Plus, with the US justice system more often siding with the offenders, it is up to individuals to prove their illness was from a recalled product. It takes a lot of time and money (doc visits, etc.) to gather such evidence. I doubt most people want to make such an investment when they prefer to puke/poop in their own home in between naps.

There have been some great documentaries documenting how industrial meat farming practices have a trickle affect on neighboring farms. Water doesn't respect fence lines. poisonous run off is a legit issue. It's also coming from lack of regs in processing areas. E coli is showing up in flour too from contaminated wheat or other grains seeding the mills with the bacteria thus spreading it to everything that goes through that mill.

I have to add my .02, as well. Last year I got so, so sick and wasn't getting any better. I finally went to see the doc who did some tests and gave me antibiotics. It turns out I had ecoli! It wasn't until about a month later that I discovered the salads I'd been eating from Walmart were under a recall. And so that drove home for me the need to grow my own greens. Incidentally, I discovered kale will grow year round here in my backyard garden and pests pretty much stay away from it. Thanks for bringing this subject up, so many people need to be more food aware now more than ever. God bless you both.
I love growing Kale, but we battle Aphids ALL the time. Grrr. We planted very few Fall/Winter crops this year too. We just needed a break after all the growing/canning for months on end. Lol
Thanks Deborah. I’m in Tasmania so even though I don’t particular like kale it will be good to have some fresh crunch in a side dish with a vinaigrette dressing. It gets so cold and wet here for many months now but with what Sarah and her husband are growing, sounds like it’s something I can copy.

My husband was diagnosed with hepatitis A in March from eating at a restaurant in Maryland. The health department hopped on the bandwagon and despite other cases, in our county, nothing was ever publicly declared. He spent 10 days in the hospital and is now fine, but it was a close call. Don’t expect the government to come clean on this stuff. I think they fear mass panic.
That is absolute fact. Many years ago, I had an opportunity to speak with the interim surgeon general after Mr. Koop retired about the risks involved with AIDS and their advice to use rubber dams in "intimate" situations. Not very practical, btw, and how the University of Spain did a study on the amount of blood in saliva before and after kissing. I was informed that they had seen that study, but didn't want to release that to the public here in the US due to creating widespread panic. I told her that I believe my fellow Americans are pretty smart when presented all the facts and I believe they can handle it. What a goat rope...🤨
Not sure what restaurant. We had to give the health department a complete list of every where we ate for one month. The goal was for them to get back to us after other people got sick and let us know. They refused to give us any info. I called and called them to no avail.
I love you are a protector of the animals. We are to be a keeper of the animals and I believe that includes their safety. We live and learn from the past. Once we see the cost of not growing it resets us to have that passion for growing for ourselves.

old trick use plastic drink bottles. like soda pop or water bottles. cut them in half use the cap end. leave the cap off. works as a mini greenhouse over single plants.. and your recycling single use plastic.
I just found this same info on line last week, so I immediately headed to Wal-Mart and bypassing the food I headed straight to the garden center for potting soil! Came home and started several different lettuce and radishes. Now it won't be long before I'm enjoying mine. I put together a quick small greenhouse with an a frame swing set frame and sheet plastic. Added a small fan heater for the night lows and walah, growing again! I love sprouts too! Tyfs this important information. Much Love and God bless.

I wash my basil ,let it dry and put in a bag and freeze them,then when I need it I just tack a chunk off and use it,it’s like having fresh basil,it will turn dark in the freezer and looks like it’s not good but when you cook with it ,it turns green again. Like fresh from the garden and I have been doing this for years
A friend of mine purees basil and puts just a bit of olive oil in it but freezes it in a little square silicone ice cube tray. The cubes are a bit smaller than normal cubes but then she pops them into good freezer bags and just takes them out frozen and they are all just the right size. You're right about the dark color but it looks green again in the sauce. I did finally grow quite a bit of basil this summer but i dried it this time around but I'm going to try your and her way of freezing tjem next summer. Have you tried doing it with mixed herbs and maybe garlic?
WOW, here in the UK. they have to put notices up. and its so rare it hits the news. We were shocked to find out about things that are allowed to be in your food. one person with e-coli is media worthy.
I also looked online awhile back to see if we were in the chicken recall zone. It was quite shocking to see all the recalls that we didn't even know about! We grow almost all our own vegetables but still buy a lot of meat but that's about to change! -Derek
I am parapligic and these programs are great..I grow up on a farm and and at 14 I milked our cow every day. Iworked on my grandparents farm for years.even though I am bed ride I am there helping. God bliss you and your farm.

Our work bought us all Thanksgiving dinners from a local spot. Out of 50 of us 40 got terrible food poisoning this year. You folks are definitely doing it the right way!

Yay, I love watching the ducks. It is my favorite part of your videos. Puts a smile on my face every day. I had some contaminated lettuce from Sams that I took back. We had bought it the previous week and Sams sent us an email letting us know. Pretty scary that we may have eaten it before we knew it was bad. Hugs❤️
I love you guys ! In your sprout salad you can thinly slice a peeled apple and it will give you a little sweet (not bitter) Taste and crunch. I add these to a regular salad to for a little unique flavor. Yum!

Enjoy your journey and your produce...I'd never thought of it before, but a couple of years ago, I came across a RUclips video growing CANTALOUPE inside.. he just got his wife's old nylons and put hooks in the wall where the actual melons were growing. Hung each a wee hammock to rest on, saving the vines from trying to support that weight. And himself a lot if mucky messes to clean up when the vines(invariably( gave out in their ability to support the growing weight of them! I thought it an interesting concept, but never quite got around to trying it. Although eith my adoration for the fruit, and rising costs everywhere...it may not be long before I DO!
Since there are 330 million people in the United States to be fed 66 people getting sick from lettuce is not such a big number. It is my opinion that finding contaminated food is terrific it is better than not finding it
If you think about all the food in the usa and all the restaurants etc. That's not that many problems with the millions of products made. We have to have perspective on things. Common sense has to be used. I'm not sure there is as much of that as there use to be. Not sure where that has gone. 🤔

I didn't realize how many items were recalled! It's funny how sprouting and sprouts are coming back into peoples awareness. I remember in the 80 the sprouting I did and sure do miss it. Thanks for reminding me. I'm gonna get me some seeds and do it again.

These recalls seem to have come out in just the last few years. I was a produce manager for years. We cleaned all leafy greens before they we were ever on the shelf. These things do not seem to be done any more. I am sorry if I offend anyone but I feel as though what is going on is domestic terrorism.

I have totally forgotten about sprouting till I watched this. #1 on my list to start today! Just heard about the Romaine recalled this morning. Scary! This is why growing your own food is SO important.
The media is always late with the news on recalls. Can’t rely on them. Some states require stores to post recalls. Usually near the front of the store.
The same thing happens unfortunately with people growing their own food. it just isn’t reported to the news media. One slip in preparation or storage can cause a problem. If the government found out every time someone got sick from homegrown or a farmers market they would make sure we couldn’t grow anything. With the store bought food, all it takes is finding a problem with a couple of packages countrywide they put out a recall. The difference between homegrown and store bought is you have more control as to how its process and no one will hear about the “flu” you thought you have. I totally support having your own garden and making sure YOUR food is safe.
Linda, many if not most of these recalls are from giant farms, and the contamination comes from the fact that the workers are out in the fields for 12+ hours with no bathrooms, no washing stations, etc. They are paid by the volume they harvest, so they do what they gotta do to relieve themselves. Human feces and dirty hands = e coli etc. At some point the public outcry and necessity will force these farms to change. Put in clean ways for workers to work, spending money and raising the price of produce. Growing your own is certainly the way to go.
Hello from Northern Ireland. Thank you for another good video. The food scares are crazy and I agree the only way to be sure what you put in your mouth is safe and wholesome is to grow it. I'm going to begin growing those little sprouts and micro greens and will sow a few things to have indoors for winter. I don't have a greenhouse and our winters can be snowy and icy and frosty. We also have a lot of very wet weather and our garden gets hit with a lot of gusty winds during winter. Pots and bowls of salad leaves and spinach will be ok inside on a window sill. I enjoy your videos and just found you and subscribed a few days ago. I've decided to try to get some _canning' jars and stuff so I can learn how to preserve our organic produce. And people wondered just why dairy farmers our Government were fighting about American dairy being sold up here? It's not just about supply and demand. Up here, a farmer can be charged if she allows someone to drink raw milk, even if there's a communal pitcher of it on the table during a meal! Guest drinks raw milk, gets sick, no one can *prove* it wasn't the milk. Yet everyone else is fine. Yup, gotta be that *raw milk* !🤦♀️🤯
Now add in the private well. It's at the point that many farmers are keeping bottled water on hand just for guests! And, if having company, a bag, or carton of storebought milk. Just in case.🤨🥜

The laws of 100 years ago made sense at that time because of the lack of refrigeration in those times. Today , good refrigeration is readily available and yet the old laws still apply. Why ? Because now the old laws are being used to prevent competition from the small dairy farmers. Why ? Because the small dairy farmers can provide real , undiluted milk. Some of us old codgers remember real milk. After my family moved from farm country into the city , we had to begin buying processed milk. At that time milk was only pasteurized. Then later on homogenized milk became available. For two cents extra per quart. And milk was delivered to our house ! And then.........someone in the milk processing business noticed that when milk is homogenized , you can no longer tell HOW MUCH cream there is in the milk ! Thus the birth of 4% " whole milk " . Most of the cream is REMOVED from milk to be sold as a separate product. Today most people accept homogenized milk as the standard , equating it with pasteurized milk. IT IS NOT THE SAME THING ! And it is also NOT whole milk ! Homogenized milk is chemically treated to cause the cream to be suspended in the milk ! Once suspended you can no longer SEE how much cream is in the milk. Although if you know the difference between raw milk or plain pasteurized milk and homogenized milk , you can taste the difference ! You can taste the cream in real whole milk. I've noticed also that it is VERY difficult to find any non-homogenized milk in a store. I have not seen any plain pasteurized milk for years now. And now you know why ! You have been and are being scammed now. 4% " whole milk " indeed ! Which means that only 4% of the original cream is left in the milk.
We bought some romaine lettuce at a Walmart, through their pickup service, my wife got some stomach issues and then we got a email notice from Walmart of the recall. We checked ours and it was from the farm in question. Had they not notified us we would have continued using it.
Romaine lettuce was recalled here in Canada as well. Very scary. I did return what I had for a refund but now I am more leary . Recalls are happening way to often in a variety of foods. I do plan to order some seeds for sprouting and think this would be a great way to get through winter months. I am not set up for much else. Thanks for sharing

Clearly something is broken in the system with how frequently food recalls have been cropping up. Industrial farming practices need an overhaul away from monoculture into a more permaculture model that reduces issues around disease to being in balance. Glad you guys were able to avoid exposure and everyone is healthy.
We started lettuce, spinach and kale inside . Plus parsley, basil and sage. Have to grow and with the scary stuff they are doing to our food I am trying to grow all we can. Wish I could do some meat chicken and egg chicken but the city where i live will not let it happen. So I keep saving and praying it is God's plan to get me out of her to the country with land. Get a Salad Spinner (I highly recommend the Oxo brand), and ALWAYS rinse your greens with some vinegar water, regardless of whether it's prewashed or not.

that is the question now isn't it? We're poisoning ourselves, our lands, our water and our air with toxins, chemicals, pesticides, vaccines... I don't think human beings are considered non-gmo or organic these days... i don't care if you claim to be vegan or whatever, unless you are strictly growing and eating everything from scratch (in a sterile facility) you got toxins in your body. We all do. Fluoride in the water, aluminum metal particles in the skies... u don't even wanna know what is in the meat filler items at taco bell.
And then... I heard my 42 yr old son counseling a younger coworker and “... yeah, that’s what my mom told me in high school and ya know? she was right.” Learning what he thought, and what he would change about his upbringing was an eyeopener. It is encouraging for those who have small spaces that we can still plant fresh vegetables in the winter, just indoors. I have been looking into growing microgreens recently and feel that that would be a good way to get fresh greens into my diet during the "off season"(or anytime). It's only from a specific area in California, where I live. our local Kroger now sources its lettuce from multiple Distributors and only pulled the Romaine that was affected
Actually the c.d.c. recalled all romaine lettuce from the U.S. because they cannot find where its coming from...our news in Ga released all this last Tuesday before Thanksgiving
Where was it grown? This time it was romaine grown in Salinas, California. The recall before was romaine raised in Yuma, Arizona. On my last shopping trip, the grocery had lettuce grown in Mexico. Based on what Richard said, probably best to check the CDC website. What a mess.
I have been watching for a few weeks. I am growing lettuce and cherry tomatoes. It is because of you. I chose an areo garden in my small living room. Oh and will and basil. Love your channel.
Food recalls means the system is WORKING not that there is something wrong with the system. For the amount of food that must be produced in USA in a month I'm surprised there were not more recalls than that. Agree bad show for Walmart not showing a food recall notice for food they had sold UNLESS it was only a precaution on their part and no specific recall had been issued on the product they had sold. A notice explaining the removal of the lettuce should have been posted in any case.
I have to agree. After working in a food processing plant, I know how rigorously tested everything is for these diseases. With all due respect, a lot of small producers around the country would not even know if their product was affected by one of these. The bacteria lurks EVERYWHERE. In the food safety business, there's a saying of it's not a matter of if you're going to find lysteria, it's a matter of when and where. But I'm all for growing your own food. We just can't get to thinking we're immune from having any of these issues.
Derek, some people use local farmers but how often is their food contaminated and how would they, or would they, initiate a recall. Have you heard or read any stories that this is and issue. When I buy from local farmer markets, I pay cash so there's no trail to contact me if there was a problem. Re recalls, last week I got an email from Sam's Club to toss spring mix I bought from them 2-3 days before. Sam's club refunded my money.
Watching this video when you mention the E. Coli in flour, I had to pause and do a quick Google search... I was absolutely heartbroken to find out that I had fed my sourdough starter with flour that had been recalled. I called my fiancee in tears! It was gifted to me from an old friend who lives 5000km away. The starter had come across the content with me, fed in eight different Canadian provinces and makes the most wonderfully complex bread! ...Imagine my relief and adrenaline when I find out fifteen minutes later that the flour recalled was only in the States and that brand in Canada is safe :') I feel so silly but SO thankful!! But, lesson learned! I'm going to make sure I dehydrate some of it and store it away just incase!! I highly recommend everyone attached to a starter does the same thing, just incase! The only way you can trust the food you're eating, is if you grow it yourself. Such a sad reality for those who have to rely on grocery store.
When you've just fed it and its nice and bubbly and fully expanded, spread it out on baking paper and leave to dry overnight (I put it in the turned-off oven to keep away draft and critters), when its dried just crunch it up into a powder and store in a clean air-tight container. When you need to revive it, feed it equal parts water and flour for two or three days, it should revive fully. I've done this before, and thankful I did as I once accidentally baked my active starter and killed it, thank goodness I had the dried stuff in storage to revive. I've dehydrated some more and put it away in storage now just incase I ever feed it E. Coli flour by accident.
I saw the recall on the local and national news I have not eaten lettuce for months. The recall has been gong on since September our food system is broken so glad I grow food. Take care be blessed.
When the pickers in the fields have to go to the bathroom, they simply go in the fields. They don’t have proper facilities and they don’t wash their hands. This is why I won’t eat lettuce or spinach that I haven’t grown myself.
Well thats just not true at all. I live in the lettuce capital and all the migrant pickers have portable toilet trailers. Im not saying that they all wash their hands or that they have the cleanest practices but lets not just start making stuff up.

Incidentally, I discovered kale will grow year round here in my backyard garden and pests pretty much stay away from it. Thanks Deborah. I’m in Tasmania so even though I don’t particular like kale it will be good to have some fresh crunch in a side dish with a vinaigrette dressing. It gets so cold and wet here for many months now but with what Sarah and her husband are growing, sounds like it’s something I can copy.

My husband was diagnosed with hepatitis A in March from eating at a restaurant in Maryland. The health department hopped on the bandwagon and despite other cases, in our county, nothing was ever publicly declared. He spent 10 days in the hospital and is now fine, but it was a close call. Don’t expect the government to come clean on this stuff. I think they fear mass panic.
That is absolute fact. Many years ago, I had an opportunity to speak with the interim surgeon general after Mr. Koop retired about the risks involved with AIDS and their advice to use rubber dams in "intimate" situations. Not very practical, btw, and how the University of Spain did a study on the amount of blood in saliva before and after kissing. I was informed that they had seen that study, but didn't want to release that to the public here in the US due to creating widespread panic. I told her that I believe my fellow Americans are pretty smart when presented all the facts and I believe they can handle it. What a goat rope...🤨

Not sure what restaurant. We had to give the health department a complete list of every where we ate for one month. The goal was for them to get back to us after other people got sick and let us know. They refused to give us any info. I called and called them to no avail.
I love you are a protector of the animals. We are to be a keeper of the animals and I believe that includes their safety.
We live and learn from the past. Once we see the cost of not growing it resets us to have that passion for growing for ourselves.

old trick use plastic drink bottles. like soda pop or water bottles. cut them in half use the cap end. leave the cap off. works as a mini greenhouse over single plants.. and your recycling single use plastic.

I just found this same info on line last week, so I immediately headed to Wal-Mart and bypassing the food I headed straight to the garden center for potting soil! Came home and started several different lettuce and radishes. Now it won't be long before I'm enjoying mine. I put together a quick small greenhouse with an a frame swing set frame and sheet plastic. Added a small fan heater for the night lows and walah, growing again! I love sprouts too! Tyfs this important information. Much Love and God bless.

I wash my basil ,let it dry and put in a bag and freeze them,then when I need it I just tack a chunk off and use it,it’s like having fresh basil,it will turn dark in the freezer and looks like it’s not good but when you cook with it ,it turns green again. Like fresh from the garden and I have been doing this for years
A friend of mine purees basil and puts just a bit of olive oil in it but freezes it in a little square silicone ice cube tray. The cubes are a bit smaller than normal cubes but then she pops them into good freezer bags and just takes them out frozen and they are all just the right size. You're right about the dark color but it looks green again in the sauce.
I did finally grow quite a bit of basil this summer but i dried it this time around but I'm going to try your and her way of freezing tjem next summer.

WOW, here in the UK. they have to put notices up. and its so rare it hits the news. We were shocked to find out about things that are allowed to be in your food. one person with e-coli is media worthy.
Contaminants aren’t allowed, that’s why there are recalls!
I also looked online awhile back to see if we were in the chicken recall zone. It was quite shocking to see all the recalls that we didn't even know about! We grow almost all our own vegetables but still buy a lot of meat but that's about to change! -Derek

Enjoy your journey and your produce...I'd never thought of it before, but a couple of years ago, I came across a RUclips video growing CANTALOUPE inside.. he just got his wife's old nylons and put hooks in the wall where the actual melons were growing. Hung each a wee hammock to rest on, saving the vines from trying to support that weight. And himself a lot if mucky messes to clean up when the vines(invariably( gave out in their ability to support the growing weight of them! I thought it an interesting concept, but never quite got around to trying it. Although eith my adoration for the fruit, and rising costs everywhere...it may not be long before I DO!

Since there are 330 million people in the United States to be fed 66 people getting sick from lettuce is not such a big number. It is my opinion that finding contaminated food is terrific it is better than not finding it
If you think about all the food in the usa and all the restaurants etc. That's not that many problems with the millions of products made. We have to have perspective on things. Common sense has to be used. I'm not sure there is as much of that as there use to be. Not sure where that has gone. 🤔

These recalls seem to have come out in just the last few years. I was a produce manager for years. We cleaned all leafy greens before they we were ever on the shelf. These things do not seem to be done any more. I am sorry if I offend anyone but I feel as though what is going on is domestic terrorism.

I have totally forgotten about sprouting till I watched this. #1 on my list to start today! Just heard about the Romaine recalled this morning. Scary! This is why growing your own food is SO important.
The media is always late with the news on recalls. Can’t rely on them. Some states require stores to post recalls. Usually near the front of the store.
The same thing happens unfortunately with people growing their own food. it just isn’t reported to the news media. One slip in preparation or storage can cause a problem. If the government found out every time someone got sick from homegrown or a farmers market they would make sure we couldn’t grow anything. With the store bought food, all it takes is finding a problem with a couple of packages countrywide they put out a recall. The difference between homegrown and store bought is you have more control as to how its process and no one will hear about the “flu” you thought you have. I totally support having your own garden and making sure YOUR food is safe.
Linda, many if not most of these recalls are from giant farms, and the contamination comes from the fact that the workers are out in the fields for 12+ hours with no bathrooms, no washing stations, etc. They are paid by the volume they harvest, so they do what they gotta do to relieve themselves. Human feces and dirty hands = e coli etc. At some point the public outcry and necessity will force these farms to change. Put in clean ways for workers to work, spending money and raising the price of produce. Growing your own is certainly the way to go.

Hello from Northern Ireland. Thank you for another good video. The food scares are crazy and I agree the only way to be sure what you put in your mouth is safe and wholesome is to grow it. I'm going to begin growing those little sprouts and micro greens and will sow a few things to have indoors for winter. I don't have a greenhouse and our winters can be snowy and icy and frosty. We also have a lot of very wet weather and our garden gets hit with a lot of gusty winds during winter. Pots and bowls of salad leaves and spinach will be ok inside on a window sill. I enjoy your videos and just found you and subscribed a few days ago. I've decided to try to get some _canning' jars and stuff so I can learn how to preserve our organic produce. And people wondered just why dairy farmers our Government were fighting about American dairy being sold up here? It's not just about supply and demand. Up here, a farmer can be charged if she allows someone to drink raw milk, even if there's a communal pitcher of it on the table during a meal! Guest drinks raw milk, gets sick, no one can *prove* it wasn't the milk. Yet everyone else is fine. Yup, gotta be that *raw milk* !🤦♀️🤯
Now add in the private well. It's at the point that many farmers are keeping bottled water on hand just for guests! And, if having company, a bag, or carton of storebought milk. Just in case.🤨🥜

One big reason for that is the large dairy companies do not want to have additional competition from the small dairy farmers ! The laws of 100 years ago made sense at that time because of the lack of refrigeration in those times. Today , good refrigeration is readily available and yet the old laws still apply. Why ? Because now the old laws are being used to prevent competition from the small dairy farmers. Why ? Because the small dairy farmers can provide real , undiluted milk.
Some of us old codgers remember real milk. After my family moved from farm country into the city , we had to begin buying processed milk. At that time milk was only pasteurized. Then later on homogenized milk became available. For two cents extra per quart. And milk was delivered to our house ! And then.........someone in the milk processing business noticed that when milk is homogenized , you can no longer tell HOW MUCH cream there is in the milk ! Thus the birth of 4% " whole milk " . Most of the cream is REMOVED from milk to be sold as a separate product.
Today most people accept homogenized milk as the standard , equating it with pasteurized milk. IT IS NOT THE SAME THING ! And it is also NOT whole milk ! Homogenized milk is chemically treated to cause the cream to be suspended in the milk ! Once suspended you can no longer SEE how much cream is in the milk. Although if you know the difference between raw milk or plain pasteurized milk and homogenized milk , you can taste the difference ! You can taste the cream in real whole milk. I've noticed also that it is VERY difficult to find any non-homogenized milk in a store. I have not seen any plain pasteurized milk for years now. And now you know why ! You have been and are being scammed now. 4% " whole milk " indeed ! Which means that only 4% of the original cream is left in the milk.
This is main reason I started my garden. Plus it tastes so much better
We bought some romaine lettuce at a Walmart, through their pickup service, my wife got some stomach issues and then we got a email notice from Walmart of the recall. We checked ours and it was from the farm in question. Had they not notified us we would have continued using it.

Romaine lettuce was recalled here in Canada as well. Very scary. I did return what I had for a refund but now I am more leary . Recalls are happening way to often in a variety of foods. I do plan to order some seeds for sprouting and think this would be a great way to get through winter months. I am not set up for much else.

Clearly something is broken in the system with how frequently food recalls have been cropping up. Industrial farming practices need an overhaul away from monoculture into a more permaculture model that reduces issues around disease to being in balance. Glad you guys were able to avoid exposure and everyone is healthy.

Wish I could do some meat chicken and egg chicken but the city where i live will not let it happen. So I keep saving and praying it is God's plan to get me out of her to the country with land. that is the question now isn't it? We're poisoning ourselves, our lands, our water and our air with toxins, chemicals, pesticides, vaccines... I don't think human beings are considered non-gmo or organic these days... i don't care if you claim to be vegan or whatever, unless you are strictly growing and eating everything from scratch (in a sterile facility) you got toxins in your body. We all do. Fluoride in the water, aluminum metal particles in the skies... u don't even wanna know what is in the meat filler items at taco bell.
And then... I heard my 42 yr old son counseling a younger coworker and “... yeah, that’s what my mom told me in high school and ya know? she was right.” Learning what he thought, and what he would change about his upbringing was an eyeopener. It is encouraging for those who have small spaces that we can still plant fresh vegetables in the winter, just indoors. I have been looking into growing microgreens recently and feel that that would be a good way to get fresh greens into my diet during the "off season"(or anytime). It's only from a specific area in California, where I live. our local Kroger now sources its lettuce from multiple Distributors and only pulled the Romaine that was affected

Where was it grown? This time it was romaine grown in Salinas, California. The recall before was romaine raised in Yuma, Arizona. On my last shopping trip, the grocery had lettuce grown in Mexico. Based on what Richard said, probably best to check the CDC website. What a mess.

Food recalls means the system is WORKING not that there is something wrong with the system. For the amount of food that must be produced in USA in a month I'm surprised there were not more recalls than that.
Agree bad show for Walmart not showing a food recall notice for food they had sold UNLESS it was only a precaution on their part and no specific recall had been issued on the product they had sold. A notice explaining the removal of the lettuce should have been posted in any case.
I have to agree. After working in a food processing plant, I know how rigorously tested everything is for these diseases. With all due respect, a lot of small producers around the country would not even know if their product was affected by one of these. The bacteria lurks EVERYWHERE. In the food safety business, there's a saying of it's not a matter of if you're going to find lysteria, it's a matter of when and where. But I'm all for growing your own food. We just can't get to thinking we're immune from having any of these issues.
Derek, some people use local farmers but how often is their food contaminated and how would they, or would they, initiate a recall. Have you heard or read any stories that this is and issue. When I buy from local farmer markets, I pay cash so there's no trail to contact me if there was a problem. Re recalls, last week I got an email from Sam's Club to toss spring mix I bought from them 2-3 days before. Sam's club refunded my money.

Watching this video when you mention the E. Coli in flour, I had to pause and do a quick Google search... I was absolutely heartbroken to find out that I had fed my sourdough starter with flour that had been recalled. I called my fiancee in tears! It was gifted to me from an old friend who lives 5000km away. The starter had come across the content with me, fed in eight different Canadian provinces and makes the most wonderfully complex bread!
...Imagine my relief and adrenaline when I find out fifteen minutes later that the flour recalled was only in the States and that brand in Canada is safe :') I feel so silly but SO thankful!! But, lesson learned! I'm going to make sure I dehydrate some of it and store it away just incase!!
I highly recommend everyone attached to a starter does the same thing, just incase! The only way you can trust the food you're eating, is if you grow it yourself. Such a sad reality for those who have to rely on grocery store.

When you've just fed it and its nice and bubbly and fully expanded, spread it out on baking paper and leave to dry overnight (I put it in the turned-off oven to keep away draft and critters), when its dried just crunch it up into a powder and store in a clean air-tight container. When you need to revive it, feed it equal parts water and flour for two or three days, it should revive fully.
I've done this before, and thankful I did as I once accidentally baked my active starter and killed it, thank goodness I had the dried stuff in storage to revive. I've dehydrated some more and put it away in storage now just incase I ever feed it E. Coli flour by accident.
I saw the recall on the local and national news I have not eaten lettuce for months. The recall has been gong on since September our food system is broken so glad I grow food. Take care be blessed.
When the pickers in the fields have to go to the bathroom, they simply go in the fields. They don’t have proper facilities and they don’t wash their hands. This is why I won’t eat lettuce or spinach that I haven’t grown myself.

Well thats just not true at all. I live in the lettuce capital and all the migrant pickers have portable toilet trailers. Im not saying that they all wash their hands or that they have the cleanest practices but lets not just start making stuff up.

@@elizabethjohnson8269 but that's the point isn't it? Ecoli happens because our pickers are not washing their hands and probably also at times urinating and defecating in the fields. Its not made up, unfortunately....
It's very evident y'all have been married for a while and tell stories together. The passing of the story back and forth is seamless
