  • An audio excerpt of a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples on the wonderful back eight at Kingston upon Thames on Sunday, 9th June 2024.
All Saints Church in Kingston has a fabulous ring of twelve bells with the tenor weighing 18cwt. These bells replaced an anticlockwise ring of ten with a 27cwt tenor. In 1972, the bells were augmented to twelve, with the treble, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th recast by Whitechapel. Bells 4, 5, and 7 were cast in 1936 by Mears and Stainbank. The 8th and 9th were cast in 1826 by Thomas II Mears, and the tenor, originally the old 9th of the ten, was cast in 1879 by Mears and Stainbank. Together, they form a bright and delightful peal of twelve.
The bells are crystal clear in the ringing chamber and perform extremely well. They sound lovely and mellow outside, blending perfectly with their surroundings. The tenor bell features a wooden shafted clapper made by Phillip Pratt (Avon Ropes), which enhances its resonance, giving it a rather gutsy sound. These bells evoke memories of Shoreditch, Ripon, and Portsmouth Cathedral for various reasons. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend ringing these bells!
