  • This week we were lucky enough to have the new MG ZS EV on test for 5 days. We covered over 500 miles in that time and gave it a good family workout as the MG will potentially be replacing our Tesla Model S. Follow me to find out how I got on, and if this will be our long term replacement or if it doesn't make the grade.

I saw the MG at the recent Festival of Electric Vehicles (at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon) and I have to say that the build quality looked extremely good - easily as good as the leaf and a considerable amount less expensive. The company really do deserve to do well with this car. I can only echo what others have said: This car will shake things up. Manufacturers will be forced to look again at their pricing.
    Really enjoyed the video Kate.

Lucky you, indeed! Thanks for the excellent review, Kate. MG ought to be more forthcoming about range and charging rates, but the information is sort-of out there for those who want to know. We love the car. So does Florence! She’s grown a lot since we saw her. 🙂

I recently tested one and I have to say that the quality is now up there with all the bigger manufacturers who charge a lot more and have far shorter warranties . They seem to have listened to reviews over the last few years and deserve to do really well, I’m sure they will and am looking forward to receiving mine

A really good presentation clear and very well produced including the little things that could annoy you when driving, but every car has those, I think the charge flap is not really a big problem, just bend your back and plug it in the exercise will do you good! The big missing information is real world range, that is what I think we were all waiting for in the last 3 mins of your report, at present all of us are obsessed with range, so a further update about this in your 5 day loan would be very welcome for us all as you seem to do long distance and short town based driving, so we await your next video should you purchase a MG EV regarding range and longer daily use.

    Hi
    Interesting read.... thanks.
    My story.
I test drove this MG ZS EV the other week and must say its fab for the ££
I am on my second Nissan Leaf, so I know how to gauge the real world mileage if you are a motorway user!! (I have covered over 100k miles in EV's)
I had the MG ZS EV and took it on my normal Nissan Leaf trip of 55 Miles to the office..her are my results.........
    Nissan Leaf Tekna 2017 30kWh
Gadgets switched on - AC/Seats/radio/lights/phone plugged in & charging
Passengers - Myself and my son
    Weather conditions - Dry
    Speed - 75mph (Average)
    Time - 45 minuets
    Distance traveled - 55 miles
Start battery reading mileage - 101
    End reading mileage - 2
Total reading mileage loss - 99 miles
    MG ZS EV 2019 44.5kWh
Gadgets switched on - AC/Seats/radio/lights/phone plugged in & charging
Passengers - Myself and my son
    Weather conditions - Dry
    Speed - 75mph (Average)
    Time - 45 minuets
    Distance traveled - 55 miles
Start battery reading mileage - 167
    End reading mileage - 40
Total reading mileage loss - 127 miles
****40 miles more range than my current 2017 Nissan leaf
    I hope this helps people.......
For me it will give me that added piece of mind that if a charger is broken (And they always are) I will get a few extra miles than I currently get from my leaf!
    Bad points....
The only issues I had are these.
1 - The charging flap is very wobbly and I cant see it lasting very long at all and it really does get ion the way when you plug in...... I wonder if this is under the 7 year warranty?
2 - Over ruff ground there a re a few rattles
    3- User interface not great
    4- No central head restraint
4- Lower back strain due to lack of lumbar support
    Cheers

I'll not be replacing my Tesla just yet then, but as I've said on here before this does look like the beginning of the affordable EV's. Let's be brutally honest here, the current crop of EV's on sale in the UK with the exception of the Renault Zoe, are either too expensive or unavailable due to high demand. This MG and the forthcoming VW products could alter the market significantly. Let's hope so for the good of everyone. I've operated EV's since 2014 and plan to replace at least two Diesel cars with these MG's others will follow. Exit the Mondeo, enter the MG? Very sad really as we've operated the Ford mile muncher in various guises Cortina Sierra and Mondeo since 1965 I still have a 1982 Cortina MK V convertible, anyone remember those?

Looks a good value proposition but I don't need more space so the Zoe is still fine for me (plus I'm getting 190 miles range now it is summer again). Another 50 miles range would be ideal but I think the fact they are pushing the price closer to an ICE car may persuade a lot of people. Other EVs seem to be getting more expensive (I paid less than £18K for my Zoe including battery and I'm not sure they are available at that price anymore).

Do a test drive! Yes, it's not the "best" ev, it has some quirks too. But for the price it is a really good deal. Like Kate is saying here if you have a family with smaller kids you can get them in and out easily. Much more easy than in the car we had before, with was a Ford Focus station from 2012. Rang? Yes, range is not the best but we can do 90% of our yearly driving without a problem. Only long distance is a bit more annoying because you have to charge more often. But I could get to my parents house without a stop or a very short one (220km highway for most part). Bjørn Nyland did a trip to the north cape with it. There is also a MG5 right now which is a stationwagon with a slightly bigger battery! That bigger battery should also come to the ZS.

This car seems like a good entry level first EV for people looking to tip toe into EV life, doesn’t strike me as a replacement for a Model S tho, the cars are in two totally different ball games. Halogen headlights are terrible compared to LED, there’s no denying that, so that alone would rule this car out as my first EV, nevermind the lack of app or (what people describe as) terrible heating.

What this EV has going for it is the right pricing.
Its price is set low enough to be attractive for those wanting a new EV and low enough to make you accept some flaws, but also high enough that you will defend your purchase against those who dare criticise the MG ZS EV. In anything but build quality it will be a step down from an old Tesla Model S, but on the other hand even a used Model S from 2016 will cost more in the UK than the MG ZS EV with all extras and that is before we start talking repair costs, where the Tesla is luxury car expensive.

The seatbelts aren't adjustable either I see. Also will be interested in EuroNCAP rating considering Tesla is 5 stars and one of safest cars. For me those seats would drive me mad look like leather or faux leather and with my Ioniq have the lumbar support on driver side. Will be interesting how you go if you go through with your reservation I believe you've got on this vehicle. One thing going for it is low price, though if it makes it to Australia, probably won't be nearly as cheap as in the UK mind you I have 5yrs on my lease to see what happens in the EV world.

Super review, so you said you would swap the Tesla for it? I find that quite a statement considering what a head turning car a Tesla is and that this isn't, can I ask if you own the Tesla outright or if you are happy to swap because the monthly payments will be a lot cheaper, I'm only asking because I would like to gain a perspective on the statement that you would swap a Tesla for a Chinese made MG. Really enjoy your content, we are considering this car but will wait 18 months and see how they perform and pick up a 2 year old if they perform well.

quite close to deciding to buy one of these, but at the last moment noticed the back seats split the wrong 60/40. the left hand side should be the 40 so you can fold the rest down whilst having your child in the safest place. I cant fit my surfboard (diagonaly) and my childs tolder seat at the same time, making it worse than a golf. bit of a niche concern maybe but a deal breaker for me. hurumph. Why was there no mention of real world range and charging time? Also, charging from 0% is a silly metric. Are the people who charge from a dead battery the same ones who coast into a gas station because their tank ran dry? Maybe use a real metric like going from 5% -> 75%.

Thanks for this very informative review. I'm very cautious about Chinese cars, historically, because of the dire safety performance of many of them. When MG first introduced the recent models i noticed that the cars didn't even have rear centre head restraint - a basic safety feature on cars since the 90s or so. I thought that they'd have sorted out this omission by now. A head restraint is there to protect neck from whiplash and other injuries including paralysis caused by broken neck. But this hi-tech car is still lacking in this basic safety feature. This begs the question, 'for the sake of £20-£30 or so at the factory they're putting the rear centre seat passenger at risk of neck injury. If they're cutting corners with this, just where else are they cutting corners?'

I've one on order and the lack of timer is a problem for me, also on Economy 7 tariff. I'm inquiring about fitting a timer at the switch box and there are rumours that a 3rd party app may be on the way. My dealer tells me it's already available in Thailand but doesn't know if or when it will make it here. Hope it does as the timer will cost a bit to install.

Admittedly the figures I'm about to quote are for the ZS, not the ZS EV, but Euro NCAP has a 51% child crash protection rating and 3 stars overall. Model S is massively superior in that respect, and that's why the ZS EV is ruled out for me (77% for a model S, 86% for a model 3)
