Candlewood Lake Leach Hollow Cemetery Dive
Просмотров 11 тыс.6 лет назад
Candlewood Lake Leach Hollow Cemetery Dive. Candlewood Valley was flooded in 1929 for power generation. Grave diggers where paid a dollar per grave to relocate the remains. The Leach Hollow cemetery was relocated near the center of Sherman by the town library. What remains is the wall and stairs to the cemetery. Next time I plan to do a more thorough search to see if anyone requested to remain ...

Candlewood Lake, Chicken Rock dive
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.8 лет назад
Candlewood Lake Dive, Sept 27, 2015. First 10 minutes are at and around the base of Chicken Rock. Nothing more than a murky beer can graveyard. Average depth was around 22 feet. Second dive was just North in what use to be known as Leach Hollow. There were several homes in this area on what was Leach Hollow rd. We dove and found a house Foundation on the East side of the Lake in 15' of water. E...

Very cool
Sick video, so I take it that you scuba dive and you're a pilot?
Were you active or guard? My unlce flew AH-1s out of Albany before they switched to UH60s
I was part of 10th Mountain, ft drum. We were based at Griffiss AFB-Rome, NY at the time.
WHOA!!!! 💀 WHOA!!!! 🙈 WHOA!!!! 👀
Great video, thanks! We have often wondered about the characteristics of Green Pond.
Are any of those maps available please? Thanks

According to Navionics, theres a bridge about 100' west of Blueberry Island. Ive tried to find it but no avail!
The only intact bridge I know of is the Orchard point Bridge.. it’s somewhat marked, I found it by dragging my anchor then dove it. Interesting map of Candlewood: archives.library.wcsu.edu/omeka/files/original/Truman_A._Warner_Papers_MS026/4653/ms026_mapdrawer8_candlewood_1926_whole.jpg Local town halls have the original CL&P survey maps which narrows down the search.
@@pittwr Thats awesome! I grew up on the lake and ever since I was a kid I always wanted to know whats below the surface. Im thinking about buying rover and sending it down. Keep up the great work!
Don't be surprised u might find 2cd temple down there in Jerusalem..
Need a group of logisticians to work on the sunken Jerusalem data..
🤔?

Exactly. I literally haven’t been able to find a single thing out about Jerusalem. I wonder if it was a black community…😢

Where’s the fish?
If you take leach out is it deceiving
🤔Leach Hollow is the name of the cemetery..
Wow! That was awesome! I knew that there was a small town down there, but to actually see parts of it, was amazing! My grandfather was a Portuguese mason, and when he came to America, one of his first jobs was working at Candlewood to make the lake. There’s a bunch of old cemetery base stones in the old property that were supposedly from there. Makes you think 🤔
Interesting. Found a grave stone built into an old fireplace here in Sherman by the town park. Nothing left but the foundation and chimney, could see the full inscription, still there. I found the cemetery by chicken rock. I know the stones were moved next to the Sherman library. Not sure about the bodies though, seems unlikely to me. I have looked for the Wanzer and New Fairfield cemeteries but the vis below 30 feet was near zero and pitch black even with a powerful dive light.
Why is the water of Candlewood Lake so dark and murky?
The algae is feed by lawn fertilizer and other man made nutrients that finds its way into the water. Below the thermocline, 24’, the vis can be down to a foot because the dead algae that sinks is slow to decay do to the lack of oxygen in the thermocline. In the Fall the water at the bottom will rise as the surface water cools and sinks. Water will appear brown for a bit. I’ve done some research on this, Interesting stuff
@@pittwr Thanks for the very thorough explanation. I appreciate it.
This is a great adventure. Thanks for making and sharing this great footage!
What a wonderful video. So glad you documented this.

Where can I buy these maps?
I can email the dive map and some survey maps that I made up if that’s what you would like? I went to the Sherman and New Milford town halls to get copies of the original CL&P maps.
You may like this map. archives.library.wcsu.edu/omeka/files/original/Truman_A._Warner_Papers_MS026/4653/ms026_mapdrawer8_candlewood_1926_whole.jpg
Did anyone forget to mention this was a black own town taken by eminent domain and the people who refuse to sale flooded them out and now as usual in America a playscape for white peoples
That’s completely false. The Farris family who lived in that area indeed refused to sell and still own the land under Candlewood, they were white. Hence Farris Estates. Please take your politics elsewhere.
cool videos im curious where you get the maps from?
The local town halls have copies available of the original CL&P survey maps. I use them along with an updated depth map to navigate. archives.library.wcsu.edu/omeka/files/original/Truman_A._Warner_Papers_MS026/4653/ms026_mapdrawer8_candlewood_1926_whole.jpg Link to a larger CL&P map from the 1920s. Part of an interesting Candlewood history piece from WCSU.
Why is this town under water? Was it in a flood area and was abandoned? Thanks

You could probably find enough beer cans down there to put a kid through college lmao
also can you look for a 20 hp merc, its just north of school, lost about 35 years ago...lol
How did you loose an outboard motor, prey tell?

cool to see a map, especially of the school house,,,the water is low right now...and you can see the stone wall exposed near the school
i read the book(mostly pictures) on the building,...not sure how old the graves were...but i work in a cemetery...and after far less than a 100 years...doesnt seem to be much left....probably depends on soil,etc....wonder how much they really moved and who was watching
That’s interesting. I was wondering the same thing. Read an interesting article on potters field, NYC. mentioned after 50 years they could reuse a plot... For a buck a grave there’s not much incentive. $15 bucks in today’s dollars.
Maybe the buck a grave thing was to make us think people were always just desperate for money
I could never that is absolutely terrifying
Very nice too!
Great clip 👌
Have you dove lake zoar I have a few of us looking to dive it
Hi Dan, Not Zoar but I’ve been wanting to dive the area around the Lillinonah boat launch off 133. Thinking after 75 years there could be some interesting finds... The village of Southville was located just south of the ramp as well. Wondering if the water clarity is any better with the zebra muscles... anything interesting in Zoar to find?
We will be in the area Thursday by the hamburger stand if your interested around 1030 I have 2 other people going is there anyway to send you a private message I’ll give you my cell

Keep it up man!
Not one fish seen. I was surprised not to see a few bass. Thanks for posting these. Anymore on Candlewood coming soon?
We were surprised too, saw maybe two or three small mouth bass. We should have dove from the Southern side. Not much to see on the North end. My last Candlewood dive the gopro quit. I have some tape of my search for the Wanzer cemetery I could post. Massive Bass in that one. I’d like to look for the Never Sink Bridge in the spring. I need to visit the Danbury town hall and get copies of the CL&P maps to narrow the search. It may still be standing, it’s steel construction similar to the Orchard Point Bridge.
dude in summer theres so much fish
I enjoyed this and appreciate the subtitles....very interesting and thrilling... love seeing the fish as well
Fascinating!!! I grew up on Candlewood Isle back in the 70s but early 80s my dad gave me the keys to the boat. Spend so much time on the lake and always knew the history of the lake. But I will admit swimming, skiing, tuning I always wondered where the infamous graveyard was. Thank you for sharing this video. Kinda startled me when you were next to that tree....great work!!
Me too. Back then my address was 83 lakeshore drive. We were right on the water. Brookfield. 1965 to 1972. I'll never know why my mom and dad sold that house.
What’s up bitch

I wish I had more positive things to say but what is the point of this dive ? It's so murky you can't see anything?
🤔
Sorry Anne this is Candlewood (man made lake) not the Caribbean.....so rude
Girlfriend and I have dove this lake twice.

What are your best finds in the lake? Live nearby and have a boat and might start diving.
Sadly there’s a lot of garbage. Doing some research and finding the old homesteads, cemeteries, and bridges make it more adventurous. I’ve seen some bass almost two feet in length stalk me. Hoping to get some dives in soon while the vis is still good. The visibility below the thermalcline deteriorates to a few feet as the season progresses. Find mostly beer cans, sunglasses, anchors, and fishing lures.
I agree I did not like seeing all of that garbage down there....
Im thinking about getting my scuba licence so I can go scuba diving at Candlewood lake.
HiNu7 I’m saying....
Lol not a bad idea
Candlewood Lake was not just a big field, as one poster described it. The Rocky River Valley had farms, two cemeteries, etc. Some of those farming families had owned their land since before the American Revolution. The villages of Jerusalem and Leach Hollow, among possible others, were there. After buying out numerous land owners, work crews demolished over a hundred buildings and cut down thousands of trees before burning all the debris. Numerous covered dirt roads, bridges, farming implements, bicycles, a schoolhouse and foundations of those farmhouses and summer cottages remain. The State General Assembly authorized Connecticut Light & Power to develop the hydroelectric potential of the Housatonic River. To this end, the valley was flooded over a period of 7 months. I found this bit of Connecticut history in the book "Connecticut Icons", by Connecticut Magazine editor Charles Monagan. I'd like to find pictures of what was here before.
I'd love to send you some of my research. It includes some photos of Leach Hollow, a map of New Fairfield, a topo map, and an annotated map of where some old roads are in leach hollow.
Still hard to believe this was once a valley with farms, a schoolhouse, etc. There are still many artifacts down there. Thanks.
This dive is amazing! We spent summers in a house right across from Lynn Deming Park, just north of the dive. My grandfather would let me drive his boat on the lake , but I had to remain within eyesight. Therefore, I would turn around before the Narrows right above Jerusalem, as it turns out!
17:14 lol
Are there any dangerous fish here or sharks ?
ItsYaBoiMikey no it’s a lake
Rinaldi the lake was man made and flooded it was a big field before it got flooded and the only way it could have sharks in there if some one put in there and why would you so the biggest thing in there is probably the flooded wrecked houses
Is the water ever clear?
Early spring before the algae really starts up the vis is a little better. 5 to 10 feet maybe. 20'depth seems to be the best for visibility and light. Below 30' vis seems to quickly go down to a foot and darkness. I think the the algae starts to settle to the bottom as the summer progresses. Not the Bahamas...
Anthony Ricci no cause there is no chlorine in the water so it’s like asking if the ocean is clear
I used to fly RC Helicopters.
You're a pilot too! Nice landing. Where is this, Oxford?
Peter Ferreira , KBAF, Massachusetts, maintenance flight.
Have you gone to the cemetery yet?
Peter Ferreira not yet. The only one I know of is just NE of Green Island in Sherman. The graves were relocated next to the Library. We did a dive in the area but the visibility went down to a foot below 33 feet or so. We did find some pristine stone walls and foundations in the area. That area was known as Leach Hollow. Hope to try again early spring before the algae develops.
Yeah let me know check out my RUclips channel I do a lot of local diving in Connecticut New England Rhode Island etc.

"Jerusalem" and a man-made lake?
Hi would you mind finding my GoPro in candle wood lake and return it please much appreciated
Where and how deep? Visibility can be as low a foot so if you can't pin point it it will be like finding a needle in a hay stack.
Heu sup liam!
