The Shogun is nearly identical to the Flame. The Ninja Flame is HDMI only, while the Shogun supports RAW video streams via SDI as well as HDMI connections.
The Atomos Ninja Flame is a 7", 1920 x 1200 on-camera recording monitor that combines 4K recording with a 10-bit FRC panel that supports native display of HDR (log) footage as well as high brightness viewing of Rec. 709 footage. It utilizes an HDMI input to support clean output signals at resolutions up to UHD 4K, recording it to 2.5" SSDs using 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR codecs.

Absolutely great video & thank you so much for helping me I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to use this thing
The best review about this monitor I have seen so far. I'm definitely buying one after seeing all those features and the screen quality. Thanks bro!
Fantastic, straight to the point and well produced. I have been struggling to find reviews of this. I am surprised you don't have more views
hey +Nick Bruckman good review..!!!
I am struggling to find which one works better and has good features atomos ninja assasin or ninja flame??
please respond
Thanks
BOOZYTV the flame has a MUCH better screen. it's newer and has hdr
legendp2011 thank you
Yes , quick and " To the point"...and more importantly....."English"...
87,780 views looks good to us!
God bless you for skipping the fluff! Extra bonus points for not calling the monitor "this guy".
I love bonus points!
But Johanness-- This review was so good,,,guess who just bought one of these lightly used at a great price,,,,(pointing at self)...This guy
@@clintjohnson5914 good for you! Congratulations from this guy.
Great work on this Nick. Would love to keep seeing reviews from you!
DSLR Video Shooter Hi there. Thanks so much for the kind words!
Awesome review- straight to the info and no fluff! Thanks for taking the time to post!
Totally love this review. No damn fluff...and very thorough. I think you just sold me on this and it wasn't even on my radar, because I don't really need the recorder feature. But it has so many other useful features!!
Finally a decent run through lol I'm about to buy one of these and I've been looking for someone to just go through all the features like this. Thanks again
Great review. Like the no-frills approach. Just straight to the point.
Thank you for a very thorough and fluff free review!
Excellent. Thanks for the "no fluff" treatment!
Nick - This was so helpful. I just got the NF and your video was perfect.
Nice and clean. Just picked one up. This was helpful. Thanks!
Really really good review
Great review! Thank you & keep it up!
Great job man! Appreciate you making this for us! :)
Thanks for the support, glad it helped!
Thanks a lot for the great review!
Thanks for the review. Very helpful!
Excellent review thanks
This was very helpful, much appreciated
Thanks very nicely done. planning to get this soon.
Nick Bruckman i got mine excited and some issue as well. internal and external 4k slog 2 show different results. external kinda looks 1 stop over. u see this too on a7rii?
You should Plasti Dip the case black! They even have a matte finish. It works great because if you change your mind it literally peels off in one sheet (as long as you made it thick during application) . Anyways great video, I'm getting one and I'm plasti dipping that case!
Good overview!
Great review! Thank you.
Alex López No problem!
It was an extremely well done explanation of the Ninja Flame which helped me since I just got one. But it wasn’t a review I guess, in terms of hearing your opinion on what works well and what doesn’t, what you liked and disliked about the flame.
More a review of the features I suppose :)
Very helpful none the less!
Well done sir. I have one and still learning how to use it with my JVC-gy-ls300.
yes in deed.
Nice review ! ☺️
Great review!
Great Job My Man!!
Good info, nice gear with many features.
Very very kool this helped me decide which monitor I need
Glad it helped!
Great review
Great Review man! Thanks! Just one question. What is the difference between the SHOGUN flame and NINJA flame, other than the price?
great review!
I spray paint everything!!! Red knobs, blue knobs. Unless it is Benro blue or something that looks like it belongs on my tripod, it gets painted. 1 question, can you lose the time code on the screen if you wanted to?
Yes you can, just tap anywhere on the screen a couple times to choose the level of settings that are displayed.
Great review Nick...thinking about getting one for my Sony A7iii
You won't be disappointed!
Great review! I’ve heard a few things about using this with an A7s II that are concerning. First being that it adds contrast to the SLog profiles, and second that if you don’t fire record from the camera that it will reduce the quality. Have you experienced either of these? Overall is it worth the money for the improvement in image quality? Thanks!
So it does add the slightest bit of contrast and saturation, I'm talking like almost not even noticeable, so I wouldn't worry. I'm not sure if it's the monitor, but I've heard of this happening with HDMI devices in general. I don't see why it would matter where you hit record, tho you can trigger the recorder from the camera so that's what I'd do. I've since upgraded to a better A-cam, so I don't use this combo too often, but as a monitor itself I'm extremely happy with it. Great features, super bright, you can't go wrong. Only wish I had the SDI version now :p
nice review
So i can downscale the footage to 1080p before going into post? Thereby saving me some file sizes?
Nice review, but I do know how to operate a Pelican hard case
Great video Nick! One question... does it record the 4K DCI output from a GH4?
Jerry Roe thanks! I'm not too sure there. Just have a look at the supported video resolutions.
Great video. Thank you.
Can you hear the fan? Is it noisy?
GREAT VIDEO!
so it runs for about 3 hours on both batteries combined?
Good video, but I have a question ;-) In the monitor menu, there is a sliding bar between SD to HD. Going to HD makes the monitor darker for a few stops, how does this result during recording?
If you mean the brightness slider, it doesn't affect your footage.
@@BufBeats Oh I see, since I use the recorder for telecine purposes, I increased 'light' of the projector and all footage was overimposed. But this brings me to luma waveform, if I keep my waveform lower dan 100 IRE, it should be ok???
Great Job!
My monitor isn't working and no site or video has touched on this issue. Midshoot, it stopped working and not whenever I plug my HDMI into the monitor it says No Input and No Media. Sometimes it doesn't even turn on. What do you think the issue is?
02:50 You mixed things up there. It's not a 4K Monitor, it's 1920x1200 - therefore slightly higher resolution than FullHD. It's a 4K recorder.
Thanks for pointing out the error, i didn't mean native screen res but definitely omitted that piece of info. Title of the video has been slightly changed to reflect as well. Thanks.
You're welcome. Great review in general. I'd like to hear your opinion on using the Ninja Flames monitor instead of a EVF. Is it possible to judge Exposure and Focus?
Frankly I never use the EVF. IDK what I'd do without this monitor! Makes the exposure tools on the camera look like toys! The waveform monitor and peaking tools are my go-to. RGB waveform is also good for dialing in WB. Monitoring has improved 10 fold!
Can this be use for run and gun documenrary? And what codec for adobe users?
Is the fan noise audible with the Shotgun mic in this setup?
Great review. Do you or anyone else know how this recorder works with the Canon C100 mkii in regards to slow motion capture? My guess is that this recorder can handle the 60i output from the HDMI out port on the camera, but can it convert to 60p and give me the same slow-mo I get with the internal camera recording? Thanks again.
Is there a way to not have the file be too big? Mine is recording +100GB an hour. I can't really use it for anything. Advise this rookie, pleeeeease...
Use the prores LT codec for the smallest file size possible.
Which cage is on your camera? Great video, thanks.
TC Thanks, it’s this one here. The only thing I didn’t like was how the handle tightens to the cage. I feel like it loosens in time.
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1176891-REG
Nice review. Do you know if you can record desqueezed anamorphic directly to the SSD? I know the desqueezing viewing option is available, but wondering about recording with the desqueeze baked in. Thanks.
I don't know sorry to say. I've never used that feature.
Thanks for the video. Just bought the atoms ninja flame. Ive been playing with the settings for a few days trying to figure out how to do Time-lapse and can't seem to work it out.
What are the correct settings on a GH4 to be able to get a Time-lapse to work? Ive asked atoms but can't get a straight answer from them.
Thanks Nick. Seems like it doesn't really matter what the camera settings are - its all recording on the flame side like you said. I think I got it worked out now - appreciate it!
Great review! Lets see if i understood right: You dont need to had a 4k camera to record 4k video using it. Correct? Thx!
dobermansnp Thank you! That's not correct tho. Your camera needs to support 4K in order for the monitor to receive it.
Thanks buddy! Keep it up the great job!
dobermansnp Will do, thank you!
Really good review, man. There's a sale going on at a few stores here in Aus and I've been looking at picking this up. Your video is really pushing me towards making that jump! Would LOVE to be able to shoot 10-bit V-Log L on my GH4.
Have you experienced many negatives with the Ninja Flame?
Nick Bruckman That's awesome to hear! Do you find the 7" too large for your setup? And how does Atom HDR affect your final footage if at all? That's the one thing I'm trying to wrap my head around.
Got it, so it's just for monitoring purposes.
Interesting that some find it too large for them; I would think having that slightly larger screen would be well suited for monitoring purposes, but can understand those who may find it bulks up their rig too much.
Seems like there's a lot of positives to this kit, especially for the price!
Picked this up today and your review was a big factor in me making that choice!
But of course, I find out that it doesn't come with an HDMI cable to connect to the camera. How do you rate the Atomos cables? The straight angle isn't exactly cheap and the right angles don't look like they'll work well with cage cable locks and the articulating screen on the GH4. Companies mark up their cables like crazy and this appear no different, but naturally I want to avoid any connection issues if I go towards cheaper, third party options. I've not generally had issues going to those options before, but any words of advice there?
And seriously, thanks for answering my questions!
Can this shoot 4K DCI (Cinema 4k) at 24FPS with GH4?
Hey great video.
I was wondering if this has touch to focus ability and if it supports eye auto focus on the Sony a7iii
Kat Contreras thank you. No touch focus tho. Just shows you what the cam sees.
does it have pause?
Hey the atomos is a poxy recorder correct? So if you bake a lut into the footage you still have unaffected footage on the camera?
I wouldn't exactly say proxy, but yes, you can bake looks right into the footage and still have your cam footage same as it was.
awesome I learned a lot also I hate videos with fluff so I love your videos LOL
Kenneth Hunter thanks Kenneth! Appreciate the kind words.
can i shoot 422 50f/s 1280p?
Do you know if all new Ninja Flames come with the hard case. BH Photo shows a soft travel case in their package
I'm not sure if they aren't mentioning the hard case. I'd hate to buy a hard case if one comes with it standard. Thanks.
Sorry, I couldn't tell ya...
Bruckman Media LLC Thanks
Thanks very helpful. How do upload Luts ?
Jet Phynx just drag and drop the .cube file over like you would if you were putting it on an external drive.
How's the file size with the monitor compared to without?
It's a pretty big difference. Figure about 4x larger compared to camera files, depending on codec you choose.
Thanks a lot for this simplified and informative review! Please how did you connect the RODE Mic - to the camera or the Ninja Flame itself? I have Atomos Ninja Inferno and a 5DM3 but can't hear any sound on playing back the video when I connect my RODE Mic to the 5D? Thanks in advance for your reply.
you got it! I usually connect my rode to my camera since I use the ninja to monitor primarily, not record. So the sound will exist in cam.
Ok! Thanks for the reply.
Does it record 120fps from the Sony A7S II?
No. Tried it. Only 60p over HDMI. Higher frame rates require BNC connection
The a7sii can record 120 internally, but can't push it out through HDMI. It shows up as 60p on the Shogan...
Oh well :(
how much is it
So confused.. can't tell difference between, flame, ninja, and assassin. Want to use with Panasonic dvx200 any help?
It seems the assasin is now discontinued, so the flame it is.. thank you.
great!!!
On the time lapse , do you know if I can record over a 3 month period, ( Cherry season tree blossom)..say 1 frame a day for 3 months until full cherry.?
Art Last yeah, if you have power. 90 frames doesn’t take up much space. Wouldn’t want to leave it outside tho.
Does your Atomos Shogun Inferno have fan noise when in use?
Not that I've noticed
Thanks, i think there is an issue with mine.
I'm searching for video of native in camera sony a7s a7s2 vs the recorded footage in atmos with download links to the actual untounched footage. so if you can do it it would be amazing, thank you :)
Can you help me out here. I own a Sony a6300 looking to purchase an átomos recorder pls help.
Whats your question?
@@nickbruckman4616 hello Nick. I like to purchase an átomos I don't know the difference between the differene models. I pre order the new pocket black magic so I need the best átomos that Will fit and give me the best results on both my a6300 and black magic.
RT365 look them up at B&H. You’ll be able to compare model features there.
Are you still using this monitor today? The only issue I have with 7" monitor/recorders is that they are gigantic on top of the a7sii. I use a 5" monitor for most of what I do.
Yep I am. I had the same school of thought before I bought it and now I doubt I would want to use anything smaller. I tried the 5" Ninja Blade and wasn't nearly bright enough so I had to ditch it. I can still comfortably use the Flame with my cage when I'm on my monopod or tripod. It's pretty light. The only time I don't use it is for glidecam shots.
Good to hear. Thanks. Follow up question. Do you notice a difference between the 4K internal 4:2:0 versus the 4K 4:2:2 from the Flame?
No problem. And yeah definitely, but it's not always practical to use. The biggest difference is in how much room you have to more cleanly make adjustments, like white balance, etc. The codecs are a lot stronger, there's way more data. File size jumps up dramatically, so I only use it for certain projects where I'll need higher end footage for grading. So most of the time I monitor w/ the Flame.
Aside from using it for monitoring to record video, can it be also used for stills? I have a very bad vision and looking at viewfinder / LCD is hard for me. I need a bigger screen such as this one for my composition and focus.
Yes you can. It'll act the same way as your viewfinder. Seems overkill though. You can probably get away with something much cheaper for that purpose.
Thank you for replying! Yes, I did order the sony monitor CLMFHD5 Clip-On LCD. Ninja flame I thought is huge and is not fit for what I intend to use it for.
So can i use the Canon EOS 5 _(that doesnt support 4k video)_ to shoot 4k HDR videos?
No, the monitor only records the feed it is given. So the camera must either record 4k internally, or be able to output that resolution.
***** what a waste of $2000
Mike Messiah sounds more like a waste of a camera if you're after those specs.
lmfaooooooooo
Can i use it connected to a PC/Mac as a second monitor?
I could use it as a hdr grading reference monitor and/or as e.g. scope monitor
Very good review, thanks. Here is my question: I do some family videos in FCP 10.3. I have shared these in 4K to apple devices, only to have a serious issue with delay where the video is beffereing on my living room sony tv, set up via apple tv. Can this device output in 4K without a delay to my home onkyo reviewer for viewing n my 75" sony tv? I tried to make blu ray discs via a pioneer peice of crap blu ray recorder, but they wont play.
Paindoctor I don't think you would want to use this for that purpose. It does have an HDMI out, but it only monitors the incoming signal from your camera. I'm guessing the 4K signal is clogging up your bandwidth somewhere. Unless you have a 4K tv why not just export your videos in 720p? 1080p looks good too but not even necessary for tv viewing depending on your preference.
Thanks for your reply. It is a 4K tv that is 75", and I really wanted to see it in 4k, which is why I just got the sony A7Rii camera. Really frustrating to have this stuff and not be able to use it fully. Any other suggestions would be welcomed.
Paindoctor Another option is upload your 4K videos to RUclips and access them from your tv/RUclips app. That'd be the simplest off the top of my head.
I tried that too. But the video I made wouldn't' load to RUclips, probably I am guessing because I used music in it that has copyright infringement issues. It was only intended for private use though.
Paindoctor that'll happen. You should still be able to see your video play though. Worst case they mute the soundtrack altogether.
Hi. Ive searched everywhere but i cant get the answer. Do this products support input 4k and record 1080p prores. This means 4k footage downscaled to 1080p. Im using samsung nx1 and planing to buy two of this unit. My concern for 1080p downscaled is because of easy delivery for my editor, sharp and more detail footage from 4k downscaled.
fakhrul amin it accepts whatever the camera sends it, so you’d have to shoot in 1080 or transcode your footage.
Bruckman Media LLC i see. So the unit does not accept 4k input and record in 1080p. Thanks for your reply!
what size is your articulating arm?
GLASSFILM that one is 7".
Last question! What's the brand?
I know this is old, haha. But will this work with Canon T7i?
Alex Rudd Music if it has an hdmi out then I’d assume so
Great review Nick! Quick question, is it absolutely necessary for me to insert my SSD into the master caddy for the media card to properly perform. I have this 256 SSD(www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1281583-REG/g_technology_0g05219_atomos_master_caddy_4k.html?ap=y&gclid=CjwKCAjwjZjZBRAZEiwAPeLSKzBS45cPanlVhi5ZhSWk0VE_jLIF6RgDrnz0h5Mkqd-pFgZa2WJTBhoC9qwQAvD_BwE&smp=y) but I don't think its necessary for me to insert it into the caddy because for 1 it doesn't fit?
Diqaun Coleman Thank you! That looks like it would fit fine. Id call B&H and they should tell you for sure. Looks like the ssd is built in already.
file can`t sent to ftp or for live stream with that device.. not cool 👶
Bro your iMac is very high and shouldn't be good for comfortable working.
Aziz Videographer yeah it's definitely not ideal. Eye level would be best. Working with it for now.
