I watched CarryOn last night and really enjoyed it. Jason Bateman was a surprise, and I’m glad that they didn’t reveal his face right away. I learned to take him seriously early in the movie, so when they revealed his face, I didn’t think of him as the Jason Bateman that we would be used to. I was also able to engage because the movie gave us strong stakes and characters to care about, and though I was saying to myself early on that the villain’s plan and contingencies were completely ridiculous. I watched this yesterday. And for me it works and is an enjoyable time. The writing and performances hold everything together and make it worth the watch. It’s exciting and the random ass action scene is the only time the director does something exciting and shows he’s got something to bring to the table too. I really enjoyed Bateman, he may just be an actual sociopath, he’s so good at this. And Danielle Deadwyler brought some intensity that I just enjoyed seeing in a movie like this. I totally recommend giving this a watch!
I wasn't expecting much and was impressed after watching. Assuming the director didn't write the script he did very well with what he was working with. Glad he didn't focus on unimportant backstories that many movies focus on.
As a Brit who grew up in the 60's and 70's, this movie's title is so jarring. At first I thought: "A new Carry On film? Really!?" I know that legacy sequels are popular, right now, but crikey.
I so agree with not knowing what to stream. 7:15 I saw the thumbnail on Netflix a half dozen times while looking for a movie to watch and didn't click on it. Didn't know anything about it. Finally read the premise and thought this seems interesting. I was really glad I finally watched it last night. Fun and engaging. I was into it.
5:30 Happened to me with Godzilla (2014) everyone in San Francisco is evacuated to the coliseum stadium where the Oakland A's and Raiders played and it was so painfully obvious it's not it. Like they drop the name but don't even use a shot of it. x_x
The Die Hard 2 and LAX references remind me how they set that movie at Dulles airport, which has one of the most distinctive designs of any airport (it's an Eero Saarinen building) then filmed it someplace generic. Also, famously, on the West Coast with PacBell phone booths that we certainly don't have in Northern Virginia.
do you think, in a similar way to the "cinema experience" where seeing a film at the cinema can improve the overall experience of watching the film, this could apply to these stream at home movies?
For a streaming movie this was just very solid. It’s certainly nowhere near Die hard, but it really executes on its ambition and intention. Set your expectations and you’ll have a great time.
I had trouble with that too. Here’s the best I can figure: the bomb has a tracking device, so he couldn’t just switch the bags. So he put the bomb in a bigger bag that wouldn’t fit in the overhead, knowing it would have to be stowed, which would allow him to have access to it underneath. As a bonus, it also had a tracking tag so he could see which flight it had been put on, which would let him find Bateman. It was the weakest part of the movie to me because they didn’t explain it very well.
Exactly. My favorite movie is probably the original total recall. I watch it almost every month lol. And I still go back and forth on if it was all a dream. It makes you think. And it's almost infallible.
I watched this movie when it was made available on Netflix because I was excited for this when I watched the trailer. Now I wish I didn’t watch the trailer. I loved this movie and its one of my favorite action movies this year but I think my experience would have been much better if I went in blind.
I would say if they did 10% better writing, or maybe it is directing or edting, where they get rid of some of the many dumb spots (especially towards the end), and it could be one that gets rewatched.
I stopped after 15 minutes at the scene of the guy in the minivan who has access to every camera angle in the airport and gets all the details of the protagonists' lives in a few clicks... Plus the guy doesn't even take off his big leather gloves to type on the keyboard lol!
HOW did Ethan know which bag to switch, like how did he know which bag that was checked/tagged that will be on the right flight with the bad guy that already planned ahead? And WHERE was the number that Ethan and Nora looked up for the flight from???? Omg there’s so many questions I have in mind I can’t sleep after watching this
Ethan found a bag that was similar to the one the bomb was in, but a little too big to go in the overhead bin. He put the bomb in that bag, knowing that Bateman would have to check the bag once he got on board due to its size. Every bag has a bar code on the bottom that's scanned when a bag is checked- Ethan had the number and could see which flight it was checked into, which gave him the flight number.
The whole plot depends on airport security being so compartmentalized as to allow a single TSA agent to let a bomb through the screeners, setting off every red flag in the system, and that information only being available to him. Like a signal wouldn't immediately go out to Their entire security network.
I just watched it tonight, and yeah, I enjoyed it too. It was well paced, and the threat against Ethan was constant, he didn’t have a moment to relax. He was smart as well. I’m surprised it wasn’t released in theatres.
I really enjoyed this movie. It reminded me of die hard in some ways. You are the most viewed review of this movie to date on youtube. I am surprised the movie has not had more reviews from mainstream critics at this time. It is currently number 1 in the UK netflix charts but I don't see lots of reviews. Is this a sleeper hit? Why the silent treatment? 8.5 out of 10 for me. A gripping thriller that I enjoyed this Christmas. Cheers everyone!
Dan's review makes it clear this movie is what I hoped it would be, and I'll defnitely check it out some time during the holidays. I like Egerton, though I wish he hadn't beefed up quite so much for the role - as Dan mentioned you really want an "Everyman" in this role, and Egerton is skirting a bit too close to the Chiseled Hero for my taste. I kind of wish they had gone with Josh Hutcherson instead, who is better at looking like an underdog. Still, I think I'll enjoy this one.
I enjoyed it. This is one of my favourite films of this year. We haven’t had too many good ones. This is a good time. It’s great to see that Jason Bateman has range.
I might check this out. Also, I just learned this film was written by the writer of Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time. It'll be good to see his non-R&C work.(and a glow up from the R&C movie)
I wish people dying had more impact on the characters. Also, the cop at least pre airport was tonally very different than the rest of thr characters. (Maybe different is the wrong word - more amplified?)
I watched with my husband, who is a TSO at LAX, and he didn't like it because there were a lot of things that aren't real or true... 😅 like being on the scanner isn't a promotion, which is a huge plot in the movie. I thought it was okay. Great as a streaming movie. Also.. LAX during the holidays is craaazy... they needed more extras 😂
I find a major plot hole in the narrative. When the MC switch the suitcases he actually did not switch them. MC *put the b0mb inside another suitcase* and write down the tracking number so he can find out where the bad guy was flying to. But this means... He had to find a similar looking suitcase, he also knew the code to open it, remove the content from it and put the b*mb in and close and lock it again. He could've pry open the other suitcase forcefully, probably happens quite a lot in his job, but he wouldn't be able to close the suitcase properly without the bad guy noticing it. So what really happened? All of this was done off screen. I'm also frustrated that this guy was willing to sacrifice hundreds of people to save his girlfriend but I brushed it off because I think that could realistically happen. But there is a moment where he finally met his girlfriend for the first time after being threatened by the bad guys where he could basically could duck under a table and alerted the officers. Another thing that was ridiculous is when the girlfriend was being chased buy the other bad guy in the airport, she chose to lure him to the parking lot so she could go 1v1 against him instead of just scream from the top of her lungs. It was still a fun watch though.
I agree with your take on the suitcase switch. However I thought that the protagonist was willing to sacrifice the people on the plane in order to stop the bomb going off on the ground where the casualties would be a lot more - I think that was also said in the dialogue at some point in the movie.
I feel that the future failure of many recent flops could have been recognised at the storyboard stage. So many stupid things happening that can't be logically explained. Just find a guy who thinks about the roman empire at least once a day and have them poke holes in the script.
Just watched Carry On tonight, brilliant film, loved it. Never thought Jason Bateman would be a convincing bad guy, I was wrong! I only have one little niggle, I would've limited the physical interaction between Bateman and Egerton to the scene in the toilet after....(No spoiler!) and at the scene on the plane. Otherwise Bravo!
Dan, You're totally right I just thought it was another net-flick to skip past, but I think I might give it a shot now. Maybe you should consider making this topic a regular video series; hidden gem/gems that everyone assumes is 💩?
It's not a bad idea but I feel like you'd have to go through like a dozen movies to find one gem. Seems like it would be very painful and time-consuming.
@@Anything_Random Watching movies and tv shows is literally Dan's job though. If he can't find us hidden gems and under-rated shows, then all we're left with is random luck. I only learned about this movie recently via Taron Egerton being interviewed on Late Night with Seth Meyers. I was probably going to watch it at some point but now with Dan's strong recommendation, it will be one of my must-see films this holiday season.
@@Lupin788 There's just a lot of movies and TV shows coming out every single week. The fact is that it's already a full time job to watch most of the main stream stuff that's coming out + all of the niche awards type stuff. Dan already reviews a lot of the high profile streaming releases too, and most of them get bad ratings. Like I said, you'd really have to dig deep to find enough hidden gems to make it a regular series, and I don't think Dan, or anyone really, enjoys watching that many bad movies.
@@Anything_Random Dan, or any other reviewer, wouldn't know something is bad before he has seen it. I'm not suggesting he go out of his way to watch obscure films unless he is interested in them. However, reviewers like him are uniquely set up to watch way more media than most of us.
Have you seen "The Gift"? It was Joel Edgerton's directorial debut starring him, Bateman, and Rebecca Hall. While Bateman had the leading role, he played a bully to Edgerton's character and he was surprisingly convincing, I think it was the first time that Bateman was cast against type, he was just so unlikeable, it actually works. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you should, it's one of the most underrated thrillers of the 2010s. For Bateman, Edgerton, and Hall, The Gift is fantastic

As a Brit who grew up in the 60's and 70's, this movie's title is so jarring. At first I thought: "A new Carry On film? Really!?" I know that legacy sequels are popular, right now, but crikey.
I like when actors who regularly play comedic roles play a villain in something. Martin Short's episode in Law and Order SVU is so good
I so agree with not knowing what to stream. 7:15
I saw the thumbnail on Netflix a half dozen times while looking for a movie to watch and didn't click on it.
Like they drop the name but don't even use a shot of it. x_x
Dan - did you hear FSU’s film school bought a rundown theatre? Wondering what they’re gonna do with it!
The cinematography is crazy
do you think, in a similar way to the "cinema experience" where seeing a film at the cinema can improve the overall experience of watching the film, this could apply to these stream at home movies?
can I just say, im starting to be a fan of crowded movies
trap was set on a crowded concert
carry on was set on a crowded airport
Spirit Airline shade. 👍
For a streaming movie this was just very solid. It’s certainly nowhere near Die hard, but it really executes on its ambition and intention. Set your expectations and you’ll have a great time.
Can someone please tell me what really happened with the luggage switch? It doesn't really make sense to me.
@DanMurrellMovies this will be the best explanation for that. Just hoped that it was explained more in the movie. Still, a great movie I can say
“Is anything I just said Funny?”…”No”…brilliantly done JB
Bruce Willis just called. He wants his Die Hard 2 script back.
I really dislike the phrase “turn off your brain”. Because when a movie is not good, it actually makes you have to use your brain more.
I loved this movie and its one of my favorite action movies this year but I think my experience would have been much better if I went in blind.
when you say movie budget, is the actors play included in a movies budget?
I would say if they did 10% better writing, or maybe it is directing or edting, where they get rid of some of the many dumb spots (especially towards the end), and it could be one that gets rewatched.
Another fantastic review! Thanks!
I enjoyed this movie not bad at all
I completely agree! I watched it last night and I enjoyed it. The action scene at the end threw me off a little but I think it stuck the Landry!
I stopped after 15 minutes at the scene of the guy in the minivan who has access to every camera angle in the airport and gets all the details of the protagonists' lives in a few clicks... Plus the guy doesn't even take off his big leather gloves to type on the keyboard lol!
Gloves typing on keyboard is to prevent FINGERPRINTS... HELLO! 🤣
I'm an aviation enthusiast and I loved this movie!
Bateman played this like he was talking to Job in Arrested Development 😂 (really enjoyed this movie as a throwback, suspended disbelief entertainment)
i just watched it, and to i say, the first to mid of the film its okay, but mid to end when the rush is coming, and its a good movie i would suggest
He was actually thined down... for Black Bird, which he shot right before Carry On. He was jacked
“Carry-on” was dumb. There were some good ideas but was ruined by ridiculous ideas.
I can’t see the words “carry on” without finishing “my wayward son” ….. damn you, Supernatural! (Shaking my fist toward heaven… and Chuck).
Just watched, it is really good and enjoyed, felt the same excitement when I watched Unstoppable in 2010 (Denzel Washington/Chris Pine).
The ending was slightly anticlimactic for such a suspenseful build up. Possibly a victim of its own success. Enjoyed overall.
We got 500 to 700 a day. Best we could do
Yooo this movie is definitely worth the watch 🔥🔥
Added to the watchlist
It was fun
Maybe I'll give it a chance. Tried to watch that Lottery movie with Cena and Akwafina and just couldn't get into it.
It was a very enjoyable movie. Glad you enjoyed it too Dan. We definitely want more movies like this!
Good stuff Dan. 👍🏼
Is the first time Bateman has played a villain? If so I’d like to seek him do it again.
Does Juno count?
@ haven’t seen Juno
Have you seen "The Gift"? It was Joel Edgerton's directorial debut starring him, Bateman, and Rebecca Hall. While Bateman had the leading role, he played a bully to Edgerton's character and he was surprisingly convincing, I think it was the first time that Bateman was cast against type, he was just so unlikeable, it actually works. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you should, it's one of the most underrated thrillers of the 2010s. For Bateman, Edgerton, and Hall, The Gift is fantastic
Saw Red One on prime video this week
Thought it was o k but not great. I'm looking forward to seeing it on Netflix
Oh, come one. We loved "Red One"
