  • Here's Pixel 3 vs. LG V40 Camera Comparison including photos and videos! UPDATE: See my full review of Pixel 3 here:
    • Pixel 3 Review - Why Y... Over the weekend, I took the Pixel 3 and the LG V40 out to an ice rink in San Francisco and took many photos and videos. This was actually pretty interesting comparison as I didn't expect the LG V40 to come anywhere near the Pixel 3, which probably is the king of smartphone photography. For videos, both seemed to do well with stabilization, I really didn't see either cameras doing better than another other than LG V40 having 2 extra back cameras, which gives you a lot more options. What's interesting to me was that while I took many photos of my daughter and myself during ice skating, most of the photos looked clearer with the Pixel 3. Now, while LG V40 photos weren't as clear as Pixel 3 in most photos, I actually prefer the look of the LG V40, especially the skin tones and the V40 tends to bring out more details of the shadows. This could be a personal preference but definitely the LG V40 kept up well to the Pixel 3. See full article here:

    Super proud of LG for their progress this year. Almost talked myself into getting the V40 but my V30 is just right for me.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 5 лет назад +1

      I feel they didn't do enough when there are phones like the Mate 20 Pro, Xs and Pixel. For now I'm moving to the Mate 20 Pro from my V30. If LG gets their act together next year, I'll move back. But for now the V40 is largely underwhelming compared to what the rest put out. :-(

    • @sidersproductions941
      @sidersproductions941 5 лет назад +1

      @@SDav21 how is it largely underwhelming? I mean did you just watch the video? It keeps up with one of the supposed best smartphone cameras although I agree that I would much rather have the Mate 20 Pro myself because of that camera system. It even has more video recording modes and capabilities than the Pixel 3 does so I'm not sure what else you're wanting from the V40.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 5 лет назад +4

      @@sidersproductions941 I think the video wasn't spot on in my opinion. The pictures on the V40 were not good for a 2018 phone as my V30 seems to take similar images apart from the front camera. But we have Huawei out here giving 3d facial scanning, in display scanner, one of the biggest batteries, one of the fastest processors, amazing (not just good) cameras and a bunch more. LG should've done more. The V40 is not enough to upgrade from the V30. Huawei did much more in 1 year. The V40 is good but there are phones that are excellent. Makes me sad because I love LG but they desperately need to get their act together if they want to play with Huawei, Apple and Samsung.

    • @sidersproductions941
      @sidersproductions941 5 лет назад +2

      @@SDav21 well I can't persuade you from what you saw. For me everything was good and that's only in auto mode which has never been LG's strong point. You have a whole, capable manual mode to take care of the rest and for me, it always does. But Huawei really is on a whole nother level. They've done things this year that neither Samsung, Apple, or Google has pulled off so kudos to them. I'll most likely get one next year because what they're doing is next level especially with the 40mp sensor, night mode, and 3x optical zoom and digital zoom.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 5 лет назад +1

      @@sidersproductions941 Yes. I will miss my LG but I see Huawei has implemented some nice manual mode controls too. I will miss the headphone jack but at least Huawei gives the adapter and USB C earphones. Other than that I am sold.

    11:23 V40 is not having trouble blurring out snacks on the left. The relative distance of the snacks on the left to the lens is roughly the same distance as your daughter to the lens. As objects appear further away, they tend to get more and more blurry. This is true shallow depth of field. What Pixel 3 is doing is quite literally extracting the subject and blurring everything around it. People shouldn't really confuse shallow depth of field for blur. The V40 is miles ahead of Pixel in terms of scientific accuracy of the blur effect.

    Now that was a very fair review. Kudos for not forgetting about the V40 like everyone else did. Seems like LG pissed off all the influencers. I really like the Pixel's sharp detail. But I also like how LG works with shadows. Hahaha, the front camera will probably be perfect for me. I really wish the standard rear camera was a lot sharper. Can you get a sharper image from the V40's standard rear cam if you are in manual mode?

    Can you give me an idea of how good / fast autofocus is on the v40? One of my biggest complaints with all of LG's phones has been slow auto focus and blurry pictures. I take a lot of animal pictures in my job, the pixel 2 XL has been virtually flawless with shutter speed and focus. I would hate to switch over to a phone that takes forever to focus and creates blurry pictures. Any feedback you have on this would be greatly appreciated!

    Great review. I ordered the V40 online and am currently waiting for it to ship (backordered). I took some selfies of myself with the V40 today in the Verizon store and they looked similar to the ones you took. I'm not a fan of the way it smoothes out the skin. It looks too processed. The Pixel selfies look more realistic and clear. I hope a software update fixes this. Also, the ice in skating rink looks more accurate/white with the Pixel than the much warmer tone on the V40. But maybe you shot this near the "golden hour" in which case the V40 would be more accurate. The audio on the V40 was much better. I can't wait for my V40 to arrive!

    Max, I love your reviews. I started in the V series because of your vids and one thing I have noticed is the LG V series cameras shine when used exclusively in manual mode. Yet, almost every review or comparison video uses auto modes to do the review. I purchase phones with the camera in mind as my primary feature and almost exclusively use them in manual mode. V40 had a yellow hue. Look at the ice and the kitty faces on the sweater. Pixel 3 did have some dark spots where detail was lost. LG audio is not filtered out like the Pixel's. The Pixel wins at pics a vids but if they don't fix the audio, the V40 will be my new companion.

However after this review and other's I'll have to pass, I gap between flagship photos is getting more narrow nowadays. So for me it come's down to audio & video quality, yes the pixel 3 is wonderful but the audio is atrocious and not worth my money. The microphone for the Pixel 3 actually does seem to be a lot better in windy conditions than the LG v40. (although I believe the LG phones have a Wind Cutting setting that you may not have enabled) I find that the v40 sounds better with less wind though. Well music festivals usually involve lots of lighting and loud music. V40 is great for that since you can use manual mode for video and audio. But raw low light performance of Pixel is much better. Audio recording at concerts is amazing with V40 or any of LGs as they can cut the sound down.

      Thank you for the reply. And thats good to know the different between audio and photo low light. Im leaning towards the LGv40 i guess like you said its whoever using it and their preference

    The question is how does the V40 manage in RAW. Also, indoor auto white balance of the V40 is too warm. V40 looks like it is always in HDR mode. I use the V20 in manual mode and sometimes in RAW.
    Raw will tell us if the pixel 3 sharpness is due to a better lens or V40 has too strong smoothing in auto mode.

    Wow thanks for the video, I have my doubts with the LG V40, but this video give me a reason to buy it. The sounds of the video clips the V40 destroys the Pixel, and in some photos the V40 are better, thanks Max for the review...

    I 100% agree with the comments regarding LG picture processing. I have been thinking that Samsung and LG wash out faces and make them brighter compared to apple which gave people more of a tan and warm hue. This if you think about it, matches beauty ideals in those different parts of the world. White people want tans and Asian people want to be whiter

    I have the v40 I think your videos are very insightful I think you tell a lot of Truth I just think the camera and certain situations on the pixel 3 is better and then in certain situations that the camera all of E40 is better it's a toss-up personal preference

    Great comparison video, Max.
    A few random thoughts from a novice -
    - The audio issue with the Pixel 3 seems to be that it is trying too hard to do away with wind noise when it's outside and the result is audio that is too muted. The audio on the Pixel 3 inside the skating rink was just fine. The V40's audio was OK - is there a setting to reduce wind noise? If not, LG would do well to include one with a software update. As for video, both phones did just fine.
    - Have to disagree about the selfies with the front-facing cameras. LG is overdoing it with the smoothing and the person has a sort of waxy look in the face. Something that LG could fix with an update Given LG's track record, I wouldn't hold my breath on that, however. Why they released the V40 with Android Oreo is beyond me.
    - I was surprised at how much better the V40 picture was at the 6:19 mark. That f1.5 aperture lens looks like it's doing its job by letting more light in. Why Google didn't upgrade the camera hardware on their phone is beyond me.
    - Grilled squid?
    - The V40, despite having better hardware, still struggles with low light. The V40 looks to be an improvement over the V30 and the G7 but they still have work to do.
    - Overall, the gap between the Pixel 3 and the V40 is very narrow. If Google wants to keep crowing about how their camera is the best you can buy then they are going to have to step up their game next year and at least put a better sensor on there.

    The only way to truely see how good each camera phone is in quality would be to have photos taken with a professional dslr to give a true representation of what the picture actually is like and THEN compare the same photos taken with both camera phone's in AUTO mode to compare detail, colour accuracy, blow outs, sky highlights against the dslr's photo etc.. You said you prefer the V40 portraits to the pixel 3 but others like myself prefer more natural tones... It's a catch 22 situation that just comes down to the actual user's likes... Great video, would like someone to take on board my above comment..

    I just thought of something: the V40 has an option to remove the background in portrait mode, so that you can separate the subject & do a cool trick I'll explain below.
    What you can do easier with the V40 than the Pixel (& probably most of other phones), is composition, with the isolated subject you took apart, & the background that you can shoot seperatly (just without the subject), by playing with manual focus (focusing closer will blur everything obtically vs numerically, & that way you can control how much blur you want).
    It obviously requires more work & using a dedicated soft like Lightroom/Photoshop then, but I just point out that with that "Multimedia tool", you have the ability to go that far to obtain an outstanding result!

    I have to say the Pixel 3 makes much "better" pictures. There is obviously more AI trickery going on which you should do in post process I think. It should be optional. But there is more information and more realism in the pixel 3 pictures.
    I'd love to know if the same quality can be achieved using gcam ports for the LG V40.
    Thanks for the video!

    I wanted my 2nd mobile to be the V40 (I’ve got an iOS phone already) but after looking at the camera shots & video you’ve shown, even with that big forehead of the Pixel 3, I’m a fan of the Pixel.
    now it’s between the Pixel & the V40

    Google released a response to why the sound quality is so tinny. The Google spokesman said that they made the mic avoid background noise and picks up the important sounds. I guess that's why it sounds so tinny. The LG mic sounds fuller but damn that background noise sorta sounds muffled. Has anyone noticed that?
