  • What are the Best Plant Species for an African Cichlid Tank?
African cichlids can be hard on live plants, but I have 3 live plant species worth attempting in an african cichlid tank.

I love planted community tanks. One of the reasons I’ve held back from keeping African cichlids is lack of plants. Great info

my mbunas eat every plant including the java moss, java fern and the first one you mentioned. I decided to get a 12" plastic set-in tank for the plants, this should help with the over stocking of mbunas

I have tried to keep with my flowerhorn and she tears everything up. Nice video on plants. I have not tried plants with my cichlids. I may give it a try. Thanks for the info.

    Dear Jake:
I guessed the first two, but had no idea what your, third pick for plants suitable for cichlids would be. I haven’t ever kept Amazon sword plants (Echinodorus). I didn’t realize that they could withstand cichlid attempts at uprooting.
I don’t have plans to keep cichlids again any time soon. I’m more interested in characins and livebearers, at the moment. I’ll keep this information in mind for future reference.
As always, you have produced a very informative and enjoyable video. Thank you for your continued, terrific work, sharing your, aquarist hobby with the FishFam Community.
    All my best,
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

Nice video! I keep african cichlids, and ive noticed keeping live plants like anubias ans java fern work really well with fry and juvies, as my fish mature ti full size they tend to rip off all the leaves or take big bites. I was left eith just stems, i had to remove all plants from my display tank and only keep them in my grow out system

Absolutely! Ill take all the help I can get! One thing I need to do is change my position in front of the camera, but that's difficult, given I'm kneeling between my bed and my bedroom fishtank. I'll have a better place to film when I'm done finishing my garage mancave/fishroom.

OH! That's why you're so stationary. Yeh, doing it that way is kinda hard to keep moving around. lol The main tip I can give you is you need to make your cuts closer together in a few places. When you're editing next time, remember to keep the flow moving. It's weird at first because you're seeing yourself but when you start cutting closer it'll get more natural. Second is to OUTLINE your text with black. It's hard to see and I'm on a PC. So on mobile it's gonna be even harder to see. What editing software are you using?

Damn, not familiar with that one. Can it put borders on text? If you can, put a thick board on it so it can stand out. :)

The only one I've had great success with is Java Fern.

I did it once and my cichlids destroyed every plant within 3 weeks.😕

Supposedly java Fern has a bitter taste for fish and is the main reason fish don't try to eat them.
