have anything interesting to say about it. It comes across now like they just review films that are popular at the moment (hence always picking films that are in theaters) as opposed to watching a film and then deciding if they have interesting and funny things to say about it.

    "YOU SUCK! You aren't real critics! You're just nostalgic for the original and hate everything new! You saw a different movie than everyone else!"
    Give me a fucking break...

      Ashton The movie was more of a coming of age movie with horror elements to me, so im okay with it not being scary. Its just a fun ride in my opinion, but I'll respect yours.

      I felt like some were almost funny, but I only actually laughed at that one. The other ones seemed to rely on "haha it's funny because a kid is saying something dirty!1!"

    I saw this gem on opening night...I have never witnessed a room packed full of people so terrified in my life honestly, this blows the original out of the water and I loved the original, I know that the cinematic version has been cut as my friend works at the cinema and complained that certain scenes from a "staff showing" were majorly different than the version me and my friends saw, it's still a brilliant movie and I really don't understand the hate here...wait till it's had a directors cut release and then make your own mind up, I will say though that it did seem slightly choppy in the way that it was paced but again...we saw a different cut, either way, IT is a diamond in these dark days....also the opening five minutes? Holy shit...wasn't actually expecting that, I do hope others share my opinion, apologies for rambling.

      Just got back from seeing IT. It's great! Beats the everloving sh*t outta the mini series. Although I agree with Doug and Rob on one thing; the CGI for Pennywise sticks out like a sore thumb and kinda sucks.

      Agreed. I haven't seen a theater room so packed for a horror movie ever in my local cinema (Germany). It was sold out.
      Interesting to read that this movie was cut and still remained over 2 hours long, still making it one of the longest horror movies ever.

    I personally enjoyed the movie. I thought it was a lot better than the miniseries. However there were a few things that bothered me...mainly because it was different from the source.
    (Spoiler)
    First off...the fact that not one of the kids say "Beep Beep Richie" ever in the movie, even though there were countless opportunists...but then Pennywise randomly says it for some reason. Why did he say it to him? Idek. There wasn't any context for the phrase.
    Second, I did assume the gangbang wasn't gonna be in here and that doesn't bother me...but what I was hoping for the most was The Turtle.....they reference a turtle once or twice but never THE Turtle. which is the other half of what Pennwise really is. The miniseries didn't do it either and I was hoping they would finally get it right...but sadly no Turtle.
    Another BIG problem I had with the movie was Patrick Hockstetter: The actor who played him was BRILLIANT. He had a terrifying stare and an overall creepiness...but he did NOTHING in the movie and dies off quickly. In the book he is one of if not the most fucked up characters in the story. The actor they chose was perfect for the character but they did nothing with him...such a wasted opportunity if you ask me.
    Honestly..I didn't think the movie was much like the book at all..the miniseries got it better in some ways. But it was still a better watch. I had fun the whole time and I'm afraid I can't agree with Doug and Rob on this one. 4/5 stars

      Personally I don't think the turtle or the ritual would have really worked in movie form. I enjoyed it in the book, but I can imagine a lot of people being confused or finding it jarring to suddenly have this whole other level there, especially when a movie has limited time to explain it (not even the miniseries would have had time). I get why they chose to focus primarily on the monstrous side of IT and keep Pennywise's defeat as the kids overcoming their fears, it's more concise. Who knows? They may reference the true identity and existence of IT in the second chapter.

    I was afraid of the original and I still get chills about it. The sink scene with Beverly was so simple that I was scared of drains for along time. It was blank reaction from her father while his daughter is covered in blood that was just shook me. I'm also a person who gets scared by things easily though.

    This is kinda the curse of the critic. When you spend so much time pointing out all the bad parts of movies eventually that's all you see. I noticed that neither Doug or Rob had much of anything positive to say about the movie despite "It" having lots of improvements over the original mini series. Their critiques are legitimate, and I would have to agree with most of them. I just don't think they ruined the film. The review may have been more balanced, but every time Doug even hints that he enjoyed something about "It" Rob shuts him down with mass negativity.
