    I've had my 9960 for about 2-1/2 years. I bought in on Amazon. I'm a quilter and I use it almost daily and I absolutely loved it until a couple of months ago. It is an amazing machine, especially for the price - so many features. A few months ago once in a while it would cut my thread when I pushed the reverse button. It kept doing that more often - now every time I push the reverse button, it cuts the thread, when I push the needle up/down button, it cuts the thread, and of course it cuts the thread when I push that button. I'm going to have to take it somewhere for service because now I can't use the reverse button at all, and the only way I can bring the needle up or down is by using the flywheel. Very frustrating. Singer customer service was no help. It still sews beautifully, by the way.

      Thanks for responding to this review and sharing your experience. Sometimes on sites like Amazon and HSN some reviews get deleted leaving inquirers in the dark. I now know what types of problems can occur. Again, thanks for contributing to this topic.

    Thank you for this review. I bought mine about 3 years ago and haven't played with all the accessories. I'm a newbie learning to piece, and so far the plastic 1/4" foot is lasting better than expected. I too, always had metal feet on my original Singer, my folks bought when I was a freshman in HS..many years ago. I still have her and she still stitches well. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your 9960 as much as I have mine. Thank you for the videos on your channel.

      I may return it if I can get one of my other singers repaired. I had one glitch that's making me nervous. It hasn't duplicated the problem so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    I was sewing on my mother's old '89 Huskvarna Viking, it too was the first with computerized screen. I loved sewing on that machine, but couldn't afford it this time. I was able to finally hand it down to my sister. I bought this new Singer 9960 this April, sewed squares for CQ patches, and am in love. I had a Singer when I turned 13 to 27. I love my machine.

    I talked to a sewing machine repair guy and he told me ppl always complain about tension, then he said "there's no such thing as tension problems...they just don't know how to properly work their machine". I just bought this sewing machine and I plan on getting a full lesson how to use everything, excited to get making stuff!

    • @WiseLady7

      DC CD. I agree. It can be so exciting for sewists when they buy and receive a sewing machine like this one. However, very little time is spent learning how this baby works. I just bought this machine, and I love it! I took my time reading and re-reading the instruction manual FIRST before operating it. I went to Singer's website and RUclips channel as well as "googled" and watched a plethora of instructional videos. Then I proceeded to unbox my Quantum Stylist sewing machine. I believe when ample time is given to learn how to properly work this baby, the easier it will be to understand and operate it, avoid tension problems, and unleash its full potential! I also plan to invest in a sewing course so that I can begin making my own clothes and more! This "girl" can do a lot of stuff! I am very pleased with this sewing machine. It is truly a great investment.

      @@WiseLady7 me too, we are kind of geeky and that's a good thing so you don't blame Singer for operator error. I almost didn't buy this because of so many complaints and service people telling me they are plastic junk and to get an old Kenmore. I have an old K and wanted some new bells and whistles so received yesterday, unboxing today. This video and your comment great help for newbie intimidation, even to open the box!!! LOL Blessings!

      crw wcr I recommend Juki. The exceed 300 or 400 is reasonable. But if you really want the best machine ever, get the Juki exceed 600! You will fall in love.. The 600,400 and 300 are basically the same, just more bells and whistles the higher the #. 300 is a excellent machine if u cant get the 400 or 600.. I Love u can cut the threads by pressing the heel on ur foot peddle on the 600!

    Thanks for your review of this machine. From what I can tell, everyone is very happy with this machine, and that makes me want to buy it. It’s not so cheap here in New Zealand, where there isn’t so much competition or demand for sewing machines, but still, it’s piqued my interest. I don’t exactly need it, but you know what it’s like when you start collecting 😀

    To Teaquilts, When you "review" a product you should at least look at the instructions first. In the front of the book it tells you what each foot or accessory is. Additionally, you bought a new Singer and just assumed that it worked as all previous models. I have the Quantum 9960 and it's an excellent machine! The features are outstanding as well as the price. I hope by now you can give a new review and go over the outstanding accessories included.

    • @teaquilts
      @teaquilts  7 лет назад +3

      Hi Dianne Patterson. Thanks for watching the video. I appreciate your suggestions. I only plan to use the machine to do straight stitching with a 1/4" foot and the open toe foot. I hope I stated that in the video. I wasn't necessarily doing a review of the feet, but just letting people know by seeing what was included. I don't plan to use any of those feet in my quiltmaking.
      I have had some problems with my machine. It will not stitch forward, actually reversing sometimes. I found it does that when the sewing is thick at the start, like with sewing two half square triangles together. I do have an excellent repair center that I can take it to if it continues.

      @@teaquilts I think you did an excellent job on your un-boxing of the Singer 9600. You do it the way you want, if someone doesn't like it, they need to make their own video. Besides you did say several times in your video, that you have been using Singer sewing machines for some time and that much of the things are the same, but a few features changed. I'm waiting on my Quantum 9985 to arrive. It should be here by this Friday or Monday at the latest. Happy Sewing!!!

    Hi, My wife just purchased this sewing machine and she crochets also. She has a bunch of squares that are about 10×10 inches and made from wool/yarn and she plans on crocheting together. I suggested that maybe she could use the sewing machine for that purpose with one of the stitches? It would save her days but most my ideas are not good ones.lol

      I had a couple of occasions where the machine just started sewing in reverse about 2 months after purchase. I put the machine up for about six months and it repeated that fault. It happens about after a week of continuous use. However, I neglected for over a year and sewed with no problems for 2-3 months while my main machine was in the shop. I'm overall disappointed in the Singer brand. This used to be the only brand I purchased for many years.

It had lots and lots of problems so they revamped it and changed the look with the water-wave pattern on the front of the machine. Roxanne Stitches on You Tube has over twenty sessions all about 9960. Good Luck.

It is under warranty, but by the time I send to the "certified repair center" on my own dime and pay return shipping, it's just not worth it. I plan to take to a local repair center to see if they can help. When this happened, I noticed that a lot of other reviews said the same thing happened to them.

    What machine would you recommend to a quilter?

    • @teaquilts
      @teaquilts  6 лет назад +2

      I don't know that I'd recommend any particular machine. You'll have to do your homework. Here are some things to consider:
      Singer is now owned by Huskvarna/Viking - they don't want to push that side of the business so it will always be behind the industry as far as features. I do, however, love my Singer Heavy Duty machine. I did a video on that. I only use it for belts/straps, sewing rag quilts, etc. as it doesn't have a lot of the features of my other machines.
      Since I overworked my two main Singers - CXL and XL1000, I've been mostly sewing on Babylock Elagante which is no longer being sold as new; maybe you can find a used one on the market. I mostly machine embroider with my Babylock Ellisimo. I have no complaints from either of these machines. Have been working great from day one without major issues. I would recommend a Babylock.
      Other brands that are exceptional are Bernina. However, you will pay a lot more for these machines. I don't own one (yet). I hear Pfaffs are great too.
      The main thing to consider when purchasing is what are you looking for in a machine? Automatic thread cutter, needle up/down, easy threading system, needle threader, push button thread cutter, speed control, sewing without foot controller, comes with quilting feet included or how much for these (walking foot, open toe foot, 1/4" foot, free motion foot, etc.)
      Then, go to the store to test drive the machines. Do not make a purchase that day, think about it and go back again to test drive again. How was the machine? How was the customer service. Most store dealers will have free classes. Others also have free mini classes to show how to use certain features.

      Hi Bree K,
      I found that the same company that makes Huskvarna/Viking and Phaff sewing machines now own Singer. When I go to dealers in my local area, they don't even have singer machines present, especially the Viking dealers. I wonder if it's intentional, them making the Singer line of machine into total junk to push the more expensive lines. Just a thought...

    • @michellerhodes4836
      @michellerhodes4836 6 лет назад

      Look and see if your machine came with a foot that just has a single hole for the needle to go through rather than a big opening. This might help your fabric from getting stuck. Just don't do any other stitching other than forward and reverse. Also, are you using a ball point needle? Ball points are made for knit fabrics.

      No, I wouldn't recommend this machine. It's not dependable, like the older models Singer machines since the company has been sold. I can recommend a Babylock machine and/or a Bernina (my friends has that brand).

    • @teaquilts
      @teaquilts  6 лет назад +2

      This machine is not consistently sewing correctly. When it's performing at maximum level, it's a fine machine. I purchased because I have two other Singer Quatum machine I purchased years ago; I wanted to replace one.
      However, on several occasions, I've had this machine start stitching in reverse, yes in reverse! Of course this happened after I had it for 30+ days. The first few times, I was able to cut the machine off and it would reset immediately. The more it happened, the off/on process did not work. If I quit for the day, it "may" work the next sewing session. I can't have a machine dictating when I can and mostly cannot sew.
      I haven't taken it to a shop because I'd have to send to an authorize repair shop, not the local "Singer" dealer. I'd have to pay for shipping to and from. Just too much money. It would be cheaper to have my shop fix for me since I have a relationship with them.

    Unfortunately after less than one month our Singer Quantum Stylist 9960
    is being returned. It is a very likable machine but it does have
    problems. My wife did not like the Needle Down Only function when
    stopping sewing but could live with that. And the warped plastic parts on the
    bed storage compartment unit was also livable. But after just a few hours use the machine is jamming up when restarting after using the built in scissors. That requires removing the throat plate and freeing up the hook. Plus it does not always sew the correct stitch length. Signs the machine will need a lot of servicing and repairs in the future. My local sewing machine repair shop told me that the 9960 requires frequent expensive repairs. So it is going back Wednesday. Our Pre Black Friday Deal Janome machine is working superbly. No built in scissors or stitch modification features and 100 different stitches and my wife loves it. And it is quieter than the Singer 9960 and stitch quality is better. It even has a large extension bed too.
    We were really trying to love new Singer machines but the 9960 is the third Singer we are returning. We will stick with Brother and Janome.

    • @teaquilts
      @teaquilts  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Randy for coming back with your review. I too want to love Singer, but as I mention before, not until the ownership changes AGAIN. I just received by Brother from the shop for routine cleaning and the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 is going back into storage.
      I have to say that it finally sewed correctly the entire two months that I used it after giving me the initial scare of sewing "sdrawkcab" on multiple occasions.

    PLEASE NOTE: I'm not recommending you purchase this machine. After a month of using, the machine started stitching backwards! Sometimes when I would turn it off and then back on, it would work right away. Othertimes, it would take the next day. All I purchased this machine for was to piece quilt blocks and am having difficulty with that task.
