Around 20 years ago when I was still in high school I had a 90 gallon with mixed Africans. Mbuna, peacocks and haps, maybe even a Victorian or 2. It somehow worked out alright but anyway, one day I brought home 2 amazon swords that were probably about 7 or 8 inches tall. My substrate was incredibly shallow and my light would definitely be considered low. I never ever gave them root tabs yet somehow they grew to nearly the surface and had flowers coming out of the top of the tank. I basically did everything you're not supposed to do with swords and they absolutely thrived and my fish never bothered them at all. To this day I have no idea how I made that work.

I have been interested in African Ciclids but because planted tanks are my main love I have not kept them. Thank you for this. Only recently have I started doing floating " superstrates" of plants ' LRB style. Two plants might suggest to your list are Water Sprite and Java Moss as they don't seem to be tasty to fish.
I have two 75' s that need set up. Maybe one will be African Ciclids now. I do have hard water. I work on softening my water for SA Ciclids which I love but I might enjoy a Yellow Lab tank!

I have parrots. They used to uproot plants. In my 125g, I have them with amazon swords, java fern, temple plant and money wort and jungle val. I have them surrounded by rocks at the bottom and the fish do not bother them. I also have duckweed floating and they love to eat that. Also I have redroot floaters and they don't bother those. I had hornwort and i just hate that thing, LOL..it sheds it needles all over the place, so never again with that. LOL...awe, go on, give them a try.

I have Java fern in my peacock tank as a trial and it’s done well. They will nip a leaf every now and then but for the most part leaves it alone. When females are holding the hang out in the fern too. So much so that my next tank will have it as well as Anubis. Nice video and very informative

I would love to hear your opinion about wave makers in African Cichlid tanks. You’re one of my favorite African Cichlid people and I’ve noticed you’re one of the few that doesn’t use them. Would love to see it in a video or just hear your opinion!

I used them many years ago, but I personally don't find a huge use for them unless I have a sponge pre filter attached to them. Some people love them, and I think that's fine. There are many ways to setup a tank to enjoy the fish.

Can you put rocks around some of the plants to hinder them being dug up or will that harm the plants. Also thank for giving more information on cichlid tanks and cichlids. It seems like a lot of people that are posting on uTube are getting away from educating. I like learning about the fish and their care and what I can put in their tanks. I also love diy decorations.

Hi zenzo ,great video. A friend of mine keeps vallisneria in a big tank around 840liter with most mbuna and this plant is growing and they almost don't eat it but it isn't in good health condition ,in particular some leaves became a bit yellow.

I do too! I have found that I need to introduce it to a seasoned tank and not a younger cycling tank or it will make a HUGE mess. I think a tank with a well developed " superstrate" is very cool and a happy place for fish.

Its reassuring that these are all the plants I was planning on using for the shelly tank Im setting up. Set up a rocky corner to plant the vals in with slightly different substrate that hopefully discourages them from digging the plants up. In your experience does duckweed just get eaten?
