That is the gear lever. The bike has 2 primary chains and the lever operates clutches to engage either one or the other clutches. Unfortunately it slips a bit so I have to hold it in gear. Normally I use an inner tube rubber band around the gear lever and ignition advance lever behind it yo hold it in gear.

@lancelottavola9685 you need to give it a pumpfull every 10 miles but I generally give it half a pump every 5 miles.

I wonder if fishing reel drag washers would hold the gear lever in position.
