Will do, filmed 3 more videos so far today. Trying to get motivated to get back in the studio tonight :)
I can't wait to see the tank in a couple of months
I like your informative vids. I use my grinder with the tie cutter blade. And cut the slate into natural shapes .then file the edges smooth.
i cant wait to see the update video. so excited. XD keep the series going. I love this.
Thanks for the good ideas. I am gonna keep Green Terrors again at some point its nice to see some ideas to help keep aggression down.
Your channel is blowing up man!!! You deserve it!
+King Waltz thanks.
Amazing video!! :D
very cool, hope the plants get nice and big, I had Anubias in my African cichlid tank, they eventually gnawed them all down to stumps. Hope this works out!
Hello - did you release a follow-up video on this tank?
I love your videos and products - thank you!
nice tank.
Any updates on that planted African Cichlid tank? I'm very interested in setting up something similar but wasn't sure how you made out with it. Thanks in Advance
No update, everything died
I'm an AC addict, looking forward to the series.
Thanks for watching.
20 seconds in and I'm so loving this video :-)
Good :)
good video :)
Great video. I always thought African Cichlids pulled up plants? Always learning!
In my experience they dig pits to breed, which does dislodge the plants. But I personally don't see them pull them up. So in this tank they could be using the open flat space to breed with no need to dig as much.
I really enjoyed the video, you showed us every step. Im subscribing now. Thinking about buying Shell dwellers, or Mdoka White Lips do you have any? I would love to see a video on those !!
Nice video
Best thing about this series, a lot of it can be transferred to different species tanks.
+VillagerSparky totally
Hey Cory. Would you be willing to do a care guide/ about video on african cichlids? I thought you had one and I went back to find it, but nothin doin. 😅
good video
AC addict .. I'm always interested ....and relearning or learning something with your videos .....
Me too! :P
I'm really enjoying this series - lots of good advice. Are the tiles a permanent feature of the tank, or only there to "train" the plants?
+Anthony Ragan they have to stay or the b plants will fill in.
I sat up a cichlid tank for my wife when we were dating and she was new to fish keeping so in order to make it as bulletproof as possible I installed two of the large pond filters but instead of air I extended the riser up near the top and put a power head on each one. My directions to her was to change a bucket of water each week and wash one of the two filters in the old tank water alternating each week. The power heads agitate the surface without all the splashing air bubbles do. She had great success with her tank and the africans quickly grew to four or five inches in one year or so from one inch or less.
Very cool! I've always loved keyhole cichlids but have had zero luck with them....advice in a video would be awesome!
I might play with some at some point. I have them in the shop. Shouldn't be too hard of a fish honestly.
Another great video. It would be good if we could see an update on the previous tank you setup so we can see them as they mature. Keep up the great work, awesome video.
There will be updates there just isn't anything to show 1 week later besides the crypts melting and adjusting.
+Aquarium Co-Op Awesome, your channel is without doubt, the best aquarium channel out there. I am a big reef aquarium freak but watching your channel has sparked my interest in freshwater and I have now setup a planted freshwater nano with Zebra Danios. It's basic but I find myself watching it as much as my reef!
+Mark Taber right on.
I love the videos Cory!
How do you make the thumbnails?!
I use a feature in tubebuddy software to do it.
Do you recommend on just using a sponge filter or would adding a hob filter be necessary? Thanks and great video
is there a good bottom plant that would spread/wave/cover the slates at all... to put alongside the tall grasses? in such a cichlid tank
I used java fern and Anubis nana and it worked fine for peacocks and mbuna
I'd love to add that many fish at once but I'm concerned about the BB. Any suggestions on how to add that many labs at once? Btw I recently purchased your easy green and ita making a huge difference in my java fern and anubias!! Thank you
Bring back tank at a time! :)
I'm really enjoying your channel. Can I ask where you get your pods, rock wool, and stakes with plant info?
I buy them already done from plant farms.
how do your tanks stay warm in the winter? -thumbs up on the new series
I heat the entire building.
I'm very much into saltwater tanks (120g, 10g nano, 40b) and only a small 10g freshwater tank with a few plants and some mollies, i think its time for them to get an upgrade! i picked up a few extra tanks from petco the other week ($1 per gallon sale, wooohoooo frag tanks!) Ive wanted to do a planted tank but didn't have any inspiration you sir have given me some hope! Gonna start a 40b planted tank, Thank you!
P.S can you run a sump with a planted freshwater tank? maybe bio balls and carbon?
Great video, tiles are an interesting idea. In a dirt / aquasoil tank would there be an increased risk of anaerobic substrate using this method?
I think there would be increased risk yes, but in general dirt tanks have this problem already anyways.
Nice video. Couldn't u put some of the grey crush coral over the slate a very thin layer so it doesn't look like u just placed tile down inside the tank?
+Chris Hofmann yeah except the fish are going to move itnoff as soon as they start spawning as they like a flat surface.
The tile works but you should use real slate to make it look even more natural...but love the vids keep up the great work
where do you purchase your fish online? I would like mbuna cichlids in a variety of colors.
love your videos they are very useful. Question from an AC lover. I have 2. ML90615-00 lights on my 75g with a fully stocked established tank of mixed Malawi cichlids (mostly mbuna) tank with about 2 inches of gravel. Are there any plants that would thrive in my setup?
You could probably grow anubias and java ferns with some fertilizer.
love all your videos very informative..how many African cichlids you think I could squeeze into my 55g and my 125?right now there's a breeding pair of jalo reef in the 55 and a few others like demansoni ..how many could indo without cramping them
Depends on the species and how they are stocked really. I usually run about 20 adults in a 55g for example.
+Aquarium Co-Op okay I have a pretty good idea I've been a fish keeper now since I was about 7 I've had a love for it since I can remember I just wanted to hear your opinion as well ..I enjoy all of your videos I just subscribed haha .thank you for the advice and keep up the great work.all your tanks look very nice btw
Very helpful hard to get good fish in ireland, mostly guppies and the like. Very expensive to import.
very interested in seeing how this tank turns out. I have a saulosi juvenile tank I'm growing out right now. I'm a planted tank guy but. didn't plant this tank though. would love to see this a few months from now.
I hope it comes out well :)
so if theres any fighting going on with the africans hahaahahahhaaha 8:08
Do you recommend any plants for silver dollars and South American cichlids?
I wonder if I could pull off floaters with tanganyikans?
How's this tank working out? Planted cichlid tanks are so far and few between. Interested in your cichlid plant packs please post an update video.
+thomas gambino it has been shown a bit in the daily doses. Still growing in at this point.
Oldie but goodie....how'd it turn out anyway??
Hi Cory, do you add any buffer or salt?
Thank you i wantted to trun my 55 gallion to a plant african cichlids tank but didn't know were to start
Anybody know if we put the air valve on the pump side or filter side relative to the check valve…!?!
With your angel fish tank you should put the discus in it and jungle plant it. Love your vids
It could happen. Could always setup a bigger tank for them as well. who knows :)
Instead of those square slate tiles you could use a slate flagstone from a garden centre to make it look more natural.
can you mix the gray coast with normal gravel?
How do you make the bottle filter
Cory, do the sponge filters in your shop come apart in a similar way?
Yes
Dude been watching a ton of your videos and been meaning to ask, saw you roll on paint to the back of the tank, what kind of paint are you putting on the back? Painted tones of rockets over the years in my other hobby but never painted glass
Oil based rustoleum
I have been looking forward to this video so thanks, great!
But also a couple of questions.
# So no hiding places other than the Valisneria (against "common knowledge")?
# I have purple Acei that constantly sift the fine sand I use and also a group of clown loaches. Will they be ok with the course substrate or should I do something differently?
They'd be fine on multiple types of substrates. I wouldn't say no hiding spots is against common knowledge. It's a common tactic to not use hiding places with africans and stock heavy. For instance moorii being a deepwater hap are open swimmers and don't utilize hiding spots. I think most african cichlids get lumped together which is a mistake.
How would the clown loaches do in a tank like yours and what is the smallest size gravel/sand for good plant growth? 1-3mm, 3-5mm?
I'm sort of in a crisis right now, as I am trying to pick between a species of Apistogramma (cacs or ags) or kribensis. Which would be better in this situation? I have a little bit higher than 7 ph, at around 7.4-7.8 (color difference is so small), and tank members would be 3 guppies, 5 neon tetras and 2 black skirt tetras which i don't know if I should keep🤨. I also have a female(?) Bolivian ram cichlid along with a dwarf gourami, and those two have some altercations once in a while. I would either get rid of one of those or let nature take its path for them when the chosen fish arrive. Ugh. These are all beautiful, charismatic fish and it is hard to choose between them. Oh, the tank is planted, as i have got 3 anubias, hornwort, 1 crypt. wendtii and hygrophila and ,some wisteria. Even though i have these plants theyre quite small for the most part and (with the exception of the hygro, wisteria and hornwort). I am looking to get some sort of driftwood soon to replace a plastic, large cave currently have to create a more natural look.
For the hydro 3 filter (or any sponge filter) what is the function of the uplift tube? does the uplift tube add flow thru the sponge? thanks
Well it helps keep control of the bubbles producing a more even flow. Technically the longer the tube the more lift you get.
Is there a shorter plant option that looks the same
how many sponge filters do I need for a 55 gallon aquarium
How is this tank coming along? I would love to see it.
This tank, was redone when I gave the Africans to Steenfott Aquatics, Currently I'm converting it to a crypt garden for some livebearers.
I know this is old, but I’m hoping you still check the comments every now and then. I have only been keeping fish for 6 months or so, but I’ve been wanting to keep African cichlids. I got a 40 Breeder and set it up as a mini version of this one from this video, except with a sand substrate. I ordered vallisneria from you, and planted it in there, hoping to get it established before adding fish. I was planning on getting small fish to start out, but I came upon an opportunity to get a couple of yellow labs and 5 yellow tail acei from a friend for a steal. He was getting rid of them. I put them in the tank and immediately regretted not putting them in my 75 Gallon instead. So I ended up switching the community fish in the 75 to the 40B and then putting the Africans in the 75. It has black gravel. I will look into adding some gray coast too. So my problem is that they must be pulling up the vallisneria, which melted back pretty badly but is still throwing out runners. Or at least it was when it would stay planted. Lol any recommendations? I do have some rocks in the middle of the tank too, but it’s been a few days, and so far I’ve been replanting the vallisneria every day at least once. I just left it floating today. Help! I’m in love with the look of live plants, so I want to make this work!
If they are pulling them up you don’t have many options. You could grow them in a pot in a different aquarium and then when established move them to the tank with the Africans.
Not the little pots that they come in right? What sort of pot? Thanks for the reply!
Will watch in full later, but quick question-what exactly is the point of the uplift tube in the sponge filter?
The theory is that when the bubbles and water traveling are contained in a tube, it creates more suction through the sponge. In testing this is true but only marginally. The benefits vs the extra time to clean etc for me isn't worth it as I service hundreds of sponge filters monthly.
Gotcha. Makes sense, thanks!
Hi Cory :) I was wondering, do you think your co-op will ever ship to England or Europe? I doubt i will get an answer as your so busy but i put it out there in hope :)
I’m not sure I’ll make a physical store there. But I would love to have an online store someday to sell over there.
How many full grown cichilds can you keep in a 75 gallon?
Where’s the updated video?
I tried Valisneria in my African Cichlid tank of 8.2 pH and it literally dissolved after a week. Usual Malawi GH & KH.
I don’t know how you got this to work?
I have enough light and feed plant food. 🤷🏻♂️I’ve only had Java Fern and Anubius survive.
I have also heard Elodia works for Malawi’s and it dissolved too.
