"I'll just watch Belts at bat, then I'll get going."
Teammates: "What's he throwing?"
Belt: "I dont know"
Belt: "The baseball"
Belt: "yes"
what?
Haha
Astros: we know
Mlb: we wanna speed games up
Brandon belt: hold my beer
MLB: we ran out of beer thirteen pitches ago
Even tho he got out Belt def won this battle. Made him pitch an innings worth just to him
tyrone from Wii Sports your right, it’s a bit more
2
tyrone from Wii Sports pitchers ideally like to throw no more than 15 pitches per inning to be efficient, so yes he threw over an ideal innings worth to belt alone
I always thought a player's ability to stretch out an at-bat was an underrated skill, especially if he's up against a closer. One of my favorite players, Carlos Guillen, always seemed to be great at it. He would just keep fouling, and have this bored look on his face like, "I'll keep doing this until you give me something good."
That’s not winning the battle if you flew out
image if this was game 7 of the world series in the 15th inning
Anthony Kernich that would be more and it would be more epic if was position player vs relief pitcher from Al
That’d be the greatest at bat of all time. Just has to end in a walk off homer
they would replace the reliever with another in the middle of the at bat like in do all the time when I get to play the show
Thank you MLB for uploading the entire at bat. Great piece of footage to watch full thorough
hahah that sarcasm.
The Uniform that's the amount of pitches, the pitcher has thrown. When the video starts the count is 0-0. No balls no strikes.
The Uniform he had 7 pitches already because Belt's not the lead off hitter.
The Uniform were you paying attention? It was a 21 pitch at bat and they showed all of them
Fred Matt its hard for people who find baseball boring to understand how good this was.some say hes a garbage batter.no.hes good.to foul balls and for the pitcher not to hit him or walked him on balls.thats good.plus made the pitcher tired.lol
YOU get a foul ball, and YOU get a foul ball, and YOU get a foul ball ...
Everyone gets a foul ball!!!
Wow! 21 pitch AB. 16 fouled off including 10 in a row. I doubt I’ll see this record beat in my lifetime. Well done Brandon!
Uncle Trev how old are you? It depends on age.
You might. 20 years ago Ricky Gutierrez had a 20 pitch at-bat against Bartolo Colon (who coincidentally still pitches), so this record could be broken sooner than you think.
Belt didn’t even draw a walk or get a hit...........lol geez. Most anticlimactic thing for him.
danman6669 no. No matter what happens that was a fantastic at bar. Obviously he would rather get on base but that was still a big deal
danman6669 Im gonna respond to this comment in twenty years and that comment will read "Bartolo is still pitching"
Now that is a battle...
Can you imagine how disheartening it would have been for the pitcher if Belt got a hit or walk after 21 pitches? At least he got an out
I reckon a baulk would have been the worst
Anthony Kernich a balk would just allow the runner to advance
Man I now just how that feels, I pitched a 36 pitch at bat ending in a walk, turned into a 60ish pitch inning with only two runs scored. But I mean that feeling when you’ve been pitching to the same guy for almost 20 minutes then losing the fight is horrible.
Or if he hit him with a pitch.
Choi Choi you just shut up he was sharing his opinion you prolly don't even play baseball, you are prolly some foot fairy.
At games end:
-San Fran wins 4-2
-Belt goes 3 for 5 with two runs and a RBI
-Barria pitches 2+ innings allowing 3 runs on 77 pitches.
After reading the boxscore sure seems to me that this at bat really set the tone for the entire game.
Thank You
By the way, when I was a teenager, I read a book entitied "The Boy who Batted 1.000". Scouts for a failing team look for some star somewhere that can turn things around, and finds a boy who never misses; always hits the ball. So they bring him up to the majors and find one catch. He always hits but he always hits foul. And so the team uses him to wear down the pitchers with 20-30 foul ball marathons until the pitcher walks him, after which his team usually scores big. His batting average is undefined. It is 0/0. That is, until the last pitch of the World Series, where the boy hits a long fly to right, and by chance it bounces into fair territory for a home run. Batting average, 1 at bat, 1 hit, average 1.000. I wish I could find that book now.
I know its 3 years later but if that link doesn't work there are a few copies on eBay though they ain't cheap
Sounds like a good book but wouldn’t teams eventually just start intentionally walking him since he’s going to inevitably get on base anyway? Lol
@@domanddev That's exactly what happens in the book. When he comes up to the plate, he gets an automatic walk, that is, until they can't do that; for example, bases loaded, bottom of 9th, score tied. Then in the book you get 20 or 30 or more straight foul balls until eventually an unintentional walk occurs.
This book is based on all true events. Happened in the 30s if I remember correctly
Props to the pitcher too for not walking him.
19 of his pitches we're off the plate
BOI
tyrone from Wii Sports Yea but they were all close and he forced Belt to defend the plate
Probably would’ve been better for him to walk him in four pitches😂
@@jjtomsickgolf true, he just worked up his pitch count but I appreciated the battle.
This is as much a feat for Barria as it was for Belt. He had to throw all those pitches for strikes. Amazing battle.
Yeah, very much a dual achievement, for sure. Both their names are going into the record books.
Surprised I had to scroll this far down to find this comment. Barria has amazing command.
I don’t know about that lol
Brandon Belt - a souvenir machine !!
Breaking any MLB record is impressive
Connor Mathieson Honestly, they're all held by early 1900s teams for the most part and it's just not even possible to sniff them.
Patrick Star ,you are a⭐🌟🌠⭐🌟🌠👍
Such an old game, all records are hard to break and deserve some praise.
Including consecutive games with a K for a batter.
including consecutive 3 pointers by a quarterback against a lefty center
So glad that MLB got Kruk and Kuip's broadcast-- Best announcer duo in baseball; (Even if the homer in me wants to say best announcer currently active, period ;P)
legendary. Remember this, because In 20 years It'll make for a great trivia question
Belt is most underrated 1b in baseball.
I think I actually aged during this at bat
FigsLee when are you not aging?
We all did, brotha.
J rock When Pence is up to bat. He swings and misses at everything these days. And he swings at everything.
Aw, I miss me my Hunter Pence. Signed, Astros fans
Oh I thought it was Mike Pence for a second
Reporter: Can you give us any details of your new contract?
Belt: I get paid by the hour
Brandon Belt: "How tired you want this pitcher?"
Teammates: *y e s*
I'm a Dodgers fan but I can't even be mad at this hahaha that was just awesome! I like how the Giant's dugout was having a laugh while the Angel's dugout was all frustrated. Good stuff guys, looking forward to seeing Dodgers vs Giants this weekend!
There are enough means of entertainment for the fast-paced, high stimulation, low attention span types in the modern age. Baseball is a thinking man's game, keep it the pace it is.
I absolutely agree well said friend
damn impressive... never thought I would enjoy 14 minutes ending in an out..... great battle..... and the batter actually won!
Thank God for the new pitch clock. How did we watch baseball back then? Took forever!
I personally had no issues with the leisurely pace of the game prior to this season.
@@smill1985I agree, so much more interesting and more pure without the new rules
Thank you @wolfboy8667 ! I'm glad that I have at least one fan on my side. This, to me, is not boring. It's a great dual.
@@smill1985 right, and honestly look if ratings are SO LOW that you need a pitch clock in the regular season, be my guest, but the new rules are ridiculous. 2 disengagements, 1 batter timeout, no shift, fielders can’t be on the grass, these are game altering rules, they don’t give a good taste in my mouth. The last thing is why do we need the new rules in the postseason? People are gonna watch anyway and a 4 hour postseason game is extra interesting not extra boring.
Watched this live. Couldn't believe my eyes. The Angel's broadcasters didn't make any mention of the record, and I was just sitting there like, "uhhh, at what point are they going to start mentioning that? Am I losing my mind?"
Noah McDaniel same lol... I was just hoping barria would win that battle and not give a homer
It's kinda weird because usually tv is throwing up any obscure record they can and then they miss a big one like this like wtf.
I love this video. 14 minutes of uninturrupted Kruk and Kuip.
I've read about some guy in Japan who purposely fouls off as many pitches as possible to wear down the opposing team's pitcher and this reminds me of that.
superdestructo no way cant predict where ball is going.thats whats fun about baseball. its a piker.chess match
lot's of pros or guys that play at high levels can foul off pitches on purpose
Pier, the best players have great batting eyes. They can more or less hit the ball where they want when they want, no matter what a pitcher does.
danman6669. true but they cannot predict where the ball going.they would have to have magic or some type of remote electronic ball.baseball is so fun and hitters can predict where the ball going but doesnt mean its going there.basketball. football.you throw ball to somebody but baseball you hit with a bat. and its hard to say where the ball going especially 21 at bats 16 foul balls..
Best thing ever since our last World Series win 😂😂😂😂😂
Hahaha yah you guys went from dominant to basement in an instant
@@patrickstar8077 yeah we got too much money on the books for what we get o if it and a trash farm system, prolly have to wait another 5-10 years to be dominant again 😥
Watch Manfred implement a 15 pitch limit rule for an at bat. “If the at-bat goes more than 15 pitches, the batter is awarded first base”. *The pace of play is too slow, gotta speed it up -_-*
Fastboy478 make it 10
So true, Manfred's concern about pace is getting excessive.
Fastboy478 its fun the way it is.the great american pastime.baseball players makes more money than other sports and have the best union.and its fun the way it is.lol
Nah, he'll just implement the Pitch Clock, which I'm all for. 21 pitches over 13 minutes is dumb
@@TeemoQuinton Do you realize how rare this is?
Great video. Watched multiple times already
I've been waiting my entire life for this.
Unbelievable atbat. Ive fallen in love with Brandon Belt all over again
Props to him tho for stayin alive
PickleJuicePlayz XD
Manfred is beside himself right now.
Dylan Sanborn so, you like Boston?
Dylan Sanborn "Manfred introduces new rule in which a batter is automatically struck out after ten pitches."
Ian don't give him ideas
@@muraddiab6393 LOL
What a great at bat. This is baseball. Belt is great.
JoJo337_ yes
I read about this on my ESPN app. This was amazing. Damn, Brandon.
That was so awesome to watch! Great battle!!!
Most productive at bat ever. If you can set up your team to get ahead by forcing the starting pitcher to throw 21 pitches, you set you team up for a starter that gets tired earlier in the game to help give your team something to hit. Nice work
Imagine you’re watching a ten minute long RUclips video and when the video ends, you say, “It’s still the same at bat?” Lol
That was simply amazing.
I like how the broadcasters and fans in attendance begin to slowly slowly realize that something strange is going on.
pAcE oF pLaY
To prevent time-wasting like this, all future MLB plate appearances will have a total pitch cap of ten pitches. If a plate appearance lasts for more than ten pitches, the batsman will be automatically given a home run, and all runners on base will score. The batsman will not be allowed to circle the bases however, as this is counterproductive to the nature of this measure. This initiative will not only serve to increase the pace of play, it will increase offense as well. Trials of this rule will be conducted during minor league games starting from 8/1/2018.
Nick Smith imagine if that was real.
Wumbo Jumbo agreed. That would be incredible.
They're going to make everyone sprint around the bases at Olympic speed after every homerun.
EclipseInID 2017 to be fair, pace of play has slowed down significantly in recent years
4:19 it is at this moment that the scoreboard operator could take his 10 min break
Belt is one of the hardest outs in the mlb. he's got a great eye and can foul off just about anything that isn't in the dirt or above his helmet. good player.
One of the greatest AB I've ever seen
This is amazing
A 21-pitch at bat, but also a 13-minute at bat. How long did this game go?
rla1000 baseball fun.lol
rla1000 if you dont like baseball dont watch it.baseball is a chess game . its like poker.to be good you have to be patient.it was like poker out there.it was fun to watch
Pier Louis He's not even complaining you twat
I can't believe I'm watching this instead of going outside and living!
Who’s here after Guillormes 22 pitch AB
He ruined Barria start
I know...wasn't it great. These pitchers are pulled after 70 to 80 pitches nowadays...forget about 100. This son of a bitch wasted a quarter of his start. The greatest, and I'm not even a Giants fan.
I don’t know who deserves more credit here. The batter staying alive for 21 pitches or the pitcher for throwing that many strikes.
"High, and deep, and if you guessed foul, you were right!"
no matter the outcome, that is a win!
Record legend
With all the souvenirs generated by that at bat, I wonder if they held on to the ball that got him out and sent it to Cooperstown.
20 pitches in... just steal 2nd already he’s rattled
I was just watching Gutierrez's 20-pitch at-bat two days ago! So weird.
I was just watching that before I came here. But I had watched this at-bat before.
The commentators are talking about the weather (sunny and warm)! They seem oblivious to the record. They finally mention it well after the fly-out. I could do that job.
And notice that the crowd is not into this at all. The crowd is fast asleep. Until pitch 15. But even then, it's not fun for anyone -- except the hitter.
lol every fan got a ball
Oprah style lol
I saw 14 minutes and I'm like, "I'm not watching this...." LOL
Great lesson for the kid. Looks like he might need to work on a strikeout pitch, but definitely looks like he has some good control to make Belt swing that much.
I always recommend the Splitter, sadly Pitching Coaches are stupid. "Oh it might make you lose Fastball velocity"
YEAH, if they hold the fourseam or two seam wrong!
If every batter on both teams did this, a 9 inning game would take 11 hours to complete.
leafyutube that would be Rob Manfred’s worst nightmare
@@theleftuprightatsoldierfieldGood, ha ha ha! 😝
This is the best routine out ever
I am still so impressed by Barria in this at bat. 21 years old, strike thrower, composed, battles for 21 straight pitches (with no outs in the first!) and wins the battle. 12 3-2 pitches!!! He's thinking this guy's the second batter and he's already ruining my chance at going deep in the game! Doesn't matter, just executes pitches, still worried about the runner on the 19th pitch! It's a shame the way the Angels jerked him around last year, should have been the 4th or 5th guy in the rotation on opening day. I really hope he makes their rotation this year.
I was at this game, even though it was a while ago, it was fun to watch
This is awsome
Wanna fix pace of play MLB? Ban Brandon Belt 😂😂😂
What a battle. Great at bat. Young baseball players... watch and learn. Don't be afraid of going 0-2.... learn to foul off pitches that are strikes but not your strikes...
What a battle!!!
God, I miss baseball
Finally pitcher win the battle
But at what cost... at.... what... cost!
This video had as many ad’s as Belt saw pitches.
Even though Belt went down that was the best at bat I have ever seen
Reminds me of Challenger League baseball.
Awesome!
I listened to Dave Fleming & John Miller call this on the radio as it happened.
I was there and I was straight up cackling!!!
We have a double header today, I kinda want to try this
I'm exhausted WATCHING.
At 6:00, the commentators start talking about the weather…
Imagine being at the game and you get up from your seat at the start of the at-bat, you go to the bathroom, wait in line for a hot dog, then get back to your seat and Brandon Belt is still at bat
We lost and it was sad but i got to see a mlb record for my birthday
Awesome
9:45 Belt is exactly the type of guy to say this
This is why we have the pitch clock now lol
Yea on second thought…maybe I like the pitch clock 😭😂
"Modern-day record?" Now I'm curious what the all-time record is. A 30-pitch AB in the 1850's?
We may never know, because they only began tracking at-bats (in terms of pitches thrown) in 1988 lol.
MLB footage is best
Never Give Up it is
So how much XP did he get from this AB?
Foul ball heaven!!!
He will have that record for a long time.
Imagine if in the end, Belt hit a Base Hit or even a Homer? How sad would that be for Barria.
The real question is, how long until MLB changes the rules for pace of play for foul balls?
"You're only allowed 4 foul strikes, the 5th is an out!"
If MLB does that, then they would've lost their DANG minds.
Funny to think about but I guess anything is possible these days. 😝
wow
15 mins x 27 x 2... during that AB, they were on pace for a 13.5 hour game, wowza.
Pretty impressive the pitcher didn't balk this at-bat
CHARLES NAGY is the Angels' pitching coach?! Well, no wonder. Anyone remember this call from 1997? "The 0-1 pitch. A LINER! OFF NAGY'S GLOVE! INTO CENTER FIELD! The Florida Marlins have won the World Series!"
The real meaning of battle at the plate lol
