Tip! The game has a free demo on Steam that lets you play 2-3 islands, a good way to test if you would like it or not. You can transfer your progress to the full game if you complete the demo.
One of my favorite games growing up was Commandos and I didn't know there was a genre just like it. This looks like a great way to channel that nostalgia for me.
Just finished the main story of shadow gambit, really satisfied with everything they presented with this game. From shadow tactics to desperado 3 to this one, Mimimi really made me hooked on tactical stealth games even though I am not very good at them. What I really appreciate is that not only the game mechanics and stage design is good, from story to art to voice acting to music they all delivered so well. Can't wait to unlock jester and hope he has some crew story or interaction I can see. He seems really nice : )
your ability to just clear games is astonishing! Especially with this year of so many great games. Its like the Mortismal Train just plows through its course.
Its actually not the same enemy placement for every mission as told in the review. Like overall for the islands it stays the same, but the missions and the difficulties change some setups. Higher difficulties add more enemies or swap out weaker enemies for stronger ones. And usually the missions have additional setups unique to them.
Yeah. I played the mission to get the relic of wood from Dread vine's cove, first with Suleidy, then with Toya. The former can spawn a concealing bush while the latter can place a beacon which he can then teleport to from anywhere. Where as the former can creep close to enemies, Toya needs to often take an indirect route to get around enemy sight lines. I remember one of the missions involved infiltrating a central stronghold, and Toya's teleport was great for that. I placed the beacon in a bush, snuck in and kill a guard, then teleported to the bush.
You are an absolute god for 100%’ing this already. I LOVE Mimimi stealth games. Desperados, Shadow Tactics and this game are all amongst my favorite games of all times. Anyways- I’ve played it every day since release and I’m at like 50% complete. Well done.
Thanks for covering this game, Mimimi deserves to be known, and, to me, 40€ isn’t expensive considering the quality and length of the game (it’s even 35€ on xbox right now). When you see RDR on PS4 at 50€…
Thank you for this review! I really wish Mimimi could find a way to implement more enemy variety without breaking their game. I understand why it's not an easy task, but it was my biggest gripe with Desperados 3 as well. Frankly, I'd be happy if the enemies had some different outfits at least. Desperados 3 had that with the basic guards, but in this game it seems like everyone is wearing that regular red.
Mimimi has basically revived the genre on its own. The few things I have seen from Shadow Gambit has already gotten me hyped. And that is with Desperados 3 still resting comfortable on my pile of shame.
Desperados 3 is fantastic, you MUST play it! I have played almost al the OG Commandos games, and would even dare to suggest that it's better. Well, better than the later ones certainly.
@Outmind01 I compeltely agree, having played OG Commandos games multiple times through the years, Desperados 3 has most to offer and is a more of a "whole" experience than basically anything I played from the genre. Can't wait to dig into this one, looks amazing.
The rate at which this man can 100% games is genuinely impressive. He has it down to a science, if he had enough time to dedicate to speed running some games I think he could be incredibly good at it
Reviews for this have been stellar, and while this genre is one I've only occasionally tried, this seems like the perfect opportunity to go all in. I love how much character is packed into the experience, and I have a particular soft spot for pirate stories so the setting is a great way to draw me in. Once I'm ready for a break from BG3, I'll definitely be picking this up.
This month is so crazy with releases tailor made for me: first Jagged Alliance 3, then Remnant 2 and BG3, En Garde! and Shadow gambit only to top it all off with armored core 6. Amazing, this is best gaming month I had for decades
@@sensoeirensenI don’t get your point, what you said applies for every game on my list except BG3. And even BG3 is very much a niche genre but managed to „go viral“. Sounds like you just want to dump on AC6 for the sake of it? Maybe because you think fromsoft is overrated? Either way, doesn’t really matter. I’m very confident AC6 will be a great game I‘ll enjoy a lot, just like the rest from my cute little list :)
@@tni333 Comparing BG3 and AC is quite a stretch though. DnD is BIG in the west, Western RPGs are big in the West, Larian has outstanding reputation since DOS2, Gundam etc. simply aren't even close to the same level. The MechSim genre died a good 20 years ago in the West, if not earlier (not saying AC6 is a classical MechSim, but when it comes to marketing imo they can be related) and it simply is true that FromSoft are playing way outside their wheelhouse with AC6, which could be good, could be bad. So i think it's fair to say it's a fairly big gamble and either way it will set the trajectory for the genre in the near future. In the end i don't care why people give it attention, i just hope they'll get what they are hoping for. If FromSoft's reputation is anything to go by i can't imagine the game being a complete disaster though. More broadly, Starfield and BG3 are indeed the big players in the Ring currently and at least imo there were a couple more really good releases this summer. Meaning, if it's not a "major" release, a lot of competition usually hurts sales. Will this translate into a flop ? No idea, depends on production costs and expectations i guess and i haven't looked into those. Saying AC6 doesn't have a few more hurdles in its way currently than it might have otherwise is simply denying reality though imo.
@@spacemonkeyentertainment6413 I’m not comparing anything, nor did I ever predict AC6 will be as successful as BG3. I just said this single month brought me a bunch of great games for my tastes.
@@tni333 Clearly you must have forgotten your reply to the guy that said AC6 would flop where you went as far as constructing a strawman arguement to dismiss his point of view. My contribution to the topic was to point out how there are very reasonable concerns as to why AC6 might underperform (though, again, i`m still not convinced that equates to a "flop") in the context of the other guy asking how people could enjoy it and it could still be a flop, because at the end of the day FromSoft has no interest in a dedicated niche audience, because dedication doesn`t mean more sales, a broader audience does. Now you might take offense to the word "comparison", but you yourself replied to AC6 being "niche" with "all those other games are niche too" and literally pointing out that this is even true for BG3. I told you why it's not "COMPARABLE" as in "not in the same league". Do with that what you will, but you really come off as unreasonably standoffish for no apparent reason. I hope you get over that. I don't care to discuss what games on my list are comparable or not or which was a financial success or not. Nothing you or that other dude said even remotely relates to my initial comment. I'll leave it at that and bid you adieu.
Your notes about the lack of enemy variety and repetitive placement make sense, and kind of make me wonder if it wouldn't have benefited from a more linear set of missions where you tackle each map once, similar to Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3. I'm also not 100% sure whether I prefer the weird fantasy setting and the like of this compared to the more grounded, real-world setting and artstyle of those other games, but that's entirely a personal preference, and this setting is also great.
All the previous games already have a grounded setting, I'm glad they went for more fantasy. I'm halfway through the game and not sure how I feel about the islands. On one hand it allows us to explore a map for shorter missions before going for a main one on the other they keep the enemies in the same place so that's not possible. Would be so much better if one time you went to an almost empty island and afterwards something happens and the island is full of guards in the next mission
I played the demo of shadow tactics bought the game for like £5 then played desperado 3 on gamepass it was going away soon so I rushed it and then played shadows tactics dlc I love theses games wish I could buy it but have to wait for sale as there many games that need to buy
Regarding the enemy variation and placement on islands I would like to add that many missions have unique enemy setups that can only be found in that specific mission. Also the enemy setups are different on higher difficulties.
One fun thing I had with this game is experimenting on different character synergies in order to cheese the missions. One such synergy I had most fun with is Gaelle, Teresa, and Quentin. Gaelle would shoot Teresa to a vantage point in the map where she can easily snipe enemies, and Quentin would hide in a bush nearby. As Teresa takes out targets, Quentin would reel in their corpses in order to retrieve her crossbow bolts. Rinse and repeat. I have cleared camp after camp using this cheese combo.
For me Suleidy was the cheese character by herself, all you need is a bush placement just outside of view range then pulling enemies towards you with her ability and you can literally clear majority of area's just with her pulling people out of others protecting view and immediately hide the bodies in the bush you put down.
Thanks for the video, and congrats on the code. Mimimi games are always well done, but they always run a bit too structured for me, and end up feeling more like puzzles than anything tactical. Onward to 300k. All glory to the algorithm.
Really enjoying this game, does exactly what it needs to with both mechanics and atmosphere encouraging you to try (and fail) in interesting ways without fear or remorse. Even the weak spot that you pointed out is to my a strength as doing the exact same enemy setup with a completely different crew is to me a brilliant option and design choice. Agree that a few more enemies would have raised this game from excellent to spectacular. I'll take excellent.
I'm playing the game a lot since release and I agree completely with you: the game offers a lot of fun, with the only downside worth mentioning is the lack of enemy variety.
This game surprised me how much I enjoyed it considering what it is and how little anyone really talks about it, I feel like a good full stealth game has been missing in the market recently over these stealth games where you end up setting the alarm off after 2 minutes and just have to go action the rest of the mission. My only thing im not looking forward to while currently at 50% completion is getting 100% completion by doing all these random challenges for every mission and every character, feels a bit OTT when it's done just for the sake of extending the run time when I'd be happier just having the game be 100% once you've done all the missions and crew tales with the challenges just being an extra thing rather than required for 100%.
NOT a game I would normally play...but what the heck I downloaded the Demo...dayummm any time I tried to play a different game all I could think about was maximizing Suleidy's abilities to help Afia Manicato. Well 14 hours in and still going...this game is a lot of fun. Its a buy for me.
The last level of the story is a MASSIVE difficulty spike. Even as someone who's played this type of game since the original Commandos (holy was that game hard), it still took every bit out of me to figure the last level out. Not only was it long, but it had elements and enemy formations that were never seen in any of the levels before.
It is on my wishlist and I definitely buy it because I love this "Pirates of the caribbean" setting. Actually Pirates of the Caribbean is my favorite Movie Franchise. I love Sea of Thieves too and I will definitely will love this game. But I want to finish Baldurs Gate 3 first.
I somewhat get where you're coming from with an island feeling repetitive once you clear it, but that only really works if you take the same team or almost the same team every time. Not all crewmates can handle situations the same way, so depending on which you take on a mission determines how you'd have to tackle each one. The only thing that really stays the same is whatever priority of enemies you have to take out, but the way in which you do that can vary. I only just completed the main story so the game hasn't felt very repetitive to me, but as I start grinding out badges I can imagine how that issue would arise. Though I'll likely just swap out which crew I take on each visit to an island to help mitigate the repetitive feeling.
So the new design of reusing the same maps but from different entry points hurts the variety compared to the other 2 ? I wish Mort had said if he thought it was better or worse than desperados 3.

This game is a buy, BUT i'm waiting for it to go on sale, it's too much at $35 right now.
Wish i could play it on PS4 😢
I'm not necessarily going to play this, but have a comment and a like in hopes we get to see more BG3 builds (Paladin wink wink nudge nudge) 😅
I main Linux and yes, the game runs perfectly, but Proton experimental should be avoided.
Sucks for the studio. I loved the variety they brought to the genre.
Love the esthetics of this game. UI Is so pleasant to look at
free comment.

Only an honor to 10 year old children.
I don’t like the guy’s ‘content’ but at least it’s more exposure for Mort.
Who?
Not for the first time.
I don't really like Asmon though.
Too bad the studio is closing down.
It's very unlikely there will be more of this kind of rtt games😢
