- Here is a great idea for an IC-705 Go Box, but a big fail on the execution. Learn from my pain and save your money. DO NOT BUY.

You must of got a dud. I purchased one also and had no problem fitting the radio down far enough to mount with the 4 screws. No pressure used or marking of the radio. My kit also came with instructions and screws to mount the 3d printed mount into the case so not to rely on the double sided tape. The only other thing I did was replace the bnc connector with a bulkhead mount bnc to bnc. Didn't like the idea of a open soldered connector in the transmission line.
Thanks for sharing VK4KWS. I was hoping anyone with a positive experience would comment. It is such a great idea I didn't want my single experience to be the only point of reference for those interested.
Thanks for taking the time. I bought two. No issues. I took a Dremel Tool and rounded the sharp edges. Took 2 minutes. Works great. Yes, not perfect execution but it works.
So glad others have had a positive experience and that yours worked out fine. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing. I prefer using a backpack for transporting the 705. I bought a portable QRP radio and I like to go minimalist when going into the field. I don't want to be carrying a hard case and extra weight for POTA/SOTA. But a lot of people like the cases so thanks for exposing this one.
Agreed! We buy the IC-705 because its a small radio, then attach every gizmo to it we can find defeating the original purpose. Thanks for watching.
Good video, very good points. I did appreciate the dramatic finish!
That's me, drama queen.
I bought it and love it. My icom705 is very happy. my case was not so damaged like yours.
Alex B. So glad you had a good experience and thanks for sharing. I would want to push people away from a good idea if my defect is the minority.
I have purchased this last year and just now got to use it on my 3 week across country. My 705 fit in without issues. What I did find out and was not happy or I did not read all the way through. The frame as stated in your video does not secure to the bottom - floating ICOM when case is closed.Lucky I was able to find foam to put in the top to mitigate 705 faceplate damages. One more frown face :( : The wires to the Antenna ground and the ground needed to be soldered since only half to 1/4 of the wires actually made the solder joints when I received the case. Question, has any found an efficient way to secure the frame to the case? My metal frame did not come with stickies and if it did, I would not use them anyways
Are you suppose to mount it from the rear? Not push it through the front?
When the punch press pierces the sheet metal it creates a flange that goes to a right angle on all 4 sides, and the right and left flange have a secondary operation (or progressive die) that creates a "L shelf" to catch the IC-705 face plate on the right and left as you slide it through the front. It is actually impossible to insert it from the back; but as soon as you asked, I did think to myself, "Oh no, I didn't make that simple of a mistake did I"? Fortunately, the answer is, "not this time."
There are some other comments already from others who have purchased the same unit and theirs doesn't exhibit the same defect.... So, I'm guessing the tolerancing and QC may not be up to par; what I received was a defect, while others may experience the fit expected.
Interesting video. For me, I bought the 705 because it's a small QRP radio. The last thing I want to do is make it bigger by adding all of the junk.

The gadgets are tempting, but I'm glad this didn't work out for me.
I agree with you; we like it because it is small....lets keep it that way.
It looks like a case that has so much potential I really like having all the ports
It is a great idea. Some others have commented they did not experience the same defect as me and theirs are perfect. I was hoping others would share as I don't want to steer people from a good idea; perhaps I just got a dud.
You missed one. The power piles are backwards. Red on the right when looking down from the top.
I did miss that. I've had a few people tell me there's were flawless, and several mention the same problems I've had.
Hi Bob.. sorry you had a crappy experience with this.. Thanks for sharing and giving us a heads up.. As Always, a very informative video.. 73, Kevin ~ k0klb
Thanks for watching & the positive feedback, Kevin.
Thanks for sharing!
Some feedback I've received is there are some of these cases out there that do work; glad to hear it! Thanks for watching.
What software is running in the background?
That is SDRuno software used with my SDRplay; I get many questions on this and need to do a video series on it some day. I have it set up to also do rig control with my FT991A.
Never seen this but now I know to pass it buy. Thanks.
Sounds like some others have had good success, and maybe mine was a dud.
You're right about spending on accessorizing. I ended up with the WindCamp frame/protector which I use with the bag that comes from China with another sheet metal frame (which sheetmetal frame, though nice, is a bit too soft for me). The bag holds the radio, batteries & the AH705 tuner too. Then I added the 3D printed cover from Schipsoft, which also holds an extra battery. All of this, of course, prevents me using the Begali Adventure mono that I got at Dayton 'cause the WindCamp frame/protector mounts with the same 1/4-20 hole that the Adventure 705 bracket uses. And there ain't no way to get around that. Which means I guess I need to get the desk/magnetic base for the Adventure ;-) . Thanks for the nice video. Good review. And yeah, the plastic box is probably worth keeping ;-) 73 de W8IJN
Thanks for stopping by the channel, viewing, and commenting Nils. Turns out another ham watching the video wanted to take it on as a challenge and bought it from me; I go about 60% of my money back. I was happy with that along with learning an important lesson.
How much you want for it? Sure it sucks "as-is" but a little bit of modding and a couple passes with a rattle can, and it might actually be ok. You could get some of your money back.
Shoot me and email at thehoaham@gmail.com and we'll see if we can work something out.
Interesting. This was in the June issue of QST to a pretty good review. Now it’s noted in the September issue as “most popular article” by online subscriber votes.
I was hoping some people had a good experience with this; two have commented thy had a good fit, so I'm hoping the defects I had were in the minority.
Did you use the rubber feet that Icon supplies with your radio? I saw another reviewer of this go box and he discovered right away that those need to come off, or at least the two in the front. That's why it's so tight top to bottom. Something else bad that you missed because you never got that far is that when you plug in the headset cable it cuts out your speaker. I think I'd use a bluetooth headset if I use a headset.
I wouldn't buy that case anyway myself. I'd fab up something custom from scratch around probably a Harbor Freight 3800 case which would include a 12 volt flat screen monitor in the lid and a 12V micro PC. Mine would have space for my AH-705 too. I think too I would put my radio near the front and on a piano hinge so I can tilt it up for easier operation and not have to reach across the box.
I didn't have the rubber feet on as I was never a fan. Was a really disappointing experience with this case. Someone who watched the video reached out and made an offer to buy it...I was glad to recoup a little of my money.
Great information thank you 📻⚛
Always appreciate your positive feedback.
@@HOAHamRadio your very welcome my friend we are hams we stick to each other and help each other thats why this hobby is so great 73s
I think it’s a case to take to a higher court !
Someone with a sense of humor I can appreciate! Thanks for stopping by.
Oh yeah the other reviewer got a buggered up chassis too.
So, I'm not the only one. Wasn't sure.
I saw these cases and thought they were great... maybe 3d-print a copy of that metal frame? Looks like a regular "Wonderful" apache case?
Some other commenters are saying theirs were great, so it may be a mixed bag.
I love mine, but my usb cable did fail
Thanks for commenting on your mostly positive experience; I didn't want my sample size of one to be the only input. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Just get a cage or a pelican case
Hey Psyops, hope all is well! Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Just 3D Print a new Face Frame. :)
Great suggestion...then you can set this up more precisely how you want it. Now to get the XYL to spring for the printer.
@@HOAHamRadio The cabling is worth re-using, hopefully, everything but the sheet metal seems usable. The 3D printer should be an easier sell than any ham radio. Tons of useful things for the wife and household can be made with it. Best tool I've ever purchased. Instead of 3d printing the front panel one could machine it from a poly cutting board, or a sheet of ABS, or many other materials. 73 and good luck de w6akb.
One point,
Didn't you try offering the radio from behind instead of from the front of the panel ..
Not rocket science..
There are flanges on the back side which prevent inserting from behind. Thanks for the suggestion and for stopping by to watch.
You can look at the video and clearly see that isn't going to work.
the one on ebay is absolute garbage and customer service is even worse garbage
Shoot, sounds like you had the same luck as me David. Definitely a mixed bag with this box; poor quality control for sure.
