The Caterpillar is really just an Endeavor Lite. We use it as just a cargo ship right now, but with modules, the Cat is going to be the pirate's Endeavor.
I'm glad you showed this SM, when I first saw it, I was blown away by the great imagination and detail of the modules. I actually thought SM should show this on his channel. Gig should definitely give talented people like Astro a job...😎🖖
Happy you ran these clips SM... very cool 😎 Hanging on to my CAT...just in case. Heck with module purchase options the CAT could eventually out price many of the mid to upper tier ships. (Chris needs to hear this and it will be a go) Great work Astro! Someone (SM) run a survey for which modules would be a viable purchase...top 5 or 6 ?
@2:30 Mike, it doesn't need to have an openable module. The medical module could remain closed and the module next to it could serve as an airlock. Also it would only make sense that in the future you could fit your ship as you like. With all the tech available why should ships be limited to certain functions other than for gameplay reasons... but at the same time the actual gameplay doesn't make a lot of sense for bigger ships.
Module Idea: Large s10 gun in the front, maybe have it take up 2 modules for balance. Would be cool if you could also put gun modules in the middle and use them like broadside cannons of yore.
The Caterpillar in general really just gives Starsector Mk.2 vibes. It's an everything hull, ready to accept all sorts of modifications, primary of all GUNS
we got shield module, we got gunship module that would require more energy then baseline cata can produce so 2 modules to add 2 turrets with s4 maaaaybe s5 guns but that sounds a bit to strong. uh emp module, could do a double module for maybe luxury variant or maybe even a triple modular tho doesn't fit theme of the ship to well but you know drake luxury lol. the nose could have a ramp that allows tanks in it but like gets rid on nose turret cause it would need the room. you could also do hangar module where ships can land ontop of the cata but would only be good for smaller ships obviously small multi crew or single seater ships. thats all i can think to add
I'd say only the modules should be expensive, not the ship. As for the concern of side doors exposing people to space - the use case of the side doors is cargo... If you have patients to treat, they'd enter through normal entrances of the ship.
I love the Cat but it's useless to me as a cargo hauler since doing that is not my thing. I keep melting it because news on the modules went dark years ago.
it's not a pirate ship it's a civilian multi purpose ship that IS utilised by pirate because of it's availability and customization. it should be view as both pirate and Police/security, medical or militian/mercenary fonctions. stop categorising Drake as a Pirate ships corporations...
I appreciate Astro’s work. They definitely come up with some cool ideas but I think they always lack any meaningful consideration for CIG’s design philosophy, an understanding of their design aesthetic and general game balancing. A seasoned player can look at maybe 30-40% of the concepts and immediately dismiss them as something CIG would never do. If Astro’s objective is just to learn 3D modeling then great, seems to be working. Keep it up. But if there is any intent to convey ideas to CIG or appeal to the community, I think a lot of time and effort is being wasted. That 30-40% could be focused on things CIG would actually do or be directed to another concept. Sure, maybe Astro isn’t a seasoned player who has been following the game for a decade and doesn’t have extensive knowledge of CIG’s every design decision but I still think more time could be taken to get a better understanding of the material and design concepts before diving in and they’ve been at this long enough that they should be getting better at it. Maybe reaching out to the community beforehand and asking for suggestions would cut down on some of the waste. I think just taking a little bit to do some research and consideration would go a long way. As far as balancing, there’s always too much of everything. Too many chairs, guns, beds, stations, etc etc. Everything needs to be cut in half. Again, ask “How would CIG do this?” and “what’s something similar that CIG has done and how does it impact my idea?” Could CIG have crammed two more beds in the Cutlass Red? Sure but they considered the design philosophy of the game and balancing and went with two. Please keep it up though. Always fun to see what they come up with.

The caterpillar has air shields on the front cargo door for rapid loading and unloading already
I love Astro Chronicles Caterpillar suggestions

Grow E'Tam in the farming module.. that's what i'd grow. Good money and it sells itself.

Bro, huge non gimbaled broadside cannons. Thatd be so cool on the Caterpillar. Thats an awessome idea.

they forgot the drake module with the exaggerated amount of seats
Did no one noticed the " hugs and drugs" label???
Very cool, unfortunately this will never be implemented cause it would make 70% of the ships useless
*slow jam begins*
"Aww baby, yeah, you know it's time for that sweet, sweet love module. Sexual."
I don't think CIG will ever build modules, they want us all to buy 10 ships instead of modules.
Cutlass is obviously what they are headed for, they want you to buy one of each color instead of buying one and setting it up how you want.
every ship should be kind of modular. but smaller ship should have these functions built in and playable first
very cool. some were obs memes, but some you could actually see being implemented to in the future
cig should watch this videos

Too bad CIG is so fucking slow the community has to do it for them.
