Just watched it. I was captivated by how outstandingly natural a movie about Catholic Church can go on to such universal and human dilemmas. It's such an intelligent and thought provoking work, not to say anything about the raw and sincere approach. This is not the kind of movie one would expect to restore faith on Church; but by conveying a message of peace, tolerance, compassion and forgiveness, pillars upon which the very Church stands, it goes beyond. To reproduce the words of a Metacritic analyst from The Globe and Mail: "It's extremely difficult to make something as invisible and ineffable as religious faith seem real, let alone touching, on film; doing that is only one of the achievements of Fernando Meirelles' unusual look inside the papacy." A must-watch.
Completely agree. I think it really showed that, at the end of the day, the Popes are human. They're not perfect beings. I think with Pope Francis being such a different Pope, this film really helped shed light on what he is attempting to do for his church and for the world (since he is technically a head of state). That he loves soccer, a good pizza, and Fanta is amazing. I actually enjoy that Pope Francis leans more towards being pious and seamed to be put off by the glamourous lifestyle of the summer residence. Also loved him wanting to make a flight reservation. Again, showed his humility, as just being a regular person like anyone else -- despite being in such an esteemed position. Gave me a new found respect for Pope Francis (and for Pope Benedict).

He does it because he feels the winds of change. It feels very true to who Benedict is.
Ratzinger was a liberal in his youth. He later condemned, as I hear it, Lumen Gentium as Pelagian. JPII was a charismatic personality and intensely confident in his role as pope, and that's a tough "act" to follow - especially when you've got a shallow audience that doesn't pay attention to what you say and do. Ratzinger cut off a lot of pedophiles that JPII was seemingly unaware of, and I think he is paying the price of having upset the infiltrators. I believe Benedict is a very honest man - which shines in his writings and messages. I believe he kept continuity with JPII - talking positively in his recent letter about how JPII did something definitive - declared the existence of intrinsic evil in moral theology. You will know who is good and who is bad by this - when speaking about morals, do they acknowledge objective evil, or do they only "pity" the sinner? When there is a cliff, you do blind people no favors by telling them it's ok to be blind and not telling them about the cliff.
I think Benedict realized it was time for the church to reform and adapt. I have always believed that celibacy has been a major reason for the sexual abuse scandals. Had priests and nuns been allowed to wed, just as leaders in other faiths, things would have been so vastly different.

In fact I find the idea of religion terrifying and oppressive, rather than comforting. However, this film really humanised figures who are often reduced to caricatures by media and public discourse. The script is superb and the performances are stellar. A surprisingly emotional film that anyone, regardless of spiritual status can enjoy, as well as an excellent character study that pulls the viewer in with captivating acting and layered storytelling.
It is normal to fear religion. For if God truly exists, you'd have wasted your life. Whatever you did away from God would have been pretty worthless. Nothing would have been more important.
Fantastic movie. The interaction with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Price is so genuine and so well done, that it feels real. Pope Francis brought the ancient old faith of 1.2 Billion Catholics to the modern era. He saved the practice and showed the world that if God can change and adapt with his creation, so can Churches. Pope Benedict XVI showed us that he was willing and able to step down. Despite the controversy, he did what God asked of him and he stepped down and allowed the Church to evolve. God bless them both.
I think this is one of the only movies that made me cry 'tears of joy' when I was watching it. There were some moments when the warmth of faith and compassion, and very real, very human qualities, touch me and make me tear up just from the beauty of it. It's been many years since I've been a practicing Christian, but this reminds me why I've never doubted for a single moment that I'm religious.
One of the best movies ever made... That portrayed Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict the XVI) as a wolf and Jorge Mario Bergoglio (future Pope Francis) as a peacefull sheep... When, in fact, was, and it is, the other way around... My GOD...
An extraordinary film. I wasn't really expecting anything. I cried the whole time. Praise the Lord for all the beauty n compassion we all humans have. Amen
This movie was incredible! I wouldn't say I cried the entire time, but it was like a constant tearing up. It might just be because religious stuff makes me emotional, but this movie is so powerful nonetheless. Also 20 minutes into the movie I forgot what the actual Pope looked like the casting was so good.
They capture the soul of it, it is a beautiful movie, the conversations, the music (Mercedes Sosa), I chose to see it for Anthony Hopkins and got surprised by Jonathan pryce and the whole piece of art
The acting in this film is close to the best I have ever seen. A substantial portion of the movie is just two people and dialog, but don't be put off by that; the acting is superb. The writing and delivery brings out the wisdom that these people hold. The movie itself, has such a great purpose, to humanize the people behind this scandal and it did a very good job at it.
Fantastic, wonderful, thought-provoking, honest and ultimately heart-warming film. Indescribably sublime acting from both AH & JP. A true gem. Go see it! I loved it on the big screen: it surprised me on many levels.
A terrific film on the world's most unique relationship. Top-notched acting. I walked away finding Pope Benedict more intriguing than I originally thought. Four stars.
@@jonportal577 The joke wasn't really about the movie tho so I don't understand why you would be furious. He used the film to make a joke about the grand sexual assault accusations in churches.
This film is very speculative and one-sided. The main focus is Bergoglio and his internal struggle related to his past in Argentina, so Ratzinger is just there to provide a counterpoint. It would've been more interesting to see more of his past as well. Also, much of the political subtext is barely touched upon (specially regarding the pedophilia scandals), but I get it: going that way would've turned the movie into something else. That being said, it's a great movie. Hopkins and Pryce are impeccable and their warm chemistry elevates the movie. The production values are pristine and the directing/editing are unusually charming. The text is uplifting and well crafted, and I loved the subtle humor here and there.

Pope Benedict XVI showed us that he was willing and able to step down. Despite the controversy, he did what God asked of him and he stepped down and allowed the Church to evolve. God bless them both.
the creation doesn't adapt, the meanings and values incurred but creation are subject to change and renewal
for a second I thought it was the New Pope's trailer
Netflix has copied the show...
@@teamjackie1003 netflix copied no show. It copied reality

One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. The camerawork is just...just...heavenly

I'm sure your pool to choose from was the shallow end.
@@spencexxx You sound intolerable.
I cant believe they add manila in the film im filipino and wow!! I cant believe they include our place in the movie two popes!
It truly is a masterpiece
This movie really humbled me. Thank you Netflix for your constant deliverance of relevance.
The Last Part tho “As Pope you have to remember you are not God, you are ONLY human”. Beautiful
Another masterpiece in its way
I think this is one of the only movies that made me cry 'tears of joy' when I was watching it. There were some moments when the warmth of faith and compassion, and very real, very human qualities, touch me and make me tear up just from the beauty of it.
It's been many years since I've been a practicing Christian, but this reminds me why I've never doubted for a single moment that I'm religious.
I really enjoyed this movie, even though I’m a Muslim I’m really happy to watch this and see how Pope Francis became pope
One of the best movies ever made... That portrayed Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict the XVI) as a wolf and Jorge Mario Bergoglio (future Pope Francis) as a peacefull sheep... When, in fact, was, and it is, the other way around... My GOD...
It looks good. When Anthony Hopkins says “ Silents “ so king like. I can’t wait to see it
Thug BOSS😂
Now it's just One Pope.
Yeah
An extraordinary film. I wasn't really expecting anything. I cried the whole time. Praise the Lord for all the beauty n compassion we all humans have. Amen
This movie was incredible! I wouldn't say I cried the entire time, but it was like a constant tearing up. It might just be because religious stuff makes me emotional, but this movie is so powerful nonetheless. Also 20 minutes into the movie I forgot what the actual Pope looked like the casting was so good.
This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Everything from the acting to the set is an absolute masterpiece.
When Mercedes starts to sing... CHILLS. The soundtrack of this movie is insanely good.
From Hannibal Lector to the Pope~who else but actor Hopkins❓️ 👍
Yeah
"You're only human"
Not the first time Antony Hopkions said those lines :D
They capture the soul of it, it is a beautiful movie, the conversations, the music (Mercedes Sosa), I chose to see it for Anthony Hopkins and got surprised by Jonathan pryce and the whole piece of art
Hearing Mercedes Sosa singing always makes me content!
Everything Anthony Hopkins makes turns to gold
Fact
He's amazing actor no actors compares to him.
"Whenever I try to be myself people don't seem to like me every much"...mood
The acting in this film is close to the best I have ever seen. A substantial portion of the movie is just two people and dialog, but don't be put off by that; the acting is superb. The writing and delivery brings out the wisdom that these people hold. The movie itself, has such a great purpose, to humanize the people behind this scandal and it did a very good job at it.
Fantastic, wonderful, thought-provoking, honest and ultimately heart-warming film. Indescribably sublime acting from both AH & JP. A true gem. Go see it! I loved it on the big screen: it surprised me on many levels.
I don’t know why I find it hilarious that they’re eating pizza in one scene I just never envision the pope eating pizza
@Kingdoms What the? No, it's weird when Hannibal Lecter eats a normal meal
No it’s just I always envisioned the pope eating really fancy high class meals not takeaway pizza from the local pizzeria
@Kingdoms the formal pope is german and the actual is argentino
Pizza is actually Pope Francis' favourite food. He says he has a hard time resisting it :)
@Kingdoms Benedict is German. Francis is Argentinian. They're in Italy so they eat pizza.
A terrific film on the world's most unique relationship. Top-notched acting. I walked away finding Pope Benedict more intriguing than I originally thought. Four stars.
i have very very high respect for pope francis! if i could have dinner with three people I admire most, he is one of them
Surviving R Kelly, Leaving Neverland, The Two popes, lol!
Haha lmao 😂😂
I laugh at that joke at first, but when I watch the movie I became furious at Gervais. He clearly haven't seen the Two Popes.
@@jonportal577 it was clearly a joke.
That made me search this trailer.
@@jonportal577 The joke wasn't really about the movie tho so I don't understand why you would be furious.
He used the film to make a joke about the grand sexual assault accusations in churches.
What an incredible masterpiece of a film, story and cast. Bravo!
Lol I thought this was a documentary 😅 that’s how good the casting is...
Beautiful film, saw it at the Mumbai Film festival with Feranado Merielles..
I saw it at TIFF. Amazing.
This is a perfect Movie. I loved it in every second.
Imagine Pope Francis watching this movie.
😂 😂 😂
Imagine both of them watching it

Ok: is he sitting on a pile of cash on a gold couch while 2 young boys take turns blowing him? Did I imagine it right?
Rest in peace, Pope Benedict!

Literally No one:
Me: "Hello. Clarice."
From the second Pope Francis was elected I KNEW Jonathan Pryce would portray him in a film one day. Their resemblance is uncanny.
He ate the Body of Christ, with a nice chianti.
Hermann Abt OMG hahahahaha 🤣
I am Christian. I feel terrible for laughing at this comment though. Haha.
I'm a Christian myself, this is a one wise, funny ass comment.
Savage
Could you imagine if there is a blooper reel with Hopkins doing the slurping sound while taking The Blood of Christ
Finally, Hanibal Lecter found his true place in the Vatican!
I wonder how many people actually get this?
Sophie Chambers not many 😂
This film is very speculative and one-sided.
