When a "Quick Flip" Goes Wrong: FRUSTRATING Side Table Makeover

- CHARITY CHALLENGE! I challenged other furniture flipping RUclipsrs to flip a piece of furniture and donate the piece or the proceeds of the sale of the piece to charity or someone in need.
Playlist link: • 2023 Furniture Flippin...
I thought this little mid century side table would be the perfect charity flip. Single side tables don't typically sell well, and it was a great opportunity for me to show how I tackle simple projects. Turns out, removing that old damaged finish was ANYTHING but simple, and it was the single most frustrating flip of the year. Am I happy with the end results? Not really. But I did what I could, and it's certainly going to be able to be used and loved. It just wasn't what I was picturing in my head for the final result.
Be sure to curl up on the couch and watch the whole playlist, as these talented folks flip furniture for the sake of others. ❤️ Everyone wins here, but I WILL be donating a prize to a special winner of the group.

Although that side table was problematic, it gave you, and us, another learning opportunity about what to try, and try again, in order to get the piece where you want it to be. I think it turned out superb! Oh, and thank you for issuing this excellent challenge to the other refinishers to support charity. 💞💗💖
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Love this table!! Would love to have it. Thanks for the video. ❤❤❤❤❤
Girl, you are so much more patient than I am. Fire would have become an option at some point for removal.
🤣 I'm having a good laugh picturing that! 😉
That actually would have removed the finish wouldn't it
@@TranscendFurnitureGalleryDid you suffer any damage from that hurricane last week? I hope not.❤
A blow torch! 🔥🤣👍
Actually, would a heat gun assist removing most finishes?
Murphy's Law strikes again!. The table looks beautiful. It's always fascinating to watch you paint the replacement veneer. I's like wait a magic trick in slow motion. It's awesome you're donating two pieces to a good charity.👍👍
Thank you so much for watching!
I love how you work through the problems that arise, which gives the rest of us confidence and hope to not give up. I know the pain of finishes not coming off and love how you tackled it. The four letter words have flown more than once and I feel it's justified! Lol It's awesome that you work that hard on a donation piece. It's says alot about your character, but those of us who have watch your videos already know, and admire, the woman you are!
Thank you very much Tom, I really appreciate that!! ❤️
I think that the finished product is lovely. The fact that you rescued this side table from being trashed to a lovely addition to anyone's home speaks to your hard won experience, talent, and determination. Kudos
Thank you kindly!
This was timely for me….I was putting together a new grill today….I figured 3-4 hours at the most. Nope. 7.5 hours later I finally finished it, after ruining 5 bits and having to go borrow a different kind from my brother due to a manufacturing screw up. A lot of 🤬 here, too!! 😬😬
The side table's final tone is rich and sumptuous; it practically glows! Good on you for making these donations of resources, time and effort to great causes.
I'm so glad you like how it turned out Gina. Thank you so much for the support!! 😃
Oh my goodness - I tried to refinish the matching coffee table and it was also a nightmare! I don’t know what top coat Deilcraft put on these tables but it’s some sort of witchcraft and sorcery 😂
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had problems with them!
You did a great job as always. Happy to see you and your partner and fuffy babies safe.
Thank you very much! 😀
It is nice to know that although you worked very hard on this, you donated it. I think it looks lovely and hope it brings joy to whom ever gets it in the end. Thanks for being "sustainably" conscious!
Thank you so much!
Can’t wait!! Glad y’all are safe from the storms recently…
Thank you so much!
While you were showing your technique for painting on the grain over the pressboard you should know that there was a point where I couldn’t see that the area was painted even though you continued to work on it. Your painted work repairs are exceptional! I’d like to own one of your pieces just for the “I spy” enjoyment of trying to find the repair.
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
As always, you did a fantastic job rescuing a beautiful piece and returning it to usability. I hope whoever gets this appreciates it for many years to come, because you've given it a lovely refresh!
Thank you very much!
I recently moved from an isolated home in the woods to an apartment. I now have to be mindful of my frustrated expletives when hanging art and shelves and dealing with my "nemesis" : wall anchors.
Beautiful result Angie!
Or have super understanding neighbours! What a change for you - I hope the adjustment is going ok for you!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery You are so kind. I'm 70 and it was just time. Thanks!!
The little table came out beautiful- maybe not what you’d envisioned for it, but definitely something people can happily own and enjoy for years. Also, yay for bonus bunny footage!
Thank you very much!
You are a true artist. And giving your talent to help charity makes you a true humanitarian.❤
Thank you so much! 🙂
If I lived closer I would buy this table in a heartbeat. It’s beautiful!!!
Thank you very much! 🙂
Angie you have the patience of a saint, and as always you have done a great job for a worthy cause
Thank you very much Stacie!
Sometimes the smallest pieces are the biggest pain in the a## i feel like it turned out amazing and all your hard work was worth all the effort!! Thank you for hosting this challenge!!!
You're so welcome!
You absolutely did a wonderful job on this table. Try not to be so hard on yourself give yourself some grace it IS beautiful. sometimes we need to tell ourselves. It’s good enough I know it’s hard. Take care of yourself sweetie. Stay safe and know in the back of your head everything you do for these charities is absolutely awesome never stop. you make a difference and that’s what counts.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
Love the darker colour that you gave it. It made for a far richer-looking finish than I believe it would have had when new. It really elevated that little table. If some of the pieces you've worked on could feel and talk like humans, I'm sure many of them would suffer from imposter syndrome. They were never intended to look that good; and yet, here they are. :D
Haha!! I love it!! Thank you, as always!!! ❤️
It may have been a pain to refinish, but I think it turned out great! Your talent and determination are awesome! Love your work.
I'm so glad!! 😀
Is it possible the coating in the top is from years of a waxy furniture polishing? Didn’t know if that would form a hard bond or not. Great redo!
No this wasn't any kind of wax or polish. It's whatever they finished the table with - hellish stuff. Thanks so much for watching!
Well done Angie! You have more patience than I have! It looks super and has gone to support a charity. Well worth all your effort in doing it.
Thank you so much for that!
It is frustrating when things don't go the way you planned, but it is a very cute pice and it turned out very nice. Thank you for giving your time and items to good causes.❤
You are so welcome!
That poor little table with probably a mystery meat aftermarket finish! I am impressed nevertheless that you didn't back away from it. You saved a piece from an early death and you helped another being in need, maybe more.
Thank you for all you do!
You're so welcome! Thank YOU for watching!
After watching all of the nine other entrants, Angie, if you are taking user comments/votes into consideration at all, I am voting for Maria and her restoration. Although the painted pieces are all well done, all quite different and a major change, I simply prefer the wood to the paint. Once again, thanks for sponsoring a challenge supporting charities. 💗💖
You're very welcome! Thank you so much!
It may not be your favorite piece, but you brought it back to life and allowed its beauty to shine. The buyer undoubtedly will be very happy that you engaged in this resurrection. And that you did it for charity! Wow! You totally rock!
Wow, thank you!
Hi Angie! Wow, that stand was a real hassle for you. I wouldn't be surprised to see you throwing up your hands and painting it. OR taking it out on the driveway and running over it until the whole thing was a pile of splinters! I think it turned out quite pretty. Good move to donate it and the dressing table. Little huggies for the bun-buns! 🐰🐰🐰💓💓💓
Thank you so much! 🙂
That was a very tough piece!! I wonder if someone could have put epoxy resin on that top? I love watching your videos, and love to see you donate to the charities. Y’all are good people!!😊❤
I'm still not sure what it was, I just hope to never deal with it again! 😉
I think it turned out very nice. Love the color and so nice of you to donate the piece. You find the greatest furniture to flip. Makes me want to go digging through thrift shops again. I always thought searching was one of the best parts of flipping.
Thank you so much for watching!
Love your tenacity ❤
Thank you very much!
I bought a small table from the thrift store that I could see had potential, and it "nearly brought me to my knees"!
It was painted a Pepto-Bismol pink, and when I tried to strip it, I discovered that it was pine wood. It turned mushy when it got wet.
Eventually I did get it refinished and it turned out great! But getting there was h*ll.
Probably a 'hostess' table where cooked meats are cut on it in flat bottom hot trays/platters. A restaurant or dining room side table so to speak. Treated with very thick heat-resistant lacquer. The scooped edge frame of the top catches any errant cooking liquids when serving from it.
No, it's nowhere near tall enough for that. Thanks so much for watching!
Angie, you really did do an amazing job with that little table. Love your work, your thoughtfulness to details and your generous heart. Love to you, your partner, the kitties and the bunnies! ❤❤
Thank you so much!
Considering what you started with...Wow! So happy you got through the storm!
Thank you so much!
Well that's the best anyone could have done, even if it wasn't what you had envisaged. Patience is a virtue, so well done .
Thank you kindly!
Wow! Worth every second. I remember! But then, I am 74 years and a Highlander in Scotland. Lol
I always learn something from your videos and appreciate all that you do from helping the bunnies to keeping usable things (which you transform in beauty) out of the landfills.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that!
@TranscendFurnitureGallery thanks for giving back to the community. I live by the motto "see a need, fill a need " when I can.
You have a real talent for creating woodgrain. I've been struggling with making the wood grain on palm-trees in my bathroom. The way you did this...something clicked for me...thanks
You have a lot of patience 😂 it looked great when it was finished ❤🇬🇧🇬🇧
I try!! 😂 This piece sure tested it though!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery you did a grand job xx
As always, you did an excellent job! Well Done.
Thank you so much!
Angie- is there a way to renew the darker brown of the walnut that I see on the inside of the solid walnut dresser I’m refinishing? When I look at the inside it is the beautiful deep brown I want. I know the outside is faded. Is their a way to get that back that isn’t stain? If not, what type of stain should I use? I think the dresser is from mid to late 1800’s. It’s an Empire style with a wishbone mirror (according to Mr Google) I almost forgot to say “beautiful job on that table!” More patience than should be needed! Just magnificent!
It came out very nice , and it's for a good cause as well !
Yes, thank you!! 🙂
It looked so innocuous! I think it still turned out beautiful. I know both pieces will be really appreciated by lucky winners. I was wondering, since you’re not able to ship outside your country…what can people elsewhere do to support your charities?
I could feel your pain. Well done great job. 😊
Thank you so much! 🙂
New subscriber here. I'm learning so much from your videos! What do you think is best for restoring wood that has a mottled appearance? Stripper soaked into some areas more than others.
That piece gave you a lot of trouble but I think it turned out really great. And giving it to a charity makes it even more special that you made it look great! I live in Canada as well and I was wondering if you had to pick another choice besides Odies oil to put on a raw wood piece what would it be? Just a finish not a stain, some other type of wipe on finish.
What a fantastic way to raise donations ❤ brilliant that you were able to complete this table and also donating the other beautiful piece of furniture ❤
Thank you kindly! ❤️
That table looks like a great candidate for a leather inlay (says someone who knows nothing about real furniture) 😊
Really enjoyed this one especially. I am a senior and my parents had a radio like that when I was a child. Thank you.
Hi Angie! Great challenge. :D Where do we go to tell you our favorite?
Was the finish nitrocellulose? I have had a booger of a time getting it off old guitars before.
It glows! So pretty. Good luck to everybody.
Great job again🎉❤️🇨🇦
Thank you 🤗
I was looking for Nacho. He's adorable.
Bunnies ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Btw, I can't believe how you managed to create wood in that patch! I can't even tell. Amazing!!!
Thank you so much!
At the end you asked, “Am I happy with this table?” and in my mind I imagined you saying, “I am happy to be done with this piece of sh*t project.” (That’s what I say when encountering problem after problem LOL). I think it is beautiful now. My current project will likely be darker than I wished, too, but it will be DONE. Hooray!!
Exactly!!! Thank you so much for watching!
You have a much better temperment than I... lol I would have been stomping, spitting angry. I wouldn't have given up, but I would have cussed a streak.
Oh believe me, I did. The curse words were freeing flowing. Thanks for watching!
Wow, nice video, it’s just what I am going through! I am refinishing a small antique wall cabinet, started the stripper and nothing……. Probably reapplied 5 or 6 times to get it off. Used stripper, scraping, steel wool with stripper Yikes! Thought I was going crazy, not a fun project but I will finish it soon I hope! Thank you!!!
You're so welcome! I'm glad I could help!
Wise words from my father whenever I was being a perfectionist over something I was adept at (usually music) but those appreciating my talent weren't: "Nobody will know. They're just glad you're doing it."
It looks beautiful, and I'm sure someone will treasure it!
Thank you very much!! ❤️
I really enjoy your videos! I recently discovered your youtube channel! You are a fantastic teacher! Very inspirational! I’ve watched a marathon of your videos all weekend! Keep it up! You rock!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying my content!! 😀
I was excited recently to learn you are Nova Scotian-like me! (Northern Cape Breton). They were awesome videos of the lightening strikes!
I'm fairly obsessed with your work and videos. The editing is phenomenal-such talent all the way around! Yours is the best entertainment on RUclips! I love what you're all about. Thank you for all you do ❤
Glad you like them! Thank you so much for this fantastic comment!! I really appreciate it.
It is beautiful 😊😊
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm a fan of darker furniture, so I probably like this more than many. 😊
You do amazing work and I've recommended your channel to many.
My favorite in the charity was hard to pick, but I decided on Asking Spot.
Thank you! 😊
I totally understand that this table was not easy Angie but, you did an amazing job with it! You never disappoint us. 👏🏻❤️👏🏻❤️👏🏻❤️
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Frustrating piece for sure but, wow, you are resourceful and determined! I’m a new furniture flipper and I’ve been very discouraged lately but seeing you work through this piece is inspiring and encouraging. Love your videos! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh Angie, I refinished an exterior door that was in our kitchen,,.which I thought would be “easy breezy”. The finish was that yellow-orangey tan that was popular in the 80’s. It was just like this table. I was ready to put it in the dump. I scraped, I stripped (not me) and I sanded. And then I did it again. I finally got it “good enough” and called it a day. The other side that was in the kitchen looked great painted white. Whew!!!
I felt your pain.
Yikes! So much work for you! I don't blame you one bit, my forearms were on fire.
Even inanimate furniture will, if treated fairly, reveal its character and Oh didn't you do a wonderful job coaxing this table. Angie, first among strippers🤭
Haha Tony!! Thank you for that this morning!! 🤣
So. Much. Work. But for a great cause, and good on you for sticking with it. Someone will use and love that table for many years to come. Thanks for hosting the challenge. It's amazing what people can and WILL do to help others.
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Watching you deploy your artist skills in copying woodgrain always amazes me. I would have tossed that tabletop before long before it gave up that crazy old finish. Great job!
Wow, thanks! 😀
I once got to remove varnish from a mid-century coffee table. And after the chemical stripper has done literally nothing, I immediately knew it's "fantastic" polyester varnish. Which you can either remove mechanically (sand/scape) or with heat (which wasn't my opinion as the top was veneer). So, it took me 9h to sand and scrape and not damage the veneer. I so feel your pain with this table ❤
It was a job and a half! My forearms were on fire!
Whew! It's always good to see someone so talented solve problems, though sorry for you that this was such a *@#$% 😉 Lovely end product, as always, Angie!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh gosh i HATE refinishing deilcrafts lol did one and NEVER again! Takes much much longer for some reason
It was bruuuuutal! Deilcraft had their own multilayer finish they called “duradeil mar-resistant finish”, often referred to as “party proof”. I can’t seem to find any articles showing exactly what that is comprised of, but it a bugger to get rid of. lol
I understand your tendency to self criticize - I’m also one of those that fights perfectionist tendencies. In this case tho, I think your criticism is misplaced, or, perhaps, too critical. The table is lovely and shows the love of the process and art that you invested into it. You take each project as a challenge - taking something functional (or potentially so) but old, unattractive, wobbly or broken, definitely unloved, then using skill and creativity make it new again.
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
You made a very pretty side table out of that. Don't short change what you accomplished with that one. You could have very well burned it up from your frustration with stripping it. Blessings on your day.😊
Thank you very much for watching! 🙂
Hi Andrea, I just had a similar difficult finish situation with a vintage Ethan Allen triple dresser. I think the dresser is solid maple. When I tried sanding the top with 80 grain nothing came off. I tried scrapping but like you it was clear that wasn’t going to give me any results either. I wasn’t sure if it was shellac or lacquer so I first tried denatured alcohol…Nothing. Then I went looking through the shelves and found some old lacquer thinner. It did dissolve some of the finish and made a gooey mess. I ended up scrubbing off the entire finish, little section by section using steel wool lacquer thinner and paper towels. It took me nearly two hours. When I was done and sanded the top I was careful to use 180 grit as to not blow through the veneer. Turns out it was a solid wood piece with routed edges and after sanding through the grits, the top came out looking great…so I also muttered some words which cannot be printed here..but so worth the effort! Thanks for being such an inspiration and saving these sad unloved pieces..and being generous!
You're so welcome! Just a little FYI but my name is actually Angie. 🙂 Sounds like you had your work cut out for you with that piece, wow! Good for your sticking it out, I bet it's gorgeous now!
New subscriber from New Zealand here, really loving your content and it is really inspiring me. I've taken some of your tips and am using them to help sand back an old Rimu table of my daughters. One issue I have is she had gauged out some parts with a pen drawing on it and although sanded back, whenever I put any cleaning liquid on, the scratches still seem to show darker than the rest of the wood . Do you have any videos covering this? Thanks heaps 😊
I do have some videos posted that deal with extreme scratching etc. If you scroll through my posted content under the Videos heading, you can see everything I have up. This one specifically comes to mind though, that may help - ruclips.net/video/vKT1fsifLRY/видео.html
Could totally relate with the stripper! You did great with the table top corner - I couldn’t see any damage. Nice work! Thanks for hosting this challenge!
You're so welcome! Thank YOU for watching! 🙂
Angie, you apparently have the patience of Job. If I had to deal with such a stubborn finish, I probably would have sanded it as smooth as possible and painted it. It's a lovely little table, though, and will make someone very happy once it's auctioned off.
Thank you kindly! 🙂
Don't beat yourself up. I think that you did an amazing job. I think that you still have mad skills. Cheers
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words.
I dont know if it would have helped, but sometimes i put plastic wrap over the stripper and leave it overnight. Mostly because i have run out of swears, but, you know😅 came out amazing!
Circa 1850 only takes about a minute to actually work so it would technically slow me down by covering it. For less potent strippers, it is beneficial though.
Looks like maybe it had a linseed oil undertone to try and seal it, and it never cured before a toner finish was added over it.. very tough to remove. As always Angie, job well done. You do our profession justice with your logical approach. Respect.
Could be! Thank you so much for watching!
Angie I think that is a cute little end table and I am glad you saved it from the landfill. I think we are our biggest critics because we can still see the flaws in everything we make. No one else does but we do. You take so much care in what you do and it shows. Sometimes, like with this little end table, you have to step back and say "It looks fine". And that is what you did but it bugs you. LOL You are doing great and I have loved every piece of furniture you have done (in the last year in a half, which is when I found your channel). Keep up the good work for a good cause! I will see you next time! Take care!
Thank you so much Nancy! I really appreciate it!
I would have had the FLAME THROWER out at about 3rd try….. you are so patient and kind.
Awe, thank you! 😀
I’ve dealt with the same or similar finish before. It was some poly or some other plastic that was impervious to all strippers known to humanity. After scraping and even using a heat gun I sanded it with 60 grit ! There’s still finish on it! At least you succeeded, very nicely I would say. As for profanity, I’m all for it as long as it’s done with passion!
Never fear - there was a TON of passion in the words streaming out of my mouth lol. Thank you so much for watching!
It’s a cute little end table. These older pieces tend to be light and easy to move compared to modern furniture which tends to be massive (and yet the end tables today have very little storage space)!
Thank you so much! 😊
Once again you have saved a lovely piece of furniture. Or should I say, you've made some furniture into a lovely piece. Awesome job! The bunnies are so sweet. Oh and give your kitties a smooch for me too.
Thank you very much!
Oops. I apparently interpreted myself! Anyway. It was good to see your perseverance in completing the table. Great job!
Lol! Thank you so much for watching!! 😀
How interesting was that finish? I love the way it turned out, very pretty in color and the shape🥰👌❤️, good job Angie!
Thank you! Cheers!
It didn't turn out how you'd have liked it to and it was a lot of sweat equity for such a small piece, but it went to a good cause and you should feel good about that aspect. Also, thank you for taking us on the journey of some of the struggles, you powered through and it's all we can do. Keep your ultimate goal of less furniture in landfills, donating/charity fundraisers, and your art. Great job. ❤
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for your videos. I came on YT to learn how to restore furniture. I have seen 3 YTubers - one is flipping furniture without a skerrick of personal protection worn. No love in it at all. The other she was great to watch because they were beginner videos. And then there is you.. I see how much you love what you are doing - it is absolute passion and it comes through. You have respect for the process and the furniture.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I don't know if it would help with your type of stripper but bagging/ sealing with bin bags or plastic wrap inproves the effectiveness of some strippers.
whatever you use you must first do a test to check for any reaction with the materials against the stripper itself . Big items will take some creative thinking if it works.
Just found your channel and you have a new UK subscriber, love your attention to detail and the moment when you discover beautiful wood grain and bring it to life again, you just can't beat it.
My stripper works so quickly wrapping it would simply slow me down. Thank you so much for watching and welcome to my channel!
Your frustrations made for a very educational video, for which we thank you. And your hard work made for a lovely piece of furniture, the sale of which will help disabled people who cannot do for themselves, for which we also thank you. You totally rock.
You are so welcome Deb! Thank YOU for leaving this comment. ❤️
You are my endless inspiration and teacher-learned so much from you ❤️. And just when there is a time when I'm ready to give up , you videos always keep me going ❤
I'm so glad I can help! Thank you so much for watching and leaving this comment - I appreciate it.
Wow, how did you even pull this off?!!! I know I say this every time, but you are amazing, not only in your skills, but in your heart ❤. love all that you do and that you contribute to this world!
Thank you so much 😀
Am watching another video where you talk about doing a skill share to build your self confidence. You are my favorite furniture restorer to watch. Your steps are clear, you point out problematic areas and your taste level is elegant. But, my favorite reason is you have a lovely voice to listen to. Soft, liquid, musical vouce. I also value your commitment to saving these old pieces and bunny rescue. Thank you for serving in a modest sustainable way.
I'm so glad you enjoy my content. Thank you so much for watching!
On this one, I kinda wish that you had done the reveal in the beginning and then showed us the process of reclamation. As always....Bravo!
Thanks for watching!
It may not be what you were looking for, but it's beautiful!! Nice Job!! So much better than anything I could do.
Awe, thank you so much! I'm glad you like how it turned out.
I encountered a 1970's microwave cart with a similar finish. Don't know what it is, but omg!
Ugh!! It's awful!
You are a trooper Angie. I would have tossed that nightmare to the curb. But once again you pulled off a miracle. Great job.
It nearly ended up there. Lol
