tyrone from Wii Sports pitchers ideally like to throw no more than 15 pitches per inning to be efficient, so yes he threw over an ideal innings worth to belt alone
I always thought a player's ability to stretch out an at-bat was an underrated skill, especially if he's up against a closer. One of my favorite players, Carlos Guillen, always seemed to be great at it. He would just keep fouling, and have this bored look on his face like, "I'll keep doing this until you give me something good."
Fred Matt its hard for people who find baseball boring to understand how good this was.some say hes a garbage batter.no.hes good.to foul balls and for the pitcher not to hit him or walked him on balls.thats good.plus made the pitcher tired.lol
Man I now just how that feels, I pitched a 36 pitch at bat ending in a walk, turned into a 60ish pitch inning with only two runs scored. But I mean that feeling when you’ve been pitching to the same guy for almost 20 minutes then losing the fight is horrible.
You might. 20 years ago Ricky Gutierrez had a 20 pitch at-bat against Bartolo Colon (who coincidentally still pitches), so this record could be broken sooner than you think.
By the way, when I was a teenager, I read a book entitied "The Boy who Batted 1.000". Scouts for a failing team look for some star somewhere that can turn things around, and finds a boy who never misses; always hits the ball. So they bring him up to the majors and find one catch. He always hits but he always hits foul. And so the team uses him to wear down the pitchers with 20-30 foul ball marathons until the pitcher walks him, after which his team usually scores big. His batting average is undefined. It is 0/0. That is, until the last pitch of the World Series, where the boy hits a long fly to right, and by chance it bounces into fair territory for a home run. Batting average, 1 at bat, 1 hit, average 1.000. I wish I could find that book now.
@@domanddev That's exactly what happens in the book. When he comes up to the plate, he gets an automatic walk, that is, until they can't do that; for example, bases loaded, bottom of 9th, score tied. Then in the book you get 20 or 30 or more straight foul balls until eventually an unintentional walk occurs.
At games end: -San Fran wins 4-2 -Belt goes 3 for 5 with two runs and a RBI -Barria pitches 2+ innings allowing 3 runs on 77 pitches. After reading the boxscore sure seems to me that this at bat really set the tone for the entire game.

Most productive at bat ever. If you can set up your team to get ahead by forcing the starting pitcher to throw 21 pitches, you set you team up for a starter that gets tired earlier in the game to help give your team something to hit. Nice work
I've read about some guy in Japan who purposely fouls off as many pitches as possible to wear down the opposing team's pitcher and this reminds me of that.

I am still so impressed by Barria in this at bat. 21 years old, strike thrower, composed, battles for 21 straight pitches (with no outs in the first!) and wins the battle. 12 3-2 pitches!!! He's thinking this guy's the second batter and he's already ruining my chance at going deep in the game! Doesn't matter, just executes pitches, still worried about the runner on the 19th pitch! It's a shame the way the Angels jerked him around last year, should have been the 4th or 5th guy in the rotation on opening day. I really hope he makes their rotation this year.
Belt is one of the hardest outs in the mlb. he's got a great eye and can foul off just about anything that isn't in the dirt or above his helmet. good player.
To prevent time-wasting like this, all future MLB plate appearances will have a total pitch cap of ten pitches. If a plate appearance lasts for more than ten pitches, the batsman will be automatically given a home run, and all runners on base will score. The batsman will not be allowed to circle the bases however, as this is counterproductive to the nature of this measure. This initiative will not only serve to increase the pace of play, it will increase offense as well. Trials of this rule will be conducted during minor league games starting from 8/1/2018.
The commentators are talking about the weather (sunny and warm)! They seem oblivious to the record. They finally mention it well after the fly-out. I could do that job. And notice that the crowd is not into this at all. The crowd is fast asleep. Until pitch 15. But even then, it's not fun for anyone -- except the hitter.
Great lesson for the kid. Looks like he might need to work on a strikeout pitch, but definitely looks like he has some good control to make Belt swing that much.

that ab was 20 pitches and also I think it was still more impressive because it was the first inning so the pitcher was not tired and it was important to score runs or get him out of the game
