I'm Polish and long time ago I learnt the German language - at that time I discovered Reinhard Mey and I fell in love with his music, voice and lyrics. After so many years nothing has changed, I still like him a lot. Thank you for reminding me Reinhard Mey - I'm coming back to listening to his music and to the German language because in the original language the songs are always the nicest. ♥
also quite a bit of context is lost. Like "we name airports [...] after the worst ones" - the song is from 1996. In 1992 the new airport in munich was named after Franz Josef Strauß. The part about peacekeeping missions and sable-rattling is probably about the "peacekeeping missions" during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s -- and "since five ö'clock this morning we've been shooting back" references Hitlers speech at the beginning of World War Two: "since 5:45 we're shooting back" (after a false-flag "attack")
Reinhard Mey is a poet. He has critical songs, songs about the nice things in life, sad things, his children, very little things, like a sandwich with butter, a mug of chocolate or his father's coat and even really funny songs. In one of his concerts I laughed so hard the whole evening I nearly fell off my seat. You wouldn't believe it when you listen to him here, but it's true. He is special. Just a little thin man in black clothes and his guitar on a stage and the audience, small or big, listens to every syllable he is singing. Extraordinary.
Reinhard Mey is one of the great contemporary German poets. He knows how to turn words into power. Whoever did the translation did an excellent job, but in German it sounds even better.
Reinhard Mey was born in berlin during ww2, when the city was bombed and destroyed, and grew up during the cold war, he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to peace, war and politics. The lyrics were translated perfectly! I hope you listen to more of his songs, he’s a legend, even today at age 81.
Reinhard Mey wrote this song 1996 and for me it sounds like it was from yesterday. And yes, the text is brilliant in German and the translation ist really good. He was born 1942 in Berlin. In the times of bombs, hunger and freezing. I suppose, his playground was the rubble of destroyed Berlin houses. He got famous in the 60s and I grew up with his music in a time of many important singers/songwriters.
The times were always like this, since civilasation exist. And that is the sad part, we humans just refuse to learn from it and step in the same trap every time.
I am not giving my son...meinen Sohn gebe ich nicht...This is the best of Reinhard Mey, and even more topical, given everything that is going on in the world👍
He is a gem of a songwriter or more a poet who is speaking from his heart and abot things surrounding all of us. No matter if it is serious and so very important or funny as hell like some of his songs are too (men in the hardware store, I am a plumber by profession, Some idiot is always mowing somewhere, not sure if there's a translation) he is always describing the reality masterfully using the language like a painter colors. The translation is very good here but it's even more effective in German as he is using every nuance of the language and some are really hard to translate (it's literally like translating poetry), not to mention his lyrics are three or four times longer than most songs you hear.
Dear D, I can tell you, that Reinhard Mey's German lyrics are even better - much better! - than the translation and it would be worth, doing many more of his songs as he has always been an outstanding master of words, a real poet during his very long career! Cheers from Switzerland, Leo
There is another great song from him on a similar topic. It's called "Das Narrenschiff", "The ship of fools". I will see if there is a video with english lyrics.
for a brief moment I was afraid this was the studio version. glad to hear the guitar from the live show right away. powerful song (background, I think he tried to make this song go mainstream and didn't catch the "modern" right. he's a chanson singer known for his guitar arpeggios with band and tried to do some avant-garde hip-hop-ish thing. in hindsight he should've released a version in his style and invite other musicians to cover it for their audiences.)

This songtext is good in english but in german is the song a pound deeper... In the German language, 50% of the message is in the text, but the other half is expressed through the intonation of the words. To be honest, I think this song is quite problematic and the message is not very good. He takes exactly the same line as demagogues who say, that every politician is a liar who just wants power and doesn't care about the people ("underlings" "be on your guard"). That completely negelcts the compexities of political decisions and processes, compromising and the normal democatic way of gouverning. Of course some politicians are bad, some just don't know better, some actually don't care about the people, but a lot of them really want the best for their country and, at least in Germany and the USA, most people really do live quite good lives. The constitution ensures freedom, the rights against the state and if you look into statistics you see, how high the freedom is in the USA and Germany. While it is generally necessary to keep an eye on the factual freedom and things like the influence of media tycoons etc., the way he generalizes things and calls on the people to distrust everyone who is in power, paves the way for easy messages and populist messias-figures that emerge everywhere today.
You've got some important point here. But I think Reinhard Mey is not saying every single politician is dishonest. He's refering to those who are, I guess.
I was a part-time politician for quite some time when I was younger. It is my impression that there is a substantial difference between those people and politicians that do politics for a living and never haven’t done anything else but politics. I was a senior lecturer in chemistry, in that profession, I earned as much in a week as I was paid for my efforts in politics in an entire year. I spent that for attending party meetings, so the net gain was zero. But I can only tell for my Scandinavian home country.
I'm Polish and long time ago I learnt the German language - at that time I discovered Reinhard Mey and I fell in love with his music, voice and lyrics.
