Small boats and canoes with outriggers have existed since time immemorial. One still sees outriggers used to keep fishermen and passengers safe all across the Philippines and elsewhere. Outriggers make sense on kayaks in windy and wavy shoreline areas. They could also be important for the heavier fishing kayaks that are hard to upright if capsized. The relative instability of kayaks has probably put many folks off getting into them as a hobby.
Thanks for doing these, was wondering myself if I should buy these off the internet or not! You've shown me what I needed to know, thanks again. Love these, although I will have them just above the water line.
Iv'e been waiting for this review having watched your other one on installation of outrigger. I bought a Robson Moonster kayak almost flat bottom white water kayak for use on our UK lakes and off shore. Knowing that tracking would be difficult I fitted a skeg which did good keeping me in a straight line but after just 45 minutes I made the mistake of turning my body 45 degrees to watch this guy doing stunts with his wind surfer and over I went. 😢 So its been just great to see how you went on as although Ive fitted my outrigger Ive yet to try it out. ThanX
I have a similar set up except mine doesn't touch water until needed, just little above the waterline. This way you don't need to compromise the speed.
@@BTROutdoors I put them on for the first time last week as I intended to fish Lake Michigan for salmon. Yeah, even those were not going to be enough to deal with 6-8 foot waves
Hi, do you have access to the hull of your kayak ? I'd like to install this on my kayak but don't know how to maintain the screww in place as i can't have access inside and put bolt and plates ...
The kit came with Whale nuts, it's a screw that has rubber around it and when you tighten it the rubber gets bigger. I didn't have access so this worked perfect. You can also use kayak rivets. I had the same question when I was looking to install them. Thanks for watching.
@@BTROutdoors It would be great if someone can actually prove outriggers can withstand crazy swell and waves. I have 2 sets, but never have installed them when I am out there with 4-6 feet swells.
no, I moved them far enough back so they are not in the way. You could put them up front depends on the kayak you have. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Do you have any idea the diameter of the tube that attaches to the float? I ordered this kit after watching the video but want to upgrade to heavier duty floats
@@BTROutdoorsI think he meant the diameter of the black tube that holds the pontoons on either end. I would also like to know if it's not too much trouble.
I bought a sit on top kayak to fish from but for the life of me I can barely keep from flipping over, let alone try o fish from. I’m 6’2” and about 270lbs. My pelican kayak is rated at 325lbs so should be ok. These look like they may be the answer I’ve been looking for. Do you think these would stabilize my kayak enough for me to be comfortable to fish from?
No I have not, I usually wait for nice days to fish. Never liked rough water but had some boats fly past me and they held up very well to the boats wake.
There really is not a brand name, I got a set off walmart.com and I got the other set off amazon. Look in the other comments, I should have links. If you can't find them please let me know

I agree with everything you said, thanks for watching and thanks for the information
Well said.
And maybe if you just don’t want to worry about standing in the tippy kayak.
Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I needed to see. About to purchase a couple sets for both of my kayaks now.
You will love them, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching

U clips is the name for the brackets that hold the bars in place
Thanks and thanks for watching

I really like mine, makes me feel so much more secure. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Can you flip the bar 180 degrees so that the floats are higher off the water to reduce drag?
Yes you could, I use it like that because I need the stability. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Thanks for the video and your time
Good stuff! You have helped me make up my mind. I'm going to them myself lol thanks much appreciated
no problem, it took me awhile to find the right setup. My balance in not good, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
I wonder how these can be setup without interfering with an anchor trolley system installed
@@Lycan_24_7 not sure, I don't use a trolley system. But I might have to look into it. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment
I installed a set on my Hobie PA 14 as I tend to fish very rough waters.
They should work just fine, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching

What kayak is that? Looks almost like my Basscreek but longer.
Pelican sit on top 10 feet, I need a larger kayak for my size but this one does great. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching

have you tried those pontoons in 5-6 feet or more swells with 5-7 seconds intervals out in the ocean?
@@Dragonlord9I have not, I live about 10 hours from the ocean... only rivers and lakes
