- I own none of this video.
This is Bobby singing his underrated beauty, "Farewell." This performance was recorded on February 8, 1963, likely in the basement of the Gaslight Poetry Cafe in Greenwich Village, NYC. Bobby plays a 12-string guitar while another plays banjo and harmonizes.
I ripped this off of a clean copy of the famous Dylan bootleg "Seems Like A Freeze Out," pressed by TMQ in the early 70's. More tracks to come. Enjoy this gem while you can!
First heard this song in the movie Inside Llewyn Davis.
Me as well, it's my favorite movie. I learned every single song in the soundtrack even before I saw the movie. Haha.
Crazymelvis The movie was exceptional! Though sadly not many people recognize it.
@@SonHoang-qi9xq I wish more people know it, it was amazing.
Crazymelvis Yeah, me too.
JakeTAD me too. Great moment in the film.
Saw Llewyn Davis again, great deep movie
That’s why I’m here
@@BORISTIMUS i love folk music!
Bob really is an American treasure
Au revoir.
:)
Bob sings wonderfully here, not to say he doesn't otherwise. :)
exciting interpretation of this beautiful song, with a cough at the end
Oh it's fare thee well my darlin' true,
I'm leavin' in the first hour of the morn.
I'm bound off for the bay of Mexico
Or maybe the coast of Californ.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.
Oh the weather is against me and the wind blows hard
And the rain she's a-turnin' into hail.
I still might strike it lucky on a highway goin' west,
Though I'm travelin' on a path beaten trail.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.
I will write you a letter from time to time,
As I'm ramblin' you can travel with me too.
With my head, my heart and my hands, my love,
I will send what I learn back home to you.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.
I will tell you of the laughter and of troubles,
Be them somebody else's or my own.
With my hands in my pockets and my coat collar high,
I will travel unnoticed and unknown.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.
I've heard tell of a town where I might as well be bound,
It's down around the old Mexican plains.
They say that the people are all friendly there
And all they ask of you is your name.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind
Thank you, however you are - my life has been dedicated to Bob Dylan and every little gem I come across is appreciated!
The best version of this song
116 Macdougal St, February 8, 1963
There might not be flying cars but with songs, time travel will be.
That's two buildings down from mine.
Steve McQueen lived nearby?
best picture i know of him, real nostalgic for the times i had and will never have back thank you. last time i used this account i was in my mother's feeling real old
Much appreciated! First time I heard this was the Tony Rice studio version (from his "Cold On The Shoulder" Album). . . stunning! Like so many of those "sea-faring" folk tunes. . . it took me there!
Tears my heart apart...
Just listened to this 3 times, thank you, seems not to be right words or not quite enough to send appreciation for such a fine performance you share. I have liked/loved each one of the uploads SP... As always ps Good to be back around here, been a bit since I have spent time here
Great upload. Thanks
Thank you, truly an underrated masterpiece!!
robichaux73 you’re very welcome! Glad you enjoy it. It’s one of my favorite underrated Dylan songs :)
@@SwinginPig Keep 'em coming, I'll keep watching and listening!
The Leaving Of liverpool
Beautiful
never heard that third verse. thanks so much for this.
According to Wikipedia, this rendition of the song was recorded in the apartment of Gil Turner, a friend of Dylan's who worked at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village. The source of that is Happy Traum who is backing Dylan on banjo and harmonies. The version used in the Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis is from the Witmark publishing company demos. Even better is the one that appears on the film's soundtrack CD, definitely a studio recording. What's not clear is when. Dylan recorded Farewell once during the Freewheelin' sessions, four times for Times They Are a-Changin' and once for Another Side of Bob Dylan. My guess: the last of these, though it would take more research to settle the issue. Here's the RUclips link for soundtrack version: ruclips.net/video/jR-yPonzrKY/видео.html
thank you! the another side of bob dylan version is lost?
Top 10 Bob for me
Una cmposicion hermosa de sus tie.pos tempranos hermosamente sentimental ybella
Leaving Liverpool
Oh thanks you S.P
Loving it never listened before UsandoCANALHEIODAWIFE
he's coughing hahaha poor old bob
I don't think it's him but it's a bootleg and someone near to the recorder did
I played this to death from one of those white bootlegs back in the day. Always loved the cough
This is actually a cover of an Irish song called the leaving of Liverpool sang by The Clancy Brothers. Nice cover tho, Bob does it justice
🎶🎼⭐️
But the fantastic take of the Coens' movie was never included in any album or bootleg, was it?
No one plays Dylan like Dylan.....😶
Sounds to me the same as ruclips.net/video/SUDfsL_4OdY/видео.html Top 10 Bob for me since my bro' brought home a bootleg as kids. I believe it also included Percy's Song, Only a Hobo, Lay Down Your Weary Tune, Walls of Red Wing. A treasure.
Not really a Dylan song. This is a version of a 19th century folk song called ‘ The Leaving of Liverpool ‘. Great version nonetheless.
So you mean it's kinda like a folk song?
@@zgrad1 Yes . Very like the type of songs Dylan was writing at the time
Well i think he has changed a few of the Lyrics enough to make it a song with at least for me a completely new meaning. Definetly my favourite dylan song
@@mkarpe91 Fare thee well by Dink is completely different.
Actually wrote all the words to the verses, based the chorus on the leaving of Liverpool, but It’s not the same and Dylan’s Version is way better, and the melody is loosely based on the leaving of Liverpool.
Oh no corona virus!
Where do I put the capo here fellas
The right song to play for the 46th president's inauguration, and the departure of a forgettable four years...
Great early Dylan, but it's a ripoff of the Irish folk song Leaving of Liverpool, and he probably picked it up min the Village, where he hung out with the Dubliners and others. Play the Pogues' version of the folk song.
@@missaleromanum5614 exactly, you take an old folk song, you add some new verses, rearrange the melody a little bit and you become a folk artist, most of the songs from bob dylans first albums were old folk songs rearranged
@@golem3080 the same applies to all folk songs.
It’s actually British. Documented by an American. Recorded by Ewan MacColl, then all the Irish groups. So, it’s had quite a journey.
Dylan surely picked it up from the Clancy Brothers. His original lyrics and modifications to the chorus are truly wonderful things on their own, though.
Amateurs imitate, professionals steal
I agree with this
Amazing. Perfect
