Candlewood Lake was not just a big field, as one poster described it.
The Rocky River Valley had farms, two cemeteries, etc. Some of those farming families had owned their land since before the American Revolution. The villages of Jerusalem and Leach Hollow, among possible others, were there. After buying out numerous land owners, work crews demolished over a hundred buildings and cut down thousands of trees before burning all the debris. Numerous covered dirt roads, bridges, farming implements, bicycles, a schoolhouse and foundations of those farmhouses and summer cottages remain. The State General Assembly authorized Connecticut Light & Power to develop the hydroelectric potential of the Housatonic River. To this end, the valley was flooded over a period of 7 months.
I found this bit of Connecticut history in the book "Connecticut Icons", by Connecticut Magazine editor Charles Monagan. I'd like to find pictures of what was here before.

I'd love to send you some of my research. It includes some photos of Leach Hollow, a map of New Fairfield, a topo map, and an annotated map of where some old roads are in leach hollow.

    Is the water ever clear?

Early spring before the algae really starts up the vis is a little better. 5 to 10 feet maybe. 20'depth seems to be the best for visibility and light. Below 30' vis seems to quickly go down to a foot and darkness. I think the the algae starts to settle to the bottom as the summer progresses. Not the Bahamas...

Anthony Ricci no cause there is no chlorine in the water so it’s like asking if the ocean is clear
