Good thing you have that warranty.
MontieMongoose
Now if he only had a dealership around to honor that warranty.
@MasZakrY against the law
I had a Pontiac GTO that, in 12 months of ownership, only resided at my house for 3 months over the course of that year. By the end of that year, I wanted to do physical violence to anyone who said those words to me. Hoping this isn't prophetic for Hoovie - that said, he will get sweet clicks for every trouble rather then the only restraint to me being the thought of "I will not go to jail for this car"
@@stoneshrink you wanted to hurt someone who was glad you had a warranty? The goat is a good car, but this McClaren has a bad track record, so it's a good thing Tyler has that warranty. He even says so himself.
And with the logic of Doug you actually EARN money for every repair that is done under warranty! 🙂👍
the P0420 code can be the result of a bad O2 sensor. The MP4-12C has 4, one before and one after each CAT. If the one after the CAT isn't working right, it will throw this code. If it isn't working at all, it will throw a different code.
As for the engine burning a lot of oil in the past. That can absolutely cause your CAT to fail. It will degrade the CAT quite rapidly, essentially 'aging' it very quickly. So if the problem with the engine is fixed quickly, the CAT will still work well enough to pass the internal emissions tests of the car. But as 2 years pass and the CAT ages naturally with use and especially just sitting around in a garage, it will then just be too degraded and can throw the code. Had exactly this happen on my Audi just now.
First thing I thought of was a bad O2 sensor, but if he has a decent code reader, it should have a separate test for the O2 sensors.
Steffen Scheibler if I remember correctly the code for an upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 that isn’t switching at all (it’s supposed to switch from 100 millivolts to around 700 millivolts at a rapid pace) it would throw a P0137.
Just happened on my Audi too. Stinkin expensive things.
Sensitive onboard emission components = negative consequences to bank account
Try the laquer thinner trick. It has worked for several of my cars that had cat efficiency problems...

I knocked the internals out of a clogged cat and the check engine light went out. My state doesn't have emissions testing. Btw, loving your deep new man voice.
Hoovie, you have an exhaust leak, in 99% of the times, that code is triggered by an exhaust leak that can be very small and you don't hear it. Check the mufflers and the exhaust, pay close attention where they merge.
well not 99%, but it could be. And since it has stainless steel exhaust and its relatively new, leak could apear only at connections, and i doubt that in McLaren they do cheap out on new seals when reinstalling exhaust. So the catalytic converter failure is definetly high possibility here, more so if the engine has been eating oil, which is biggest destroyer of catalyzatic converters. As tyler says in video
A smoke test would show if there are any exhaust leaks. Quick & easy.
Did you watch the vid, or you know it all without even that?
Nowhere near 99% of P0420s are caused by exhaust leaks.
99%? Non tech talking crap! Car needs a few long continuous highway runs. Monitor the downstream O2 sensor for activity. should stay above .67volts with steady throttle.
Resetting the light is always worth a try for something like that. Get it on the open Interstate for an hour or so and then see. Fun video.
Doing burnouts with Hoovies wallet, Geezus, warranty in effect.
@@Broyale26 Those would be skid marks, not burnouts. Hahaha
I noticed several comments below talking about the O2 sensors and all but I tend to agree that the car's ECU is advanced enough that it would differentiate between a faulty sensor and an inefficiency with the system. When my VW B5 threw that code out...it ended up being the PCV tubes were all clogged up with motor oil sludge left behind from normal driving and years of neglect. Turned out it was a common thing for these cars even with different engines. I replaced the PCV tubing and the code never came back. It's been over a year since that was done.
Italian tune ups give British cars heart attacks.
It is so cool that they are becoming closer and closer friends the more and more Hoovie buys sells fixes cars and makes more videos, I even watch Car Wizards channel--- he's such a honest to goodness cool dude, they both are!
P0420 is very commonly misdiagnosed
Actually..the vast majority of the time p0420 is related to an intake vacuum leak.
This can be confirmed by monitoring fuel trim ratios as you drive.
Josh River or a misfire or rich condition
@@arielatom03that is correct. Even the slightest intake leak produces un-metered air into the system. By which the computer will try and compensate by adding more fuel to that bank which then produces a rich fuel mixture with the consequence of misfires.
Rich and lean misfires can both be nearly indectible.
It took me a long time to truly grasp stokiometric ratio. But literally just monitoring short and long term fuel ratios will tell you everything you need to know about any engines running condition.
Any combo of too much or too little fuel and/or air is where all catalysts faults begin. Any of which can produce misfires.
Check the NOx sensor on the exhaust manifold and tail to see if they have gone bad. It's usually those that go bad.
Seat belts ya'll. Use them!
Usually a catalyst efficiency code is indicative of a faulty oxygen sensor. The only time I've had that code pop up for an actual catalyst issue, it was melted halfway closed already lol

The wizard is too badass for seatbelts.
I Will Not be Restrained!
Emissions errors like the one you have, generally require a few drive cycles for the ECU to set the code. This is to prevent temporary load-ups of the cat (like your McLaren mechanic suggested), not running with a warm enough engine, too short drives and all that to trigger a light. It could very well be that the oil two years ago accelerated the wear of the cat in such a way that it now failed well before it's due date.

Hard to understate how important having a mechanic nearby like the Car Wizard is. DeLorean? Bring it on in. $100k McLaren? Yup he'll work on that too.
For cars that put themselves in park when you open the driver’s door the way you put it in neutral with the door open is to put it neutral with the door open.
That is, instead of putting it in neutral and then open the door you open the door then put it in neutral while the door is open. Since the door is already open it won’t put it back into park as you open the door. Every car wash operator knows this as the cars have to be in neutral as they are pushed along the track.
Knew that light would be back. If you’re lucky it’s a coated o2 sensor. But you probably aren’t lucky.
