Interesting, I will test this in my hen house. The floor gets to cold for a water bucket when the temperature goes down under negative 15-20 C/59-68 F and we often have down to negative 30-40 C on and off during a couple of month. What if you put a floating ball or something inside the water? So that when animals drink they will move it around and maybe keep it from freezing on top for a longer time. Also the wind could blow it around and keep it moving... could be an interesting experiment

Cold water freezes faster. Think about the fact that it takes some amount of time to bring the temperature of the hot water down to the starting temperature of the cold water. However long it takes for the cold water to freeze, it will take the hot water that amount of time plus the time it takes for the hot water to be brought down to the starting temperature of the cold water.
Thank you so much for this. I’m near Canada and winter is always a concern but I’m not good with electronic things. So the passive heating and something that’s easy to fill and will put up with ducks trying to tip it over is helpful.

Good morning from Florida, a couple of things to think about, the black tire will hold the cold temps letting it get much colder. Also the plain bowl of water was sitting on the frozen ground, try doing it with straw under it. When I was a kid back in New Jersey we used to drain my parents hot water heater ( twice 50 gallons each time ) to fill a small ice skating rink in our back yard and also added hose water it was frozen by the next morning with temps in the mid twenties over night. Good luck with your project.
You could use geothermal heating by digging that tire in the ground and under that a 4 foot hole which allows the earth to warm up the water. Another suggestion you can put foam and a rubber top on with a 4-6 inch hole in the top which also helps with keeping the heat in. I don’t remember whos video I watch with this but it worked well.
Interesting test, Al. We had -1 degrees F here in Maine, but I run a heat lamp over my chicken water when it is supposed to be 10 degrees or colder. Blessings to you all.
I’m on my 3rd heated water setup for my chickens, they only last a year or two, I’ve never tried this method because I assumed it was based on the sun warming the black tire and bowl and my chickens water is in the covered run that’s enclosed on 3 sides so it don’t get the sun shining on it, I think I’ll have to pick up some spray foam and a rubber bowl from the farm store and try it for myself, I’m sure I’ve got a pile of junk tires around here somewhere.
Since most heat escapes from the top of an object, a peice of foam board lid, that covers 3/4 of the surface area, would still allow access to the water for the animals, while delaying the inevitable freeze by perhaps many more hours. Also, a deeper pan would provide more thermal mass and perhaps slow the cool as well.
People put hot water in ice trays not because they will freeze faster, but because the ice will become clear. Boiling the water removes the air dissolved in it, producing clear ice as a result.
I’m always looking for new ways to keep my animal waterers thawed without buying heated waterers. I work at a hardware store and have lots of old tires saved. I see a new project in my future to try this idea. Thanks.
to be fair, the video is exactly what you said. but I'd adjust your goals to get a better result. there's PLENTY of ways and I live in a frigid environment much colder than where that is. it won't be room temp as the lows here get in the single digits very often but certainly can keep it above 50 zero problems. different layers of varying insulation is key.
Would be interesting to see warm vs cold, would need to do them all at the same time under the same conditions. I am also glad to see Olivia finally found a good food combination, our boys love peanut butter and banana, well really peanut butter and anything else!
I need to find those rubber pans in smaller sizes for all my rabbits!! I have the plastic crocks from Tractor Supply. I fill them up 2, sometimes 3 times a day and they work really great, but I am afraid the plastic will be too brittle during the really cold temps. I used to fill up a 5 gallon water cooler jug with hot water from the tap in the house but today I picked up a 16 gallon heated horse watering bucket. That thing is nice!! It beats lugging 5 gallons from the house to the shop. Now its a 3 gallon jug walking 30 feet. As for the hot water vs cold water freezing test, I remember hearing that hot water freezes first. I think it has something to do with the minerals in the water. When we get goats and chickens I will definitely be using your waterer idea! Great job and thanks for sharing. Oh, watching your meal prep at midnight is no bueno...now I want to get out of bed and into the kitchen to cook something up! Ugh.
I did some reading on hot water freezing before cold. Because the hot water is losing some of its volume to condensation in the air (steam) the volume becomes less and with less volume, it will freeze faster. I would imagine its just marginally faster though.
Hot water freezes faster because, it has fewer gases dissolved within in it. Purer water freezes faster. That's why, when you freeze distilled water, it not only freezes faster but, the resulting ice has no frozen gas bubbles suspended within it. If you conduct your experiment, I would suggest using distilled water, as a third comparison against your hot and cold tap water. The quantity of gas bubbles in suspension within each resulting set of ice cubes should prove the point, if I'm correct.
Good morning. Yes please do the cold/warm water freezing test. I have a nickel that says cold water freezes faster. Received my solar powered jar lights yesterday, really cool, really happy with them. Thanks for the tip
Hot water is less dense than cold water thus it will freeze quicker than cold water that being said the open air waterier will freeze up first or should before the tire
Oh! That'd be a fun addition to the farm, a hedgehog! lol Figaro would have a blast with it, I bet! Thanks for the idea for the chicken waterer using old tires- I'm definitely going to be doing that this weekend with an old oil pan I have lying around.
My emergency water bottles sitting on the floor in the house froze solid. We went down to below 0 fahrenheit. Unusual this time of year for Kentucky. Diesn't usualky hapoen until mid-January.
The good thing about having snow on the ground...the goats and chickens (if there out) can just take a nice bite of snow....19 degrees here in NC last night....chilly!!!
Use a fish tank bubble filter thing, sorry no idea what it's called , it can run off a battery . Just insulate the battery pk , the moving water stops it from freezing
Although it may seem counterintuitive (all other variables being equal), hot water does indeed freeze faster than cold water because warm water evaporates rapidly and since this is an endothermic process, it cools the water making it freeze more quickly.
Love to see the h/c water test. You could set up a saw horse and plywood off the sliding door. 1 it's on the north side so less sun on it. 2 you could set up time lapse camera in nice warm house.
I wonder if you construct a plexiglass box around the tire/bowl with hole on the sides so the goats can drink. I think the plexiglass may create a green house affect and make the water a bit warmer . Just a thought.
thermodynamics, it actually requires more energy to go from liquid to solid (over the point of just liquid to boiling). ∴ delaying the time helps refrain the crystallization. worth the insulation. if needed a little of dissolved mineral and ACV may help also, as will lower the freeze point
Pond in Hebrew is reflection like seeing yourself in a pond and going away and forgetting what you look like n this is why we ponder on things n memorize n pray so that we don’t forget.
Of course the one that's sitting directly on the ice is going to cool down and freeze faster then the one that sitting off the ground and in the tire insulated
Robert, he knows the insulated water container will take longer to freeze. The experiment was to find out how much longer it will take to freeze to give him an idea how long the animals would have access to water.
@@scottprice8994 yes I know but where the animals are there's hay on the floor there's a difference that's why I mentioned it if you were going to do an experiment you would do it in the exact of environment as the animals
@@robertsantiago4329 -- This was mostly done to satisfy curiosity. If the water containers were in with the animals, the animals would be drinking the water. Again, that would change the results of the experiment. This is not a university science experiment. I thought it was a fun experiment.

Hmmm wondering if the tire pocket rim is stuffed with dense manure, wil it work to insulate and release warmth to keep water liquid. I'm very curious about this tire hack. Thanks.
As a mass hot water will freeze slower because it has to loose that heat to get down to freezing temperature. If sprayed into the air the not water will freeze faster because it requires some heat to transition from water to ice.
Great idea for the waters. We make our hamburger- salsbury steaks with mushrooms gravey. They are a staple on our farm table. I make them with fresh ground pork too.
Mpemba Effect. My dad had a old rental property and when it got real cold the pipes would freeze and it was always the hot water pipes. I’m sick of Wisconsin winters
Try your test in Wyoming, where I am told, it gets down to 15 or 20 or more below zero and see if you still have water or if you, on the other hand, could actually “walk on water“without being divine!
I think the tire water well freeze faster by a longshot say 30% faster because of it being warmer more of it will evaporate and there will be less to freeze.
Hot water freezing faster comes from old fashioned refrigerators where the evaporator (the part that gets cold) formed the bottom of the freezing compartment, and metal ice cube trays. A tray filled with hot water would melt through the frost and sit directly on the evaporator thus getting cooled directly by conduction to the cold metal evaporator while the tray with cold water sat on the somewhat insulating frost and was mainly cooled by air. If you do the experiment with the trays only cooled by air the cold water freezes first as logic suggests.
Here's another clue: No commercial ice machine or ice plant starts with hot water. Instead they pre-chill the incoming water with the cold water that's draining.
Found you from Jeff at Bobblehead Homestead, he suggested this video for water freezing. It doesn't get that cold down here thank God, but our water for animals does freeze sometime thanks for the tip.
In the forties a nd fifties, before frost free freezers on refrigerators, there would be a buildup of ice on the shelf where the ice tray sat. If you put hot water in hour ice tray, it would melt y the tray down into the ice on the shelf, bringing it more into contact t with cold surfaces all around. I have no research, just the thoughts of a 70 yr old gramma. Really enjoy your channel!
The insulated water dishes look to be working well for you. As for 10 years...the important question is where do you want to take the farm. Are you wanting to raise animals or plants. Interesting question and how you make your income is dependent on the choice you make. Stay warm.
In the frozen north they chuck a glass of hot water into the frosty air to get the instant crystal effect . . . that's the reason I think hot water freezes quicker?
Are there solar heaters for feeders? I'm needing to get some for my hummingbirds. They hang around in winter and it snows here !! I am going to get my husband to make me a chicken water holder like that. It is such a pain when the water hose is frozen and the animal water is frozen.
Wish i could see the snowy trees and sparkles in the snow...its another lovely side of nature's beauty..I admire the snow but couldn't stand those cold temperatures I get cold easily...Good dinner!🍲🍲🍲
You have manure why not use it and make hot boxes like they do to start plants outside in late winter.
my husband did something like you made for our chickens and calves here in Montana. works great and doesn't freeze
Also, the goats water has a smaller surface and is deeper.
What's Troy up to? HaHa
Looking at Diytube.video I suppose!!
Watch his videos and you will know as much as I do.
Hmmm wondering if the tire pocket rim is stuffed with dense manure, wil it work to insulate and release warmth to keep water liquid. I'm very curious about this tire hack. Thanks.
Yes try the test please. Be neat to see rather than read results. Hi from Florida!
The snow was really sparkling. So beautiful. I assume the bowl of water sitting on the ice will freeze first. Have a Wonderful Day!
Good job Al!
I’ll be looking for an old tire for my chickie girls and some foam stuff!!!
Hey Al, try a big Forstner bit in a drill to route out that foam next time. It works a treat.
As a mass hot water will freeze slower because it has to loose that heat to get down to freezing temperature. If sprayed into the air the not water will freeze faster because it requires some heat to transition from water to ice.
In Texas we call that hamburger steak. We seasoned with salt pepper and garlic salt and add grilled onions on the side.
9:00 the difference here is most likely by the glass jug cooling it a little.
Yes! I would like to see your experiment with the hot and cold water.
Really fun to look back at projects you were working on and how everyone has grown up!
Great video, very informative. Yes let's see if hot or cold water freezes 1st!
How and what do you use to worm your 🐔
What size are the tires you used for the water pans, and how many cans of insulating spray foam did you use per tire?
They are R15 two cans per tire
@@LumnahAcres Thank you so much for a really good way to recycle some old tires, and save me time with watering chores. Thanks for the "recipe".
also, worth trying the hand warmers under the water dishes..
Can you tell me how you did the foam insulation? Did you put something on bottom before you used the foam?
Thanks for sharing this experiment!
They LOVE my cattle panel that I bent into an arch in between my raised beds. They love sitting there staring at the feeders and fight off other hummingbirds, territorial little hummers.
Adding applecider vinegar helps from water freezing if it stays in the low 30's or high 20's.. plus the benefits.. but not gonna do much for 9°
What do you feed your chickens? I have watched many videos and hope to get a few hens.
Definitely see if the hot or cold water freezing is a myth or fact. Good job with waterer Freeze test. The salsbury steaks looked delicious. Great video.
This is a blast from the past! ❤
Sparkling snow ❄ is 👍 and freezing icy trees 🌳 are awesome too. Great testing how about heated
Dishes?
Due the water test Al! Thanks for sharing
I am going to get my husband to make me a chicken water holder like that. It is such a pain when the water hose is frozen and the animal water is frozen. That’s when we carry water buckets from the bathtub. We have 3 horses, 3 goat, 2 donkeys and 20 chickens. So any time saving thing is worth trying. Thank you.
Yes.try the warm water vs cold.
Yes, hot water and cold water freezing test would be great!
making 4 feet hole in the ground and put the water on top is the another way to use geotermal heat for winter it realy worked for me.
Thank God For this channel & your updates!
Sounds like a fun test.
