Lyrics:
Stepping out to Angellucci’s for my coffee beans
Checking out the movies and the magazines
Waitress she watches me crossing from the Barocco Bar
I’m getting a pickup for my steel guitar
I saw you walking out Shaftesbury Avenue
Excuse me talking I wanna marry you
This is the seventh heaven street to me
Don’t be so proud
You’re just another angel in the crowd
And I’m walking in the wild west end
Walking with your wild best friend
And my conductress on the number nineteen
She was a honey
Pink toenails and hands all dirty with money
Greasy hair easy smile
Made me feel nineteen for a while
And I went down to Chinatown
In the backroom it’s a man’s world
All the money go down
Duck inside the doorway gotta duck to eat
Right now feels alright now
You and me we can’t beat
And a gogo dancing girl yes I saw her
The deejay he say here’s Mandy for ya
I feel alright to see her
But she’s paid to do that stuff
She’s dancing high I move on by
The close ups can get rough
When you’re walking in the wild west end

It's 2024. If you are listening to this you have have a pretty damn good taste in music.
Right back atcha. This whole album is so chilled and laid back.
@CB-xr1eg it's outstanding 👏
takes me back to Earls Court 1980 living in a basement flat was good times and good music!!!!
Thank you. I agree, and likewise.
Oh, for the days of Pong!
I had a dream last night. I was walking with my son, who passed away this year. This song was playing in the background.
He was walking with you.
❤
God bless
@@jeffreycolvin9124 thank you
Music has such a powerful effect on grief. It’s a long road. Stay strong xxx
I remember often listening to this album at night with headphones on in the months after it came out. The line in this song “She made me feel 19 for awhile” always made me smile. I was *18* at the time. Now that I’m almost 63 it has a different ring to it. ☺️
l drive from Flint to Buffalo. I put this tape in as soon as l crossed that bridge.
My Dad loved Dire Straits this is the last song we sang together before we lost him to Cancer we sang loud and laughing when we got it wrong one of the best moments near the end
L
Tell me about it!
Same thing w/ me, I’m 55 and now a woman who makes you feel 19 again…. Magical!
haha cute
Mr. Knopfler handles his guitar likes it's another limb. Class act.
Totally agree
Rumour has it he was born with the guitar and his birth was hell for his mother.
I don't think any music lover underates him - he is acknowledged worldwide
If you watch him playing Telegraph Road in one of the many solos he just zones out as though he's thinking about plans for the weekend...amazing artist
This is probaly one of the best songs that i've ever heard.
Yes! I just wish I would have heard it sooner.
@@JarodCopeland same
Yep... Sigh...
Yes I totally agree reminds me of my dad.....
It is literally my very best song, mark picks so cool.
The title “Wild West End” (1978) refers to an area of London, England. Mark Knopfler moved to the capital after completing an English degree at Leeds University. Just like so many people, he enjoyed walking around the West End, always with an eye on the ladies. He spotted one distinctly attractive young woman in Shaftesbury Avenue, the very inspiration behind this song that clocks in at 4:42‼️
Another tune from the same LP, “In The Gallery” (1978), had its genesis in that same avenue, though in quite a different sort of encounter. 💚🎶💙
Once again thank you for the back story. The way Knopfler paints vignettes through his subtle lyrics is phenomenal.
@@MrSudeepdas Thank YOU!

Mark Knopfler is a living legend. 💖 💖 💖
FuckinA
His guitar solo near the end of "Tunnel of Love" is beautiful.
@@A47919 totally special
The Boys. 😂 love this ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The guitar has become a part of his body.
Great cord change brilliant
That is the only reason for the exceptional performance. There is no gap. No friction. No wasting of energy... and hence... you know
You bet
@@anilchadha3596 sorta took violin lessons so many years ago. Should've took Vocals!!
If its lucky! Wish it was you know who.🤗🤣🙏🌹🌹🌹
The hidden gem on their record. I love this song. It's always in my head
It's always in my head, too! And it is the hidden gem on this album! The lyrics are amazing!
Che armonia? Meravigliosa! Veri artisti? Ti senti con loro in armonia dolce amore! 🐕✋👑👼🤴❤❤❤❤❤❤
Me too
@@karenwoo9068 I've always thought Water Of Love was the gem, but I love the whole album along with all their other albums. A top band who weren't with us for long enough IMO.
I propose to my wife while this song was playing in the background, believe me when i tell you.. her answer was "YES!"
I LOVE THIS! I never get bored of Dire Straits. If I don't hear them for a while I 'forget' just how brilliant they were.
Are
They are still present tense in my world!!
Like wise..
I didn't know I liked this song until I heard this on somebody's boombox yesterday. I used to play this album repeatedly and evidently this song was a track in my subconscious.
Ditto absolutely!
Never gets boring ever.
Watch him play with Eric C. and the respect he has for Marks genius.
My personal fave has got to be from debut album.
Wild west end.
Never tire of.
Like this gem!
My favorite cut off one of the best debut albums ever. There was not a weak song on that album, the influence that Bob Dylan had on the young Mark Knopfler is on full display here with Mark's lyrical story telling. Simply superb!
Also JJ Cale in his guitar style
@@jonathanbirch2022JJ CALE, the same picking, something yes of JJ CALE
He made a match with the stile of JJ Cales guitar with a bit of Dylan's singing and nothing wrong on that
I still think their debut album is the best they made. So raw, no frills just music to make the hairs stand.
Such a casual song; yet it is packed full of detail and excitement. I love watching Knopfler's laughter and enjoyment whilst playing this song....he certainly shows his brilliance in this song, and in every nice way, he knows it.
well....see above
Sexy as hell tooooooo
He's not enjoying this on camera. But he is a brilliant song writer and guitarist.
...a painted picture
Mandy Peart, MK is absolutely enjoying singing this song. He is smiling and laughing throughout. It’s an awesome performance and a beautiful song. One of my favorite Dire Straits songs.
it was crazy how good a debut album this was. album period. one of the best albums of all time.
Agreed!!! a masterpiece album for sure
Without a doubt. A timeless classic.
This whole album is genius and one of the all time bests. The blues. Rock. ClassicL cords all meshed to perfection, each time I listen to it It surprises .
The voice - what gift
Dire Straits first album is the only album I have had on three mediums. Album, cassette, and cd. No 8 track, though. Only rival to my most favorite album is Abbey Road.
agreed
Agreed 💯 % !! Unique in many ways
Heard this in the early 80s. This song was the soundtrack to my move to London studying at art school off shaftesbury ave, took the #19 bus often, shopped in China Town.
My altime fav. D.S. song. Fell in love with this song on my first listen. Radio NEVER EVER plays it! Sad.
My dad would play this in his Ford Capri in the 80's RIP Dad. Thanks for the memories.
I would have liked your Dad......
Me too! I had a Ford Capri and I LOVE Dire Straits
Dire Straits at their best!!1978
This is definitely my top 3 favorite dire straits song! And when he sings: “Excuse me talking, I wanna marry you...” IS SICK!!! 🥺
Sick.... And girl in the number 19... All lyric is a movie
That line in the his masterpiece ALWAYS gives me goosebumps!! And Omggggg his style of "plucking" his strings, his tone, his voice, his smiles, his little chuckles...LOVE YOU MK!!!! SEXY AS HELL!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think it's ramble about men; and, like all fiction, it's goes on its way to tell a story at a time [now history]
Mark Knopfler.. simply my number 1.❤
This is such a beautiful, innocent and ‘pure’ Dire Straits track. Love the early work, when Pick & David were present.
JOHN, MARK, DAVID, and PICK..the best 4...❤
The reason I like this video is that it showcases the Knopfler brothers perfectly.
That is Bob Dylan
@@lydiabentley3413Bob Dylan ne faisait pas le job aussi bien, tout le temps. J'aime Bob Dylan depuis 50 ans quand même
Quand j'ai entendu Sultans of Swing dans mon jardin, j'ai pensé, tiens, Dylan à bien progressé en guitare. Mark Knopfler ici, est un joyeux cabotin.
Mark Knopfler checks all the boxes for me. He is easily both my favorite guitarist & vocalist.❤
I heard this song for the first time last night and haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since 😊
Amazing that people are still discovering the genius of MK 😊
Just listen to the whole album, it's amazing!
My all time favorite.
I heard this song for the first time as a 16 year old in 1980 and haven't stopped thinking about it for over 40 years 😊
One of the most underrated and overlooked bands of the 70s. True masterpiece in music
I remember the first time l heard him. l have always been a fan. he is not stagnant ❤
Underrated and overlooked? Hardly. They exploded on the music scene in the late 70's and their music is known far and wide. Mark is regarded as one of the best guitarists of all time. What a talented band they were.
Lump in the throat. US Army. West Germany. Two years and eight months. Not complaining. Made the best of it. This album was one of the reminder of the good times. Thanks.
No wonder Dylan snapped up this wonderful talent in the late 70s and early 80s for a long collaboration. I love Mark
Mark Knopfler is the the most underrated musician in the world.
underrated??? He is a world star!!!😎
Not the most but certainly one of them.
Listened to this 268 times in 48hr
I always liked to watch the expressions on Marks face when he sings and plays. He really enjoys what he doing...and so do I.
I have just read "...I am almost 63..." and it is just the same for me, but it is immaterial as the feeling this song still brings to my heart makes me feel 19 or maybe 22 that I was when I got that LP for extortionate price in the then socialist Poland where anything coming from the "West" was almost beyond the reach. When I bought the LP and listened to it, it made me feel happy for a while, still makes me feel so good when I happen to listen to any of the songs of the first LP and still have the album, one of my favourite. 🙂
I remember when the Straits exploded on the music scene in 1977. They had a sound that I didn't even know I was waiting to hear and they hit such a sweet spot. The right band at the right time. Their music is timeless and it was a dream come true when I finally saw Knophler back in the mid 2000's. One of the best guitar players bar none. Bit of a shame Mark and his brother had such a falling out. Their original lineup was magic.
That first Dire Straits album was so good. When it came out I was living with a group of real head banging heavy metallers, but even they loved this album and played it often.
How have I not heard this song till today. What a masterpiece!
If you listen 399 more times you will begin to realize and appreciate how this masterpiece works on so many levels!
Wish i could hear it for the first time again.
Lucky 🎉
Timeless masterpiece. One of the most direstaitian song of the most direstaitian time of my favourite band.
It’s the way he composes himself in his music videos. So fascinating to watch! Touches your “inner cool”😎 😅
This is such a laid back song, mark knopfler is a god in our house.
what the hell is that he does at around 2:37? that little squiggle of notes. just beautiful.
Genius at work, making it look effortless.
Can't Beat Dire Straits ,plain and simple amazing music 🎶
There is treasure here but no one realizes it.
Impossible to describe this talent
One of my favourite Dire Straits songs. Love the imagery. I feel like I'm walking there every time I listen to it. Thanks Mark.
yes, the imagery, a brilliant short movie --- the wit, the beauty of it !
Right you are Eric, the imagery is a thing of beauty, a wonderful little film !
Makes me wanna visit the city but in a bygone era 😎👌
As a regular visitor to London, when this was released, you can picture the streets, coffee shops etc just from this song, even the pacing of the song mimics the City. Great memories, hugely underrated song, most have never heard of it.
Still my favourite Dire Staits song. Mark Knopfler, what a brilliant guitarist!
mine too!!!
LOVE HIS " PLUCKING"❤️❤️❤️
There is real magi c for me with the original Dire Straits 😮the combination of David and Mark Knopfler's Knopfler's and John Illsley voices is so special thanks for the memories and sharing this video ❤❤❤❤
Our equivalent in Australia would be Cold Chisel Breakfast at Sweethearts or Saturday Night. Both centred around Sydney's King's Cross.
He looks so happy. I love his voice 😎
They should pipe this stuff out of speakers in high school corridors, kids these days don't know what quality serious musicians sound like, class act
might even calm them don a notch.
down
I'm telling you he's one of the rarest of wine ever....
Agree. Saw Mark in the mid 2000's. Dream come true. Awesome show.
One of the greatest songs in the world I want this played at my last day at life
Walking with your wild best friend my father who died do to covid about 2 months ago. Some day we will walk together again Dad. Love You Dad RIP. Love Dire Striats.
I HAVE A SWEDISH FRIEND WHO DID A HIP-HOP COVER TO THIS SONG IN SWEDISH, BUT HE NEVER TOLD ME IT WAS FROM HERE HE GET THAT !!!
Lived in the wild east end
Whitechapel High 1973…..with my wild best friend !….
Those were DAYS!
No Vietnam….
Carefree…..19 years old…..this song sends me back in time whenever I want time travel!
1973? Too bad the song didn't come out until 1978. And Vietnam was still going on until 1975. Guess your memory isn't so good, huh?
Is it just me or do you just melt over this?
And the cheeky smiles of Mark just make you googie 😍
mark trying not to laugh always makes me smile.
If you are listening this song and the girl you want also likes Dire Straits, you just need to say along the quote with Mark's emphasis: "Excuse me talking I wanna, marry you." She will marry you. Yes, she will.
did that work? i dare say him saying it then might have worked on me.
:-)
Ide marry him in a heartbeat💋💔💋💔💋💔💋💔👥👥👥👥👥👥(me&mark)
That's just beyond fantasy for me! A girl who I would love, who would also happen to love Dire Straits, and then I invoke the phrase above, and she would want to marry me??? I am pushing 60, and missed the boat COMPLETELY (the Titanic would have been preferable). Wow, just wow. That would have been awesome!
This is correct.
One of my all time favourite tracks from the greatest electric guitarists in history. Mark Knopfler is also modest and thoroughly likable as a person.
If you are listening to this song, you have a great taste in music I bet. OLDIES ARE GOLD
Would like to see just these 4 back together - so simple - so perfect. No bullshit.
Love seeing David in this video. The passing of time!
One of my all time favourite songs - dripping with easy going good humour. I have a caught a no 19 and used to walk around exactly where they are talking about at a similar time to them (yes I'm old now)! Still never met the conductress on the no 19 - but my hearts been caught by an easy smile there several times.
Timeless.
Who gives a shit if it's not the right guitar. Looks great. Sounds fantastic. Enjoy the music.
I cant stop watching this perfomance
Not live. Taped
MASTERPIECE
I truly love this song. It reminds me of my teens in Boston, just having an amazing time.
This song is so casual and it flows so beautifully.
MK was born to play the guitar. That 1st album of theirs was a classic. I was learning the guitar in 1979 when it
came out & he had his own unique sound. Playing fingerstyle without a pick was a big part of it.
Skateaway....
all the days... I keep coming back to this.,
Same here, friend❤ Dire Straits are timeless
Hard to believe that mark knopler is 75 today 🎉
Just another angel in the crowd....
All lyric is a film
Thank god I discovered this band.
Those sure were simpler times.
I would go back there in a heartbeat.
Close ups can get rough......such great lines here.
knopfler Love you man
me2
When I will be in bed dying,my last wish will be listening to Dire Straits and Mark Knophler. . .
I will die in peace. 🤞
Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. This is a masterclass in perfect song-writing. The composition, melody, lyrics, sentiments, humour. I visited London for the first time when I was 14 and was in awe of the place. Again, at 16 with friends when I did many of the things in this song as if Mark was walking around with me, writing this song. Afterwards, I discovered this song and was stunned by its biography and magnificence. I adore this song.
'Excuse me talking but I wanna marry you'
This has to be the best proposal in history
Amazing song, I love how he chuckles, took me way too long to appreciate this legend
Dated a girl when this broke, we used to slow dance to this album and it was the soundtrack to our relationship and then two years later……poof she was gone!….ohh well I still have the album…..
Now listen to it again, concentrating on the work of the drummer 😀
This golden oldie takes me back in time, soooo smooth, so beautiful.
Ah the late seventies.🎵👍🇦🇺
What a timeless classic. There is this wild unbridled beauty in the music in their first couple of albums.
I hear you mate!
So glad there's another Indian saying this, Our music has become pretty pathetic for the most part.
Cheers!
Just think of all the other stuff that followed, he, they would never have known how great they would be, amazing!!!
Smooth intro…very Dire Straits-ish. Can’t mistake Knopler’s riffs…you ALWAYS know you’re about to fall in love with them/HIM all over again.
Memories
I jusL♡ve this beautiful song the Music is just so laid back with Mark Knopflers awesome Guitar..❤
Got to see Dire Straits Live in New Zealand..🌿💚🌿🎸🌿
Dire Straits were really very FENDER Guys!))))
Jazz Bass + Strat + Tele = Cool
That's a Precision Bass & 2 Strat's but it's still cool you're right.
Than it`s a Strat with a Tele body
+Andrey Gubenko Yeah, it's a Precision bass, but just one Strat and a Tele. Interestingly enough, behind David you can see Mark's rosewood neck Strat, which later got painted red too and became the basis for Mark's signature model. The one he's playing in this clip got sold off, but he still owns and uses the rosewood one.
Wow. You might be a huge DS fan !
Anyway, both maple and rosewood necks are great.
Couldn't agree more!
From the first album, one gem of an actual dire straits song...
Absolute great memories from when this album came on the market. What a brilliant song.
Кроме того что Марк мастер гитары и вокала у него еще и большой артистизм и великолепное чувство юмора😄👍
2:28 look how they're grooving! love it
Niesamowita ta piosenka, a zupełnie o niej zapomniałam. Wspaniałe jak się Mark przy niej bawi. Dobrze, że ją na nowo odkryłam❤
I'm just addicted to this song.......
Great tune, from a killer debut album!
IMO one of the best albums ever made.
An underappreciated & mostly forgotten song from early Dire Straits. About his making the big move to London & all the sights & sounds he came across when he got there. Very evocative.
I’m sill listening to this great song but twice daily. Just love it as they are having so much fun ❤
One of the best songs of all time. Beautifully composed.
Very swaggy song
Mark Knopfler - a legend, never fails to inspire!
I grew up in the west end in Edmonton,so this song has a lot of meaning for me!!!!
I was London born and bred for the first 39 years of my life' I moved 200 miles East to Suffolk. When I hear this song, it takes me right back to some of the wild wild nights I had in the West End (and sometimes the East but NEVER South lol). late 70s, all of the 80s until 92 when I became pregnant and had my daughter in June 93. No more gallivanting in the West End or any End, for the next almost 6 years as I brought up my beautiful daughter alone (with a little help from some dear dearest friends and family but essentially, alone, no partner at all, no ""uncles" dropping in and out).
Oh but now. how I miss it. What a time I had, what a time. No regrets of any weight, just great memories.
Way too much talent on display here. I bet Mark misses those days.
+King Stone His solo albums are great..
@@Jewel_Owldove not in the same way...
@@Baris504 Well, yes, the songs are different but that doesn't mean they are not great. I have 125 MK songs that I love in my playlist.
