My Dad got me into Dire Straits when I was a kid always remember being in his van with him with the Straits on tape..he past away 14 years ago iam 52 and to this day I still listen to this band..really wish they would get back together they still have a lot of fans

This is the best DS formation. Alan Clark added depth to the music, and we still have the wonderful Pick Withers with his accurate drumming... For me, the peak of DS was the early 80s.
My husband has had this song as his ringtone forever. Mark is truly one of those musicians who always stood out. There was always a magic to his sound. It still leaves me stunned and amazed!!

To know that Mark and most of if not all the members of DS over the years played without being junkies is something to be highly respected. Mark especially is a genius that i just can't stop listening to him play.
The feel and light and shade from drummer Pick Withers are wonderful on this performance. His dynamics give the whole band a lift when needed and when he lays back gives them space to breathe.
He really was missed when he went. And the difference is just that, the dynamic command he had, which neither Terry Williams or Chris Whitten ever quite had, although they too were great drummers. Just not quite the same.
@@iainclarke524 Totally agree on all counts. Terry and Chris both fantastic drummers who fitted in very well with the band but Pick had very difficult shoes to fill. Such a beautiful feel he gave to every Dire Straits song, the original in in my opinion the best drummer for the band.
I am no drummer, or musician of any kind, but Pick's playing during the final guitar solo in Telegraph Road is probably my favorite drumming performance of all time. I don't know if there's any legitimate science behind this, though :-) I also like listening to Terry Williams, but I have a feeling he was playing "too much" at times, as if he was trying to compete for the spotlight with Mark.

Man! Pick Withers was a great drummer...that fill he did in the beginning is a little different than the album, and the footwork on the bass drum looks really cool. And the roll and cymbal crashes at the end of the song are so good!
..but he was replaced by omar hakim and rip carlos vega on "brothers in arms" album, coz the big bosses of warner bros. claimed he could'nt get the right sounds..but he was the drummer of ''brothers in arms'' world tour

I must admit the DS are not among my favourite bands, I mean I like very much the way MK plays and how he looks so humble in spite of being a legendary guitarist; but till now I only knew their hits such as 'Walk of Life', 'Money for Nothing' etc. This evening RUclips has let me know this song and it's left me SPEECHLESS. I've always said that Pick Withers was the best drummer DS ever had. The Alchemy performance is wonderful but Pick just has a feel that nobody else can mimic.
Can only subsribe to this. Take Sultan of Swings, without Pick - and John by the way, the song would be nothing. Of course Mark is a killer guitarist, but a good piece of rock means also a good rhythm imho. And Pick was so good (nice touch) on the first album of Dire Straits !!
My favourite era of the band is when Pick was with them, and my favourite concert footage of them is that classic 79 rock palast show. I just LOVE those 1st two albums. He has such an incredible groove !

Amongst great live performers, no one that i've seen is as calm as Mark Knopfler while doing the level of things he does.
