Just thought that I would also mention that i also designed and built a very handy and valuable chicken/rabbit tractor. It raised up and down on an old pair of wheelchair wheels for easy moving. It housed rabbits on the top floor and chickens on the bottom. It fit between the rows in my narrow-rowed gardens. The chickens took care of all the between row weeding and the rabbits AND chickens took care of the fertilizing. None of the animal waste ever got on the produce directly either! Worked wonderfully!
@TheWhitetailrancher that sounds like a great idea. What are the dimensions? How many rabbits and chickens does it hold? I love how people experiment and do things that are new. Blessings.
You guys are awesome! I am 74 years old and am living vicariously through you! Would of loved to live this way.. God knows what home I want in Heaven. Can't wait!! Until then, love watching you guys

Just found this channel and holy cow, you all are almost 100% self supportive with your food supply. I love it. I only do cows and may get some pigs pretty soon . I had chickens and turkeys but the predators ate them too fast to make it worth while. Cattle are social animals and really need other cows around. They get attached to the other herd mates. I guess the goats provide that for Hope right now. This is my new favorite channel and cant wait for Hope's new baby calf !
Always a joy to watch your goodness and dedication to raising your crops and animals. Best wishes, w/ peace and good health and safety for you, your family, and animals!
The best harvest I've ever gotten with potatoes is planting them in a pile of compost on top of the ground and then covering with old hay. No weeds...no digging...no watering. Mulch has changed everything for us. HUGE harvests. Tons of mulch also does wonders for hard soil.
That's the same method we use, here in the Ozark mountains, but we use broken down straw. Purchase it in the fall, add bone meal, water it thoroughly and allow it to break down all winter. Come spring we pull it apart and put the potatoes on top of the laid down straw. Then top it off with more straw all summer and we get huge yields.
@Aida A we didn't have an issue with mold at all. A few things sprouted in the straw but that's not a big deal. You don't have to water too much as the straw holds in a lot of moisture.
When the calf is born make sure you and your family get a little of the 1st milk as this has strong medicinal qualities ( stocks your immune system ) Loved seeing all the animals

Hi Kevin and lady wife. Greetings from Ireland . So Good to watch your video,s. I am a DIY person but must admit that you are brill at explaining your creative design,s with all your projects. We here used to grow one acre of potatoes and I remember my dad splitting potatoes in half with no growth output concerns. If you sow large potatoes you will find you will get more plant growth however the potatoes underneath the soil will be more but very small . Love watching your videos and especially about your quail.

You should find that the spuds that you left whole will produce more potatoes and the ones that you cut will be less potatoes but bigger. Another great video.
Hi there. Your second bed of potatoes is doing better because of the black covering. The soil is warmer. Thing's are looking great on the homestead. Stay safe and healthy. God bless
Sometime, try tractor tire potato planting. You plant the potato and as the plant grows, keep adding soil to mound them. When ready to harvest, pull the tire up, turn it over and there are your potatoes. Easy and productive use of space.
Picked up my new chicks this morning... a mixed batch. Haven't had a flock in about three years and have missed the joy of chickens. Thank you for re-inspiring me to get my little homestead up and running again. The new greenhouse went up last weekend and is slowly being filled with all the veggie seedlings that are in the house...have to be careful here in Maine, if you aren't happy with the weather, wait a minute and it will change. Anyway guys, you are my youtube children and I wish all good things for you and your family. God Bless.
just found this off Facebook...Hold them upside down by their feet, the hens will curl up toward your hand and the rooster will stay down and not curl up, I’ve had chickens for many years and this is something an older farmer taught me, it has been proven to be correct
@Jeanette Georgiadis because they move them everyday or so like a tractor. They pick up one end and move it the length of the tractor so the animals have fresh clean area everytime they move it
Hi Kevin and Sarah, I have seen a friend of my in-laws planted potatoes in hay. just place the potato barely in the ground and cover with a layer of hay. then as the plant grows, keep adding hay. No digging when harvesting, just pull back the hay, and there the potatoes are. Also try planting sunflowers along the edge of your corn bed. Take care ...m.

My question on the ground cover.......when harvesting the potatoes....they come up in a good sized clump of soil and potatoes, are the holes in the ground cover going to allow for that?
@@kimdewbre8859 they will probably do like they've done in the past and remove the ground cover before they harvest the potatoes. By the time of harvest all the greenery dies back and the row cover just gets pulled up and off then they gently dig out the potatoes.
Gosh, it’s all go on the Homestead ! Its great to see your woven fabric working so well for the potatoes 🥔 and onions 🧅, I see so many people struggling with weeds....why isn’t everyone doing this?🤔

We have the exact same problem with weed growth. And animal issues too. However, we have to fence every garden because of deer . Our herds are huge and they will eat everything in their paths. Thanx for all the great info. Nice to know we are not the only ones.... for awhile it sure felt like it . Kudos to you for putting perches in for those chicks. The gardens are really looking great. I have raised beds 2 little ones 4 x 8 on Legs so they are waist high. Much easier for me at 81. I have some beets, red and green bell peppers, snap peas, tomatoes and parsley. In large bins I have Yukon Gold potatoes and a russet potato. I am praying for a good yield, this is my 3rd. try. Last year crows ate everything.
Sarah & Kevin, thank you for the update on the homestead. Seeing the livestock is such a blessing. Looking forward to seeing what you are going to be doing with the quail. You are such a blessing and a source on inspiration to so many of us. We just started prepping the gardens this past Sunday. Looking very much forward to trying the square foot gardening method this year. God Bless, Rob Schroeder (Rockford MI)
I love feeding the animals with you all in the morning.. I live in town so unable to have any farm animals. Growing up on a farm I know the enjoyment animals bring.. Big hugs Thanks for sharing.
For you potatoes make sure you use either straw or more dirt around each potatoes as they grow taller. A mound around each potato will produce more potatoes if you keep a mound and keep building the mounds higher as the potato grows. Potato farmers plant their potatoes on top of the beds and keep pulling the dirt up onto the top of the bed. So just pull the excess between each plant. you can use straw to help build the beds higher. I hope you have great luck with your potatoes.
Wow the baby chicks sure are growing up fast. I'm going to try onions like that maybe not untill next season, life through me a punch that I knew was coming I just didn't know when( my mom went to be with Jesus) have other thing to do right my summer garden has to wait for now. Totally enjoyed your video, God bless
We have a Mr. Piggles. He is a big Kune Kune with tusks and will sit and roll over. He was taken in from a family who had a change in circumstances, so we promised to give him a “forever” home. We have raised Kune Kune and AGH for meat. Hope to raise to more pork in the future. We also have dairy goats, rabbits, broilers, layers, ducks, and growing. The focus is on more garden space and paddocks right now. Thanks
I was thinking the other day about how your potatoes were doing. I am doing golden Yukon potatoes in buckets and I did the whole potato in the bucket and had added dirt until 1 inch from top and added mulch and they are sitting in the garden next to the new raised bed. Illinois weather hasn't been nice enough to plant in garden yet. Our greenhouse is over flowing with starts from seeds. Love seeing all the animals and of course the gardens! Thank you for sharing !
One of the things I found that worked super for me last potato season was to plant the potatos into small pots (14cm or 5") until the shoots are about 100mm or 4" tall (they don't need watering till after they have started to shoot) . This way you can get them started earlier and keep them away from the frost as well as you don't end up with any blank spaces. Heavy mulch after you plant them out..., no weeds and HEAPS of potatoes.
Thank you, as I really like your videos. Wish it were possible to go back some years and experience it all myself. I was raised on the farm when young, but in 1956 at 17 yrs, old I went into the service and never went back.
My wife and I both enjoy your videos! We only have an acre and 1/2. We have a pony, mini donkey, chickens ducks 2 geese and 2 mini goats. I would like to add a couple pigs and find your info very helpful. Wife enjoys the canning as well as I do. Thank you so much for hours of entertaining info.
Would love if you did a video on all the spacing for different veggies In the fabric. This is my first year with fabric and your videos make it very manageable. All spacing in one video would be very helpful. :)
Hi Kevin and Sarah, I been meaning to ask, why do not the ducks fly away? Are their wings clipped so they cannot fly? As you can tell I am not used to farming..lol. The newer egg-laying chicks are getting so big and so fast. I am anxious as you folks to see how many roosters vs hens develop. Great show you have I watch everyday thank you and God bless.
Robert Petrowski , Most domestic breeds of duck do not fly. They usually can only skitter along a couple of inches off the ground. Much the same way as chickens.
beautiful bunnies and the pigs look great . great day at the homestead . Hope looks wonderful I hope she has no Problems with her baby . I watch another channel called the big family homestead they woke up yesterday to a dead cow and unborn calf . God bless .

Hello from Arkansas. I'm behind on watching your videos a little bit. BUT ... Great information on here. Thanks for all y'all do for the rest of us. Far as myself I look up to your channel. I've learned so much and have brought back memories of my childhood on our family farm In white county Arkansas. I even canned my first chicken thanks to Sara. Y'all have a blessed and super day.

Thanks for all of the great ideas! We can learn alot from you guys :)
Amen!
Thanks
I really Loved this video!! I liked the length of it too... Didn't feel rushed... Thank you for all you share.

A great common sense couple... Love the common sense approach.
and Welcome to the Organic Craftworks fam
That is the neatest and cleanest pig pen I have ever seen! You have a great farm-homestead; congratulations.
Thank you, as I really like your videos. Wish it were possible to go back some years and experience it all myself. I was raised on the farm when young, but in 1956 at 17 yrs, old I went into the service and never went back.
Love your videos and thank you for sharing God bless
My wife and I both enjoy your videos! We only have an acre and 1/2. We have a pony, mini donkey, chickens ducks 2 geese and 2 mini goats. I would like to add a couple pigs and find your info very helpful. Wife enjoys the canning as well as I do. Thank you so much for hours of entertaining info.
Also gonna order some of the fabric u use
Would love if you did a video on all the spacing for different veggies In the fabric. This is my first year with fabric and your videos make it very manageable. All spacing in one video would be very helpful. :)
That would be nice. First year I’ve gotten it.
Space the same as you would without the ground cover. Spacing recommendations for most varieties is on the seed packet.
Hope this helps.
this is pure gold, I plan to do the same thing, we are looking for land in New York, I wish I could move to Missouri
The breeds of ducks we have don’t fly. They are runner ducks.
Robert Petrowski ,
Most domestic breeds of duck do not fly. They usually can only skitter along a couple of inches off the ground. Much the same way as chickens.
Awesome Videos. Thank you for sharing
