Thank you for finally putting this subject into understandable words! I've been an artist for some 60+ years; a dyer for 40+ years. Though I'd love to work with this ancient dye, I could never afford to purchase any murex dye. But it is very interesting to find out much more about it. After visiting Arsuf/Apolonia (Israel), I wondered how they extracted and produced the ancient purple dye there. Then I found this fascinating video. Thanks.
I dont see a dark or bright purple there is only blues and some off pinks . The color your calling purple at the very top fades back to a pinkish. Nothing like the vibrant purple that people refer to as tyrean purple. Great video
the pieces found are of less value. The high quality purples were found only in kings clothes. That's why it's so hard to find a good quality piece of tyrian purple or israeli blue
