Hello friend, I tell you that since my style is associated with rock and metal, these are the midi speed settings that have been pleasing to my ear (in programming context): Bass drum: 120 (for greater consistency). Snare: normal hits 120, fills from 80 to 114 (depending on the intention and musical time). Toms: normal hits 120, fills from 80 to 114 (depending on the intention and musical time). Hit-hats: I usually use even more dynamics (90 to 120), for more realism in consecutive hits. Cymbals: usually at 120. Also, I always have alternate hits, smoothing, and randomize hits turned on, in addition to using different articulations for a more organic sound. Another important point to consider is that not all libraries respond the same way, nor do they have the same articulations, so it is necessary to test the sounds over and over again, and how they can be functional to programming. Greetings and sharing experiences is appreciated!!
Very cool tips, specially the one about adjusting the curve where you can avoid hitting 127 when you play v-drums. Sometimes I play quietly and I rage when I hit the hotspot of my snare.
Great video as always, really helpful 👍👍 I can't understand the drum map concept: when I drag and drop a pattern the kick hit is converted to open, and I can't find it even trying to create a new map from scratch. Any suggestions? I both program and play with a Roland TD-50 with positional sensing configured in SD3 zones
I always do some adjustments in Reaper on my Midi track. Tip 5 is a good one for me to try out. I think the free preset only work when you own that SDX pack, I don't own it, Thanks for uploading this learnful video Mike. I hope you get on with your new Studio. Stay safe my friend! :-)
thanks again.. this helped me in that my hihat has almost no dynamic range and is always blasting 127. (yamaha dtx502) it also doesn't seem to have CC its either open or closed and nothing in between. Happy to see more presets being offered.. Maybe somebody with the know how could start a preset sharing page or something would be pretty cool.
Hello!! great content!! what do you think of the velocity used on the midi packs that came with SD3? Or any library like Death and darkness? i found it that sound really great but there is a lot up of 120. Thanks!
I do a mixture of heavy and classic Rock. Kick: usually between 110 - 115 Snare normal hits: around 100 Snare accentuation: 104 - 110 Toms: around 100 - 104 depending on the part Hit hats: around 90 Cymbals around 110 I do the same for smoothing and randomize and use different articulations quite often for realism. Thank for your videos Mike they are informative and inspirational!!
JorgeParagliding Well, tough choice. The D&D has a more versatile setup, providing enough snares, kicks, toms and cymbals. Hansa is more about the rooms and less about the instruments - they recorded just a few, but these are hand-picked and handmade, so very unique and rare instruments. But I agree, the marble room sounds phenomenal. I will think about it.

Great tips as always.
One of the best e-drumming/drum VSTi channels by far.

Sehr informativ Luke. I hatte bis jetzt nur mit SSD4 gearbeitet, habe also keine Erfahrung von anderen Drum Software Programmen. Tolles Video !!!!

Hi Rob, yes, you need to have this particular SDX, but I think I will share more presets for other libraries in the future. Stay safe, my friend!
Thanks a lot for the video Mike and for sharing the preset! Also I love the tip about avoiding velocity 127!
Cheers, glad you liked it 🙏

There will be more presets for sure in the future. I dig the idea of a sharing page though.

I really like the song! It's so soothing
Great tips! Thanks!

Hi Fabian, yes, I have to agree. However, it's so easy and fast to change velocities that I never really cared.
Track sounds so good. Snare sounds phenomenal!
Thanks a lot! That Sonor Bronze snare is just amazing.
I do a mixture of heavy and classic Rock.
Kick: usually between 110 - 115
Snare normal hits: around 100
Snare accentuation: 104 - 110
Toms: around 100 - 104 depending on the part
Hit hats: around 90
Cymbals around 110
I do the same for smoothing and randomize and use different articulations quite often for realism.
Thank for your videos Mike they are informative and inspirational!!
Thanks a lot for your settings, Stephen. This will help a lot of folks as a reference.
Maybe a preset from the Rooms of Hanza SDX will come in the next video? 😃
Hi Jorge, I will consider this. But which room of the four different rooms then? ;)
Mike Luke the marble room seems quite versatile for both Rock and Pop (at least what I have seen in RUclips) I am undecided between D&D and Hanza

Mike Luke I may have to get both 😃 My wife is not going to be happy 😜
