    I love this instrument
My brother in law got me one as a Christmas present and I'm determined to master some techniques and chord progressions to show that I'm thankful

You go girl. The 5 string banjo is the only instrument of American heritage and from the hills of Appalachia. There is nothing that sounds sweeter than a well played 5 string banjo. “Bluegrass” Is the best.
Remember if you want the strings to last you a while, be sure you wash your hands before you play and wipe the strings down when you are done with something like cotton t-shirt.
I wish you lots of luck and don’t give up on your present. Practice often and soon you will surprise yourself.

@@slowpoke7759 I need the muscle memory in my hands to increase so I can keep up those patterns.
Even so, it makes such a lovely sound with chords and I can tease a few songs out of it already!
      Thanks for the encouraging comments🌞

Catherine Summers Remember you just got this instrument. It takes tons of practice. It would be good to surround yourself with the music of bluegrass. If want to surprise your ears, look up this song on RUclips “ Love, Oh Love Please Come Home” by Don Reno and Red Smiley. You will hear many combinations rolls and the man plays a banjo without a capo. He was one the grandfathers of the 5-string banjo. I met the man more than 45 years ago. I know you will like that song, because you cannot stop patting your foot. He was one of the best and so was Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. My dad wrote some songs for them.
Also give a listen to “The Roving Gambler” by Ralph and Carter Stanley” also RUclips. This is a great banjo tune from the Clinch Valley of Virginia way back in early ‘60’s. You note the different style of banjo picking. You will also like. Add the original version of a “Man Of Constant Sorrow”.

This was helpful for a big picture look at the end goal of learning to combine strumming, singing, and rolling but very confusing for a beginner. We couldnt even tell what cord you were making or how to make it.

You can play the same songs, but with a different technique. And different chord fingerings because 4 string banjos are tuned differently. Probably C G D A
He is playing “scruggs style”/3 finger style. And its tuned g D G B D

It's not a tutorial. He's selling his business. I learned to play banjo over 30 years ago from one of his books (BLUEGRASS BANJO). His books and albums are great.... his videos... not so much.
