Great demo comparing the effect of wood pairings to body shape on tone. I was likewise surprised there was not more difference between the GA and the 417.

I love my 414ce-R - It's a phenomenal guitar. Sounds & plays like a dream. The 414ce is: "The Big Secret" in the Taylor-line. Trust Me !!!

Super great comparison for me, I was just on the cusp of buying a 414ce then the 417e came out. Still trying to decide. Leaning toward the 414ce because I don't have a guitar with a cutout yet.

I’m in with 414 ce. But 417. Is something. I’m in now on 417 ce. Amen. My next guitar for Church. Had a MartinD15 M. Which I fall in love with but this Taylor 417. It’s a 414 ce killer. I need to have it. Thanks for the nice demo brothers God bless.

The most *important* difference between the 417 and the 517 & 717 is that the 417 has the “Standard Neck Carve” (similar to the neck on the 414ce-R) and the other two do not. They have the “Compound Carve” which is much thicker and less comfortable to me.

For this comparison I think phone speaker accentuate the difference since it is the limited midrange space which the speaker reproduce that changes. If I have multiple Acoustics, I'd choose 414 for the taylor flavor, but if it was my only acoustic guitar, 417 wins since it is pretty versatile sounding.

Man the 414 is such a sharp sounding Rosewood after hearing the 417, which is such a bassey rosewood.. the 517 is just like a record warm, and classic while the Rosewood is like a Remastered version, it's not always better, but sometimes yes!

Hey guys, sorry but you forgot some comparison for fingerstyle! Especially in the 414 vs 417 i think it is a different thing for strumming, flatpicking and fingerpicking.
So Tommy understanding the Grand pacific is a guitar for strumming which can be used for fingerpicking ans flatpicking very well. The Grand Auditorium on the other hand is a picking Guitar that can handle strumming very well

Gosto do timbre dos 3 violões Taylor. Todos são bons. A minha preferencia seria o 414ce, em seguida o 417e-R e depois o 517. Qualquer um dos 3 violões para mim estaria muito bom. Boa comparação.

Would have been nice to include the 717, which is similar to the 517 but with rosewood back and sides. As I was targeting the 717, I’m curious as to what is the difference with this new 417 ?
    Thanks for the review.

The 717 has the torrified spruce top (so it sounds a bit more opened up, right out of the box), and some nice Builders Edition touches, like smoothed edges on the bridge and chamfered purfling on the body edge. Also the neck of the 717 has more of a v-shape toward the nut, a classic shape toward the body. The heel on the 717 is also rounded off. So you really should play them to compare, to see if all of that is worth the small difference in price.

I'm late to the party, but I am considering a Taylor 17 series. Either the 417, 517, or 717. This video helped. Thank you. I bought a J45 standard which I am going to return. I love the sound but I do not like the neck. I just have to decide which Taylor I want. I have a Taylor 114ce and it's just so easy to play compared to the Gibson for my hands. I want a warmer sound than my 114ce gives. Any thoughts are welcome. Thank you.

A more direct comparison of woods would have been 517 vs 717. Since the only difference between the two is rosewood and mahogany. But it’s cool to see a difference between these two as well. Great playing!

Taylor's size (grand auditorium), is always annoyingly bright, in any of the model variants.

Truth. The only Taylor I ever tried that I really wanted was a 618.

I didn’t hear much of a difference personally. Yes, I’m using good quality headphones. I prefer the look of the darker guitar.
